Production of the Canon EOS 5DS and Canon EOS 5DS R has ended

I have been told a couple of times now and reminded today that production of the Canon EOS 5DS and Canon EOS 5DS R has ended. There will obviously be stock available for quite some time, but the series has definitely reached its end. There will be no DSLR replacement for either camera.
Let the rumors of a high-megapixel Canon EOS R commence.
More to come…

Nikon has to postpone D6 because of Corona virus

I just read in the German news magazine "Spiegel" that Nikon has to postpone the D6 market introduction because of the Corona virus. They have trouble with their supply chain but they'l strive to release it right before Olympic Games (too important for Nikon, of course). Interesting to see if and how Canon will be affected by this crisis, in particular the introduction of the R5.

Is a 150mp Canon EOS R camera on the way? [CR1]

It is being reported that a possible high-megapixel EOS R body from Canon may come with a 150mp sensor.
I don’t think the idea of a 150mp sensor in a consumer product from Canon is too far-fetched. While I think it’s more likely we’ll see something around 100mp, I would welcome any crazy amount of megapixels.
The Canon EOS R6 will be 20mp, the Canon EOS R5 will be 45mp, an Canon EOS R3 at 150mp? Sure, why not?
Maybe it’ll shoot 16k? (joking)
This is a third-party rumor, I haven’t heard anything about this from my sources. So please take it with a grain of salt.

Reports of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III going to sleep/locking up briefly

There are a few reports of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III going to “sleep” briefly after taking a few shots with the camera. The autofocus points and camera information disappear from the viewfinder and the camera becomes unresponsive for a short time.
There have been a few reports of this as you can see throughout this DPReview thread.
There are also other reports of the camera going into sensor cleaning mode out of the blue and restarting.
Canon Rumors reader Hamilton sent us a video of the issue that you can watch above.
I expect that Canon will address these concerns very quickly.

RF85 f1.4L IS USM?

As a portrait photographer one of the best lenses Canon has produced is the EF85 f1.4L IS USM. It focuses so much better than the old 1.2L lens and still gives very good bokeh.

My three "go to lenses" in this field are the EF24-70mm f2.8L USM II and the EF70-200mm f2.8L IS USM II along with the 85mm. Canon has answered the two zooms but not this particular 85mm (the f1.2L version is way too expensive for me).

Patent: Canon universal battery grip

Keith over at Northlight Images has uncovered a Canon USA patent showing what appears to be a “universal” battery grip for Canon cameras.
It looks like the battery grip itself can use various “adapters” to fit on various camera bodies. There is also gearing that allows you to move the position of the tripod screw.
You can see in the images below two different camera bodies illustrated and how the adapter could work between the camera and the battery grip.

I think this would definitely be a welcomed advance in battery grip design for consumers.

Patent: Canon RF 40mm f/1.8 & Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 optical formulas

A patent showing two optical formulas for some Canon RF primes has been uncovered by Canon News.
Canon RF 40mm f/1.8

Focal Length: 41.92mm
F-Number: 1.85
Angle of View: 27.30°
Image Height: 21.64mm
Lens length: 71.50mm
BF: 13.97mm

Canon RF 35mm f/1.8

Focal length: 36.00mm
F-number: 1.85
Angle of view: 31.00mm
Image height: 21.64mm
Lens length: 79.97mm
BF: 11.65mm

I’m expecting non-L RF mount prime lenses to be coming in the relatively near future, and this patent may be part of a series of Non-L prime lenses coming to the EOS R system
The patent does show a DSLR for the illustrations, but the backfocus length of these optical formulas shoes these designs are definitely for the RF mount.

How is EF lens AF performance on R bodies?

Really thinking of buying the R5 when it launches.
I have a bunch of EF glass that i am very happy with and not too keen on replacing (from a financial point of view) so i was wondering how EF lens AF performance is on the R bodies?

I currently have a 5dIV, a Sony A7R3 and a Sony A9. The Sonys have the Sigma MC11 adapter.

The A7R3 is ok on AF, just fine up to 100ish mm focal length but virtually useless with my Canon 300 F2.8
The A9 is noticeably better and can handle Canon 70-200 F2.8 just fine but also struggles with the 300 (though it actually can land focus with it unlike the A7R3)
The 5dIV is obviously better with all the EF glass than the Sony cameras.

Since i would need to use an adapter with the R camera i am worried about the AF performance. I have read that since the camera, adapter and lens are all from Canon it would be native AF performance but i can't find any facts backing this up. Surely with an adapter between the lens and the camera there is a tiny performance loss?

