Since the announcement of the Canon EOS R last year, there have been unrelenting questions about what a true next-generation professional mirrorless camera from Canon was coming.
We’re told that there are two bodies planned that will be marketed as “professional” bodies when they hit the market in 2020. However, neither one of them will be considered equals or a replacement for the EOS-1D series of DSLRs. We’re going to see an EOS-1D X Mark III next year and that will be the flagship camera from Canon through 2020.
The obvious first EOS R series camera will be the high-resolution body we’ve been talking about for months.
The other will be a “sports” oriented camera, with higher frame rates, lower resolution and some advancements in sensor performance. This camera will be designed for prosumer shooters as well as an ideal 2nd body to “professional” photographers that may be using the EOS-1D series of DSLRs. So it almost sounds like a mirrorless full-frame EOS 7D body.

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM development was announced back in February along with 5 other lenses, including a second 85mm f/1.2L lens with defocus smoothing, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS USM.
We expect the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM to be officially announced on or around May 9, 2019, and it will be available for preorder on that day.

I run a semi-professional career as a child photographer for the business of my wife (www(dot)pickapooh[dot]de)

All the pictures you see there are mine.

I do work with a 5D4 since it came out, and after swapping from the 5D3 I seem to miss focus a little too often for my liking.

I use the center AF point in spot mode only, BB focussing, manual exposure and AF servo almost exclusively.

Keeping track of the little ones is no easy task and I believe I can tell user error from "funny behavior".

In a total static subject there is a couple of soft images interlaced with razor sharp ones.

My current assumption is, that AF servo needs a minimum change in subject distance to re-focus while on target.
If I defocus and re-focus, it seems to become better, but that should not be the point.

I have given up on wide open apertures but even with 5,6 to 8 there is more than the occasional loss of critically sharp images.

Any ideas, what might explain the behaviour?
Gear is AMFDed and I consider to send it to recalibration after this round.

Hi good people!

I recently bought a 135 L to use with my R.

But I get seriously disappointing results regarding Servo AF. My RF50 can’t miss, and the 135 can’t hit.

It’s okay, but only okay, in One Shot and in servo I get a 2 out of 15 shots sharp, the rest is so OOF you can’t tell who I took a picture of.

Anyone has used this combo and like to chime in with your experience?

I currently shoot with 5Diii and 5D (Classic). Original 5D is on it's last legs (>300,000 shutter), so time to upgrade is approaching - and coincidently the 5Div price in the UK (at least) is becoming very reasonable.

As I ponder whether to retire the 5D now or wait a while, my question to open out to the forum is whether to await the 5Dv (assuming it ever comes) or just get the 5Div sooner. Most of all, away from 'wish-listing', I'm wondering what a 5Dv could achieve over the 5Div simply by adopting the latest digic processor as against the 6+ in the 5Div, and adopting other existent tech (of Canon's). [I'm a photog rather than an engineer, so interested in the take of those more technically minded than me].

For background, money is not really an object, my photography is rarely time critical (so I don't HAVE to have a back-up, such as a wedding photog might desire) - I'm more curious about what a 5Dv could easily have as against 5Div, simply using existing/or coming tech.

Canon UK ambassador Andy Rouse has been active on Instagram apparently teasing a new camera body. I would think he’s not out using another company’s gear, so what could he be talking about?
He mentions using “new kit” and saying “I had to take the motor drive speed down from 30 fps to 5fps as I was taking too many sharp shots”
So what could he be teasing and/or testing? The obvious answer would be the upcoming Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. Andy was one of the early testers of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II, so that’s not too much of a leap to assume. We were told back in February that testing had begun on the EOS-1D X Mark II replacement.
Is it possible that the EOS-1D X Mark III will shoot 30fps with the mirror locked up?
There’s also a possibility he’s testing out the new 32.5mp...

I continue test my lens. I've read https://www.canonrumors.com/tech-articles/how-to-test-a-lens/ article about testing. I've never tested lenses before in this way. I haven't any good printed charts for it, but i've used infinity object to test. I have attached the results. As i can see on pictures left bottom edge more softly then others.




