Canon RF 14-35 f/4L just reviewed by TDP

Well, the lens is not as ideal as I hoped for (barrel distortion at the wide end, less than ideal sharpness at the long end, color fringing, focus breathing, not parfocal), but I'm buying it anyway.

RF 100mm F2.8 L is macro now shipping??

Pre-ordered my RF 100 macro lens from B&H on Jun 1, 2021. Rec'd notification from BH on Aug 15 that my lens was shipping with expedited shipping ETA of Wed Aug 18. Can we assume backlog of orders is finally catching up?? Do hope so. Four wks after this order, I pre-ordered the new RF 14-35 F4Lis zoom. When I get a shipping notice for this transaction, I'll then know that product availability is getting better. Good luck with your Canon orders, wherever you placed them. As an FYI, my CC was not charged until Aug 15 but it should be noted my CC was charged for tripod collar as well, even though it remains on backorder. Lesson learned. Order accessories separately.

UPDATE: Good news....Lens arrived today Aug 17, one day early.

The Canon EOS R3 will eliminate “Lag” and “Blackout” for stills shooters

There is very little new information coming around about the Canon EOS R3, the last being the confirmation of the 24mp resolution sensor.
A small bit of information I did recently receive was about the blackout and/or lag that is present in the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 EVF when shooting still images. It’s not a huge deal for a lot of shooters, but I have seen various critiques about the lag present in the Canon EOS R5 being a bit annoying in certain shooting situations.
I have been told that the Canon EOS R3 will not experience any issues with blackout and/or lag. The new image sensor in the Canon EOS R3 likely has a much faster...

Problems with Canon USA Store

Seeing that the Canon USA Store finally has all three items I’ve been wanting to purchase in stock at the same time, last night I finally ordered them. a
After paying through paypal, my sales confirmation then states one of the items was on back order.

Then, I received my sales confirmation email stating that the three item are in stock.

I called the Canon USA store phone number to get an accurate confirmation. Their automated system informed me that all three items are on back order. Following their automated prompt, I requested to speak to a representative. i listened to their hold music for30 minutes when my wife suggested contacting paypal to see if this transaction can be cancelled. It cannot.
I’m now back on hold hell with Canon. While I’ve read some Canon USA Store horror stories on these forums, I had no issues with them in the pre-pandemic past.
Until this week, one of these lenses has not been in stock for over 6 months. Now I’ve got sizable chunk of money tied up in a transaction that I have doubts will be completed this year. I have doubts I’ll even get a live person on the phone.
I feel I have no recourse, and am wondering if any of the forum members have found a solution to any similar experiences.

R6 video af setup suggestion

Hey guys,

I'm interested in knowing whether there is any work around to be able to switch to video mode without starting AF instantly, but being able to start AF during the recording without going back to the menu (to enable continous af from the menu).
If continous af is disabled, I can switch from photo mode to video without worrying that the R6 would misfocus just before recording starts. On the other hand, I have not found a way, to engage continous af when needed, once recording has started with continous af set to "disable" in the menu.

Being able to start video recording with no AF enabled, but then having the option to engage it during the recording would make lot of sense in my wildlife videography.

How do you guys work around this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Adam

Patent: A new mirrorless camera body design with integrated grip with pass-through

Here is an interesting patent application showcasing what appears to be new design and functionality of an integrated grip mirrorless camera body. At this time, there’s no way to really know if this design is in fact one Canon is moving forward with on a camera body such as an EOS R1, or if it’s just part of the design process.
Japan Patent JP,2021-117300,A  mostly deals with a secure grip for both horizontal and vertical shooting.
This design is quite unique in that there is an open cavity in the body that your fingers can grip through as you can see in the patent illustration below.

This is definitely some out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to...

Patent: Canon RF 100-400mm f/5-7.1 IS USM

I have reported many times about a small and affordable Canon RF 100-400mm zoom lens, and another patent for such an optical formula has appeared.
Canon RF 100-400mm f/5-7.1 IS USM

Focal length: 103.00mm 200.00mm 388.50mm
F-number: 5.00 6.26 7.10
Half angle of view: 11.86° 6.17° 3.19°

This lens has been on our RF lens roadmap for quite some time, but is listed as an RF 100-400mm f/5.6-7.1 IS USM. It will obviously be small, lightweight, and quite affordable when compared to the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM
An RF 100-400mm lens has also appeared internally at...

