Canon EOS R not good for action photography

...at least that's what I keep on hearing some folks complaining, here and there.
I'm sorry, I didn't know that, so I made a huge mistake: I use it for birds in flight and also sports photography.
Here is a burst of six shots I took today, late afternoon, at a skatepark. I don't know what to say but I believe wedding guests might be a bit slower than these kids, don't you think?

What can be challenging though is keeping the subject in the frame; EVF's suck at this, maybe except for the Sony A9.
The EOS R's AF is very accurate and fast and the 5 fps is acceptable. Of course, faster would be better but I'll take accuracy over speed anytime of the day.
Anyhow, shooting sports with this camera is a piece of cake, compared to BIF, no doubt about that. People are big, slow(ish) and predictable so there's no problem for EOS R's AF.

Problems with EOS R connecting via USB 3.0

I just bought an EOS R and am very happy so far. I have a problem connecting the camera to my desktop via the camera USB-C port to the desktop USB 3.0 port. I have tried three different cables and get the same problem. Connection is made then drops, then is made and drops, repeatedly as though there is a loose connection in the camera USB-C port.
I am aware that auto-power off needs to be disabled, so its not that.
Any ideas before I return the camera?
Thanks

Canon Patent: Potential cooling for a 1 series camera

Canon News has discovered an interesting patent that identifies external accessory based cooling for a 1 series camera body.  While this camera shown in the illustrations is clearly a 1 series camera, it does not appear to be the 1DX Mark III body.  It’s highly possible that this was one of the early attempts to manage heat in the upcoming 1DX Mark III that was later abandoned.

The goal of this patent is to find a way to cool down the camera without increasing the size of the camera, as explained from the patent application;
Conventionally, even in a digital camera, heat generation in an image sensor and an image processing circuit has become a problem due to an increase in pixels of the image sensor and a high frame rate of a moving image. In addition, the camera itself is required to be miniaturized, and there are few parts that release heat. For this reason...

Why the 5D Mark V?

Canon apparently plans to release a 5D Mark V. But which photographers will comprise the market for this camera? And why does Canon want to sell another version of a body that cannot use Rf lenses?

The 5D IV is a great camera. But it won’t take Rf lenses. Ever. Until Canon develops an EVF that is truly great for action photography, I won’t give up my own 5D IV. But why would I want to invest an expected $3300 in an upgraded version of what I have when Canon is also signaling that a pro-level R is in the works? I would expect, for some time after a 5D V is released, the 5D IV will still be available for about $1000 less.

And once that magic version of the R is released, the one with an action EVF, two slots, better weather sealing, faster burst rates, etc., how much interest can a 5D V be expected to maintain? Who will still be buying the 5D V then?

The reason I put this out for discussion is because, as a photographer who is entering a new cycle of event and portrait work as a professional, I have a dilemma. My R is great for portraits, but it isn’t so great as a second body for events which include subjects moving faster than turtles. But the idea of buying another 5D IV that CANNOT use Rf lenses is frustrating. And I don’t expect the “magic R” to appear for another two years.

Like many working photographers, I’d like to be able to carry two cameras, one with a wider lens, one with a longer lens, that can capture whatever equally as well. Two (current) R’s is a non-starter!

I do believe that there are other photographers in this forum who understand what I’m talking about. Carrying two cameras is not all that fun, but it works and gets the job done better than swapping out lenses too often! Carrying three cameras, though, so I can use Rf primes which can’t be matched by anything EF, just isn’t practical.

Obviously, a 5D Mark V will also not solve the problem of not being able to use Rf lenses, so what is the point?

Ok, this isn’t an existential crisis, and I know I’ll likely be reminded of Canon’s industry dominance and implied omniscience, but, really, how long does Canon plan to have parallel lines? What is their end game here? Are they simply trying to sell off massive stocks of EF lenses? Are they worried that whatever EVF they produce will still not be appealing to large numbers of dSLR customers? Or is Canon, in fact, lacking a clear roadmap, just kind of muddling ahead in what is, arguably, their most challenging era to date?

