Canon Announcements Before CP+, The PowerShot V1 and More...

As always, most imaging companies will make announcements ahead of the CP+ show in Japan, which begins later this month. We have already seen announcements from OM Systems and Nikon, with the latter having another round. Sony is expected to announce some new lenses and Panasonic won't be left out.

Drowning in new R5 Mark II config

The race car and the pickle jar are now in hand:

unnamed.jpg

Now comes the fun of config, controls, etc. I'll pepper this thread with questions in the days ahead.

First: when shooting JPG + RAW, what sort of onboard hocus pocus will cook/modify my JPGs and/or my RAW files?
(less concerned about 'if this feature is on, X must be off, your fps drops or a shutter mode must be Y' -- more concerned about things that permanently alter files, drop RAW bit rate, etc.)

Auto Lighting Optimizer
Anti-Flicker Mode
Highlight Tone Priority
High ISO NR
Lens aberation corrections: corner illumination, distortion, DLO, etc.

Some of this I once knew with my 5D3 and have forgotten over the years. In other cases the R5 might have changed the value proposition of one of these features in a way I am not aware of. And some things done onboard are kinda faff and I'd just as soon manage them in post.

So lay it on me, team. I'm all ears. Thx!

New L-plate for R5 Mark II?

Hey all, one of the items I need to replace as I migrate to the R5 Mark II is my L-plate. I've shot my landscapes with an Arca Z1 monoball for ages and have relied on the RRS L-plates to do that job for me. They're a bit pricey, but they've ticked all my boxes so far.

My requirements list isn't revolutionary:
  • Stills usage only (no need for the top handle, a cage, etc.)
  • Not gripped
  • Horizontal or vertical shooting position option
  • Generally not fond of modular L-Plates with separate bottom / side pieces that require assembly, could come loose, etc.
  • Doesn't dramatically increase the size of the camera if I quickly want to pack the body away with the L-Plate still attached
  • Must retain access to all ports, priority on cable shutter attachment not being a pain
  • No need for dedicated power, a gimbal, video use, etc.
  • In rare tripod + handheld walking/hiking days, having another 1/4-20 hole to directly attach my blackrapid strap to it is a nice feature. (I'm fine not using a camera strap for most landscape sessions, but sometimes I park my setup, detach my camera and go on a walkabout looking for a new shooting position.)
While I wait for those RRS plates to come out for the R5 Mark II (still listed as 'coming soon'), are their others I should have a look at?

Thx,
A

EOS R1: One camera to rule them all

Yodobashi Camera has posted its sales summary for the second half of January, and the EOS R1 has resumed its rightful placement on top of the leaderboard.

It's incredible what twenty-four megapickles can do.

CFExpress Type B -- value of trusted brand vs. Pcie 4.0 speed

Pulling the trigger on the R5 Mark II shortly. Geeked!

Question: I'm building a new comp in parallel with this, and it will have Pcie 4.0 USB capability. I'm not seeing 'known/trusted' brands on Pcie 4 rated CFExpress B cards (for the size I plan to buy). So I have a choice of a (say) Lexar Gold at Pcie 3 or a (relative) no-name / never heard of them offering pcie 4 transfer speds.

Curious what you'd all rather have: Pcie 4 transfer speeds when you get back to the house, or a reliable Pcie 3 card that will hit its reported transfer rates when shooting?

Thx

Custom Setting C2 & C3 grayed out on R, can not recall them

I have successfully set up Custom setting 1, C1 for certain photography type and I can recall it and use it without any issue.
Then I set up Custom Setting 3, C3 for another type and it is registered properly but I can not recall it when I try to select it, it is grayed out.
Actually both C2 & C3 are grayed out and cannot be selected.
Auto update Settings option is Enabled.
I couldn't find anything on the net about this. Any idea what's wrong?
In the picture, you can't really see the difference but C2 & C3 are grayed out and can not be selected!?!

Anyone else using COMBO: RF 24-105/2.8 + RF 100-300/2.8 ? Also RF 600/4 = just old tech, what's next in "new" versions?

Part A:
So, anyone else have this combo and loving it like I am? The range covered while not compromising aperture vs physical space is wonderful IMO. I just got the RF 100-300 and have had the 24-105/2.8 Z for a bit and love the internal zoom.

(internal vs not = Totally another topic for debate which I am not at all interested in having LOL)

Add tele ext and you have a killer two lens backpacking set up for low light and landscapes to birds even. Although in my experience 600 will be a bit wide for small birds most of the time but backpacking for days isn't usually a "birding" tour either. One could step it up and also carry a 3rd lens into the 800's range. I'd want to carry a Nikon Z8 and the 600mm/4 TC LOL.

R5 (Mk 1): Checkered flag button dead while recording video (Av)

R5 Mk 1, Firmware 2.1.0.. The checkered flag button doesn't work for me in video mode. I mean the right-most one with the grid, official name "AF point selection" button.

That is it works before recording, including button customizations, but once I start recording it does nothing.

E.g. I set it to "Movie Servo AF enable/disable" and it only works before recording. The same function works during recording when I put it on the "Depth-of-field preview" button or the "Auto Exposure lock" button.

Same with other functions, they just won't work during recording when I put them on that button, yet work fine on others.

Does it work for you? Any ideas besides a full reset?

Nikon Announces the COOLPIX P1100

You heard it here first: we had discussed since last spring that the compact market was changing in Japan and that manufacturers would come out of their slumber and release new compact cameras (if they were smart). Nikon is the first to announce, and we know that Canon will also announce compact cameras this year.

So, for those who say, how important is the Japanese market? Well, here we are.

Life in Cuba

I went through the photos of my last years Cuba trip and I thought I'm going to post some of them here.
I tried to capture the mood, not so much sightseeing stuff, and hope you like them.
It was like a time travel, a very unique country with amazing people.
All the photos here were taken in Havanna and Trinidad.

R5 eye controlled focus on R5 Mk 1

I recently bought a used R5 Mk 1 and on one occasion I noticed a small round target (about the size of the spot focus square) that moved with my eye movement in the frame of the camera’s viewfinder. No I’m not talking about eye focussing where the camera tracks the animal or person eye to achieve focus.
I know that this model is not supposed to have this feature but I know what I saw and haven’t seen it again. Sometimes a manufacturer will have a feature installed but not enabled. Has anyone else ever seen this on their R5 Mk1?

Canon Patent: RF 20mm F1.4 VCM, 21mm F1.4 VCM, 28mm F1.4 VCM

Canon released the RF 50mm f1.4L VCM, 24mm f/1.4L VCM, and 35mm f/1.4L VCM, and there have been hints that more is coming.

This patent application (2025-015010) shows the RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM. However, other embodiments may come out in the future. Interestingly, the same overall optical element design was used for the RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM, but it does not appear as an actual embodiment.