6D vs. R6 vs. M50

I'm a little stuck, but it's a 1st world problem so no biggie.
I do stationary video indoors for YouTube using my original 6D and 24mm 2.8 IS.
If you get a chance - what's your thoughts on just sticking with that, swap out everything for an R6 (would use my 24 + adapter, for now, and try 4K) or an M50/Sigma 16mm (just to have a dedicated video camera)?
Many thanks.

The specifications for the upcoming Nikon Z 9 leak out ahead of the official announcement

Nikon is readying what can be assumed is their flagship professional mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z 9. An announcement for this camera is expected some time in the next couple of months.
It looks like Nikon is going in a very different direction than Sony’s flagship Alpha 1, and Canon’s EOS R3. The EOS R3 is NOT going to be Canon’s flagship mirrorless camera, as I expect we’ll hear more about the Canon EOS R1 later in 2022.
The Nikon Z 9 was in use at the Tokyo Olympics, but it looks like all EXIF data had been scrubbed from any images taken with the camera. This camera looks to be a true flagship professional mirrorless camera, over the toy that is the Sony Alpha 1.
Nikon released a lackluster flagship DSLR in the Nikon D6, which didn’t offer much in the way of advancement from the previous Nikon D5. It looks like they put a lot of R&D dollars in the new Nikon Z 9 and other Z mount...

Peter McKinnon shows off the Canon EOS R3

Peter McKinnon has posted a video showing a couple of Canon EOS R3’s in his possession. He is not allowed to post and videos or photographs taken from the camera as of yet, but he does give a rundown of some of the features and size comparisons between the EOS R3 and EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R5.
There’s a cringeworthy Squarespace plug in the middle of the video, but other than that, it should give you a bit of insight into the R3 and how it may handle.

R5 tilted screen issue

Hi,

I've recently bought R5. In my copy when the screen is closed like on the image below it's not stiff and easily tilts up and down when pushed a little from the bottom.

It's hard to describe so I've created an image that describes the issue.

I've checked 2 other copies of R5 and none of them exhibits this problem, I also have R6 and it also has no issue.

The shop claims it's normal, but sent it for repair.
Authorized service inspected the camera, and "repaired it" with no positive results. Screen is still tilted.

Do you have a similar thing with the screen on your R5?

Thank you for your help.

Canon EOS R5 - Cable Protector - Mismatched to ports? Threads don't reach?

I just purchased a Canon EOS R5, as after some years hiatus, I'm getting back into terrestrial photography. The R5 has been getting rave reviews, and seems to deliver exceptional image quality (which is great, as I still have a huge collection of Canon lenses). I haven't really had a chance to test the camera out as I am waiting for the Canon control ring EF-EOS R adapter. In the mean time, I've been playing around with the camera, figuring out all of its featuers.

There is one thing that just doesn't seem to work, and I suspect either I have a bad part, or the part is just designed incorrectly? The "Cable Protector" which is documented at the bottom of this page:

It simply doesn't seem to work. I cannot for the life of me get it connected. It seems like the protector should sort of snap into place, then get locked into place by threading in the thumb screw. However it neither snaps, nor does the thread on the thumb screw even reach the small thread embedded in the camera body. I've oriented it every way I can think of, and tried to press it into place rather firmly...and it simply does not fit.

Has anyone else played with this part and gotten it to attach properly?

