Teardown: Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

Our friends at Lensrentals.com have done what a lot of us wanted to see done, and that’s a teardown of the brand new Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.
From Lensrentals.com:
There are some of you who are going to scream about how you want metal lenses. OK, Boomer, go get you a metal lens and show us how strong you are. On every other 70-200mm lenses we’ve disassembled, there are multiple metal parts that we can bend with our fingers. There’s not a damn thing we can bend with our fingers in this bad boy. This is going to hold up better than a metal lens, it’s probably sturdier, and it weighs far less.
I haven’t tested it optically. I haven’t even shot with it. But after looking inside it, I want it. The engineering in here is pure art. And even I, the person who mocks construction at any chance I get, can’t find anything to complain about...

Eos Utility

Has anyone had any luck with wireless control of the Eos r using the Eos utility program? It does not seem to support it which I find strange. I could just be doing it wrong. Are there any other windows based programs to use as a substitute for wireless control of the Eos r for a surface pro tablet?

Canon EOS R Mark II in testing [CR2]

We have been told that the follow-up to the original Canon EOS R is now in testing by a small group of Canon professionals.
The source claims that the Canon EOS R Mark II is slated to be announced ahead of Photokina in May and will closely mimic the ergonomics of the Canon EOS Rs, which is slated to be the next EOS R body announced in the first quarter of 2020.
The same source has promised some specifications soon.

Sony "Tough" SD cards to reduce risk of card failure?

I am considering purchasing a Sony "Tough" SD card as a way to reduce failure of the single SD card slot. My concern is that SD cards are physically fragile and I once had an SD card split, rendering it inoperable. The Sony Tough cards are one piece and do not have a potentially vulnerable write protect tab.
It does not appear that I will gain much from the higher speed of the UHS II card, so the main benefit is physical robustness.
Your thoughts?

Still shots using Anamorphic lens/adapters?

Hi all,

I'm sure I"m NOT the first person to think of this, but was just pondering new ideas the other day, and it popped into my head that I have one of the SLR Magic anamorphot anamorphic adapters. It fits onto a couple of old old nikon lenses I can adapt to fit on my 5D3.

I've used this to shoot video and it seemed to work out well. Sure, a bit fiddly, but was fun.

I was thinking, if it worked for video, why not for stills?

The thing is....in FCPX , Davinci Resolve and Premier, they are all set up there for de-squeezing the image to bring it out to the proper aspect ratio.

Is this possible in PS and LR type stills processing software? What would it be called and where in the work flow?

Has anyone else played with this? I thought it might make for some interesting imagery, in a widescreen or semi-pano state of mind.

Thoughts?
Ideas?
Suggestions for post processing?

Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct Lens Review

If you have £8299 to spare and don't mind using a Nikon mirrorless with 2kg of lens of lens attached, then maybe this is for you. Anyway, you simply have to admire its performance at f/0.95.

I weathersealed my EOS RP for $5. DIY/Cool add on.

Love my RP, it's solid, well balanced, quite high quality. But the battery door bugged me. It jiggles around when shut and has an obvious airgap around the perimeter. There is a zig zag fitment which should in theory resist water intrusion to some degree, but I decided to step it up with stuff laying around the house. $5 insulation foam tape from ebay for automotive use. There may be better materials but I've been using this stuff to seal my film camera doors. Works great. The door now closes tightly and feels really premium. No jiggles. And now has an extra barrier for water to get through should I accidentally spill a drink on a table or something.

Firmware: Canon EOS R v1.6.0

As previously reported, Canon has released a firmware update for the Canon EOS R. It turns out it was released at the end of November but hasn’t yet been posted by Canon USA for whatever reason.
Firmware Version 1.6.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:

Support for the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens has been added.
Corrects a phenomenon in which the function or setting value assigned to the control ring may change when the control ring is operated in Eco mode.
Corrects a phenomenon in which the camera may stop operating properly during “auto-transfer” when using Camera Connect with a Wi-Fi connection.
Corrects a phenomenon in which high-speed synchronization with use of an external flash may not operate properly depending on the camera’s setting for C.Fn2 “Set shutter speed range”...

