Couldn't agree more... heck my 7d to my old 5d2, keeper rates in moderate to dim rooms were 60-70 with the 7D with more usable but not crisp... the 5d2 25-30 and that's being very generous. IQ kept you coming back but AF kept pushing you away.

because if that's so, and you don't need AF, my suggestion would be the samyang 85mm f/1.4

Wont be risking my 5DIII. I'll be using a pinhole projection onto a sheet of foam board.

If you really insist on a direct shot, check oriontelescopes.com. They have solar filters in varying sizes, both glass type and mylar type film. They also have small diameter filters for smaller telescopes which might fit some telephoto lenses (nylon set screws to hold it in place for safety). They say the filters will hold tight up to 1/4" less in diameter than the size shown....and if not there is always duct tape. Canon seems to use that a lot lately so why not here.

Thank You All for such wonderful and helpful insights. Every bit of advice made sense.
Before this post, I've been leaning towards getting the 70-200 f/2.8 II as my next lens.
Many of your responses made this more of an affirmation. So, I'll be saving for that come the holiday season.

After this, I'll see where my needs are at that time...my feeling is, it'll be either the 85 f/1.2 II, or 135 f/2...then the 16-35 f/2.8

That's my foreseeable future. We'll see where my photography skills/needs are by then. I'm sure I'll be back for more advice before then

Not fair since reducing the size improves visible noise. In a real word scenario, it would come down to framing. So they should both be tested at their native resolutions with a shot that is framed similarly for both sensors.. i.e. for the D800 move away from the subject and for the 5d3 move into the subject, then show us a 100% crop from both cropped to the small of the 2 sensors. This gives us the same framing per pixel group.

This way you get pixel by pixel comparison of the same shot...

XO skins are sold to protect the protective glass cover over the rear LCD diaplay, not over a lens. Its ironic that some people buy something to protect a protector, which is easily replaced.

Its kinda like buying insurance on insurance.

The fact is at 1600, 3200 it is very useable you could even get away with 6400. The ISO performance has been significantly improved over the 5D MKII if you ask me.

I dont think the raws are that bad for 12800 but just because it is there doesn't mean you should used it readily... the subject matter doesn't really help either. Yes the D800 has more detail but we already know that... so whats new here?

I just received my 5diii last night from a small vendor. It is the last one in stock from the first wave of shipping before Canon's holding due to light leak issue. I thought it's 6th digit serial number must have been "1" or "2" and it was OK because I couldn't wait and never took pics in extreme dark situation. I placed order with assuming of #"1".
But finally it's "3". What can we tell here? #"3" doesnt mean new stock and #"1" or #"2" dont mean old stock either.
So before returning, you should re-think if you would use it in extreme dark situation. If you would, then whether the 5diii is from the stock shipped before or after Canon's holding.

I just wrote in another about it since I had it twice on my 100 non-L macro, err01 says your lens doesn't do what the body wants it to, so either the contacts aren't clean or the lens is broken, most likely due to dust/corrosion which makes the aperture fail.

Basically expect to wave your lens good-bye since the non-cps professional repair will be as expensive as getting a new one with warranty...but you can still use it in reverse position as a macro

I do find the articulating screen worth the extra money. Until I can get a monitor but I would rather buy some lenses and a rig first.

As far as I know there is no Loyalty Program in EU and there is also no Refurb Store. So 680€ is what I would end up paying.

I will definitely get a 50/1.8 or perhaps even the 50/1.4 since I heard very good things about it when it comes to video.

But I do find that even though the kit zoom isn't a great lens it is worth the extra 77$.

Okay, never mind I just found it. It seems the menu changes when you go from video mode to still mode. I was not aware of that so its a good learning lesson. Hope this helps someone else out there.

One nice new thing is that Custom C1-C3 now can be set to constantly update to your current settings instead of reverting each time the camera times out. Nice to not have to hassle with re-registering non-stop. Often conditions change as you shoot and you say quickly flip to C1 for some video and it may have timed out to something no good at all for the current condition and then you flip to C2 for stills action and it's timed out to wrong thing and then to C3 for alternate type stills and it's wrong. Now you can tell it to lock it in as you change and not need to worry about that at all. Nice.

No head scratching needed. If you read and comprehend their testing procedures and scores, it makes perfect sense. About lens scores: DxOMark Score considers the overall performance of a lens plus its performance when used with a specific camera body.

yes...I understand. But, to post a "score" for the old nikon 70-200 paired with the a 5dx at 27, and the current canon 70-200 is ii with a 5d2 scores an 18, would imply that the nikon lens (the old model) is roughly 50% better than the new canon. this is where I take issue...the scoring for lenses and cameras isn't accurate, and implies a significant advantage to nikon which is just not the case....simple.

If Canon thinks that to come out a new body by increasing the mega pix to compete with Nikon D800 ... please think again .... it is really not about mega pixels anymore .... it is more about sensor quality and technology that the market is after now! Adding more pixels into the same 2005 silicon die, year in and year out, simply doesn't work anymore this time .... it is more about colour depth (16-bits), dynamic range (14 stops) and low light capability that give Medium Format a real run for its money that the market is after this time!!!!

A few more MP wouldn't hurt but some crazy 40-45MP with locked 3fps and same old DR would be worse compared to the D800 than the 5D3 IMO, at least the 5D3 gives you 6fps in FF and non-line skipped video.

I have a friend/associate who swears by the GH2's fast continuous autofocus. Doesn't hurt that the GH2 produces pretty good quality images for its price range. Personally, I think the continuous autofocus is more useful for ENG people who often need to track the action live. That's very hard to do in manual mode, even with follow focus, because you can't predict what is going to happen. That said, you could always close down to f/9.0 and get most everything sharp.

For filmmakers, the autofocus is not a big deal. It's not a "deal" at all. Everybody wants control of what's in focus, what's not. There's a reason why movie cameras and lenses don't have autofocus.

Canon USA still lists the 'estimated retail price' as $1399. But street price is determined by supply and demand. Supply is short. The impending discontinuation of the MkI means that soon, the $2300 MkII will be the only 24-70/2.8 available new from Canon. That means demand is high. Low supply + high demand = rising prices. Simple, and as many have pointed out, this is exactly what happened with the 70-200/2.8 IS.

The increases trickle down to the used market, too - only recently, two years after the 70-200 II release and after street price has fallen a bit, are used copies of the MkI coming back down into the range where they were before the MkII was released.

The big benefit of the 5D MkII if that it is a full frame sensor, and does very well in low light and has awsome background blur-ability. However the AF on the 5d MkII is not the best. BUT in video you are doing mostly manual or contrast AF so that does not matter. The 60D you can get refurbished with a lens for $980 and either sell the lens for 300 on e-bay or use it. I have a 60D with magic latern on it and it didnt hurt it one bit, and there are SOOO many options available for video I dont even know what half of them are lol. The 7d is the same sensor as the 60D and i dont see much difference for video. And the 60D screen pivots, i dunno if that is useful for video, considering I only like it to keep my LCD scratch free lol. Just my honest opinion. And you might look into the nikon lenses you have, i dont think they will work on a full-frame nikon. Just join the dark side already ;-)

exactly -- if we see a "mp war" type sensor emerge in the 650 then we will all start hoping that 7D2 will be different. I wonder, for example, if additional investments in the sensor itself -- separating the 7D2 from the rest of the 1.6x pack, would ever happen.
