Canon, it's time for a Mark II of the RF 35 1.8 IS

I got the RF 35 on launch day, I love it, but I also hate it. It's buzzy, loud, kind of on the cheap feeling side, and i hate the extending barrel.

Honestly i wouldn't mind if Canon dropped the macro feature. Make it internally focusing. Make it nice and metal like, or at the very least, higher quality like, like the EF 35 F2 IS at least. But OK.. keep the macro feature and just make it a little bigger so the lens can focus internally. Yes, physics will dictate lens length, so if needed drop the macro feature.

While we're at it lets do the same with the RF 85 F2 and lets add a 100mm F2. Lets also get back to less reliance/no reliance on software to apply corrections. We don't mind if the lenses are bigger.

Long time digital canon shooter since original 5D launch day so i have some good experience w/ EF system. I feel like Canon is going kinda cheap feeling with its offerings and lacked the polish of the gear of the old days with silent focusing, internal focusing, etc. why are we going backwards with cheap loud buzzy lenses and cheap exteriors etc. my 17-40L feels way nicer than the RF 14-35 i owned.

New Password feature in Firmware Updates: Rudy Winston Video

Looks like there are multiple threads on the Firmware updates for the difference cameras.

Canon USA just posted a video on the new password protection that will accompany the new firmware.

This looks to be rolled out to multiple cameras.

The quick summary is that:
  • you can disable this feature if you would like at set up by the "do not ask again" box
  • This is not a theft deterrence feature. It seems like it is more in order to comply with EU identity protection regulations
  • You can reset the password, but it will wipe all settings (including personal information) from the camera. Which, if implemented how I understand, is why it is not a theft deterrence (feature).
But, if you are like me and you have very much personalized your camera and do not want to enter a 6 pin code each time you turn on your camera or wake it up, you need to check that box when you set up your password.

Edit: Craig has a news article here: https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-r3-firmware-v1-9-0-now-available/
but it doesn't show up and it seems I can't reply to it as I'm "not logged in". Surely you're joking, Mr Wordpress.

Away Game

I have been shooting home games fora pro soccer team (Champions League) this year and was getting pretty bored. But we had an away game that was only a 4 hour drive. They have a much better stadium and the Uniforms were all new. I felt like a new man.

Breathing New Life Into Legacy Canon Cameras: Magic Lantern Returns

Magic Lantern is an open-source firmware extension for Canon DSLR cameras to add features that extend functionality for both photographers and videographers. We wanted to talk about Magic Lantern and discuss it with the new development team as there seemed to be newfound energy around the project. But first, to talk about the present you must know the past. So, let’s take a step back to the birth of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and follow the project through the years.

Autofocus Stress Test: Can Canon’s Dual Pixel AF II

While Canon’s Dual Pixel AF II system is known for accuracy and speed, its real-world performance in challenging environments rarely gets a true stress test. I put this innovative system through the most brutal focusing scenarios—low contrast, fast motion, foreground interference, and edge-of-frame compositions—to see if it lived up to the hype.

A Never Before Seen Lens Coming From Canon

We have been told by a very reliable source that Canon is scheduled to announce a "Never-before-seen zoom lens from Canon" The lens in question is not of the "big white" variety, but more a "general" use lens. We may have a slightly different idea of what a general use lens is, but I think it sits somewhere in the 16-135mm focal range

Canon USA Web Site broken?

I'm finding it impossible to navigate the Canon USA web pages. When I do, I get a "not authorized to access" notice about the third page visited instead of pages, and this persists on all Canon pages until I delete the Canon cookies from my browser (using Chrome). Unfortunately, it then recurs once I start trying to prowl the site again. Are any of you experiencing this?

OM Systems......

This board should also have third-party cameras. When it can be done, it will be done.

The Ramble

I figured I'd ramble on about my "small camera" adventure. It's been six months of indecision, and it finally came to an end today. I forced the issue. I was in Tbilisi last week and didn't have a camera besides my phone. Walking around a city with an R1 is.... You know... I was pretty annoyed by not having a camera, so it was time to jump into something.

I shot a couple of rolls with the Mamiya 6, which is excellent, but I'm still slow as heck with that camera. I do love film.

OM Systems

I wanted a small camera with a fast prime. I travel to cities with just one camera and one prime, and that's it. I don't like any of the small Canon cameras at all, and they're not that small once you attach a fast lens to one of them.

I looked at Fuji cameras over and over; Great cameras and lenses, but for whatever irrational reason, I don't like Fuji as a company. It is what it is.

Sony? Never. Panasonic? A couple of them are interesting, Nikon? I gave them a look. I considered the EOS M for about 28 seconds, and then I remembered all the mean things I had said about the series. :D

The only small camera that didn't feel and look like a "creator" camera and didn't cost a ton was the OM-5. The OM-5 II is 95% identical and twice the price of a used OM-5.

So I traded a pile of stuff I didn't use anymore to MPB, and went with the OM-5 and Zuiko 17 f/1.2 Pro. Where is the 14mm f/1.2? Everyone hates me and my 28mm desires, except for Leica, but I've grown out of that.

Expectations?

A small camera, with a nice lens and roll. ISO, sensor size, DOF... whatever, that wasn't part of the equation. Being built like tanks was on my mind.

I have the R1s to spray and pray, and I love it. There's a time and place for one.

After the trade-ins, the kit cost me 400 bucks. It would have taken forever and been annoying to sell all the Atomos stuff privately.

I'm back in Tbilisi soon, and I'll have a camera!

Exploring The History of Innovation: The Canon EOS 5 Series

Since its introduction, the Canon 5D line has had a significant presence in the professional and prosumer photography segment. The 5D line was first introduced in August 2005, and its release stunned the photographic world by offering a full-frame sensor at an affordable price for photographers. After the introduction of the 5D, more people could afford full-frame cameras, whether they were working professionals or hobbyists.

Apple clains 20 stops of DR in new sensor

All your shadows and highlights will belong to Apple!

Key items from story:
* dynamic range of 120dB (almost 20 stops)
* stacked sensor with low noise
* Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor
* Built in noise-sensing circuitry
* 3 transistor pixel design

Is this possible?

Is it possible for the IBIS to move at 1/400th shutter speed while walking? I've been suspicious for a while but I just did a real test where it became clear that with stitching on (IBIS+RF 24-70 2.8), the image becomes blurry when walking. My camera is an R6 Mark II and I use an EFCS shutter.
The attached pictures show three consecutive photos taken while walking, with continuous focus on the wheel (Camera: R6 Mark II, Lens: RF 24-70 2.8, Focal length: 70mm, Aperture: f/5, Shutter: 1/400th). Only one of the three is sharp, the rest are blurred.
Has anyone experienced this? With R5 I think it's pretty much the same.

Thanks in advance.
