Is Canon prepping the announcement of two more lenses? It looks that way

Canon is going to continue and announce new RF glass during 2022, as they work to fill-out the lens lineup and catch up with the backlog of planned releases hampered by supply chain issues.
One of the rumored lenses to be announced has been on our roadmap for quite some time, and Canon should sell a ton of them.

The second rumored lens is new to us, and it looks like it will be an affordable full-frame ultra-wide angle lens.

File opening times (.CR2 vs .CR3)

So I finally got my R3 (425 days after preordering on April 14th 2021), changing from the 1Dx.

One thing that surprised me is the time DDP (4.16, the latest) takes to open and fully render the .CR3 files vs the .CR2 files from the 1Dx. Sure, there are 33% more pixels (18M -> 24M), but I found that the 1Dx .CR2 files opens in approx 12 seconds vs 35 seconds for the R3 CR3 files(!) - both tested/measured on the same laptop (i7-8565 CPU). Using my desktop (i7-9700K) doesn't bring down the opening time a lot (32sec).

Is this normal to see such a leap?

I picked up a C1 v22 license as well, but haven't had time learn the SW yet, so have to look into if that also is 3x slower in rendering. That'll have to be a task for July.

@neuroanatomist you did the same move from 1Dx to R3. As I recall, you don't use DPP? What are you seeing?

Patent: Very small large aperture zoom lens optical formulas

Canon has published a pretty interesting optical design patent for large aperture zoom lenses. The two designs in this patent are pretty interesting.
Canon’s goal in this patent
To provide a zoom lens having a short total length and a small size but having high optical performance, and an image pickup apparatus having the same.
As you can see, these lens designs use the “reverse” zoom design like the original EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. This probably helps in reducing the length and size of the lens. As you can see, the image height changes when zooming in and out.
Overall length is quite impressive at 105.42mm (about 4″) at the wide end. Keep in mind that those measurements are from the image sensor to the front element of the lens design.
Example 1

Focal length: 28.84mm – 67.90mm
F-number: 2.91
Half angle of view: 32.68° – 17.67°
Image height: 18.50mm – 21.64mm
Overall length: 138.40mm – 105.42mm
Back focus: 10.97mm – 21.12mm

Example 2

Focal length: 28.84mm – 60.00mm...

Lenses for Cruise

I am going on a disney Cruise with My R6 and was curious if anyone thinks it would be better to leave my 24-105L behind and add the 24-70 2.8L or go with something smaller like an R100 M8. I want good pictures but am torn to go all in or scale back. Anyone recently go down this exercise? Also torn on what speedlite to bring.

Is there a new model coming for the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens?

Hello all,

Great forum you have here!

Diving back into the world of macro photography I've bought a Canon EOS 850D to replace my old trusty 400D and am looking for a lens. Having used the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens I came back very impressed!! However, since it stems from 2009 I was wondering if there is a new version on the horizon to replace it or is it here to stay a few years longer? Searching rumors only lead me to RF versions.

Canon R7 pre-shooting - equal to pro-capture?

I have an R7 on pre order. Maybe I'll get it before 2023 if I'm lucky. But I was wondering; looking at the rolling shutter issues always more prevalent with non stacked sensors, do you think the pre-shooting function would actually be usable for a use-case such as small birds? From what I understand, the R7 will be using electronic shutter to store the 15 frames or 0.5 seconds to the buffer continuously. I've not been able to find out much about it on the preview vids I've seen so far - somewhere mentioned you needed canon software to get the images off the camera and couldn't be viewed out of camera? Will it be on par with the fantastic olympus pro-capture which has been around for years now?

Some advice needed please?

