Adapting a Canon FD 400 f/2.8 to mirrorless/EOS. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Hello all,
I have a chance to score a FD 400 2.8 lens from a friend possibly. I've not seen it yet, but he says in pretty good shape.
We've not talked price yet.

First, as far as Canon bodies go, I'm still on my 5D3.
I've spent some $$ past year on some other bodies and systems....and right now saving up for maybe an R5, and possibly waiting to see what happens with the R1 if it comes out when I'm saved up and looking to drop the hammer.

So, I thought I'd understood that FD lenses either couldn't be adapted to EF cameras....at least in the past, but possibly now there are some adapters that can be used.

Can anyone with experience with FD on EOS bodies give me some input as to what your experience is, and what the better adapter(s) are to get?

Again, the Canon mirrorless system is in my future, and one thing I like about mirrorless, is resurrecting older vintage lenses on mirrorless with adapters.

At this time, my mirrorless cameras I have are my GFX100 and me Leica M10 monochrom.

I'm looking at adapters for those....but that's for other forums.

But when I look at vintage lenses, I'm looking to adapt them for as many of my camera systems as possible.

So, first questions here...adapting FD to EOS.....for my 5D3.

Next...is anyone familiar with this lens in general? What do you like/dislike about it?

What would be a reasonable price on a used FD 400 f/2.8?

Thank you in advance!!

Video products coming from Canon in 2021 [CR2]

I have been told that Canon still has plans to release a slew of new video products in 2021. These cameras sell in lower numbers than consumer cameras, so production may not suffer from the same volume issues in the supply chain.
New specifications for the cameras below have been hard to come by, as most of these cameras have had their launch delayed. There may not be the usual rumor cycle this year.
Canon XF505

Replacement for the XF205
Same 1″ sensor as the XF705
12G-SDI output and SD cards
An integrated zoom lens with 15x zoom
BP-A batteries

Canon XC20

Replacement for the XC10/XC15
Same 1″ sensor as the XF705
CFexpress slot for internal RAW recording
SD cards for XF-AVC/MP4 recording
An integrated lens with 10x zoom and constant f2.8 aperture
LP-E6NH batteries

Canon Cinema EOS C50

These specifications have been around for a long time, and with the delay in announcement, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some tweaks to the specifications.

R5 custom buttons: switch between eye AF and one shot, hold thumb down?

I've configured my AF-ON and * buttons to toggle between Servo/Face+Tracking and One Shot/Spot AF per the Northrup's latest video here:

The reconfigured * button works fine. However when I press the reconfigured AF-ON button, it shows a blue box without providing the option of toggling between eyes using the joystick, and I need to hold down the AF-ON button with my thumb.

- How do I configure the AF-ON with the full Face+Tracking+Eye-Detect so that it shows the white box around the eyes with the the two arrows?
- How do I configure the AF-ON so that I don't need to hold down my thumb on the AF-ON button?

I must have missed something in their instructions but I can't figure out what it is. Thanks!

Canon R6 Exposures Progressively darker in Continuous Shooting?

So an ULTRA strange thing occurred yesterday while shooting a wedding. My typical technique for group photos has been to count down from 3 and then start shooting a sequence of 3-5 images at 1. This way I ensure I don’t get blinkers in my shots. LOL But anyway, now to my point. I performed this task yesterday like I normally would and -for whatever reason- I had the camera on auto ISO. I use auto ISO at weddings fairly often, but during a portrait session in controlled light, I probably shouldn’t have because there was no need. It does make things easier when I want to quickly change aperture on the fly without thinking.

That said, something extremely EXTREMELY odd happened while I was taking my shots. The longer I held the shutter button down, the darker my images became. Like...down by almost 2 stops. It appeared to lower the exposure by 1/3 of a stop per image or more. I had never seen this before at ALL...like, I’ve never experienced anything like this in the past. I wasn’t able to replicate it on ever image, but I could tell when it was happening in the viewfinder because the liveview preview would become darker. At that point I could have taken the camera out of auto ISO, but it wasn’t ruining the shots and I was determined to troubleshoot the situation.

Long story long, I couldn’t identify what was causing this to happen and I wanted to see if anyone else here might have experienced this and what the issue was. The R5 has never done this, but the R6 did. When I get home I’m going to spend a ton of time trying to identify what the cause of this is and I’ll report back. Until then, has anyone had this issue?

Lens used was the RF 24-70 f/2.8L.

Canon R5 - Another with Autofocus issues!

What is everyone settings for their auto focus on the Canon R5?
I took the camera out for a field test yesterday and took what I thought was a selection of cracking images however when I got home and loaded them onto the Mac this was not the case.
I shoot mostly wildlife (roe deer) at dawn and dusk so low light performance is key.
The camera would not use its eye detection function at all and kept wanting to jump on their rear hind or the nearest tree. I put this down to the lowlight however with Roe and the big black noses and massive black eyes I thought it would have locked on easily?
I have attached a couple of unprocessed images as examples to see the issues I’m having.
Taken with a 500mm F4 IS ii with 1.4 ex iii and canon adapter, shot in fully manual mode (no auto iso).
The first image of the roe was taken from around 30m from behind cover. It was 30min before sunrise under exposed to prevent pushing the iso higher.
The deer was very still trying to look for me. I was easily able to put the centre focus point on his eye- easy shot. The camera has decided to focus on the reeds behind him and this was the same in every shot. I have taken the same shot with my 5D4 countless times and never had this issue.
these deer are very camouflaged against usual bushes an brambles and they are hard to spot. I could maybe understand it then, but with the light reeds behind why would the camera get confused? Even with its contrast based AF system?
The noise at ISO 4000 is also incredible! Reminds me of my 7Dmkii.
The second image of a squirrel (30min after sunrise) was the only image where the eye detection was keen to lock onto his eye and hold it. To me it looks like the branch just in front of his nose is the focus point though?
Auto focus micro adjustment isn’t available for the R5 otherwise that would be my first port of call.
I have never had these problems with my 5D4 or the 5D3 where their inferior AF systems performed great.
I am beginning to think I have a faulty R5? It only seems to work in perfect light. Its like my old 7Dmkii, just awful in low light and lots of noise.
Using case 1 or 2 mostly, BBF set up (with star button for eye detect).
This is not the camera I was lead to believe in all the glowing reviews. I held off on mirrorless because I feared the above issues and believed everything had been ironed out. Seriously unimpressed - Any ideas before i ditch it?

