Patent: Canon RF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS

Another detailed patent for an RF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens has appeared, the first one came as part of a patent for an RF 100-400mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM.
The 70-300mm zoom lens has always been a part of the budget telephoto zoom lens lines of various manufacturers, and it makes sense that we’ll see one for the RF mount, and likely sooner than later.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III field testing has begun [CR2]

We’re told that the follow-up to the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II has begun field testing with a very small number of photographers and/or engineers. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II was announced on February 1, 2016. This makes an imminent announcement seem highly unlikely.
2020 is an Olympic year and it just so happens that the summer games are in Tokyo, Japan and Canon is a huge Olympic sponsor, and will likely be an even bigger one with the games being in their home country.
We have no idea what the specifications for the camera will be at this time, and we don’t expect an announcement until the very end of 2019 at the earliest. An announcement ahead of CP+ 2020 next February wouldn’t surprise us.
Whenever it does come, will this be the last of the Canon EOS-1D series of DSLRs?

Street Portraits in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho

I have had the Eos R for a couple of months since its release and have done mostly commercial work with it and i couldn't wait to try it out for my personal work. In December I went to Lesotho for a week and stayed in a little village called Malealea...all these street portraits were made there using a Tamron SP 35mm F1.8 and a EF 50mm F1.8.

Many more of my Lesotho street portraits can be viewed here:

The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is finally on the way

The PowerShot G5 X was announced back in October of 2015 and was one of the better selling G series cameras. Its mix of size, EVF and relatively fast 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 lens made it fairly desirable for a point & shoot camera.
Canon prototype named PC 2355 has appeared at certification agencies and has been confirmed as the PowerShot G5 X Mark II by Nokishita.
Along with the PowerShot G7 X Mark III that has been spotted, it looks like we’re going to finally get some updates to the G series line of cameras.
There is no word on a replacement for the PowerShot G3 X which was announced in June of 2015 or the PowerShot G9 X Mark II which came out in 2017.

Dynamic range comparison between the EOS RP, EOS 6D Mark II and EOS R

The most complained about specification in cameras is currently “dynamic range”. It seems to be the current still photography performance metric people are most passionate about when it comes to image sensors.
Jared AKA FroKnowsPhoto has decided to a quick and dirty comparison between the Canon EOS RP, Canon EOS 6D Mark II and Canon EOS R. He was unable to do this until the RAW converter for the EOS RP became available.

The EOS RP has the same sensor as the EOS 6D Mark II, the only difference between the two sensors is the microlens adjustment required for the short flange distance of the RF mount lenses. The EOS RP also has a DIGIC 8 processor, while the EOS 6D Mark II...

Lensrentals.com assembles a lens that can see behind itself

Lensrentals.com, more noteably Roger and Aaron have been working on this crazy fisheye lens for quite some time. They’ve now posted an article and video about the assembly of the C-4 Optics 4.9mm f/3.5 fisheye with a 270-degree field of view. You read that correctly, this lens can see behind itself.
From the Lensrentals.com:
You guys have watched us gut a lot of lenses and cameras over the years. So I thought it would be fun for you to see us put one together from scratch. Compared to many of the lenses we’ve taken apart, this is all mechanical lens is rather simple: no focus motors, image stabilizers, etc. But even a simple lens is a very complex structure. This post will probably give you a good idea of how much mechanical design is required to make even a very basic lens.
The lens is also unique; it’s a prototype C-4 Optics 4.9mm f/3.5 circular fisheye. It’s a massive lens giving a 270-degree field of view, meant for immersive video and specialty shots. To give you an...

Industry News: Here’s the Leica Q2

The Leica Q is my favorite camera of all time, something you may or may not know. From time-to-time, I make this statement on social media.
The Leica Q2 is apparently just around the corner, with an announcement expected in early March. Nokishita has just leaked the first product images of the new camera.
The Leica Q2 will reportedly sport a new 47mp sensor, weather sealing and a 75mm crop mode to go along with the 35mm and 50mm crop modes included in the original Q. Leica will use the same (possibly tweaked) Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH lens. The EVF will also be upgraded.

Tamron to announce two new lenses ahead of CP+ this month

Everyone is announcing their new wares ahead of CP+ this month, the show begins on February 28, 2019. Tamron will be announcing two new lenses for the EF mount (and others) in the next few days.
The new Tamron lenses to be announced:

Tamron 35-150mm f/2.8-4 VC USD
Tamron SP 35mm f/1.4 USD

Tamron is apparently making some bold claims about the SP 35mm f/1.4 USD, claiming that it will be the best 35mm lens ever. Thankfully, we won’t be waiting too long to find out if that’s a legitimate claim or not.

Here’s a vague Canon roadmap for 2019 [CR1]

A very vague roadmap for Canon’s 2019 came to us over the weekend. It seems like the same sort of vague roadmap that happens at internal marketing and sales meetings. Take all of this with a grain of salt.
We’re told to expect an “exciting” new cinema camera, possible ahead of NAB in April. However, the announcement date isn’t confirmed as of yet. There has been some talk about a follow-up to the Cinema EOS C300 Mark II. We’ve heard that there could possibly be an 8K “upgrade option” for such a camera. However, that is unconfirmed at this time.
Canon will likely announce PL...

