Canon to introduce two 8K Cinema EOS cameras in 2021 [CR2]

Canon first teased an 8K Cinema EOS camera back in 2015 at the Canon EXPO, we’ve also seen some other sightings at various tradeshows over the years. Now that we have 8K capability in the Canon EOS R5, the next step for Canon will be to introduce a Cinema EOS camera with 8K capture.

I have been told that Canon will introduce not one, but two 8K Cinema EOS cameras in 2021. One of the cameras will be a flagship camera with “A camera” aspirations, likely in the form factor of the Canon Cinema EOS C700.

The second one I have been told will be a more modular camera in the same vein as the Cinema EOS C300 Mark III and Cinema EOS C500 Mark II. Where it exactly fits into the Cinema EOS ecosystem is unknown at this time.

I don’t expect an announcement until around the NAB 2021 timeframe, which usually...

EOS m Lenses 5 new to be announced this year ?

Hi all,
Watching a "tech gear talk" video on youtube and he mentioned he had heard about 5 new M lenses being announced this year.
Was wondering if anyone else had heard that ?
15mm toneh 2, 52mm toneh 2, 62 macro toneh 4, 18-45 toneh 2.8-4, 100-300 no toneh

I think the primes are well covered already by Canon and Sigma i would hope they might bring us some HQ zooms ?
10-18 toneh 2.8 , 18-50 toneh 2.8, 50-200 toneh 2.8
this would make "baby Jesus" trinity !

Anyone know anything about these, or thoughts on what you'd like.

Question for those with the R5 already...

I've always taken issue with the top LCD display on the first version of the EOS R in that I don't like the black background / white lettering. It's just way harder for me to see.

My question is, I've seen a few photos and videos around with it inverted back to a white background, with black lettering. Is this an option you can select so it's always like it as it's easier to see without illuminating it?

The Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM announcement draws closer

The Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM has appeared for Russian certification (SKU 4318C005A), which means we should get an official announcement soon. I expect to see the RF 50mm f/1.8 IS STM to be announced alongside it.
While we don’t have an exact announcement date, we may see them announced in a few weeks alongside the new RF mount Cinema cameras and other new gear.

CLog and Auto ISO, together at last on the R5

Has anyone else noticed that you can now run auto ISO with CLog enabled on the R5? That's a nice surprise coming from the EOS R. I kind of thought that maybe the washed out colors of CLog caused some kind of problem with metering and auto ISO, and I wasn't sure we'd ever get to use them together.

Also honestly I don't want to hear the arguments that the "real" cinema people don't use auto ISO. It's great for filming in changing and unpredictable environments.

Canon EOS R5 firmware update coming soon, RAW light to be added? [CR2]

I don’t think it comes as a surprise that Canon will be releasing firmware updates for the Canon EOS R5. I have been told that we will see an update “soon”, no date was given. As with most firmware updates, it’ll be released when it’s done.
The source claims the following will be added to the Canon EOS R5, but cautions it may not come all at once in a single firmware update.

Addition of Cinema RAW light option to 8K recording
Addition of CLog 3
Increased record time limits (but don’t expect a huge boost)
Various bug fixes

These additions may not be all that is coming, but the source claims these features are what’s coming first.

Ditching the 24-70 mm from holy trinity

Hello,
Just wandering - does it make any sense to ditch the RF 24-70 mm and just buy RF 15-35 mm, RF 70-200 mm and to wait for a RF 50 mm F/1.8 prime?
I like to hike, that's the reason for wide lens. RF 70-200 mm would be a face portait and for tourism. And the RF 50 mm would be for photos of my girlfriend during holidays or evening walks.
I'm thinking about combining those lenses with R6 as my advance amature kit.
What are your opinions?

Teardown: The Canon EOS R5 gets an autopsy

Here we have our first teardown of the Canon EOS R5, and it will give you some idea in how Canon has chosen to control heat. There are a few design choices that I find interesting.

The thermal pads on the CPU don’t cover the full CPU
Aluminum was used instead of copper, though there is added cost and complexity of working with copper.
There is definitely no venting for heat to escape
Is there an issue with the CFExpress slot being so close to the processor?

As pointed out by EOSHD,  why does not of this matter when recording externally? I and others think it’s probably some kind of software limit.

EOS R5: NR always applied in raw files under ISO 640..

One of the first things I looked for after the R5 release was results on photonstophotos - e.g. https://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Canon EOS R5

What does that mean? Bill Claff has posted his findings on dpreview:

Summary: With NR turned off (in any user accessible settings), the camera still applies it if ISO is less than 640. From the dpreview thread, Bill estimates the benefit is about 2/3 of a stop.

I can see why Canon might do this from a marketing perspective but if you are a stills shooter, is Canon being honest here? Do stills shooters care about this? Not if your ISO is over 640 but...

R1 Camera

Does anyone have an other rumors about a 1D mirrorless equivalent? There was an old rumor about 1Q of 2021 announcement but I've not heard anything else. With the Olympics post-poned to 2021, does this seem like a possibility?

Yes I realize that the R5 and R6 have just come out. Anything more about the high MP camera?

Had the chance to use the R5 for astrophotography

I used my new R5 for some astrophotography this past week. I'm pretty happy with the results. Even pushing the shadows pretty hard at ISO 1600, the foreground detail held up fairly well. Here is a sample image for anyone considering the R5 for astro work. Please note that I don't consider myself to be a pro at editing astro photos. This was just done with some quick basic edits and noise reduction in Adobe Camera Raw.

Taken with a Rokinon 14mm f2.8, 35 seconds, ISO 1600

And the original, no edits, for comparison.

And I know people want to pixel peep, so here's a 1:1 crop of the foreground detail in the first photo. This has some noise reduction applied. It's not perfect by any means, but I'm fairly happy with it, especially being that it's in the corner of the photo. Also keep in mind that this is a 45mp photo, so looking at 1:1 crops is looking a lot closer than what 1:1 would be from a 5D4 or EOS R.

USB-C data speeds for reading CF Express from R5 over USB?

Does anyone know if the USB C port on the R5 supports full USB 3.1 gen 1 (5gb/s) or gen 2 (10gb/s)? I planned ahead and bought my RF lenses, EF-RF adapter, and CF Express card a while ago, but didn't get a CF Express reader and the only ones I can find have terrible reviews. It looks like I'm either going to have to buy the Sandisk CF Reader that my local shop has in stock, but reviews say you have to manually hold the card in place to get it to work, or I'm gonna have to read files from the camera over USB.
