until then....shooting 5D III + 16-35 II is not so bad at all.

A 14-24 would be great, but the 16-35 II will have to suffice for a while.

;D ;D ;D....I'll bring 5D III + 16-35 II with me next coming trip to Hong Kong & China. Helllllloooooo chinese food :P

Mmmmm, chinese food. 8)

Wow now thats some serious lens action - 24k for a lens is a mind blowing amount when you're used to DSLR pricing :)

I do wonder, are they really _that_ much better?

$24k is average for a cinema lens, heck the zooms they released earlier this year are both around $43k. A full set of Arri cinema primes is between $100,000-$180,000 depending on which set you get. These clearly aren't for consumers.

Do u think they fall into cinema lenses, with their awful focal lengths???? and being more expensive is always a justification for pro-lenses. OK we got.

Time from Announcement to Release

While I'm usually all for renting, I'd suggest you do the math.

14 day rental of the 5DIII will run you about $400 (with damage waiver and you definitely don't want to rent without the waiver).

Ask yourself which is the better deal: Rent the 5D or pick up a refurbished 7D ($1,360) or 60 D ($800) and sell it later when a new model comes out. If you think you can sell the 7D or the 60D for more than the price less rental, you could be money ahead buying. Plus you'll both have cameras until the next model comes out.

You're math makes sense. Might not want to spend that much for a rental. Maybe I will just get a 7D for the time being and just sell it for the next release. But then there is the 5d mark ii for a tad bit more. Haha.

Most importantly, for many that want larger MP, their end usage is not a computer screen; it's a much larger, higher res print version.

high MP count with a crop mode to save space (ala D800) or medium count on a smaller sensor (ala 7D) can be good when you need to crop heavily such as for distant wildlife too
I had a D800, cropping does not save space, it cuts away part of the image. SRAW that Canon has saves space, but Nikon has nothing similar.
I would not want to pay $$$ for a FF camera and then convert it to a crop.

1D Mark IV Prices

The typical pattern is for prices of a body to drop when a new model is announced, and then rise later for a year or so. I did check Canon's refurb price, and it has not changed, its still 3995.Eventually, they all go down in price.
The 1D Mark IV has the ability to autofocus at f/8 and a 1.3 crop factor. Birders and those who are focal length limited value those features.

5D3 AF - just a few more positive notes on the one shot mode performance

Some more messing around with 5D3/5D2/7D and 24 1.4 II. The 5D3 definitely handles it the best. Sometimes the others do well with it, but not always. The 5D3 AF has some magic that makes it get a very, very high percentage in focus at all sorts of subject distances and lighting conditions, only under super poor (as in a single 40 watt bulb that is half obscured and shooting tricky targets not being directly lit by even that) lighting does it start to miss semi-often but even then it does the same as 5D2 and much better than the 7D (or 50D for that matter). For some tricky and not so tricky targets at a wide range of distances the other evening the 5D3 barely had a miss and by far more than half were utterly dead on at f/1.4 (the rest were in focus but just barely a smidge off of perfection, but totally fine) while the 5D2 and 7D were having plenty of clear misses and many fewer absolutely utterly dead on hits.

And paired with the high precision AF of the 70-300L, as per lens rentals, it really does tend to just nail the AF spot on with that one, absolute perfection.

Job well done.

Is digital still that new of a technology?

So it sounds like its a bit of marketing, price and technology. I will sit and wait another 12 years and see what cameras become and how outdated even a 5D3 would be considered. Was the EOS 1V rather expensive for its day? 12 years ago I was young and had a 2 megapixel Olympus that I thought was the best camera ever, I didn't know anything about film.

50L vs TS-E 45

bdunbar79 said:
If I take this question objectively, that is, the 50L or the TS-E 45 lens, then I'd get the 50L. It is a way sharper lens. However, I realize the TS-E 45 lens is not nearly the best TS lens. If money were no object I'd probably get the 24 II TS lens. But, answering your question specifically, the 50L.

Thanks for that. Problem is that 24mm is not really a focal length I'm particular interested in. 17 even less so. Not sure what to make of the 90mm TS. I could see it being an interesting portrait lens but that I would probably resort to my 135L in that range for the most part.

But I think I'm leaning more towards the 50L anyway at this point. Ultimately, I've come to realize that I'm really back to where I started 20-some years ago when learning how to use my dad's A1 with a 50 and a 135 and that was that.

1Dx availability in UK - Jessops

I've been looking for stock of these for a while. Just got off the phone with Castle Cameras? They think they're getting some tomorrow and have filled their back orders so fingers crossed I can get delivery on Friday!

I've checked them out and they seem very legit, the bloke on the phone was a bit of a laugh too.
