Canon R5 color difference between VF and back screen

any one of you guys noticed color difference between VF and back screen, the VF is more greenish and cooler and the back screen is wormer, I tried the Screen and Viewfinder Color Tone and the Fine-Tuning Viewfinder Color Tone in the set menu, the VF is more accurate so no need to fine tune but you can't fine tune the back screen which it is the less accurate.

R5 joystick press sensitivity

Hi All,

Looking to hear your user experience with the joystick on the R5. So far I have been using it for AF point selection but find that it often registers a ‘press’ when I am trying to make a vertical / horizontal AF point movement. This results in the AF point being moved to the centre which is pretty annoying. I have tried being very gentle and just tapping the side of the joystick so there is little downward pressure, but even doing that it still happens occasionally.

I have noticed this on the camera body and also the battery grip (with the battery grip being ever so slightly worse).

How have you all been going with the joystick for AF point movement? Ever run into this over sensitivity with registering a press?

At this point I am considering going back to touch and drag.

Thanks!

Purchasing gear from Greentoe

I ran across this US site called Greentoe where you make an offer on an item and "a network" of retailers decide if they want to accept it or not. I recently made a bid on an OMD EM5 Mark III kit for $1250 and it was accepted. I also made a bid on an EF 100mm macro lens for $999 for fun, which was also accepted. I didn't think it would be, so I actually canceled that order. But the Olympus kit is now on the way, so the site seems legit. They sell all different kinds of products, but it seems the camera gear comes from one specific retailer on the East Coast. When you buy an item you agree to not divulge the name of the retailer, so I guess I can't say who it is. Their gear is all new with a 30 day return policy (from the ship date, not arrival date) and free shipping. I live in California and I noticed they didn't even charge me sales tax, which is now a no-no apparently, but I'm not complaining. Has anyone used them before?

Also apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Forums link on Home Page: Not dropping down?

Hello,
Just something I noticed I think past couple days maybe?
But when on the home page. In the past from the home page, I could click on the right side of the Forum link on the left menu, and it would drop down and I could select a sub menu, my favorite is Threads with Your Posts.

But for the past couple days or so...it changed.

On the home page, I now have to click the forums menu, and then it takes me to the Forums Page.

When on the Forums Page, then...I can click the forums rt side of the menu...and it will drop down.

I saw this happen awhile back when we had some upgrades and big problems on the front page and site....smeared logos, etc.

But once all was fixed, the menu worked as it used to...until just a day or so ago.

Anyway, I kinda miss being able to hit the menu sub menus from the Home page....is there any way we can go back to that?

I'm currently using latest version of Safari on OS X Catalina if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance,
cayenne

There is a Cinema EOS R camera in the pipeline, likely for early 2022 [CR2]

There have been a few rumors since the launch of the EOS R that a Cinema EOS model would be coming to the mirrorless lineup. I haven’t heard anything about such a camera for more than a year. That has changed this week, as it looks like we will see an “EOS R5c” in early 2022. I’m just calling it the R5C to keep things easy.
I have been told that the camera will have a slightly different body design than the EOS R5, likely to combat heat and some ergonomic changes.
The only other information the source knew is that it will definitely have internal ND’s, Canon Log 2 and 3. The source wasn’t sure which image sensor was going to be featured in the camera, so I don’t know whether it’s a 4K or 8K camera.
More to come…

Old User but R5 Newbie wants ebook–not summary of menus

I've been shooting Canon cameras going back to rangefinders, digital since the D30 (not 30D), most 1 series up through 1DX II, and 5D4. For reasons which may or may not be good ones, including having tons of L series EF glass, I recently purchased an R5 (kit). I've worked my way through most of the printed manual, and downloaded the "advanced" manual, but feel if they are adequate guides to menus, but not to how, and when, to use the new features, or newer features that result from mirrorless.

I've purchased a lot of guides and manuals over the years for Canon cameras, but most are at best restatements of the Canon manual. They translate English into English. I need practical advice from an experienced photographer, preferable in one place. Can anyone make a suggestion?

Anybody shooting with an R5 tethered in C1?

I'm starting to do more freelance studio work and want to shoot tethered in Capture One. I did a test shoot the other day and the transfer from camera to C1 was excruciatingly slow, taking seconds per image to render which added up very quickly for bursts of images. I'm shooting on an R5 going through a CalDigit TS3 Plus into my PC laptop (I'd have to look into specs).

As far as I can tell with the USB/Thunderbolt 3 ports and cords I'm using, I should be transferring at 5Gb/s so I'm not sure what the bottleneck is or if there isn't one and this is normal. I couldn't find any information about people's experience using the R5 tethered so I figured I would ask here.

At my job we shoot on Nikon D5's and I'll step away, shoot 20 or so photos quickly and have them at least mostly loaded by the time I get back to my computer. The D5 is a 20 Mp camera vs 45 on the R5 so I get it being faster but I did switch the R5 to APS-C mode which did make it render faster but it still felt much slower than at work.

I have a lot more testing to do on my own but if anybody has any input I would really appreciate it!

Canon Service Plan General Consensus?

I'm just curious as to what the general consensus is with purchasing Canon's Service plans for lenses. If you have purchased the service plan, how was the actual service and process? Was it easy or did you have to jump through hoops? If you purchased it did you find value in it? If you didn't purchase the service plan, why not? Trying to establish a pros/cons list for these expensive investments!

Canon EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM vs RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM

Hi all. I have a EOS R5 and I already own a RF 16-35mm f/2,8 and a RF 70-200mm f/2,8 along with the EF 300mm f/4 and the EF 8-15mm f/4 fisheye.

