5D Mark III Main Dial problem

I do not see any pink goop in the disassembly images, but there is a wire in that area with pink or salmon colored insulation.
Send the camera in for service, its possible the wire has the insulation pinched and pulled off.

Great how this article ends with an advert of Knob Creek Bourbon.
After dismantling the 5D MK III, you can sure need a drink to think over how to put it back together again ;D

Black specks on 5D Mark III

khv3412 said:
Look through the viewfinder, I see 4 black specks. Had Canon store to clean the sensor but the specks still there. They said sensor is clean & nothing effect the images. Do I need to send it to Canon Service for cleaning? My camera still underwarranty. It is free for first cleaning. Any one have suggestion? thanks.

The VF is dirty, it doesn't affect the images however it bothers the heck out of me, so I would send it back to Canon for a cleaning since it's still under warranty, especially if you have a back-up camera. You have to be very careful with these new electronic viewfinders (7D, 5DIII, 1DX), since they scratch very easily!

Canon EOS-1D X Review

I'm begrudgingly coming round to the fact that this is the camera I have to upgrade to.

I'm currently shooting off two ancient 1D mk2's, which have done me proud, but I'm getting left behind in the tech race. They're good for the majority of stuff I shoot, but lacking in other areas, and I'm having to hire cameras to cope with the shoots where I need more than the mk2's can handle.

I was going to upgrade to the Mark 4, and maybe get a Ds Mk3 as backup, but having seen some of the high quality ISO shots (in particular Andy Rouse's owl shots), I think I'm going to can the idea of the Mk4.. My work is pretty varied, and the idea of being able to shoot at that high an ISO in certain situations is very tempting.

Still maybe get a Ds3 as backup (although I'll reserve judgement after using the 5dMk3 I'm hiring for a shoot this week).

The X looks like a phenomenal piece of kit, and considering I was going to spend £2, 800 on a Mk4, I think I'm going to have to justify the extra £1, 200.

Now then... Anyone want to buy a couple of Mamiya RB-67's with lenses etc etc etc? :)

5D III with 2X extender on a 2.8 70 - 200 Lens

Thanks for the quick response. I am shooting pics of my daughter's soccer tournament game today and at the first game i did notice a lag in the focusing. I did not know about the reduction in the AF. I am going to her second game in a few moments and I think I will leave the extender in the hotel room. I kind of regret bringing my FF on this trip. I think next time I will use my crop frame camera.

Tracking Birds?

I've been shooting a lot of birds lately and one problem I've been having is keeping them in focus while flying. I have tried al servo, regular etc, and once in a while I'll hit in spot on, but usually in a burst out of 15 photos 3 will focus on the bird lol. Is there a technique or tip anyone might have for all those fast birds out there :)?

using mono pod or ball head w/ 500mm sometimes with 1.4 or 2x extender

Are you using center focus point? If you are using any type of zone focus then your camera might be grabbing on to whatever is within other focus points, especially if the birds are smaller or farther away.

Using such a long lens can take a lot of practice. When I went from 300mm to 600mm I was like a monkey with a match problem at first. Not saying you have not spent lots of time behind the lens, but for me I just had to practice practice practice.... and still getting better at it.

Also a small tip on getting BIF into your viewfinder is to orient the knob on your lens hood so it is directly centered on top of the end of the lens barrel. This way you can look over your hotshoe over the knob and line it up with a bird. Then just tilt the lens up just a tad while looking into the view finder and you will find it much quicker. The sooner you find it, the easier it will be to track.

Just the single center focus point. And the knob is actually a fantastic tip!!! Thank you! I will just keep practicing

5d Mk III dilemma

Well done and congratulations on your purchase. You'll have years of fun and creative sessions with it.
And BTW, nice work with those shots around your home. I want to live where you live!

Thanks very much. It was a very good decision indeed. I'll need to try the downtown evening shots again, this time using a tripod so I can use smaller apertures. Meanwhile, I've taken a few shots with my 70-200mm f/2.8 MkII and the 100-400mm and all looks well. Victoria is a very nice city even though full of old folks like me.
Cheers,

Delivery to the CPS merchants in Germany starts definetely next week. This is CR3 and reported a few times in the last two days by Canon Germany (CPS) and Canon Europe (CPS).