Snow Moon

Snow Moon tonight and tomorrow. Full moon shots are pretty boring because of the lack of shadows and hence detail. But I had some fun putting a 2x and 3xTC on the 400mm f/4 DO II on the R5 to give 2400mm f/24. Hand held at 1/1250s, the main difficulty was holding it steady enough to get its 5000px height into into the 5464px height of the sensor. Here is the image downsized to 2048px to the site's accepted size. Image contrast enhanced with Clearview+ in DxO PL4.

What about lenses for future R camera bodies?

I've posted this question over at 'Digital Photography Review', but I thought I might also open the discussion here as well.

My current camera, the 6DII, gives really good image quality at 26.2mp, and is worth its $1,400 price as an entry-level full-frame pro camera. I have no complaints with it. But I'd like to step up to the higher image quality of the R5, whose 45mp resolution shouldn't be too high for my L lenses to handle, even though they're not the absolute newest version. What throws a monkey wrench in all this is the rumored 90mp R5s (as it has popularly come to be known).

I'm convinced that the R5s will indeed be released, this year or next, if only because Canon is being pushed by Sony. Rumor has it that the price will be similar to the R5, which gives me the indication that the R5 will be for sports, wedding and newspaper/magazine photography, while the R5s would be for landscape/cityscape, fashion and architectural photography. As a serious amateur photographer, my main forte is the landscape/cityscape genre, so naturally I would be most interested in the R5s. But that leads me to ask about lenses.

How good would the processed RAW images from the R5s look when captured by my L lenses? Would they resolve the full 90mp quality, or would new lenses, built just for the R5s, be required. If the latter, then I'm not so sure I'd want the R5s, as the investment in new lenses just wouldn't be worth the extra image quality.

If anyone would like to venture a speculative opinion on this, I would certainly appreciate your input.

Review: Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM by TDP

Bryan at The Digital Picture has completed his exhaustive review of brand new Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM. A lens that really showcases Canon’s ability to make new and unique designs for older dependable lenses.
It shouldn’t shock us that Bryan came away thoroughly impressed with the new offering from Canon, and I personally can’t wait to get my hands on one.
From TDP
The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Lens was a game-changer, and the Canon RF 70-200mm F4 L IS USM Lens is the same, taking the game down to a new size and weight low. Those carrying this frequently-needed telephoto zoom lens for extended periods will love this lens’s new size and weight.
As part of the elite L-series, the RF 70-200 lens is extremely well built, including environmental sealing. As said before, this lens is ready for the rigors of daily professional use. The smooth external design...

Upgrading soon from 5DIII, need thoughts on lenses

Like the title says...upgrading from Trusty 5DIII to an R5. I will need to buy the adapter for existing 28-105L, 16-35L, 100 Macro.
I also have a 70-200 f/4L mk i that I am I am looking to upgrade that to either 1. EF100-400 mki, 2. EF100-400 mkii), or 3. the RF100-500.

I intend to sell both 5Diii and 70-200 to defray some cost which isn't a huge factor, but there is a large gap ($1000-$3000) in price between a nice used 100-400 mki and the 100-500. I have used a rented 100-400mk1, and it's a great lens...thoughts?

The next Canon EOS R5 firmware update is coming soon

If people can’t get a new camera, they definitely want some feature updates for the Canon EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III. Most of the talk I get about new firmware is for the EOS R5. Solid information about future EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III feature updates haven’t been very fruitful.
Firmware v1.3.0 was supposed to be in the hands of external testers/reviewers some time in February, and I’ve been told by a couple of people that this has yet to happen. As we continue to navigate the pandemic, additional challenges and delays can obviously be expected.
I have been told that there are a couple of early April dealer events in regards to the new firmware in a couple of countries. This could be telling about the timeline for...

Canon production issues to be resolved by the end of March

I have spoken to multiple retailers in Canada, Europe and the United States and it appears that Canon has been informing them that camera and lens inventory issues will likely be resolved by the end of March.
No one went into great detail, as I’m sure Canon didn’t either. We can just assume that the supply chain is going to improve to normal levels following the Chinese New Year and quarantine regulations for factories.
With that, we can get ready for major camera and lens announcements in and around June. One retailer did mention that there would be new NDA’s signed in April or May. I was told a while ago the first half of 2021 would be a bit boring, but that the second half of the year would be exciting.
More to come…

Patent: Full-Frame fixed lens camera

HiLowsNote has uncovered an odd patent showing us a full-frame fixed lens camera lens optical formula. The lens design here is not impressive, as it’s quite slow at f/4.5-8.
While I have always wanted Canon to make a camera like the Leica Q or Sony RX1 series, I don’t think what we have here will ever become a consumer product.
It’ll be interesting to see if anything comes from this.