I've create more than 20 different test: infinity object, siemens stars on the wall, led test, brick walls.
I think i have problem in left side of lens.
Other interesting thing. I test the lens on 5DM4. Also I test lens on 650D, from same distance. And on crop camera image more sharp than on full frame. Note: on full frame F4.5, on crop 2.8:

I can't buy anything right now, but I would love to see a bunch of nice photos posted that were taken with the RP and some L or RF glass.

We’ve pretty much confirmed that the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM will be officially announced and available for preorder on or around May 9, 2019.
We’ve been asking around about an official announcement date for the “holy trinity” RF mount zoom lenses, as these three lenses will likely be quite popular. The three lenses are the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.
We’re told that all three “should” be officially announced and available at the same time, and likely before the end of July 2019.
There has been nothing said about when we can expect the RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM or the RF 85mm f/1.2L DS USM to arrive.
As always with lenses, delays in shipping are quite common, so what may be correct information today, can change tomorrow.

When Canon releases a new firmware version, there is the usual list of fixes and feature enhancements, but there are also fixes that aren’t for public consumption and won’t be mentioned in the firmware documentation and it appears at least one such issue was fixed quietly in the Canon EOS R with firmware v1.2.0.
Michael The Maven has posted a comparison of two EOS R cameras, one with firmware v1.1.0 which experienced banding issues and the brand new firmware v1.2.0 which seems to have corrected the issue.

What would be your basic kit (lenses and body) if you switched to the Canon R/RF system? (Gear does not yet have to be available)
Me:

1. Canon RP or R.
2. RF 28-70mm f/2L
3. RF 85mm f/1.2
4. RF 135mm f/1.2L

I shoot fashion and portraits. I'm told I need a 35mm and a 50mm for that kind of work. I don't think I do. Have the 35mm covered in EF anyway.

I've read the teardowns and I understand the level to which the camera is weatherproofed, I'm just wondering if anyone has braved the elements and actually used their EOS R in the rain yet. I might be in a situation of using mine in some inclement weather soon, and I'm wondering how worried about it I should be.

Hello, I'm trying to print to roll paper from Photoshop on a PRO-4000. What should my paper size settings be? I assume the width should be set to the width of the roll? The height? I guess however high I want the photo to be? Should my position on the paper be set to "center?" Should it be set to portrait or landscape orientation? The output of the printer does not seem to do what I want it to. I'm printing to a throwaway roll of paper just to figure it out, and I've had all manner of screwed up prints. I'm just trying to print a thin strip that says "testing the printer" over and over, but I've had it come out sideways, cut off, with huge wasted space around it, everything except how I want it. Is there a tutorial on this anywhere? Thanks.

According to NikonRumors, the following rebates will go into effect on April 28,2019:

(The last one has me intrigued because I have been obsessed with the D850 ever since it came out. I am also very interested in the 500 f5.6 PF for which there is no Canon or Tamron/Sigma equivalent).

Update We’re told that the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM will be officially announced and be available for preorder on May 9, 2019 (in North America), the global release will be at the same time.
According to Nokishita, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM will be the first of the six new unreleased RF mount lenses. There was no word whether or not the DS (Defocus Smoothing) version of the RF 85mm f/1.2L would also be coming at the same time.

We’re told that a loose roadmap for RF mount lenses in 2020 has been shown to select people and that the plan today is to release between 6 to 8 new RF mount lenses in 2020.
Amongst those lenses will be f/4L zoom lenses, perhaps some of the recent patents give us some clues.
At least one “crazy look-what-we-can-do” lens is coming next year.
There will also be at least one fast L prime lens and a couple of non-L lenses, it’s unknown if they’ll be zoom or primes or both at this time.
There has been no world on tilt-shift or macro lenses for the RF mount as of yet.

Hello. I've recently bought new lens Canon 35 mm F1.4L II USM. First thing: loose focus ring (longitudinal play). Like on video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-2QGo2a5ZE .I asked official repair center about this problem. Answer was - "no problem". Second: I hear some strange sound when little shake lens up and down, like loose part inside. When I put the focus ring in infinity position sound is disappear. I bought the lens directly from the manufacturer. I have another lens, but all of them have image stab system. I thought, that prime lens without IS must be absolutely quiet inside.
Please, owners of this lens, can you check your lens for this "problem"?
I want to know, problem or not...
