Picture Profiles for 422 on the 5D3

I have been unable to try it with an external recorder yet. Would you say there's a big jump in resolution/ overall quality?

would love to see some sample footage if you have any.

Cheers !!

On static stuff, for most things, I basically see absolutely zero jump in resolution compared to IPB internal.

If the entire frame is moving all over and especially when focus is nearly but not quite in focus on some detailed area of a frame and the whole frame is moving and focus changing the external has wayyyy less compression artifacts than IPB (however, that might not be the case compared to all-i, didn't test that yet). Frame by frame it's a huge difference for some frames. That said, in real time, at least on a 24" screen (even sitting really close), the differences all sort blur much more together to the eye and you have to really keep your eyes peeled like an eagle.

Sometimes if you have something like white text surrounded by solid block of color, the white text can be a touch crisper and sharper with the external recording (but there is, oddly, that MORE noticeable transition band on the left hand vertical sides of it though which is kinda....). Not sure if that is a Ninja thing, prores thing, PP CS6 thing, 5D3 thing or something I'm doing wrong.

I could swear that ALL output, internal or external, with 1.2.1 is a bit crisper and more detailed than before though, same shadow detail but things have a touch more contrast/detail/pop in general and areas of low contrast detail don't turn quite as waxy as before it seems. Still not like C300 or anything though or like some of those 'raw' DNG frames people are posting.

Portraits of Poverty...

There is the opposite extreme also...I'm sure that an "after hours" shoot of some rich and famous would reveal that they are slobs with bad, nasty habits. Look at some models before the makeup and lighting (or actors who spent too much time under an Arri Sun), some of them are down right hideous. Most of the "media" nowadays tailors the menu of what viewers see.

That's why some photographs are shocking - I have a friend who is from urban Florida and came for a meeting in the midwest. He got scared when he looked out his hotel room at 3am and saw lights moving around in the corn field behind the building. He thought it was some children-of-the-corn sh*t going on and didn't realize that it was probably kids playing (or a new meth lab going up).

Full length portraits at indoor event - best lighting solution?

I would use a large butterfly key light as its generally pretty versatile with all sorts of different face shapes.

Add a hard kicker light with a wider spread to cover the shoulders and hair.

The background should be distanced to determine grey or black or even white if you add flash to it.

Canon 5D Mark iii HDMI Clean Output?

But the C-Line is a total different quality. I have the 5D III and like it a lot and use it on my Tiffen Merlin 2 from time to time. But I got my 1D C this week and I can only say the quality of the movies is something I haven´t got before. I filmed parrots with 600mm II lens and 2x III in 4K and Super 35.
That gives me 1200mm *1,3 crop = 1560mm and I can crop the picture down to 1080P and get about 3120mm focal lenght or with the Super35 mode 1800mm because of 1,5 crop . It´s just perfect. Doesn´t really fit on my Merlin anymore but I don´t regred spending the extra Money. And I have to say the clean output is not really needed, the quality will only get better with RAW. But it´s nice to be able to connect a Ninja and get the Zebra and Focus peaking. and a backup of your recorded image in a good quality.

New 5D3 firmware but now no Focus point grouping option.

Just did the upgrade to firmware 1.2.1.
I followed exactly the instructions from the PDF. Finished the upgrade by taking out the batteries - wait one minute - and inserted them again, powered the camera.

And, focus point selection was reset to single point AF. It even resetted my C1 settings to single point AF - wow! Not good. I had to re-register the C1 with correct focus point selection.

I just don't understand that Canon QA-department did not find such a simple bug. Because I think it is a bug. It should not change the stored Cx settings. On the other hand, maybe they don't have any choice.

New Zeiss 55mm Lens

for the price and MF only i'm not super concerned with it
I would like to try one out on my 5Dmk2 with brightscreen though to see how it is hitting focus wide open
without the brightscreen on a lens like this i think it could get frustrating wide open

I'm getting my EC-S in the mail in a few days ;D I'll FINALLY get a definite answers as to how the metering will work.

*UPDATE* The EC-S meters just as normal without telling the camera it's another focusing screen than the original (which isn't supported anyway). At least with the 24, 35, 50 and 24-70. Will have a go with the 70-200 tomorrow. VERY nice!

So much for people who were anticipating a fall in prices of Canon products due to JPY devaluation.

Weaker Yen may yet lead to reduction in the average price of Canon products. Most likely this will not be everyday shelf price (MAP price) but average price reflecting discounts and promotional $ available to retailers.

That was really the point I was trying to make. It is because Canon has revised its profit guidance upwards (due to a weaker JPY) means that it is increasingly unlikely that the USD prices will be reduced.

With the Firmware update -- can I record to an external hard drive?

