Focus Assist Light fires even though it is disabled

I know I'm missing something but I cannot seem to get the EOS R5 Autofocus Assist Light Beam to stop firing. I do a lot of manual-focus photography of macro subjects and, although it does NOT have an effect on the actual exposures, I would like to get the AFALB to shut off. It depletes the battery somewhat I'm sure and also delays the exposure. I have set the menu item AF-2 "AF-assist beam firing" to "OFF" but it stills pulses for every shot. Does anyone have any ideas or have you found a way to truly disable it?
Duuh, stupid mistake for sure... I had the 2-second timer on. Sorry to bother anyone.

Canon RF 85mm F2 Full Review

Hello Guys,

Gordon has finished his, as one of the first, review of the new RF 85mm F2 IS STM lens. He compares it to the RF85mm F1.2L and the ancient EF 85mm F1.8.
As I own the later lens my personal interest was such a review to evaluate If I can justify the 680€ extra money.

In m case, I think I will update the the new RF lens, because of the two reasons: Much better detail and contrast, and the much smaller closeup focus distance.
Here is the video for own judments, have fun:

Cheers Stefan

SD cards in R5

My R5 is not here yet, but I was wondering if one can use UHS 1 SD cards in the R5? I know the performance will be limited, but is it possible and has anybody tried?

I have a ton of those laying around; just wondering if they will still be useful; albeit not the fastest...CF express and even UHS 2 SD cards are obviously a lot pricier.

Thanks for any info!

The reshaping of the Cinema EOS line will continue into 2021, there is a Cinema EOS C90 in the pipeline [CR2]

With the announcement of the Canon Cinema EOS C70, we can see Canon has some new plans for the Cinema EOS line in pricing as well as form factor.
The next Cinema EOS camera to be announced will likely be the Canon Cinema EOS C50, and this camera will be a small “box” style camera.
I have now heard from multiple places that Canon has a Cinema EOS C90 in the pipeline for 2021. What this camera is or will bring is unknown at this point. I’m not even sure if it’ll be an RF mount camera.
So it looks like this will be the Cinema EOS lineup by the middle of next year:

Canon Cinema EOS C50
Canon Cinema EOS C70
Canon Cinema EOS C90
Canon Cinema EOS C200 (Will there be a Mark II version?)
Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark III
Canon Cinema EOS C500 Mark II
Canon Cinema EOS C700
Canon Cinema EOS C700 FF

I do know that Canon is actively working on making RF mounts for some of the older Cinema EOS cameras on...

Canon announces two new 250mp APS-H image sensors

Canon Japan has announced two new APS-H image sensors from Canon with 250mp of resolution. As Keith at Northlight points out, that’s a resolution of 388.7mp if they were full-frame sensors.
From Canon: (Google Translated)
As a new product of APS-H size (about 29.4 x 18.9 mm) CMOS sensor, Canon will release “LI8020SAC (color) / LI8020SAM (monochrome)” capable of imaging about 250 million pixels (19,568 x 12,588 pixels) in 2020. It will be released in late October of the year.

Main features

The new product is an ultra-high resolution CMOS sensor with approximately 250 million pixels, which enables you to capture detailed information in an image while shooting a wide range. In addition, by setting the pitch of one pixel to 1.5 μm (micrometer), we have achieved approximately 250 million pixels in APS-H size, making it possible to use it for various purposes. It can be used for various purposes such...

Do you need an RF portrait lens on a budget? Consider the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4

Are you in the market for a portrait lens for your Canon RF mount camera? Don’t have the budget for the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L or the pair of Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L lenses? Well, then the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 for the RF mount may be for you.
This Samyang has autofocus and weather sealing, as well as terrific image quality for the price. I have yet to find a bad review of the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 and actually ordered one myself.

Revisiting the Canon Cinema EOS C50 and what it could be

There is some renewed talk about the Canon Cinema EOS C50, as sleuths around the web try to put together previous information to make a prediction about what the Cinema EOS C50 is going to be.
With Panasonic announcing the Panasonic BGH1 4K cinema camera in box camera form factor, there is renewed interest in what the Canon Cinema EOS C50 will be.
There are now some suggestions that the Canon Cinema EOS C50 will too be a box camera. This I cannot confirm or deny at this time.
We have this patent from back in September of 2019 uncovered by Canon News showing a box camera with an RF mount...

The 5DayDeal Photography Bundle 2020 has launched!

It’s that time of the year again. The 5DayDeal Photography Bundle 2020 has launched. This is something I support every single year because I find a great deal of value in it. Even if you only learn one thing from all of the content provided, it’s more than worth it for the cost.
The other reason I support this bundle is because of the charity component. We’re going to raise a lot of money for various charities. You also get to choose which charity you’d like to support.
There are three different bundle options to choose from. 5DayDeal has done a great job of offering multiple bundles for different budgets and learning goals.
There is too much available in the three bundles to list here, but head on over to 5DayDeal and learn more.
There are some bonuses for folks that buy the bundle through Canon Rumors.

1 year of CR Pro (which will be set up at the end of the sale on Monday)...

Problems with AF on birds @ R5

Beautiful evening!

I need the help of experienced R5 users, please! My R5`s AF fails, when I want to shoot birds that are not format-filling. The AF always focusses on infinity and stays there, even if the selected AF field (spot AF, extended spot AF) is pointing sufficiently on the bird. The subject meets all needs on contrast and size to cover the whole AF-points. To solve this problem, I´ve to rearrange and point the AF field on much nearer object, then it focusses correctly in most cases.
But this is not satisfacting. These days I lost a lot of shots, when an kingfisher fetched fishes mnultiple times out of the water.

Any advide to solve this background fixation?
Thank you!

Patent: Quad pixel AF sensor

Canon News has uncovered another Quad Pixel Autofocus (QPAF) sensor patent.
Canon News breaks down why QPAF should be coming in the future.
Right now with dual pixel AF (DPAF) sensors, you can focus reliably while the camera is in the horizontal position and your edge of contrast that you are locking on are vertical.  If the edge is horizontal (or parallel to the camera orientation) then it has extreme difficulty in locking on.  This is because all the pixels are arranged in one direction for dual pixel AF.  What Canon needs is a quad pixel, where the pixel is split up, not once but twice, allowing for different phase different arrangements.
This patent application specifically deals with suppressing the deterioration that may happen with...
