New 1DX Mark II Owner - Is This Dirty Sensor Normal?

All the 1DX series camera have this problem. I used to send both my 1DX and 1DX Mark II in multiple times a year for cleaning. If you're a general shooter who uses the camera for landscape and/or macro work with the lens aperture stopped down, you will absolutely notice the oil splatter from these cameras.

The oil splatter used to infuriate me. I got rid of my last 1D camera when the R5 came out and haven't looked back.

R6 beginners video

I've started using my R6 to take video of my daughters dancing/singing on stage (they have many performances, so after I get all the stills I want, I sometimes I do video to document the show for family viewing). I don't want to get too deep into video, but I do want to grab any low hanging fruit available to me to get better than full-auto video. Like in stills, I guess some people must actually shoot straight to JPEG but pick settings to get it done pretty well in camera by tweaking modes like Portrait or Landscape. For video, I'm sure most of you shoot CLog...I want to avoid that if possible and be like a JPEG stills shooter who uses the camera presents...but for video. The challenge is mostly due to stage lighting.

For stills, I spot meter and underexpose by about 1 stop to avoid blowing out the skin tones. Processing the raw files is then pretty easy after I get the first image done the settings carry over very well to everything else. Ballpark is to increase exposure 1 stop, pull down highlights to -50, boost shadows to +50 and go from there. I tried a similar approach using Lightroom to edit video (because it's all I had at the time) but found the same settings didn't work that well and I couldn't push and pull things very far before they look totally distorted.

I did just download the free version of Resolve, so I won't be limited to editing video in Lightroom...that might help with the post processing...I hope. Mostly I want to avoid color grading which seems necessary of you shoot Clog. But I'm a total beginner and don't know what I don't know.

Any help is appreciated.

[TEST] Patona LP-E6NH vs Canon LP-E6NH and multi battery charger

Batteries are like half price cheper. Patona Protect recorded 1:42h of 4K material, Patona Platinum USB-C recorded 1:36h of 4K and Canon LP-E6NH recorded 1:52h of 4K.

Both Patona's are chargable with orignal charger but Patona Twin Charger is double faster than Canon ones. It charged two bateries at the same time as original charged one.

More details in the video, but full recommendation!

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II will be announced on November 2, 2022

It was obviously not the marketing department's best moment (yes, they emphasised 8k) - but some people's expectations were clearly unrealistic. And the recording times for different configurations were hardly buried in a footnote. I recall many of the people complaining were the same ones who reacted incredulously to the initial teasers that it would be the first body of it's type to capture 8K ('it's impossible - it'll melt down immediately!').

But it was a marketing disaster in that all everyone was talking about for weeks/months was interminable online tests on how long it took for the thing to overheat, and then cool back down. Until the miraculous firmware update that (?) fixed the issue by presumably adjusting the heat tolerances and postponing the overheating warnings. And I know some people such as yourself had (and still have) lock-up issues with the R5.
I agree. I think Canon learned some lessons and I do love the R5 (maybe even more than the R3) It has had some issues, but as an all around camera it’s the best Canon I’ve owned and I’ve owned a lot, including the 1D x II and III.

How frequently does your R5 freeze/lock up?

I’ve had this issue with my R6 since I bought it. The first time I sent it to Canon they said there was nothing wrong. The second time I sent it they replaced the logic board. It has now done it again after only a few shots with the new logic board. It’s heading back again tomorrow. I hope they give me a new body. I also had focusing issues until they replaced the board.

The Canon EOS R8 will be announced at CP+ in February

The fact that Canon is abandoning customers with EF-format cameras in favor of RF-format and ceasing to offer new EF lenses and bodies makes me regret trusting them and buying an EOS 5D Mark III.

I don't like the RF series LCD viewfinders which are bad for the eyes. I will not change either my equipment which cost me a fortune to adopt the range without RF mirror. I will abandon Canon, as they sadly abandoned me. And for this reason I will certainly never buy the Canon brand, which from my point of view abused the trust I had in them ;-(
I hear you-- I have a 5DS and the body handling and feel is fantastic. Many of the EF lenses that I own were good for my 6D but looked terrible on the 5DS. You should maybe sit tight and grab cheap EF lenses used. There are a lot of good copies that will become available. I went to a R5 and have kept my EF 2.8 24-70 and 100-400 in use. Just have added the RF 14-35 and 70-200 but went F4 for price (hobby not a profession) I have used Canon since the early 80s and could make a mini museum, but cannot recommend to friends asking advise until the mount is opened to 3rd parties. Insanely love my R5 by the way.