But I don´t think that Canon is able to fulfill all preorders. CPS members (platinum) are the first who get the lens.

I read a lot of IS. => You don´t need an IS. I am happy with my prototype of the lens without IS. If you want the best image quality and you shoot architecture, landscapes or available light use a good tripod with a gearhead like the Manfrotto 405. If you want to make videos get a tripod with a good video head. For sports, weddings and travelling you don´t need an IS.

-1........Without tripod, "IS" can be usefull for low light shot - shutter speed 1/40 or slower.
Yup ... mere mortals like me need IS, coz I hate climbing sand dunes in the desert with a tripod in my hand ... the same applies during my family vacations ... most of my vacations are in a tour bus, sightseeing new places and it is convenient to have IS ... that is the reason why I like 24-105 L IS ... but if 24-70 f/2.8 had IS I can do so much more with the DOF.
I know it is wishful thinking but it would be AWESOME if Canon made 24-105 f/2.8 L IS. ;D

I take 2 ;D
Yeah for sure this lens is second on my lens dream list after a 35-85 f2L IS
Hmmm ... 35-85 f2 L IS? if that comes true, Canon will price it so much that I'd have to sell my family jewels ;D

It's the 5D Mark II selling for $1979 at Adorama and Amazon. Why wait for an announcement at Photokina? It may not even be announced and if it were, it won't be available for another 12-18 months. My 3 day old $1583 refurb has made me happy this week.

Where did you get a refurb mark II for $1583? ???
I bought my refurb thru the Canon CLP program - Google it. It cost $1407 plus state sales tax, free shipping. The price has apparently gone up since then.

Yes, mine is $1580 plus state tax. The final price is $1646.

Once in a Blue Moon with Canon EOS 5D MK III

Earlier this evening I read the following article in a newspaper ... so I pulled out my 5D MK III with a Sigma 150-500 OS lens ran to the backyard, (mounted it on my Manfotto 468MGRC2 Ball Head on Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Tripod legs) to take this photo ... nothing great about the image but I thought the article was interesting as I did not know anything about Blue Moon, other than hear the old saying "Once in a Blue Moon" used by people quite often. Except sharpening and resizing for emailing, no post processing is done to the image.
Once%2520in%2520a%2520Blue%2520Moon.jpg

Friday will not be just another full moon night. On August 31 2012, it will literally be a once in a blue moon night, christened so because it will be the second full moon this month.

One gets an opportunity to see a 'blue moon' once in three years. The first full moon of the month was on August 2 and the second one is on August 31. The day holds a historical significance as the last blue moon shone on the earth in December 2009, while the next one is due in July 2015.

Experts believe that the term blue moon is likely to have originated from a rare historic event. The popular saying 'once in a blue moon' and its connection with two full moons in a month could have first happened in 1883 when Mount Krakatoa, a volcano in Indonesia erupted with a tremendous explosion and spewed out enormous amount of dust. This engulfed the earth's upper atmosphere and the moon appeared to acquire a bluish hue and remained so for nearly two years.

However, the earliest recorded English usage of the term 'blue moon' was in a 1524 pamphlet violently attacking the English clergy titled 'Rede Me and Be Not Wrothe' (Read me and be not angry; or possibly Counsel Me and Be Not Angry): "If they say the moon is belewe/We must believe that it is true" (If they say the moon is blue, we must believe that it is true).

There is another available interpretation that uses the Middle English meaning of belewe, which (besides 'blue' the colour) can mean 'betray'.

However, Mount Krakatoa isn't the only example. Other less potent volcanoes have also turned the moon blue. People saw blue moons in 1983 after the eruption of the El Chichon volcano in Mexico and there are also reports of blue moons caused by Mount St Helens in 1980 and Mount Pinatubo in 1991.

Forest fire in Sweden and Canada in 1950 and 1951 has also caused the moon to appear blue. In all these cases, it was refraction of light that had led to the blue tinge. Astronomy specialists pointed out there have been instances of two full moons in two calendar months every 19 years.

It is in 2018 next that one can witness two blue moons in a year.

There is nothing out of the ordinary on a blue moon night. It has no special metaphysical or any other significance apart from the fact that it probably explains the term of a rare phenomenon being called once in a blue moon' occurrence.