Two more RF mount lenses could be coming in 2019 [CR2]

We’re told that Canon may announce two more RF mount lenses in 2019, but it’s possible they will get pushed into early 2020.
Apparently, the original plan was to announce the development of 8 lenses with the EOS RP, but for whatever reason, that plan was scrapped. Lens launches have always been a moving target.

We weren’t told what the other two lenses might be, and we don’t want to guess at this point in time. One patent in particular maybe give us some clues about what’s next for RF mount lenses. The patent shows optical formulas for an RF 100-400mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM and a likely Non-L RF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS.
We do think the extremely popular 100-400mm zoom will be one of the next few of lenses to be announced.
I suspect we’ll get more clues over the next couple of months with further patents being uncovered.
We don’t yet know when the...

Problems with EVF brightness

May I ask you for advice:
My Eos R is suffering from an low EVF brightness. If I change the brightness level, from level 4 to 7 there is no change in brightness in the EVF. Eco Mode is off.
EVF brighness changes work on the Display.
Did an reset two times, but nothing changed.

It is no pleasure to shoot in bright condition for me at this moment.

Any advice you can give me please?

Canon G3X Mark II

Hello all :)

I am looking at getting a compact bridge camera with a bit of a zoom on it and like the look of the G3X. I read some place that there may be an announcement in Feb (this month) about a possible G3X Mark II and a hope of it containing an APS-C sensor.

I would like to know your thoughts on how likely this is?

Thank you for any info/insight.

Cheers

Canon, Canon Canon….. Please help the video stars

I’m not a video guy (though that is changing), and I usually err on the side of Canon when it comes to the video features that they put into cameras. I realize a lot of what they may omit from a camera can sometimes come down to reliability and usability, as they want to make a creative tool that you don’t really have to worry about. I think anyone can admit Canon is probably at the top of the heap when it comes to these sorts things, even if the spec list doesn’t set the world on fire.

I also realize Canon seems to want to protect camera models that are up the food chain. Though I’ve always liked Steve Jobs’ philosophy on this; “If you don’t cannibalize yourself, someone else will”. But that’s a conversation for another day.
Now we have the Canon EOS RP, a small full-frame camera that looks fantastic for stills shooters. Video shooters were pretty much expecting an EOS M50 with a full frame sensor and an RF mount, which I think was a completely justified expectation. No one was...

When to switch from EF to RF ?

I've a bunch of lenses and currently a 5DmkIV and a 7DmkII.
I'm actually pretty happy but I'm missing 2 things: a significantly wider lens than a 16-35 and I'd like a second FF body.
in an EF world that would be easy: another 5DmkIV and an EF11-24 and I'm lighter quite a bit of money.
But then comes along RF... in principle esp. the very wide lenses should benefit most from the RF's shorter flange distance, but they don't make it yet.
Same for the R: it wants to either use a smartphone's GPS or an GP-E2 mounted on the hotshoe. [I used to have a GP-E2 on an 5DmkIII, not a fan at all]

I don't have to have the second FF body, but it avoids lens swaps in dirty places and far more importantly, allows for more time taking pictures (instead of "playing" with gear).
The lens at a point will become more pressing. As there's too many far too large things I can't back away from I encounter. Probably won't need the 11mm, but I need better than 16mm too often and have too often to compromise too much from what I wanted to get in the frame. I know the drawbacks of the perspective effects really wide lenses give already on a 16mm and it's only going to be worse, but well ...

I know I'd be perfectly happy with the EF solution, but it'll start to nag at a point that I'm "missing the boat" with the RF system.
No GPS is for what I do not an option, so I'd need to buy a GP-E2 and deal with the size of it, the AA batteries, not forgetting to turn it on, ... all-in-all not a nice solution.
Moreover it'll bring back really bad memories of the horrible copy of the 5DmkIII I used to have - really hated that body.

With Canon focussing on the lower end RP, and on lenses they'll probably sell more copies of than any of the extremely wide ones ... when do I stop waiting for them to start selling what I want/need ?

Also is there any hope a "next" RF body will have proper in-body GPS receivers ?
Or will it remain a kludge with a bulky GP-E2 on your body or a bluetooth connection to a phone that's prone to call it quits in far too many conditions to rely on it working at all times?

I'm leaning to going the EF path more and more, and sell it on if and when I get the feeling I'm missing the RF boat.

Opinions ?

A YouTube Channel is coming to Canon Rumors

So we’re going to remain cutting edge here at Canon Rumors and be one of the first to get a YouTube channel.
It’s long overdue, but it has taken a long time to come up with a concept that isn’t just more of the same, as others already do such an amazing job on the platform.
We hope to launch in April/May of this year.
You can head over the channel and subscribe so you’re ready as soon as we get going.

What’s next for the Canon EOS R system and the rest of the lineup?

It never fails, once Canon announces a new camera, the inevitable question we receive is “what’s coming next?” The launch of the EOS RP (preorder here) was expected and has received a lot of positive feedback from the still shooters, though the video guys seem to mostly be annoyed by the lack of 1080p at 24fps, which we also feel was a strange thing to omit.
We have some ideas about what’s coming next, and we’ve heard a few bits of information in regards to the EOS R system, so we’ll try to quickly break down what we’ve been told is coming mixed with a little bit of what we think is coming.

EOS R camera bodies
We know a third EOS R body is coming sometime in late 2019 or early 2020. Though dates can obviously move depending on how development goes. We think the 6 new RF mount lenses will have to...
