New Canon CR-X300 4K Outdoor PTZ Camera Provides Connectivity, Flexibility, and Protection from the Elements

Canon is continuing its move into security camera solutions, this time with an extremely robust 4K remote controllable camera. I was hoping for something a bit more affordable than the $13,299 USD pricetag, but I guess I wasn’t the target market.

Upcoming Photo/Video Trip

Friends.

I have been hired by a company in Africa to make promotional films and take promotional photos for their lodges.

They have asked me to cover four lodges over a period of two weeks.

I am very excited and very nervous at the same time. There are so many choices to be made! I am going to list things that are going through my mind here and earnestly request you to please correct me and advise me on anything that will help me with this project.

I am breaking up the equipment and questions in different posts for clarity and will keep updating it based on your thoughts.

I am thanking you all for your help in advance.

Canon will release an APS-C RF mount camera(s) later in 2022 [CR3]

The long rumoured APS-C RF mount camera from Canon is starting to appear more and more likely. I have been told by an solid source that Canon is “definitely” releasing an APS-C RF mount camera in 2022.
Now, I don’t know if we’re talking about something like an “EOS R7” or a camera(s) to take the place of the EOS M line.
More to come…

Review: Canon EOS R3 by The Digital Picture

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Canon EOS R3. Canon’s latest full-frame mirrorless camera which began shipping last week.
Bryan’s closing thoughts
With each new high-end camera iteration, it becomes more difficult to be happy with the newfound annoyances (additional steps or efforts required to get the same job done) of the older models, and the R3 brings out those inadequacies of the other models. The R3 has professional-grade build quality combined with arguably the best AF system ever placed in an interchangeable lens camera. The Eye Control AF, subject detection and tracking performance, Smart Controllers, and a myriad of other features give this camera a review-time advantage over all other models.
The performance of the Canon EOS R3 suggests flagship 1-series membership, and...

Venus Optics announces the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2x Ultra Macro APO, the world’s smallest 2x macro lens

Venus Optics announce the World’s Smallest 2x macro lens for full frame mirrorless cameras: Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2x Ultra Macro APO
Anhui China, 29 November 2021 – Venus Optics, the camera lens manufacturer that has been endeavouring to invent unique lenses, is thrilled to release Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2x Ultra Macro APO, an exceedingly compact and affordable mirrorless full-frame macro lens with excellent image quality. Weighs only 259g, the lens still comes with 2x magnification inherited from most of the Laowa macro lenses which give photographers a wider range of flexibility in creation. The APO design empowers this lens to produce pleasing minimal CA images. It fulfils the needs of many macro photographers while relieving the pain from carrying the heavy load of gears.

Venus-Laowa 85mm Macro for RF

This lens is supposed to be announced today for multiple FF MILC mounts.

R3 and 600 EX II

Just a quick note for those, who like me, have either pre-ordered the AD-E1 shoe adapter or are considering it. I just did a quick test of the R3 and a 600 EX II and it works fine, no adapter needed. As @neuroanatomist had previously said, it appears the only reason to add the AD-E1 is if you need/want to preserve the weather sealing. If you are okay with the hot shoe not being weather sealed when using a strobe, there doesn't seem to be any reason to add the AD-E1 for functionality.

Even though it's one of Canon's cheapest accessories, I'm probably going to cancel my preorder and put the $40 towards cards or something.

R5 did not transfer video files over WiFi

I have been using ftp transfer from my R5 to my Mac. Today I noticed it skipped 3 video files. But they were marked as transferred! So I had to force it to transfer the video files. But I know it worked in the past. I remember disabling sleep mode of sorts after I found my battery drained while the camera was powered off. Not sure if that is the reason why it goes into sleep mode before the ftp transfer has completed. So I had to wake up the camera by touching a button so it would finish transferring all the files. I wonder it had something to do with that (still no excuse, but maybe more likely to encounter the bug). I wondered if anybody else noticed this.

Added ads and more added adds, what gives?

Hi all!

Recently it was added loads of new ways to display ads here on CR. I’m not a Pro member and have long ago accepted ads on the site, I get why they’re there.

I’m fine with ads between posts in the forum, I can live with the full page ad when going from one thread to another. I really dislike the lower banner being in the way and shrinking my screen real estate, but I live with it.

But, now there is a banner on top blocking the menu, much more intensive and intrusive adds effectively blocking me from using the site like intended.

So I changed my browser to Safari and downloaded an adblocker and it was superb, until the site warns me and tries to make me disable the adblocker!

So the free site isn’t free anymore, might as well have it behind a paywall when it can’t be used with the insane amount of content covering ads.

how does other people feel?

Rokinon RF 14mm f/2.8 AF - does focus stay set when on MF?