Now I have a question since I own also an EF 24-70mm F/2.8L I USM zoom lens. Is it worth accodording to your opinion to sell/upgrade this current zoom lens and get the either the EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM or the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM?
I ask because not always newest products are necessary better. Price vs image quality is also an important factor to consider.

What is your opinion in this repect?

Thanks in advance.

My R5 is super: not had a single freeze, focusses fast and accurately, and delivers sharp images. But, as usual for me, the battery life is short. I don't spend much time chimping, it's set to eco mode, the rear LCD is always off and I use just the viewfinder, airplane mode is on and I have disabled everything that I can think of that would use power. I tend to take short bursts of 3-4 shots or less. My main lenses are the RF 100-500mm or adapted 100-400mm II or 400mm DO II. Yet, whereas early discussion here had people getting 1000s of shots per charge, I now get a couple of 100 only.

All comments by those who don't use telephotos are welcome even if you don't vote.

Here are some crazy Canon EOS R1 specifications [CR0]

Well, here we have the first specifications for the Canon EOS R1 (the flagship RF mount camera). Things are slow at the moment, so why the heck not?
Please note the [CR0] rating
Canon EOS R1 Specifications: (Rumored)

Approx: 85MP at 20fps, 21MP at 40fps unlimited continued shooting
Full Sensor Large Quad Pixel Auto Focus

There are a few things on this specifications list that scream nonsense, but I’ll let you decide for yourself.

Canon may introduce a new menu system in upcoming cameras [CR2]

I have been told a couple of times now that Canon is working on a new menu system for upcoming cameras. I don’t know how far along in development Canon is, but I would think the EOS R1 would be a good place to introduce something new.
One of the sources claims that you will be able to select the “Canon Classic” menu system or the new menu system on your camera. This makes a lot of sense, lots of people love familiarity, especially on professional bodies, but new users to the system would probably be inclined to learn the new menu system.
Canon has always had a great menu system, but I think it has started feeling cumbersome on the EOS R5, as the breadth and depth of options continue to grow.
Before you ask, I doubt we would see a firmware update to give cameras like the EOS R5 or EOS R6 the new menu system.

Canon will announce more lenses at one time than ever before in the 2nd half of 2021 [CR2]

The first half of 2021 is not going to be an exciting time for Canon shooters. The company continues to work on getting over the supply chain and manufacturing issues, something that is apparently going to be resolved by late March.
A source with a stellar track record has told me that Canon will announce more lenses at once than ever before. The lenses will have different shipping dates, but Canon is going to make a “massive splash with a new camera and many many lenses”.
I have posted the known RF lens roadmap a couple of times, and you can check it out here. Keep in mind that the list may not be complete.
One lens not on the roadmap is a dedicated RF mount macro lens, I have been told numerous times that we’ll see one this year, but I don’t yet know the focal length or speed.
There will be a lot more information on this topic in the coming weeks, I can’t say why, but things should start to come into focus.

70-200 f4, finally arrived

My shop called to tell me the 70-200 f4 had finally arrived in their hands, a few hours before the start of the NHL game.

Just enough time to take it for its first walk in the park so to speak.
An 80 dollar parking ticket for an expired meter, by 6 minutes, outside the shop (because Montreal SUCKS that way and loves to whack you at every possible chance), I made it to the rink.
When I see a lens review and they talk about tracking moving objects, and they show a person walking at a leisurely pace etc, I never take the review seriously.
How fast can a lens jump back on the play when a ref or another player skates through the frame is important, can it follow a player sprinting right towards you?

I brought my 70-200 2.8 EF, just in case, and never used it.
The RF performed very, very well. It focused as well or better than the 2.8 EF with an adapter on the R5. Being so much lighter, I found I took the camera away from my eye less often than I use to with a 1dx mk 2 and the EF 70-20 2.8.

Tomorrow I will go through the folder again and pull out extra 'beauty shots' for the archives, but at quick glance, I do not forsee carrying the 2.8 EF to the rink for the next game this Thursday night.

Problems with high speed flash sync. Are the highest shutter speeds electronic?

I had a photoshoot a couple of days ago shooting a backlit subject and using high speed sync so that I could use a shallow depth of field. Camera is EOS R and flash is Godox AD200 (lens EF 85/1.8)
At high shutter speeds (1/6000 and 1/8000) I have noticeable banding from the flash in the image. No banding visible elsewhere. First image.
The issue is almost invisible at 1/3000. Second image.
I know that the flash pulses rapidly so that it can sync with a focal plane shutter. Are the highest shutter speeds on the R electronic so that such banding would show?
Anyone else experienced this?
Tips for removing the banding would be appreciated. I might try selective blurring in Photohop.
In the future I'll use a neutral density filter in situations like this.

R5 IBIS + Lens IS

Question: IBIS and lens IS are great to have but does the R5 automatically make any adjustments because of this? For instance, in Av Mode, if I am not tracking a moving object, the R5 will adjust the shutter speed and Iso (auto Iso). With IBIS and lens IS, can the R5 adjust to a slower shutter speed and/or lower Iso than would have been made if IBIS and lens IS were not present?

Canon EL-1: Activating the modeling lamp remotely

Has anyone discovered if it's possible to activate the modeling lamp on your remote EL-1's? It seems you can activate modeling flash (burst of flashes over 1 second) but not the actual LED lamp which I find quite odd. I've tested every possible setting and I believe that you can only activate the lamp for focus assist with the unit that is attached to your camera. That's a bit of a let down to have to manually press the button any time you need to activate the modeling lamp, especially if it's in a position that's out of reach. Otherwise these guys are pretty fantastic. I'll attach a bare-bulb sample below. Also, keep in mind they won't fit in the older Godox S1 bracket. Found that out a little too late and had to use my 600. They will fit in the S2 bracket but it is tight.