IBIS comparison: Canon EOS R5 vs Sony α1

The-Digital-Picture has completed an exhaustive comparison between the Canon EOS R5 and Sony α1 and IBIS performance between the two cameras.
The comparison has 680 highly analytical test subject results, which should quash any risk out outliers. Both cameras perform extremely well in these tests, but it looks like the Canon EOS R5 performs just a little bit better.
From The-Digital-Picture
I experience a 1/3 – 2/3 stop advantage with the Canon camera. That difference is not dramatic, and the bottom line is that IBIS is valuable in both camera brands. This feature adds substantially to the versatility of non-stabilized lenses, such as the 50mm f/1.2 models tested here. IBIS is one more reason to love the latest mirrorless camera models. Gordon Laing reviews the 8K quality from the Canon EOS R5

Reviewer Gordon Laing has done a video showcasing the 8K quality from the Canon EOS R5. The video was recorded, edited, and posted to YouTube in all of its 8K glory.
The quality of the 8K video from the EOS R5 looks great to me, and if you can work around some of the perceived weaknesses, you’re going to get great results from the camera.
So get some coffee while the 8K buffers and enjoy the samples.

Canon U.S.A., Inc. Focuses on Consumer Safety with an Anti-Counterfeit Consumer Education Microsite Update

MELVILLE, NY, August 9, 2021 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is taking the opportunity to spotlight its commitment to anti-counterfeit consumer education and safety awareness. Optical Limits makes interesting comments about 3rd party RF lenses in reviewing Samyang / Rokinon AF 14mm f/2.8 RF

"As of the time of this review, Samyang has been the only third-party manufacturer offering AF lenses in Canon RF mount - namely the Samyang (Rokinon) AF 14mm f/2.8 RF & AF 85mm f/1/4 RF ... but their status is unclear. Canon R-mount is a closed ecosystem with Canon obviously not willing to issue mount/protocol licenses. But it seems as if there's even more to it. Samyang appears to have reverse-engineered the protocol but, at least according to messages on social media, they are about to stop manufacturing AF lenses for R-mount (because Canon threatened them?). The future of these lenses is therefore foggy at best. However, you can still buy the AF 14mm f/2.8 RF for as little as 650USD/EUR making it an attractive alternative to the superb but expensive, native Canon RF lenses. The lens is also available in Sony E-mount using the same optical formula - with Sony's blessing apparently."

By the way, reverse engineering is not illegal and a perfectly valid way of not infringing intellectual property.

Canon is #1 in global market share for digital cameras in 2020, and their share grew

Canon has been the global leader in camera market share for a couple of decades now, and that has continued through 2020, and Canon’s market share actually grew over 2019 according to the latest numbers by Nikkei (paywalled).
The bad news is that the global camera market shrunk by 40% in 2020, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but 2021 should see an increase in the total number of cameras sold, but I don’t think it’ll recover from that 40% drop in one calendar year.
The two cameras that had a big part in increasing Canon’s market share are likely the EOS R5 and EOS R6 which Canon has said repeatedly have blown past sales expectations. The EOS M50 series of cameras are also still big sellers for Canon.

The focus shift issue with the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro revisited in revised review

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture completed his full review of the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM last month, and one of the negative issues that stood out was the focus shift that he experienced with the new RF macro lens.
In the spirit of being thorough, Bryan got himself a second copy of the RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro to see if he had received a bad copy, or if the shift was by design. It looks like it’s the latter.
Did I get a bad copy of the Canon RF 100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM Lens? My guess was no. Supporting that theory was a technical rep confirming the issue with his lens. The test results shared above have been forwarded to the Canon lens team in Japan. Read the full review

Maximising battery life

I was hoping to tap in to some knowledge from the forum on maximising battery longevity.

With my previous DSLRs I never had the need to have more than one battery, with my R5 this is now a must.

My question is should I use my batteries evenly of just use one more than the others? My understanding battery life is all about charge cycles, but do batteries degrade just sitting there?

how do you all manage this?

A few CarePak and Canon SOP questions

I dont understand Canon.... I have CarePak on my equipment, 2 bodies and multiple lenses. Yet when i go to my Profile on their site, only 2 CarePaks show.

Ive tried more than once to get the others to show by calling Canon and re-submitting the proofs of purchase, etc., but they cant seem to get the info to show.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Also, I have had my 7DMkII and lenses worked on more than once by Canon, yet the Service History is empty when i look at the details on their site. How come? Do others not see their history if the equipment has been worked on?