Pondering getting this lens for use on my R5 or RP. Has gotten some decent reviews (or at least its twin the Samyang has). I know that many use the manual focus RF 14-mm lens for astro work, but seems that the ability to also do AF expands the utility of this glass for landscape and other applications. My specific question, if anyone knows, is if when using manual focus mode on this AF lens (it is focus by wire), will the focus stay set if the camera powers down between exposures or will the focus reset to some baseline range and then need to be refocused for each shot? Back in my EF 14mm days, I could gaffer tape the focus ring once I composed and setup a shot (say Milky Way with a foreground subject) during the daylight hours than take my images after dark without need to refocus. I noticed that the RF 15-35 f/2.8 will not hold the focus when it powers off and wonder if the Rokinon behaves the same way.

Hope that makes sense. Curious to know if any of you have tried this lens.

EOS R3 First Impressions

My first impressions of the Canon EOS R3

I am using Prograde Cobalt cards for CF Express and SD slots in the camera and using ES only.

Buffer Depth:

30 fps
: RAW to CFE only is ~130 to 150 shots depending on the ISO. Buffer clears exceptionally quickly so if you shoot in 2-3 sec burst there will be no issues. If writing RAW to CFE and JPG to SD buffer is essentially the same, but clearing the buffer takes about 4 sec. I did try RAW to both, but this takes much longer to clear the buffer due to the slower SD card. IMO RAW to both cards is not practical. This camera should have two CFE slots given the target audience and the price. With the current limitations, I plan to record to CFE slot and copy images to the SD as a backup. This is not ideal, but the best solution I can think of. With that said, glad the camera records full 14 bit RAWs at 30 fps speed that was one of the key reason for the purchase.

15 fps: RAW to CFE I was able to record 500+ images without hitting the buffer. This is good news because I can see myself using this mode most of the time. I did not test other configurations.

I have never owned a camera with identical cards slots, but for critical assignments I now understand why this is so important. I expect matched slots on a future R1 camera.

Eye Control AF:

I was able to get it to calibrate quite easily and I wear glasses and have hazel eye color. Honestly, I am still getting used to the system, but when I point the camera at a picture of two people I was able to switch between the two just by moving my eye. Seems to work, but will require extensive field testing.

Smart Controller:

This is amazing. Took me awhile to realize how to activate it in the menu system, but a great way to move focusing points. I doubt I will ever use a multi-controller for moving focusing points ever again. Note, I never owned a 1Dx Mk3 so this is my first camera with this feature. Love it.

Overall Ergonomics:

Reminds me a lot of my 1Dx Mk2 that I once owned. Better ergonomics that the R5, the smart controller on the vertical grip is located in a very natural location (i.e., where the thumb rest).

Other Random Thoughts:

1) Because I do not shoot movies, I really like that one can reconfigure the movie switch and movie record button in still modes to other functions. I really like being able to switch into silent mode with a flip of a switch.

2) The lighter weight of the camera is a godsend. I really hope when Canon designs the R1 that that keep the mass to a minimum. I realize that it might be a bit larger than the R3 to accommodate two CFE slots.

This weekend I hope to do some field testing with some native RF lenses, but weather is below 40 F so might be limited to birds on a feeder. I will keep you posted.

Patent: Canon RF 17-70mm f/4-5.6 BR

Canon News has uncovered a patent for a Canon RF 17-70mm f/4-5.6 BR optical formula. This is a pretty detailed patent, and kind of interesting with the inclusion of a BR lens element. A BR element can help in reducing the size required for such a lens.
One drawback as pointed out by Canon News is that this design requires image stretching from 17mm to about 28mm.
This sort of lens design would be a great kit lens for an APS-C RF mount camera that would also work on your full-frame RF mount camera. Which I think is the route Canon will go whenever they announce an APS-C RF mount camera body.

Black Friday buying

The R6 has a 20% discount in the UK starting today, cheaper than the grey market. I couldn't resist ordering one for my wife as it will go nicely with the RF 100-400mm. At f/8 and beyond, the difference in resolution between it and the R5 becomes less important. It's half the price of the R5 here. I mentioned in an earlier post that DxO PL has the habit of introducing an upgrade at the end of October at a 30% or so discount and then an even bigger one for Black Friday. It's happened again, a 50%, and I'll probably upgrade. Topaz is giving some good deals on upgrades.

R5 and Meike Twin Flash sync issue

I have a Meike twin Flash that I like using for macro. It works fine with the 5D4 and R. But with an R5 I get a shutter sync issue where only the bottom of the frame is lit by the flash.

I initially had the shutter set to 1/160, so thought if I slowed it a bit it would fix the issue, but all the way down to a 1 second exposure I have the same issue. I've also tried going from mechanical shutter to electronic 1st curtain, and changing the settings on the flash.

Any ideas on how get this combination to work would be greatly appreciated.