Believe me, I don’t see any of Canon’s competition as having anything better to offer as a complete solution. I’m not singling out Canon as somehow being behind the curve. But Canon is “my” camera company, and, until recently, they have been pretty easy to understand. Even for me!

Canon Patent application for a Canon RF 24-80mm f/4

Canon News discovered a patent application that features a Canon RF 24-80mm f/4.  It’s almost a given that like the EF mount, Canon will come out with a f/4 set of zooms for the RF mount, especially since Nikon has already released an f/4 UWA and normal zoom.
Canon RF 24-80mm f/4 patent:

Focal length: 24.72mm 48.09mm 82.45mm
F number: 4.12 4.12 4.12
Half angle of view:  41.19° 24.22° 14.70°
Image height: 21.64 21.64 21.64
Total lens length: 119.50mm 134.52mm 149.55mm

Should I add the EF 16-35 F4.0 L ?

I sold my EOS 80D and was planning to buy a 90D.
Would it be a good idea to buy an EF 16-35 F4.0 L IS for that 90D? As a walk around lens?
Price is beneath 900€ (<1000 US$) with cashback.
I could also use that lens on my 6D.
Mostly shooting stills.

I already have an EF-s 18-135 Nano and the EF 24-70 F2.8 L.

Or should I keep my money and buy RF lenses for an EOS R in the future?

The best reason to not use the cloud?

Hi Folks.
Is this the best reason ever not to rely on “cloud” storage?

From Canon:-
IT'S TIME TO SAY FAREWELL TO IRISTA
Sadly, we’ve decided to close down Irista. We would like to thank you for using it over the years; we hope that you’ve enjoyed the service.
Your account will remain unaffected until 31 January 2020, when it will close.
On this date, your details and data will be deleted.

Always bear in mind, there is no cloud, just someone else’s computer which they can turn off at any time!

I have pictures on Flickr (the cloud?) but the originals are still duplicated locally with a remote third copy!

Cheers, Graham.

More information on the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III [CR2]

Remember when we told you we saw an image of the 1DX Mark III but couldn’t tell show it? Well, that person got back to us today with a little more details on the 1DX Mark III.
We already know it’s fast,  has great video specifications, built like a tank, and even shoots RAW video.  You can probably use it to prop up your car instead of a jack in an emergency.  It’s very likely to be Canon’s best 1 series DSLR, and hopefully not the last of it’s kind.
The source mentioned a few tidbits to us;

The battery life is nothing short of amazing, much better than the 1DX Mark II.
The silent shutter mode in liveview is absolutely silent.
The eye AF works incredibly well (via liveview we are assuming)
The AF-ON trackpad is so innovative, works fast and it very precise. In the source’s words, “it’s a real revolution. Nobody will be using the old joystick”

We still don’t have some details that some would like to know, such as the megapixels.   According to the source, “it was impossible to...

Are we still going to get teleconverters for the RF mount?

People have talked a lot about the impressively small size of the new RF 70-200 f2.8. But now I'm starting to think... Is there still room in the back of the lens to ever put a hypothetical teleconverter on the back of it? If not, will we see RF teleconverters come out someday that have a very slim profile that don't need to extend into the back of the lens? Is the concept of the teleconverter just going to die out with the RF mount?

I really like the ability to carry around a 70-200 f2.8 with a 2x teleconverter when traveling, and essentially have it perform almost the same duties as a 100-400 lens when I need it to by throwing a teleconverter onto the back of it. I'd hate to lose this if I ever change over to the RF 70-200.

Canon Third Quarter 2019 Financials

Canon released their financials and the news is grim if you look at what has transpired for Canon since they announced the RF mount.
From the numbers Canon is down 22% in sales for the 2019 year on year compared to 2018, and this quarter alone, down 16%.
Canon always posts their financials first, but others will soon follow.   From what we saw last quarter, everyone had bad quarters.  I doubt we’ll see much different this quarter after everyone else shows their financials.