Canon Launches the PowerShot Zoom in Black

Hi, since Canon "upgraded" the Powershot Zoom after 1 year, I was wondering if there will be another upgrade any time soon? I also notice most shops are out of stock for the Powershot Zoom in the Netherlands. Maybe Canon has stopped production and waiting for the new version to be revealed?
It is still for sale at Canon Japan and Canon USA.
It is in its own "Minocular" category.
I am not sure if that means there will be more to come in that category.

BCN Lens Ranking: Canon #2 (Barely)

I see Photo Rumors has posted the latest mirrorless interchangeable lens BCN rankings for 2022. Sony #1 with 16.4%, followed by Canon with 15.9%, Sigma and Tamron #3 and #4 with just two-tenths of a percent separating them. Nikon at 13%.

Thoughts: [...]
  • It would be interesting to know what fraction represents M lenses vs. R lenses.[...]
I would like to know the complete breakdown: EF, EF-S, RF, RF-S and EF-M. I wouldn't be surprised to see that EF/EF-S sales (in units) are still bigger than RF/RF-S. Not sure where I'd but EF-M sales, the 2-lens kits were very popular in the past, so it could be 40% EF-M, 30% EF(-S), 20% RF(-S), in units. RF lenses are of course a lot more expensive, so that guestimated 20% in units sold would be a lot more when looking at the amount of Yen they brought in.

I'm also curious to see the breakdown per month, did Canon sales dip after all the lensfluencers went "OMG NO RF AT ALL!!!"? The amount of comments saying they ritually burned all their Canon gear and switched to Fuji/Sony/whatever over the lack of RF lenses in my internet bubble is huuuuuuuge. But those comments look very much like the DR and overheating comments in the past, so I find it hard to not see them as paid Sony shills. I guess I found the reason why cynical photonerds are bad at predicting global market directions :)

Canon officially announces the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM and Canon Speedlite EL-5

135L is pretty much DOA here in Australia since it’s $3899 AUD and the 135GM is only $2300 AUD. Not to mention you got the option of the Samyang 135mm f/1.8 AF for around $1400 AUD.
The cost isn't what you pay, but what you pay minus what you eventually sell for. I usually buy my Canon gear mint used and sell it near-mint used. The actual cost of the Samyang and the Canon might be very close.

Canon R6 II avec Irix 15 mm

I have had the same problem with the 150 mm and my R10. Irix told me that they could not solve the problem because of the Canon ban of third party lenses.
That’s Swiss for “We don’t support user upgradable firmware on our lenses and don’t want to have them sent in for us to
do it, let’s hope no one calls us on this bullshit excuse”

A second camera will be announced with the EOS R50 in Q1 2023

And a small 15f/2 lens. The Sigma 16 f/1.4 is a bit too large and it isn't a Canon lens.

Update: I wonder about the marketing politics surrounding Canon's transition to mirrorless. When the M-system was first proposed, I would have expected a lively discussion within Canon about the best way to make the transition, resulting in a coherent long range marketing plan. That doesn't seem to have happened.

Oh, I think it happened.

Then Fuji said, "You're going to completely phase out APS-C from serious cameras? Here, hold my beer!"

Canon Launches the Kokomo Solution

One of the most unusual recent releases was that 5.2mm L dual fisheye VR lens that only works on the R5. This makes me wonder if there is some Connect the Dots type of plan down the road somewhere.
It also works with the R5 C and V-Raptor.
I assume that Canon has some more 8K cinema cameras in the works and I have no doubt that it will also work with the R1.

R7 Focus and High Noise

Problem is you are using EF moutn lenses even with the EF-EOS-R adaptor and 3rd party lenses like the sigma (which is a really good brand of lens) just does not want to be compatible. Best to get RF mount lenses like I have the 24-105 F4 the RF 70-200 F2.8 the RF 85mm F1.2 and the F2.0 and the RF 100-500lense for my R7
This is a bad take. I've used several Sigma lenses and Canon EF lenses with the Canon EF-RF adapter on the EOS R, RP, and R6 and had no problems with compatibility. In fact, some of these adapted lenses seem to focus better on the R cameras than they did on the EF-mount cameras.
