An international team of security researchers has drawn our attention to a vulnerability related to communications via the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP), which is used by Canon digital cameras, as well as a vulnerability related to firmware updates.
(CVE-ID:CVE-2019-5994, CVE-2019-5995, CVE-2019-5998, CVE-2019-5999, CVE-2019-6000, CVE-2019-6001）
Due to these vulnerabilities, the potential exists for a third-party attack on the camera if the camera is connected to a PC or mobile device that has been hijacked through an unsecured network.
At this point, there have been no confirmed cases of these vulnerabilities being exploited to cause harm, but in order to ensure that our customers can use our products securely, we would like to inform you of the following workarounds for this issue.

Ensure the suitability of security-related settings of the devices connected to the camera, such as the PC, mobile device, and router being used.

Looking for something the pic included, its on amazon WITH the canon 600 but I can't find it separately. The selens ones are rubber and too expensive, but I got 2 of these plastic ones about 2 years ago on either ebay or alixpress and now they are impossible to find. Shouldn't cost more than $15. Thanks in advance if anyone can send me link where to get. And it doesn't have to be screw in, I don't mind the slip on version.

We have been told that Canon is working on a new firmware version for the Canon EOS R. One of the things beings worked on is improved eye AF performance, most notably on subjects at a distance.
Outside of that, what else is in the next EOS R firmware version is unknown. There should be the obvious bug fixes, but don’t hold your breath for new significant features.

As I understand it, the XC10 will output 10-bit from its HDMI. I read canon xc10 specs but want to hear your mind. Has anyone compared internal 8-bit to external 10-bit recording?

We’ve been reporting for quite some time that the Canon EOS 90D and Canon EOS M6 Mark II would be announced on or around August 28, 2019. Nokishita further confirms these reports.

We’ve been told that some “crazy” lenses were coming to the RF mount, and here’s a patent uncovered by Northlight that fits the bill.
Canon appears to be working on a fast portrait zoom for the RF mount, with the fastest of the bunch being an RF 50-80mm f/1.1. The number of lens elements in the lens design is remarkable.
Canon RF 50-80mm f/1.1:

Focal length: 51.50mm 64.17mm 82.52mm
F-number: 1.13 1.13 1.13
Half angle of view: 22.79° – 18.63° – 14.69°

Also included in this patent are optical formulas for a RF 50-80mm f/1.2, RF 50-80mm f/1.4, RF 50-80mm f/1.6 and a RF 50-80mm f/1.8.
We expect some new lens designs to be announced in the first half of 2020. Keep in mind, just because there’s a patent, doesn’t mean we’ll actually see this as a product.

Both Nikon and Canon made ill-fated decisions to focus on the mirrorless system. They were failures with a lot of technical problems in both bodies and lenses. They stopped to sell Nikon and Canon DSLR along with both F and EF lenses. They want to channel their money into the mirrorless system development. They lost a lot of money and laid off so many innocent employees into the street. Thousands of professional photographers were not happy toward both Nikon and Canon included myself which I stopped buy new products for my work.

Both Canon and Nikon are in deep financial trouble and may lead end of the business by the bankrupt. This due to flipped by upper management people included CEO.

The mirrorless camera system was never a reliable hardware design. Error in hardware caused a lot of trouble-prone. The engineers decided to design new models instead of correct hardware design with current cameras and lenses. I do not know if they can resolve the entire situation, I hate to say, it seems to me it was DONE.

We recently reported that 2 of the three lenses for the RF mount “holy trinity” would be coming in September, and it looks like Nokishita is reporting the same thing.
Both the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS & RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS have been added to the official product list from Canon and you can expect preordering to start within the next 3-4 weeks.
As previously mentioned, the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS is scheduled to come in December of this year to complete the trinity.

Corrects a PTP communications vulnerability.

I just upgraded from the G7X mark 2 to the mark 3. I really like the grid and electronic level turned on, but I can't figure out how to turn it on on the Mark 3. On the older one you just hit the down button on the menu ring.

Also the fact that there are no manuals online for the Mark 3 yet doesn't help.

Anyone have a Mark 3 yet who can answer this?

Is Canon preparing to return a feature from the days of the EOS-3? The feature being eye-controlled autofocus.
A patent uncovered by Canon News shows us that Canon is working on the technology for eye-controlled autofocus for mirrorless cameras. Eye-controlled autofocus uses your eye to select the autofocus point, so no joystick or touchscreen interaction is required to move the autofocus point around.

