R6 IBIS "six seconds"?

Wow. How about some more good news? This is a short review, but with some sample images. I wonder how the IBIS does with the rf 50 and 85mm? Not just specs, but real world. Looks exciting!

R5s/R3 High-res Body Wish List (in Light of R5/6)

Now that we've seen the R5/6, how does this change what you expect from the high-res R?

Here's what I'd like to see:

Resolution:
+80mp; downsampling mode that does what the 4K HQ mode does on the R5: higher DR, lower noise, and 100% use of each RBG color channel.

Body:
Larger than R5/6; same 5DsR top dial/controls (no mode wheel); large internal heat sinks.

Video:
"Stills Only" option in the menu that makes all the video items disappear, not just get grayed-out; can be tied to C1/2/3 settings.
1080/120 that is sharp; 4K/30 full sensor; 4K 60 crop; no recording time limits; much longer thermal limit lockouts due to larger heat sinks and larger body size.

AA filter:
No AA filter, not even a good one; or do two models again: R5s (AA) and R5sR (AA-cancelling); or design it so it they all ship with the AA-cancelling filter, but make the cancelling filter removable for a service fee.

Dynamic Range:
Current R5 level is good; improve the current handheld-compatible HDR multi-shot mode by having the option to record the HDR file to RAW instead of only to JPEG (I don't mind if there is a several-second wait while it processes the RAW).

ISO:
Maintain R5 performance if possible, at least when downsized to 45mp.

Storage:
Dual SD UHS-II + CFexpress Type A card slots (like the A7sIII) – video can dual-record to both cards in any mode.

FPS:
12fps mechanical/electronic with no rolling shutter

R5 Timelapse Interval Timer Not Working

The built in interval timer on my R5 does not work. It lets me set everything up and then I take the first shot to start the timelapse and it shows the timer is active, and the lcd screen flashes like it's taking pictures on the intervals set, but it's not. I have emailed canon support to see what they say. I've tried multiple lenses, settings, etc, but nothing's working. The timelapse movie mode works fine. I was thinking about making a YouTube video about it to see if anyone else has this problem too, but it's so new, and so few people are interested in shooting timelapses, that I figured I'd wait to at least hear what canon support has to say. Also figured I'd check here to see if anyone else who has theirs had noticed this problem too, or at least just give everyone here a heads up on my findings.

DPReview: Canon EOS R5 and R6 overheating claims tested: cameras work as promised – but that’s not enough

DPReview has completed their own testing of the various video record times for both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6.
As we’ve seen, the cameras do record to Canon’s claims, but with the same huge caveat. You only get these times from a completely cooled camera. So that means the times change when you use LiveView, shoot stills, or shoot any shorter length of video, doing that over and over will eventually lead to overheating. The EOS R5 took about an hour in the DPReview test to get back to normal temperature. The surprising thing DPReview found, is that the EOS R6 will generally record longer, but it takes longer to cool down.
DPReview gives a few suggestions for maximizing your recording time with both the

R5 Software Issue?

I've had my R5 freeze twice since I received it. Yesterday it occurred while I was shooting several shots in high speed mechanical shutter mode to the SD II card (was not hot). All I had to do was turn the camera off then immediately back on to solve the problem. Today about 5 min after I started using it, the same thing again occurred under the same conditions, but this time I had to take the battery out to get the camera to resume operation. I know others have mentioned their camera has frozen. How often is this occurring to others? I'm still waiting for my CF Express reader to come to be able to use that card so I don't know if it's related to the SD card. Will try a different SD card.

R5 banding (or lack thereof) when using electronic shutter

After some early indications that the banding that plagued the R when using the electronic shutter under artificial lighting was much better with the R5, I decided to try to forego the mechanical shutter entirely and just use the electronic shutter.

Well, it seems that the R5 might have some barely noticeable banding under some artificial light sources with the electronic shutter. The banding I saw was really only noticeable if you took multiple photos of the same thing and then scrolled through them in the playback view. You can see a very slight brightness difference in part of the photos from one photo to the next. The banding seems to be very very wide, like think half the frame wide. So it's not so much banding as much as it is part of the photo is just slightly brighter than the other part. And the actual amount of difference between the light and dark parts of the "banding" is very minor. The reason I'm describing it instead of posting an example is that I can't really point out any area of the photo that actually shows the banding. So, overall this is pretty promising.