Hi All!
After being a Nikon shooter for the better part of 2 decades almost I've finally had it with Nikon. I'm mostly a sports photographer shooting my nieces and nephews sporting events as well as the various high school sports teams that I drive for(I drive school bus and take my camera along to kill the time while I'm waiting) as well as a semi-pro baseball team local to me. I also go to the Pittsburgh zoo and take pictures of the animals as well. I also shoot portraits as well as during our church services I take pictures of the praise band and other things. We have a concert like lighting set up for the church. So I need fast glass and camera bodies that have great low light capability. As much as I would love to go mirrorless and appreciate the technology behind it I've held the R5 and R6 with the grips on and I've held an R3 and they just don't feel right in my hands. I have some friends that have had at various times bodies in the 1 DX line of cameras and they felt great in my hand when I held them. As much as I would love to go out and spend the money on a couple of new or used 1 DX Mark III's that is just not in my budget right now. So my questions are these:

1. Are the 1 DX and 1 DX Mark II still viable today in 2022?
2. Will they offer me the ability to still do what I love to do(sports, zoo wildlife, concert-type pictures, and portraiture)?
3. Are there any cons to going with either of these bodies?
4. Other than a 70-200mm and 24-70mm f2.8 lenses are there any other lenses you would recommend? I was looking at a used 300 f2.8 for football(the 400mm even used is still too rich for my blood) and the 300 f4 is a lens that I love for baseball and zoo wildlife. I've only used Nikon's version though is Canon's comparable?

Any advice you could offer me would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been in the Canon universe since the early digital days and I had a Digital Rebel XT and the days of film so I'm not as up on things as I used to be back then.

Are new dream lenses coming for the RF mount? [CR1]

We all have dream lenses that we want Canon to make, most of which never will be. There is now a crazy rumor from Canon Watch about two such lenses that haven’t appeared on our RF mount roadmap.
The first rumored lens would be an RF-S 33mm f/1L USM, which is basically a 50mm lens for APS-C sensors. While the idea would be pretty desireable, Canon never made “L” EF-S lenses, and we’re not sure if that’s going to change with the RF-S mount.
The second lens is an RF 70-300mm f/2-4L IS USM. I don’t even know what to say about this rumor. I don’t think there would be a market for such a lens. We think that once you reach the pricepoint that this lens would sell for, variable aperture wouldn’t be well received. Who knows though, Canon can always do new and interesting things.
We don’t have a lot...

Patent: Canon RF APS-C pancake prime lens optical formulas

It looks like Canon will be bringing one or more RF-S prime lenses for the Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R10. One of the most requested RF-S lenses is unsurprisingly a pancake lens. Keith at Northlight Images uncovered a patent at the USPTO with what looks to be RF-S pancake optical formulas.

Is a Canon EOS R100 coming next year? A budget EOS R APS-C camera [CR1]

WIth the recent announcements for the highly-anticipated Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R10 along with new RF-S lenses, Canon has shown that they’re all-in on APS-C RF mount cameras.
Are they done for now?
It’s not likely, as the first rumors of a Canon EOS R100 have hit the web.  We do think a camera body under the Canon EOS R10 is very likely. We could also see it more closesly resemble the Canon EOS M50 Mark II or Canon EOS M6 Mark II in form factor.
The EOS M lineup of cameras was designed by the PowerShot group within Canon, and with the PowerShot...

Scheduled to try out the R7 at Canon Experience Store next week- any questions you want to ask before I do?

I don't know why I didn't remember sooner, but every time Canon releases a new camera, they offer a hands-on preview experience before the official release date at the Canon stores here in Japan. I made an appointment this morning for next Monday. So if you have any specific questions or things you want me to check out, let me know.

I plan to bring along my R5 so I can make the size and handling comparison for myself. I'm also curious to see how unwieldy the fat RF lenses are on the R7. I'm not super technical or methodical when it comes to testing equipment, so my impressions may be more general. Also, the experience is limited to 15 minutes and I am not allowed to use my own SD cards, so I won't be able to take home any images. But if you have any general questions that may not have already been answered in the zillion YouTube previews, feel free to ask.

Please Take Note Canon

Dear Canon,
It would be really nice if your company (charging us more than an Apple computer, iPad or iPhone) would implement some much needed technology such as tracking our device (due to being lost or stolen). We shouldn't need Apple Air Tag though. When you charge as much for these camera bodies and lenses this stuff should just be a part of your forward thinking technology. I do feel Canon rests on it's prestige quite often and unless pushed isn't pushing.

