Lens upgrade advice.

Tax free weekend is this weekend and I have a bunch of gift cards totaling $652.19 with my local camera shop. I shoot with a 6D and would like to upgrade a lens or two.

I currently own:
EF 17-40 f/4 L
EF 24-105 f/4 L IS
EF 40 f/2.8 Pancake
EF 85 f/1.8
EF 100 f/2.8 Macro USM
EF 70-200 f/2.8 L non-IS.

I shoot mainly classic cars, architecture, night photography, people and fine art.

I was thinking of buying the EF 24-70 f/2.8 L II and maybe 1 other lens. I don’t know if I should upgrade my 70-200 to the newer IS III version or my Macro to the IS version. Thoughts?

Matt Granger dumps Nikon

Posted today on YouTube: Matt Granger (formerly known as That Nikon Guy) is selling his Nikon Gear. The main reason, if I hear correctly, is substandard video performance. Interestingly he doesn't know yet which system he is switching to.

(For the record I switched TO Nikon F from Canon EOS one year ago and could not be happier, but I don't do video).

R5 Possessed? Rear LCD Flickers and Changes Menus on Its Own...

Hi,

I'm assuming this is not normal, but just wanted to see if someone else noticed this as well. I don't want to have to send the camera in for service, especially since the issue may not be reproducible by Canon. But I also know that if I did a return/exchange, it could be ages before I get a replacement camera from another store. Perhaps unsurprisingly, ignoring the issue does not seem to be a long-term solution.

Summary of issue:
On occasion (not all the time, not predictably), my rear LCD screen will start to flicker. The whole screen goes bright/dark very quickly for a period of time. Sometimes the camera also scrolls through all of the different menu pages, though I am not touching any buttons. It simply goes through the menu by itself on its own.

Is this something anyone else has seen after flipping the screen?

Is it possible a firmware update could fix this? Or do I definitely have a defective camera?
(The battery charger that came with the camera IS defective. It makes a high pitched noise when plugged in. Canon has sent a replacement which I have yet to receive.)

I really want to love this setup, but this issue has me a bit worried since the first 400mm DO II lens I got was DOA. Canon fixed it very fast, but these are my first two Canon purchases, and both were problematic. The RF 15-35mm and 24-70 lenses that I also got seem to work just fine, thankfully! I greatly enjoy the camera otherwise.

Canon EOS R5 firmware update coming in the next 24 hours

Update 2: The firmware coming shortly looks to be more about bug fixes than feature additions. Cinema RAW Light and CLog-2 and CLog-3 are not going to be in this update, but they are coming soon.
Perhaps the bugs have to be addressed before adding features.
Sorry folks, but this is the way things go sometimes.
Update: A source that is testing the new firmware has warned me not to expect too much of a difference in thermal performance with the new firmware. I guess we’ll know for sure quite soon.
The much talked about firmware update for the Canon EOS R5 appears to be coming tonight, I say “in the next 24 hours” because firmware updates don’t always roll out to all of the Canon sites globally.
I have been told that the firmware update will come at 3 AM CEST (Central European Summer Time) Thursday, August 27, 2020.
That would be today at 9 PM EDT and 6 PM PDT in North America.

Who of you are really impaired by the R5´s video limitations?

On the last two days, I tried the video-features of the R5. Filming my smallest great-granddaughter, who is an enthusiastic horsewoman, at riding and training her dog.
I saw just a few of these devastating reviews on Youtube, so my expectations were not high. All those professional influencers have to be right and I´m just an old pensioner who actually scrapes past an beginning dementia.
But - OMG - it worked. Yes, it worked great. We filmed over three hours in 4k, with an Zhiyun gimbal for special perspectives and hand-guided with my just arrived R5 smallrig camera cage. The videos look great, and the AF is tracking my great-granddaughter effectively, also their dogs and horses. The videos are all about 20-25 minutes long. No overheating, Noother problem.

Anybody eles out there, who has some positive first experiences with the R5 video capability?

It looks as though they've cracked unlimited 8k on the R5

From what I'm reading elsewhere if you write to SD card and format the card as Fat as opposed to Exfat the R5 is forced to save the video in 4gb chunks which is just under a minute's worth of video. you lose the last minute of recording but the rest is saved as it's a 'force save'.

Pull the battery and you get your 17 minutes back (apparently).

Whether this is actually a safe thing to do is another subject entirely. No doubt some bright spark will put the R5 through an endurance test of 24-hour continuous recording at 8k.

Is there a new crop sensor mirrorless body frm canon releasing soon ? Am looking at an alternate and upgraded version for 7d mark 2.

8K Cinema RAW Light coming to the EOS R5 confirmed by Apple?

A couple of weeks ago we reported about the coming firmware for the Canon EOS R5. We mentioned that Cinema RAW light was coming in that update, and it looks like Apple has confirmed it with the latest update for Final Cut Pro X.
From Apple:
This release also introduces significant performance improvements with new Metal-enabled plug-ins for RED RAW and Canon Cinema RAW Light. Transcoding 8K RED RAW video to ProRes 422 is up to two times faster on Mac Pro, and up to three times faster on MacBook Pro. And for the first time, Final Cut Pro editors can play and edit 8K Canon Cinema RAW Light.
There is no official date for the release of the new firmware, but I would expect it sometime in the next couple of months. I wouldn’t be surprised if Canon made an official announcement prior to the...