The market is hurting, and still is.  It’s to be expected though. When 75% of the entire market decides to up and change their mounts within a few weeks of each other things are going to go bad.  Combine that with the fact that the old mounts had cameras that were excellent making it even harder to switch users, because they are basically using what they have and don’t have a compelling reason to upgrade.  It would be curious to look back at Canon’s financials when they switched from the FD to the EF mount, but...

Adapted EF TS-E lens performance.

I’ve not seen any mentions of people using the current TS-E lenses on the R and wondered how they performed when adapted.

I’ve used them with a Metabones adapter on a Sony and never thought they performed quite as well as when on a Canon body. This may have been down to the extra resolution of the Sony sensor showing up more issues with the adapter - I have no idea?

Anyone care to share their impressions?

All I want to do is record longer than 30min

Recently I've had a few jobs that require me to record video longer than 30min at a time. Normally it's sort of a documentation thing, recording someone speaking at an event. The cameras I currently have are a 5D MkIV, two EOS Rs, and a C100. Obviously the C100 will do this for me, but it lacks a few important features that really hinder it compared to the 5D or the EOS R. Namely, the C100 does not have auto ISO, the autofocus is pretty primitive, even though it has the dual pixel upgrade, it has no WiFi to control it remotely, it doesn't perform in low light as well as the EOS R or the 5D, and it has the super 35 crop factor, which is a pain to deal with sometimes.

I've thought about getting an external recorder like an atmos to be able to record from the 5D or the R with no time limit, but the problem with that is that it doesn't seem like the atmos has any recording mode that results in fairly manageable file sizes. (Am I wrong here? All the formats I saw when I looked into it seem like the files from the atmos would be way bigger than what you can record natively in camera.) I don't need the extremely high bitrate files that the atmos seems to record, and in fact they become a hindrance when I'm dealing with multiple hours of video.

I even considered buying a 1DC just so I could have a camera with DSLR-like features like auto ISO, but would still record longer than 30min, but it's a pretty old camera at this point, and still quite pricey if you can find one used.

Is there any solution that will let me record from the 5D or the EOS R for longer than 30min with manageable file sizes like I would get in-camera?

Sigma 56mm F/1.4 DC DC | Contemporary 018

The postman dropped it of a few minutes ago, so no proper pictures yet. I took a picture of a blank grey wall. All correction options enabled in camera, Sigma provides distortion and vignetting info in the lens itself (like all Canon EF-M lenses). No DLO. It looks like the camera saves something to EXIF for that since DPP seems to do a pretty good job with distortion and vignetting.
  • Left: CR3 imported into Lightroom Classic, no lens profile used
  • Midle: CR3 imported into Lightroom Classic, Adobe lens profile used
  • Right: CR3 imported into DPP, no changes, export to TIFF, import into LR

Sigma 56mm LR DPP.png

Lightroom seems to do a better job with vignetting. Haven't checked distortion yet, too rainy outside to shoot brick walls :)

Patent: Canon is working on shrinking the size of mirrorless cameras

According to a recently unearthed patent, Canon is actively working on shrinking the size of a full-frame mirrorless camera. We know that Canon is going to be bringing lots of new bodies above the current EOS R offerings, but it looks like there may be something to the thoughts that Canon may be working to add a camera below the EOS RP.
From Japan Patent Application 2019-184921:
An object of the present invention is to provide a technique for suppressing an increase in the size of an image pickup apparatus due to the arrangement of a motor for driving a shutter.
Canon News further breaks down the patent here.

Help with 70D autofocus issue

Hi everyone, so I've been shooting since the days of the 10D and for the life of me, I can't figure out what's going on with the 70D I'm using. I'm between gear at the moment so I'm using my newspaper's body. Basically, it continuously focuses on the background instead of the foreground subject which I have the focus point on.

At least 70% of the time it does this. I've played with the custom function settings, wiped them all, etc. The lens has been serviced recently by Canon and it checked out fine so I'm ruling that out. The focus is also sluggish.

Is there something I'm missing? Some setting I've overlooked? If not, I might have the company send the body in for service. I've attached a few sample shots so you can see the issue clearly.

Please and thanks,
Dan