Patent: Canon RF 11-24mm f/4L and Canon RF 8-24mm f/4L Fisheye

Keith over at Northlight Images has uncovered some optical formulat patents for lenses that are likely to arrive over the next year or so. One being an RF 11-24mm f/4L, which is definitely needed in the RF lineup. A Canon RF 10-24mm f/4L has been on our roadmap for quite some time.
The second is a zoom fisheye lens that builds off the Canon RF 8-15mm f/4L USM. The optical formula in the patent is for a Canon RF 8-24mm f/4L USM, which sounds like a very cool lens. As with the EF version of the zoom fisheye, it will work as a circular fisheye on a full-frame sensor and as a ‘normal’ fisheye on the crop sensors found in the Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R10...

Thoughts of R6 Owners who "upgraded" from a 5D4 (or similar DSLR, or an RP)?

Hi all,

Just want to get the thoughts of folks who previously used a 5D Mark IV, or "5D4" (or other similar 5D camera) who decided to give it up for an R6. What do you like about your “new” R6, and what (if anything) do you miss about your old DSLR? Are you primarily a stills shooter or do you also do video (or want to do video), and did that help influence your decision to switch? Also folks that used to have an RP, but decided to trade it in for an R6 - what do you think? Do you miss the extra resolution? The small size? Do you find it to be more responsive, or more reliable as a camera?

I’m mainly looking to R6 owners here… I’ve been reading reviews, watching videos on how it stacks up to the 5D4 for similar use cases and wanted to get more people’s thoughts. People seem to like the AF system and ability to track. The 5D4 for me has probably the best AF tracking ability (and high ISO performance) of any camera I’ve used thus far. It’s not perfect, of course, far from it, but it has come through more than once when faced with super dimly-lit ice shows. Folks also seem to talk about the eye tracking…but that’s just ok on my RP, so I prefer to just manually move the point myself.

Just would like to know if folks like their R6, if they miss their old DSLR, or even if there's something they wish they knew before they made the switchover from DSLR to MILC...just gathering data for now. I was never one of those looking to completely jump ship to the RF system - costs aside, I think there are still many unknowns about the longevity and reliability of RF lenses and Canon MILCs. That said, I’ve found I've been taking more of a slower, “bottom-up” type approach to this...and as an RP user I find myself starting to look closer at the R6.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Thinking EOS R or RP for Kolari IR Conversion: Thoughts?

Hi All,
Ok...the spend money bug is hitting me, along with wanting to try something new.
I've been looking at this site:
Kolari Full Spectrum IR/UV Camera Conversions

I discovered this site again from this YouTube video that really make this look fun:

So, I got to thinking. I still have my older 5D3, but I kinda want to hang onto that till maybe the R1 is announced and at that point decide which new Canon R camera to replace it with.....

But since I have a bunch of EF lenses I could adapt, I was thinking maybe one of the older first "RF" cameras might be something to use.
And I could also have something I could start using RF glass on when I find deals here or there, etc....

I've been looking maybe to get a R or RP for this permanent conversion. But I don't know much about these two cameras nor what a good price on them currently is...I've just started looking on eBay.

First, what is the major differences between a R and a RP...is it just slightly larger sensor size on the R? Is that the main differentiator?

Has anyone out there done a Kolari IR conversion to a Canon camera? Can you give some experiences? Recommendations? Post a few sample pics?

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

Smartphone Cameras Will Be Superior to SLRs by 2024, Says Sony CEO

MAY 31, 2022 The CEO of Sony’s Semiconductor division claims that smartphone cameras will exceed the quality of single-lens reflex cameras within the next few years, specifically by 2024.

As reported by Nikkei, Sony recently held a business briefing session for its Imaging and Sensing solutions where Terushi Shimizu, President and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions, said that he and his division expect the image quality taken with smartphones to surpass that of those taken by single-lens reflex cameras by 2024, a claim mirrored by presentation materials.

“We expect that still images will exceed the image quality of single-lens reflex cameras within the next few years,” he says.

He argues that this will be possible thanks to the quality of photos that can be achieved by combining its sensors, larger apertures, and computational photography technology.

Associated presentation materials point to Sony’s belief that higher performance camera systems are being developed that are increasing the sensor size and combining that with better image signal processors (ISP) in high-end smartphone models — Sony expects the average size of high-end sensors to double by 2024. These two factors together with what it calls “quantum saturation” and artificial intelligence processing (computational photography), Sony believes that interchangeable lens cameras (ILCs) will be left behind by smartphone technology.