R5/R6 Camera defect reports (no hype or wish lists please)

Wanted to start a thread for legit R5/R6 camera issues or defects, not speculations or complaints/wish lists about the design. Please don't complain about video times or other design wishes here as there are a million threads and sites for that. I'm hoping we can collect actual potential manufacturing defects from people who own the camera in this thread. To start off those I am aware of:

1) I know one poster here cannot get the intervalometer to work no matter what he tried, and was going to send off for repair at Canon's suggestion. EDIT: apparently Ramage below has an answer, remapping focus button causes the issue, Canon is aware and will fix in firmware.

2) For my R5, I have gone night shooting and found several bright red stuck/hot pixels on the sensor that become evident when exposures are set for slow shutter >1s, ISO >800, apertures are F4 or larger. Combining multiple low light exposure settings make them brightest (high ISO + wide apertures + slowest shutters) but any one setting when cranked enough will produce them.

These hot pixels show on both EVF and LCD screen, so is definitely the sensor pixels. A few of them twinkle which is odd, perhaps high ISO NR and exposure preview working together. The stuck pixels do not make it into images, but I have not tested with high ISO NR off or made sure LR or photoshop isn't taking care of them.

For all Canon cameras, cleaning the sensor manually typically remaps or attempts to shut off stuck pixels upon power down, but failed to help at all here. Walked through it again with Canon Service rep just to be thorough, no joy. My R5 also has several lesser spots of dimmer red, green or blue pixels, perhaps 10 defects total.

Canon support has been great as usual, and is taking care of the problem with a warranty repair and shipping. I hear I should bne out of a camera for about a week, no biggie as I have a 5D4 and no jobs or hobby trips planned right now with the awful smoke in the area. Hopefully the next sensor is better- I can deal with a couple dim bad pixels but not so many bright ones, plus over time usually a sensor develops a couple more, so to start with several isn't great. For high MP sensors it is normal to have a few bad pixels eventually, but the two spots of several bright red pixels both myself and Canon agree is not normal for a new camera to have.

The Canon EOS R6 will begin shipping this week

We’ve been talking ad nauseam about the Canon EOS R5, that I almost forgot (not really!) about the Canon EOS R6, which is likely to sell more units than the EOS R5.
Numerous retailers have told us that they expect their first allotment of the Canon EOS R6 today or tomorrow and that the first cameras will ship out on August 27.
There is no word yet on the number of units available or where you may be on the preorder list.

Canon EOS R6 Body $2499
Canon EOS R6 w/24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM $2799
Canon EOS R6 w/24-105mm f/4L IS USM $3599

The-Digital-Picture hacks EF-RF adapter to make *all* EF lenses work with RF teleconverters

This is really, really interesting: https://www.the-digital-picture.com...=35054&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook

Turns out that with a little physical modification, you *can* use the RF teleconverter with an EF-RF adapter to increase the focal length of all EF lenses.

It's unfortunate that there had to be a drill involved to do this, but I'm sure a third party will release a different adapter soon that accepts teleconverters with this knowledge out there. This is super cool, I may buy one of the off-brand adapters, and put a drill to work to try this out.

Fun that the 24-70 turns into a 34-100mm F/4, wonder what other useful combinations there are? I think this would mostly be useful to add another 1.4 extender to any EF lenses you'd want, I'd like to see the RF 1.4 combined with the EF 1.4x for some easy extra reach.

Lensrentals.com: Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM Teardown

By Roger Cicala Published August 24, 2020
Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM at Lensrentals.com starting at $37 for a 7 day rental
Here I sit, the guy who gets poetic writing about tiny resolution differences in high-priced wide-aperture lenses, having just bought this lens. Its aperture is in the diffraction- softening range. The manufacturer’s (pronounced ‘better than reality’) MTF charts aren’t very good.
word-image-1.jpeg
600mm f/11 compared to 100-500mm f4.5-7.1 at 500mm, Canon.com
So why did I buy this pig? Because it could fit a need, of course. Despite the religious fervor with which some worship certain lenses and brands, despite my complaints about this lens’ astigmatism or that lens’ corners, it always comes down to...

EOS R5 External Charging

Hi

Has anyone tested the external charging of the EOS R5 yet? I'm particularly interested in using the camera for longer timelapses where I have to come up with a solution for extended power supply. I tested the USB power adapter with a powerbank already, but it didin't seem to work... Maybe because the voltage of the USB outlet is too low?
I also tried my dummie LP-6N batterie which was connected to a DC output that I use for my Mark IV and 6d, but the R5 only gave me an error message (Batterie Power too low, please change batterie)....

Has anyone made tests or came up with solutions so far?

Video lights for students project

One of my great-grandsons needs a studio light for an students project.
They have to lighten up an about 10 squaremeters large area for tutorials on medical practice. In the center there will be an patients bed, surrounded by 2-3 persons.
Daylight, respectively artificial room light is available too.

Filmed on my Eos R5 and 5DIV and A7RIV with external mics, parallel - to get another perspective. Cameras are stabilized by an gimbal and one is mounted on my slider. (Today it seems an appealing visual presentation with special effects and motion is just as important as good content :sneaky:)

Is it possible to lighten up such an big area with three video-lights?
And which product (no pro-gear (students!)) would you recommend?

Thanks a lot!

Fewer than 20 fps with Electronic Shutter?

Hey folks, I just graduated from a 5D4 up to the R5, so the silent high-speed Electronic Shutter is totally new to me... Is there any way to dial-back the blazingly fast 20 fps speed? It seems that no matter what Drive Mode I select (other than "Single Shot" of course) I'm still getting the maximum of ~ 20 shots per second. The chart on page 910 of the R5's manual seems to indicate that this is the only available continuous shooting speed, regardless of which continuous Drive Mode is selected. If this is correct, is there any particular reason for this limitation? I can think of many instances where I would prefer to have just 3 or 6 or 8 or 12 silent shots per second...