Check out the canon wireless transmitter for the 5d3. It allows you to connect USB drives for file transfer. Not sure you can record to one directly though. However with the wireless enabled you should be able to write wirelessly to a laptop with the USB drive attached.. Or use an eye-fi card.

But in other words no. The new firmware cannot write to an external USB drive.

Canon 5D Mark III Rear LCD Screen Cover Scratched - Is it replaceable?

I called out of curiosity I called again and a 2nd person confirmed that the LCD protector is integrated and unlike the Mark II the protector cannot be replaced without a new unit. However she did say a new LCD was something like $106 if I recall, i was surprised at how cheap it was. Of course installing it may double that still $200 + change is not bad considering I was expecting a lot more.

I went ahead and got a screen protector, if's funny I had my old 40D for years and never scratched it and so I thought I never needed a protector because the Mark III has a scratch resistant piece of glass. I have my 5D Mark III for less than a year and have already scratched the rear and there's also a scuff on the top LCD (which can be replaced and costs like $11 for the part according to Canon, not sure how much labor would be). I agree the prices are very reasonable, I may wait until to see if something else occurs and then may just add it in if I'm already performing other repairs.

100D/SL1

.
At $650, I think it would be a nice upgrade from a T1i. You might want to handle it first to make sure it doesn't feel too small in your hands. In pictures, it looks really small. I think some big-handers might not find it suitable.

Is there a chance that this could be a good upgrade from a T1i? All pics I've seen so far look pretty good. My T1i results are really good with my Sigma 17-50 and Canon 100 2.0 and 200 2.8II and I won't be going with a ff anytime soon. The 1.6x factor serves me well for sports, etc., I don't like articulating screens and probably don't need the features of a 7D.

Viking Burial Fun (eral) topic!

I've fixed over 2 dozen bodies, and at least a dozen lenses. I'd be taking it apart and repairing it. Currently I'm attempting to reassemble a Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8D lens (push-pull) that I fixed. Trying to reassemble in the same way I disassembled it has not worked and there are no complete repair manuals available (only exploded diagrams and parts lists). Not sure if this will be a successful repair or not.

At work, I often shoot video of myself taking something apart.... lets me know what I did and in what order... I talk to the camera as I go. This strategy fails when the thing you are taking apart is your camera :)

To be fair, you weren't really discussing the differences between manual and eTTL; it was more like highlighting the shortcomings of eTTL. In the first paragraph you completely dismissed eTTL as being worthless.

yeah and only a troll or someone unable to use ETTL would do that. :)

have a look at joe mcnallys work.
he uses TTL on nikon.. and it´s not that much (if any) better then canons.

Did i say it was worthless? I said unreliable for consistency in power output for multiple shots when the flash is off camera, especially as you change composition. I didn't say it doesn't work.

I will rephrase it though - ETTL for dynamic situations and where subject to light distance is constanly changing and manual for a fixed position.

You guys really need to chill and not pounce on the first thing you happen to disagree upon.

Not everyone is a Joe Mcnally. We all make mistakes.

You didnt rephrase it, you tried to change your point, and its still wrong. If you practice with ETTL then you will have to work less in dynamic situations than using manual in controlled situations.

Why does Canon release 17 new powershot cameras per YEAR?

P&S is a vastly different item than dslrs as others noted and it abides to different rules. When someone goes in a shop for a 2k+ camera he usually knows damn well what he wants to buy, on the other hand, someone looking for a P&S usually doesnt have a clue and will buy whatever the salesperson convinces him to or whatever tickles his fancy. And its in this aspect that having dozens of new models every year makes sense. Think about toothpastes in the supermarket. Every brand has dozens with slight different characteristics (and usually the same paste inside). The reason for this?
Shelf space.
Think about it. Having the best toothpaste in the world is not enough to guarantee sales when its just 1 item in a shelf of 50. Whereas if you could have 15+...

And a ham sandwich with every new camera, dammit!!!

Only if it has a nice slice of real cheese and a generous slice of a juicy red tomato as well. And let's just hope they do not forget a thin spread of Salad Cream. Heinz of course. Otherwise all deals are off and I may just switch to, erm, Polaroid. :D 8)
No tomato on the sandwich, both the cheese and bread will get soggy. Get yourself together here :D

Says the man living in the city with the best French bread in South East Asia. ;) Making an ham and cheese sandwich without a nice slice of juicy tomato is just wrong. It would be like spreading some mayonnaise on it instead of using Heinz's Salad Cream, and since when did cheese get soggy?! ;D :o
I apologize, I stand corrected ;)

:D The amazing French bread you have in PP, is one of the main benefits of living there I think. I know when I travel there I eat enormous amounts of the stuff!! Good cheeses, pates and wines are also reasonably priced.
Yes, one of the few good things the French left behind is parts of their food and wine culture. There's plenty of French people around here and they still have a huge embassy here so I guess it's natural. Now I got hungry :P