I have all my EF gear on ebay right now. I sold the 24-70 in about two hours with no problem The problem is going to be the 5D Mark III. Everybody wants the shutter count... which is kind of silly for me to consider going through the ordeal of figuring out. I'm pretty sure the count is pretty low, but considering the condition (very good) I would not have thought that to be a problem. Canon will do it, but for $150. Other websites will do it, but many of them are notorious for inaccurate counts. Some are even known to have malware attached. So if I send the camera to Canon, that is -$150, then the ebay fees come up (high) I would just about have to give the camera away. Frustrating. I don't want to use a site other than Canon and then a buyer try to double check using a guesstimate website and start a row with paypal/e-bay. The lenses will sell just fine. No problem. Should I just wait for a buyer that is savvy enough to understand? One buyer wanted to knock $300 off my $999 price just because I don't have a shutter count listed. I don't want to lie. Many sellers just give a count, but I don't see any paperwork displayed proving what they have. Any ideas?

A patent showing continued development in EF mount optical formulas has appeared at the Japan Patent Office this past week.
This patent covers two optical formulas, one being an EF 20mm f/1.4 and the other being an EF 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6.
I don’t feel either of these optical formulas will become new products and this is more about the development of lens technologies than the optical formulas themselves.

We were sent a strange rumor this week, one we figured was a typo. “Canon will announce the EOS Joey in August”. So I took to Twitter to figure out what sort of autocorrect error would come up with “Joey”, and someone came up with “Kiss”, which is what Rebel’s are called on certain areas of the planet.
Which Rebel is due for replacement? We think the EOS Rebel T7i/800D/Kiss X9i is a little long in the tooth, as it was announced back in February of 2017.
There are no specifications at this time, but the bigger leaks are likely coming over the next week or two.
As pointed out on our forum, it’s possible that it could also mean a new entry-level EOS M camera is coming, as the EOS M50 also received the “Kiss” designation.

Dear Canon,

You continue to make great gear, but while I've been enjoying to use Canon cameras and lenses for years, there's something I do not understand:
Do we all need (and want) big fat heavy fast lenses?
Do we all need (and prefer) to shoot wide open?
What about the many landscape photographers and travellers - don't we earn the same attention, wouldn't we appreciate and enjoy small and lightweight L-primes as well as our portrait, wedding and astro photographer friends do with their big primes?

''We have first class zooms'', you may say, ''which offer many focals lenghts in one lens and maybe even less weight than with a couple of prime lenses.''
Right... but you know better than me the advantages of primes over zooms – or why does anyone make and use primes at all? Do you want to tell me that I can only choose between zooms and older EF non-L primes, if I don't want to carry bricks in my backpack?

''But then we can make these lenses not faster than f4 or even f5.6'' , you may say, and maybe you're right again.
Well... does this really matter to landscape photographers who more than often stop down to f8 anyway?
You can taylor lenses to perform best at f1.4 or so. Can't you taylor small primes for optimum performace at f11 or even f16? Ok, optimize them for f8 and give us sensor based focus stacking instead. With IBIS, we even wouldn't need in-lens IS, and the majority of landscape photographers that I know and meet use tripods anyway.

Hey Canon, you make ''Look-what-we-can-do'' lenses with incredible performance and we are really deeply impressed.
I know, physics are limiting things now and then, and I'm not an expert in this regard, but do ''Look-what-we-can-do'' lenses automatically need to be big and heavy?
Well, you're in good company with other lens makers in this regard, but show us what YOU can do by giving us a series of small L quality primes, from 12mm to 135mm or so.
Make them small, make them light, make them L, make them perfect.

I think you will make more money, because you will have more custumers: those who don't want to carry or who can't afford the heavy beasts.

Last but not least, don't tell me this would be impossible. 50 years ago, men flew to the moon.

I currently have a 7D Mark II, and I'm thinking about switching to a mirrorless system because of the size - I mainly use my camera for travel photography, and the 7DII is a bit of a monster that takes up a lot of space and weight when I travel.

I was wondering if anyone here has made the switch and can share their experience? Having used a camera like the 7DII, did you opt for the Canon M or R system? Was there anything you missed about the DSLR when you switched? How does the image quality compare?

Since mine has a crop sensor, I think switching to a crop system is probably a good idea because of my lenses, but I'm actually looking to buy new lenses as well. I only ever use my Sigma 17-70 / 2.8-4.5 lens, but I think it's a bit broken because sometimes it doesn't focus anymore. The only other lens I occasionally use is a Canon 50 / 1.4 lens. As far as I can tell, there aren't a lot of lenses for mirrorless cameras on the market yet, which is the only thing that's keeping me waiting for now...

Could Canon be building an f/1.2 set of prime lenses for the RF mount? So far we have the stellar duo of the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM and the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM. According to the latest information we have received, more f/1.2L prime lenses are coming.
First up will be an RF 35mm f/1.2L USM, and we’re told that it is scheduled for release in 2020, though an announcement date isn’t known at this time.
The same source says an RF 24mm f/1.2L USM is also possible, but it isn’t currently on the product roadmap for 2020.