I'm interested to hear others' experiences with using the electronic shutter under artificial lights.

Whatever happened to the RF 35mm f1.2L?

CR once mentioned that it was one of the updated RF lenses to be released this year, but so far nothing and I've seen no additional rumors about it either.

I'm still rocking the EF 35mm f1.4L MkII which has been phenomenal, but would love to upgrade to the RF version. Seems like it would be a straightforward no-brainer for Canon? Not sure why the 800mm f11 IS was a more pressing release!

DPReview: Review of the Canon EOS R5

Chris and Jordan at DPReview have completed their review of the Canon EOS R5. As normal, Chris reviews the still sides of the camera, and Jordan handles the video side of things.
This is a tale of two cameras it appears.
For stills, Chris thinks the EOS R5 will become one of his favorite cameras. Great image quality, terrific autofocus, and handling the handling of the camera is what you’d expect from Canon. There were no heat issues when shooting stills only, but yes, there is an effect on the higher-quality record times after shooting photos.
For video, Jordan loves the quality of the video files, especially the 4KHQ mode. In Jordan’s testing of the overheating, he found the record run times in a controlled environment are pretty much where Canon says they are. The problem, that he and everyone has, is the...

R5: Where can I report software bugs?

Hi Guys -

My full report on R5 vs. 1DX3 (and 5D4) to come for our bird shooters but until then...

Where can I report software bugs?
The default write card seems to switch every time I take the card(s) out.

I select the CFExpress to be first to write to and it keeps defaulting to the SD card, as pictured below. I want to keep both cards in the camera for overflow, but this has been pretty annoying. Ha ha!

Anyone experience this? I want to report it somehow since Canon FW updates are far and few in between. Thanks!

Best computer for editing R5 video

From the tests I have seen, there doesn't seem to be an affordable (or even expensive) computer that can handle the highest quality modes of R5 video for editing.

Apparently the latest iPad pro has a new generation processor that can handle the files better than a desktop machine?

When will these new generation of processors be available in a desktop system?

How is everyone else planning to spec their machines for R5 video editing duties?

Which adapter?

Since I'm confident I'll get RF body soon-ish, and sounds like the EF-RF adapters are sold out due to R5 popularity.

So I thought maybe I should already buy one. There's several options though, which one should I buy?

Basic one for $99
With ring $199
Filter w/ CPL $299
Filter w/ variable ND $399

I'm kinda thinking about the ring version. But is it really useful? Or would the filter versions be better future proofing?

POSSIBLE "NEW" R5 PROBLEM FOUND?

so i got my R5 from B&H thur by 1030am here in nyc/nj area it was in packed up well no signs of damage or being used or etc
so today saturday from 4pm too 6pm i was out testing the SERVO AF at bk bridge park here in nyc on street bball
camera worked great no problems or etc yet here's the strange part
I FEEL/HEAR SOMETHING SHAKING OR MOVING IN THE CAMERA WITH AND WITHOUT THE BATTERY IN IT AND ONLY THE CPS STRAP ON IT MAKING NOISES
(camera wasnt NEVER WAS dropped or banged since i got only sitting on my laptop desk and only out too test it with my ADAPTOR with my old 24-70 and 50mm stm lens
again the camera works correctly yet i feel shaking or slight movement inside of it i rate it on a scale 3.5 out of 10 (u can feel a slight shake or something inside moving) is it the IBIS?
or shutter mechanism or etc? I HAVE EMAILED CANON AND B&H (would i have too send it in or will that exchange it for me?
and im waiting too see what they say DID I GET LEMON HAS ANYBODY NOTICED THERE UNIT FEELING AND HEARING SOMETHING MOVING INSIDE? please try for yourselves if possible and let me know

Notes actual use of the 600mm f/11 and the 800mm f/11

I've had a couple days with the 600, and only a few minutes with the 800, but here are some observations:

1) They do actually make sense. I was a little skeptical, but having used them, I'm quite taken by them. I just came back from a 4-hour walk with kids, dog, wife in the woods, and I never would have taken a 600 with me. It was light and easier to use than I anticipated. I got the motion down for extending the barrel, and then things just got easy. It's as handleable as my wife's Sigma 100-400. I wore it on a hip holster attached to an R5, and it was never too bulky that it caused any issues.
2) The image quality in good light is strikingly good. It is likely on par with the bare 400 f/5.6 L in terms of quality. But if you were to take a 2x teleconverter and stick it on the 500 f/5.6, you'd also find yourself with an 800 f/11, but it would be very far behind the quality of the actual 800mm f/11 DO. In other words, you get the 800 focal length, but the 400 equivalent quality.
3) Only the center third of the viewfinder is active for autofocus, and that makes shooting moving targets harder. The tracking is just as good on it as with the other lenses, though. I think this is the biggest downside to the lens. See note below, though, for a counter-point....*
4) Putting a 1.4x RF teleconverter on the 600 f/11 (makes it f/16 840mm) works beautifully. Was very surprised how well this kept up with AF and tracking.
5) In bad light, the f/11 is mostly working well, as the R5's low light performance is at least a stop better than my R or my old 5d4. It's like f/11 is the new f/8.
6) It's very weird not to have aperture control. You get used to it, but it's weird. The lens is at the fixed aperture.
7) As a cheap DO lens, I expected bokeh to be fair to poor. It's actually pretty nice. See image below with a quite busy background.
8) I'd convinced myself they came with hoods. They don't. Ugh.
9) I received the 800 f/11 only this afternoon after the big walk. Shot some stuff outside just for kicks. I suspect this has higher image quality than the 600. The IQ/price ratio is something quite new.
10) Minimum focus distance isn't terrible, like the 800mm f/5.6, but it's not useful for small stuff. 0.14x reproduction ratio.

Will be adding to this post via editing, so stay tuned.

* I was doing some direct comparisons between the 600 f/4 II with 1.4x tc versus the 600mm f/11 DO with 1.4 tc, and I found myself hearing a crashing noise in the brush behind me. A fawn was running down the hill on the game path on which I was standing. It was clueless that I was there, facing the same direction it was facing, just ahead of it. I wanted to haul the 600 f/4 around slowly to try to capture this, but I knew it would never work. I'd have to dismount it form the tripod and swing this tree-branch-sized lens around. Instead, I raised the 600 f/11 up on the other R5 and snapped 3 pictures immediately. It was a stark lesson in the utility of a smaller lens with wildlife shooting.

Here's that fawn with the 600mm f/11 quickdraw shot at f/16 due to the 1.4 RF teleconverter with effective focal length of 840mm. Any closer, nothing would be in focus.

R5 Video Button

I shoot very little video, but on the R the video button would use the C3 Custom Shooting settings. I thought I'd be able to set up my new R5 the same way, but when I tried it, C3 is now a photo setup. Does anyone know how to set the parameters used by the video button on the R5? I just want to be able to press one button and know that my basic settings are going to work. Thanks in advance!

Are we still getting an EOS R Mk II in 2020?

Are we still getting an EOS R Mk II or is Canon just going to release a higher resolution EOS R6 in the future? I watched a couple R6 video reviews- the lower megapixel count and soft 1080p 120 fps video are disappointing, yet I'm not sure I want to spend more for the R5. An EOS R Mk II slotting between the R5 and R6 would make a lot of sense.

Would love to get a 30MP RII with no 8k, 4k 120/60/30/24 with no crop, IBIS, 12 fps shooting, which seems to fit in with CR's RII rumor in January.

Gerald Undone completes exhaustive record time testing on the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6

Gerald Undone, one of the premier camera tech YouTubers has completed an exhaustive record time test on the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6.
He hopes to have the full video up on Monday or Tuesday for your viewing pleasure, but for now, he has provided us with a handy chart detailing his methodology, record times in all modes both internally and externally.
All of these tests were done indoors in a climate-controlled environment.
As for recovery time, Gerald has this to say:
It should also be noted that these times are from a 2 hour cooldown period. You will only get these durations once, then they’re significantly cut down. Takes about 1 hour for 60% recovery and 2 hours for full recovery.

It...