Rumoured Canon EOS Rs Specifications [CR1]

We have received another set of specifications for the upcoming high-megapixel EOS R body, we dub it the “EOS Rs” for now. Canon may call it something else. The source claims to have shot with a prototype recently and that the plan is to announce the new camera in February 2020.
Canon EOS Rs Specifications:

75mp full-frame CMOS
Sensor “focused on the dynamic range”
Frames per second “… Sounded similar to the EOS R”
DIGIC 9
Dual Card Slots
Joystick the same as the EOS-1D X Mark III
Larger and higher resolution EVF than the EOS R
Fully articulating LCD screen
Fully weather-sealed
Similar ergonomics as the EOS R (No touch bar)

We think more will be leaking about this camera in the coming weeks as we get closer to the planned February announcement.

Canon can you make a camera for photographers and not videographers?

How about a Camera for photographers and not videographers?

How about 30MP's staying at 15fps RAW. No sport in the world requires more than 15fps if you know what you're shooting. Nor do BIF or Journalists. Who in this WORLD needs 20fps? If you NEED that buy a movie camera. FACT!!!

We want increased IQ. That's all.

If I want 20fps I'l buy a Frig'n movie camera.

I want my OVF shooting 15fps RAW at 30MP. I'll pay up to $8,000 for that body and another $8,000 for my back-up. The 30MP's will allow the 1DXMKIII to be more well suited for diverse demanding shooting environments. Just because we're sports photographers, Journalists and BIF enthusiasts does not mean we don't want great resolution and IQ. The ability to crop with our prime BIG WHITES we've paid you a fortune for would be nice. It would put out a 30 to 40% better product for the public, our editors and the agencies that pay us for crisp clear shots. 20MP is very 1990's based on today's technology.

SONY and NIKON can do it and even cell phones are so far beyond what I've seen so far in the "Proposed" "Still Photography" capabilities of the MKIII.

It has to have cross-points across my OVF. Straighten up the "Cases" in the User Interface, they are redundant and counter-intuitive. In single-point expanded you need to tighten up the focus so greater weight is placed on the center focal point. Remeber mostly sports shooters are using this in AI-SERVO why does it flop around like a dead bird??? ;) We ALL say the same thing on the sidelines.

Scrap the Movie, Motion Picture GARBAGE. If I want a movie camera I'll buy one that is substantially better than the MKIII at a fraction of the cost.

Canon!!!! I'm a photographer who makes a living taking still pictures. I'm not a videographer. Can you concentrate on photography? Remember us? We're the professional photographers who support CPS, Display our BIG WHITES globally as we shoot sports. We shoot next to your $250,000 broadcast lenses.

If the 1DXMKIII is not for professional photographers vs. videographers PLEASE STOP marketing the product for "professional photographers". We don't shoot High School Sports. If the 1DXMKIII is for amateurs then 20MP - 24MP will suit them fine. it's going to be 2020 and you can't give us 30MP's at 15fps with our OVF? You worked out the kinks with a recall or "Service Advisory" on the 1DX and refined the issues with the Mirror Box with the MKII. Have you devoted so much to videography that you forgot about us "photographers"/

We don't compete with our videography peers as sports photographers or journalists. We don't produce like them or edit like them or deliver like them. Our workflow is apples to oranges. We're professionals not amateurs and still photography for professionals is different than video for professionals. You state the 1DXMKII is for professionals. I don't know a single professional sports videographer for the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, Olympics, MLS or the agencies that shows up with an MKII to shoot or broadcast video for games or tether to a truck, uplink to NOC or TOC. I know because I work on those floors and our broadcast people don't do what I do and I don't do what they do.

It seems like those of us who have dedicated our careers to Canon; fought for budgets for Canon and accumulated full kits are getting shoved to the side of the road for videography.

Try hand holding a f/2.8 300 or 400 on the sidelines using an LCD to follow the action. Impossible!! Now try doing it in sunlight... DOUBLE IMPOSSIBLE.

Canon you need to put out a 30MP, 15fps RAW Camera for stills with the MKIII or your crown will lost. SONY and Nikon are ready to see you stumble and they HOPE you do.

I would prefer to stay with Canon but if those with other equipment have an advantage over me to put food on the table.... YOU are forcing us to switch horses.
