Calibrating Eye Controlled Autofocus on R1

Trying to calibrate the Eye Controlled Auto Focus on my R1 for the first time. When I ran the calibration for the fist time it ran alright, 5 dots appeared and disappeared but then thinking that wasn't a good run and I also missed/skipped vertical calibration, I wanted to do it again. But no matter what I do it won't progress from displaying the first point in the middle at the bottom of the calibration screen, I keep staring at it and it keeps blinking, no matter how long I stare at it and change the position of my eye on the view finder, it just keeps blinking, won't proceed to the next point. I tried different calibration Numbers, deleted all the calibration data, turn it off/on. It still will not progress from the very first calibration point in the middle of the screen at the bottom. Any help/idea is appreciated.

Canon Patent Application: Lenses with Optical Distortion Correction

This is an interesting patent application (2025-012993) showing a strange lens configuration.

The embodiments show a potential RF fish eye zoom, even though that is not the focus of the patent application.

Canon Patent Application: Power Zoom Ultra Wide Angle Lenses

In this patent application (2025-011796) we have several embodiments of ultra wide angle lenses that would be power zoom capable. They are all inner focus lenses as well.

It could be that Canon is thinking about making, yet again, another ultra-wide angle, and this time with more of a video focus, or this is in preparation for the eventual replacement of the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM which is approaching 6 years old at this time.

Looking for a remote microphone for my R5

I have a Deity V3 shotgun mic, but when I'm shooting video of my daughter playing you can hear the lens adjusting in the video, and it drives me nuts. I need to get a remote mic of some kind that I can just place a couple feet away from the camera so I don't get that noise. Obviously I'm not going to attach a mic to my daughter, so just something that I can place nearby that connects wirelessly is what I'm looking for....

How to remove condensation from the lens barrel?

Hi everyone,
I would like to know if you know a way to prevent all this condensation from forming on the body of the photographic lens:
Login to view embedded media I was using an anti-condensation band as you can see in the photo, I put it on the lens hood, but unlike last time, yesterday a very high amount of condensation formed on the body of the lens which I then dried before putting it in the bag and before closing the lens barrel so that it did not remain trapped inside it.

but is there a way to prevent it from forming on the barrel body too? Do you put something on it?

The dummy battery does not provide enough power to take pictures with the mirror up?

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I discovered that when I use the dummy battery with the Canon 50d and I try to take a photo the camera turns off at the exact moment it raises the mirror and remains with the it stuck in a raised position, then I reconnect the battery and the mirror lowers again.

There are no problems capturing photos when the camera is in live view mode because in this case it only has to activate the shutter.

I tried connecting the dummy battery to various 5v power banks and the transformed voltage is 8.42v, the one the camera receives, so there shouldn't be any problems but still this happens.

Perhaps more than not providing enough current something strange happens and I don't understand if it's the software side, however it's just a curiosity to understand since fortunately I was able to take photos anyway keeping the mirror always raised with the live view.

What's next for the VCM Hybrid Prime lens line up?

Hey everyone!

So to date, we have gotten the 24, 35 and 50mm f1.4 VCM hybrid lenses from Canon.
What's next in this line up?

I'm really hoping they try to go wider

I personally would love to see anything from a RF 14mm 1.4/1.8/2/2.8, RF 16mm 1.4/1.8/2/2.8 VCM or RF 20mm 1.4/1.8/2.0 VCM on the wide end

I list all those apertures above because at times when going that wide it's hard to keep the same form factor so i'm showing those as potential options
I would prefer they keep them all 1.4 if possible.
Along with the same form factor to keep them all small.
Keep the custom button as it comes in handy for certain scenarios.

doubt they'll have IS built in like the latest ones.

What are your guys thoughts??

R7 comfort pack

My copy of the Sigma RF 10-18 has arrived, which means I retire the Canon Rf 10-18 and have the standard equipment for my individual comfort pack now complete.

I compared it to my comfort pack from 20 years ago and here are the components:

EOS 30D, EF 17-55 2.8, Sigma 50-150 2.8 APO, no name messenger bag, camera strap and 2 batteries.

Weight of all components 3,17 kg or 7 lb

New components:

EOS R7, Sigma 10-18 2.8, Sigma 18-50 2.8, Canon RF 70-200 4.0, Vanguard F27, camera strap, loader plus 2 batteries and a small power bank

Weight of all components 2,95 kg or 6.5 lb

20 years of technological progress give me 33 instead of 8 megapixel, 3 full stops of ISO range, and of cause a way better AF etc… My zoom range increased 8mm downwards and 50mm upwards, adding lens stabilization for the tele but loosing it for wide and midrange. I cary one more lens around but the package is less heavy and less bulky than it was 20 years ago

If you plan for a lightweight trip and are looking for a convenient way to store your equipment, give the Vanguard F27 a try. I’m not as well equipped with bags as Neuro is, but none of the many bags I had really was a good fit for the small RFS lenses. The Vanguard bag can hold the 70-200 2.8 and if I surrender the small equipment it can also take an EF adapter plus an EF 135 2.0

I like the feature that I can open the bag like a bagpack acessing all content or like a messenger bag from top, only accessing the upper part with the camera.

Canon Announces the RF 16-28mm F2.8 IS STM

Canon just announced a new ultra wide angle lens for the RF mount. The Canon RF 16-28mm F2.8 IS STM is very suited to be paired with the 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM that Canon delivered last year. It certainly feels as if Canon is making an F2.8 IS STM prosumer lineup of lenses, and I'm all here for that.

Oddly changing file sizes in R50

For this question, I'm using a 16mm f2.8 Canon RF lens on a Canon R50 body. My image size and format is set to the largest jpeg setting.

I've noticed that when I use the A+ (full auto) mode with this setup and these settings, my file sizes range from 6.99 Mb to around 10 Mb. However, when I switch to M (Manual), my file sizes shrink down to 4 Mb or less.

Can anyone share why this is happening and if there is a way to prevent it, other than just shooting everything in C-RAW all the time?

How fast does your R5ii wake from sleep?

There were complaints that the R5 was slow to wake up from sleep but I had no problems as I would half press the shutter button or press a back button focus as I raised the camera to my eye and it was awake by the time it reached there. However, I am finding that after the R5ii has been in sleep mode for a while it can be irritatingly slow for the exposure details in the viewfinder to activate. Is this unusual?

BCN Awards 2025: Sony and Nikon make Significant Gains

BCN has released its awards for the year 2024. They call the awards “2025” even though the data is from January 1st, 2024 through December 31st, 2024. Don’t ask me why – I don’t run the company.

Canon to start charging for using cameras as webcams

Did you buy a R1 recently? Want to use that as a webcam? You'll need to pay Canon $5/month for the privilege to do so when using Canon's EOS Webcam Utility Suite.

I don't know if I like this move by Canon. Clearly they see Adobe's subscription thing as the basis for something here, buy when you pay Adobe $20 for software, you didn't already buy some other Adobe thing for $10,000.