Canon Laser Printer

I decided that my two 20 year old Xerox laser printers were going to die soon, so I shopped for a new printer. I saw good reviews for a Canon Color Image Class MF743 so I decided to replace one of my printers with that one. I went to my employee discount store and it was $246, a bargain price. I ordered it and it arrived yesterday with a cracked scanner glass.

So, since I had bought it directly from Canon thru their employee discount store, I called them (30 min on hold), thinking someone could come out and repair it, or a local repair place could put in new glass. No, they wanted me to repack and ship the 70 pound monster back, and when they received it, I was supposed to call and let them know they had it so they could replace it. I had checked to see if I could just buy another and return it, but the sale was over, and the price backup to about $500 with my 10% discount.

So, I reluctantly agreed to send it back and wait 2 weeks for a replacement. Normally they said a refurb would be sent, but they would send me a new one. So, I spent 40 minutes getting it packed back up with all the accessories and marked it with the RMA number. However, I did not receive a return shipping label as promised. Later, UPS came by, but with no label, they could not pick it up. As of this morning, I still have no label and I was planning to rive to Spokane this morning and could drop it off.

They did say it might take 24 or more hours to get the label, but its getting towards that. The whole experience has not been a good one. I could also have bought it from Amazon for a extra $60, but they would have sent someone out to pick it up, and shipped a replacement as soon as it was picked up.

Since its basically less than today's Amazon price of $530, I'll just wait. I wheeled my Xerox back to its customary place.

I did try the canon printer, being over 20 years newer, I expected speed improvements, and its about 10% faster. Prints were very good, but not noticably better. I can get OEM toners for that old Xerox for $10 ea while ones for the new printer are $250 and only a couple of places sell 3rd party ones for $25 each. You have to move the Canon chip to them each time. They are 6,000 sheets rather than 8,000 like my Xerox. I'm beginning to woder about the whole deal, but I wanted a new printer. I also need to buy a 500 sheet add-on tray for $200. My Xerox has 3 trays holding 500 sheets.

Here are more images of the Canon EOS R5

The Canon EOS R5 is probably the most anticipated camera on earth at the moment, but it has only been teased by Canon with a development announcement. We do expect the Canon EOS R5 to be officially announced at some point in the next month or so.
Here are the rumoured specifications for the Canon EOS R5.

Congratulations to Lensrentals.com for shipping their one millionth order

After 13 short years, Lensrentals.com is celebrating its one-millionth order shipped. Congratulations to Roger and everyone at Lensrentals.com for your continued success.
I have been to the Lensrentals.com facility numerous times at various different locations and I’ve seen first hand their amazing growth.
I owned Lens Rentals Canada for a number of years and we tried to model ourselves after Lensrentals.com, Roger was always supportive of us and gave us amazing advice, as he had already lived through the mistakes and headaches and helped us avoid them. Unfortunately, the logistics in Canada are far more difficult than in the United States and we decided to shut down.
If you have never tried out Lensrentals.com, give it a go, you won’t be disappointed.

Coronavirus and Canon production

UPDATE: Canon to close five plants for nearly two weeks this month.
Canon said on February 28 that it will suspend operations at its five offices in Kyushu, which produce cameras and related products, for about two weeks from March 2 to 13. The supply of parts from China may become unstable due to the effects of the new coronavirus. The operation date will be re-assigned to a different date within the year, but details will be finalized in the future. The company hopes to maintain production efficiency by operating when parts supply is stable.
The target is a total of five manufacturing subsidiaries in Oita, Miyazaki and Nagasaki. The company produces SLR cameras, interchangeable lenses, network cameras (surveillance cameras), etc. At the moment, no employees have been infected. [Via Nikkei]

File naming standards for DSLR and How to ID your backup Camera

Hey gang, needing some advice. I have a 7D2 that I had for several years. I set my File name prefix to my INIT's plus a # Example RB0. that way Since its hard to try and Identify the # of shots taken in a life time I increase the # after the shutter resets after 9999.
Now I just picked up a 2nd 7D2 and I want to some something simular.

My question for those that have Multiple Camera Models or Not How to you preset your 3 char file name?

Also having TWo identical model camera How do folks Label there Camera's?

R5 and 100-500 pics from WPPI

DPR has some pics up:

R5 looks good with a nice deep grip for larger lenses. 100-500 somewhat larger than the 100-400 though, seemingly noticeably fatter as well as longer
