2018 was the worst year for the digital camera market since peaking in 2009 - CIPA

W55w2Rr.gif

The above graph on interchangeable lens camera shipment December data from CIPA: While the market for interchangeable lens cameras and lenses is down, it’s been the digital compact market (point & shoots) which has suffered most, although the carnage of the last five years seems to be levelling off. Holding up the interchangeables market is the mirrorless segment, which according to more detailed CIPA figures, in fact increased year-on-year sales compared to 2017 by 1.4 percent in volume and 23 percent in value.

So while compacts are falling way behind, DSLRs are falling behind as well, which has resonances with that old joke about the two hikers being pursued by a bear. DSLR’s still outsell mirrrorless cameras by 6.62 million (61.5%) to 4.14 million (38.5%), but in dollars terms, the value of the two segments is about equal.

Canon recently said they expect two more years of market shrinking until market stabilizes.

Review: Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM

Most of the talk around Canon is about the EOS R system and RF mount lenses, but Canon has recently released two brilliant new super telephoto lenses, one being the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM.
Bryan at the The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the new king of the 400’s. Needless to say, the review is glowing.
With superb build quality, a moderately-long telephoto focal length, an ultra-wide aperture, a fast and precise AF system, and extremely-high-grade image quality, the built-for-speed EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III package works exceedingly-well for serious, discerning sports photographers, wildlife photographers and photojournalists. This is the type of lens that will have under-funded photographers digging through their gear kits searching for anything that might be considered non-essential and potentially contributing to the 400mm f/2.8L IS III fund...

Canon to announce at least 6 new RF lenses next week

Update: Canon will announce at least 6 new RF lenses, we’ve added the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS to the list.
Canon is going to be announcing at least 5 RF lenses next week, and we’ve also been told as many as 8 will be announced.
Five lenses have already leaked and they include the following:

Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM
Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM
Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM
Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM
Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS

That’ll give us the promised “holy trinity”, as well as the already rumored RF 85mm f/1.2L and a new superzoom that will likely be available in a kit.
The Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS ended up being wider than 16mm to begin the “holy trinity”, but...

2019 Super Bowl Cameras

As always, I like to watch the super bowl for the production and cameras, not the football. Saw tons of big whites as usual. At the end when Brady was walking around and all the reporters were swarming him, I just saw a circle of 1dx and red rings. I think I saw 1 sony. Not sure if I saw any Nikons.

What about you guys, what did you see?

Canon EOS RP to cost $1599? [CR1]

The Canon EOS RP will be announced on or around February 14, 2019. It will be the new entry-level camera for the Canon EOS R system. There are further bits of information that have come out over the last couple of days.
The rumored price of the Canon EOS RP body is $1599 USD, we have also heard $1499 USD as the starting price for the EOS RP.

All of the specifications you’d expect are going to be there, starting with some kind of variation of the EOS 6D Mark II sensor, DPAF, DIGIC 8 and a single card slot, nothing one couldn’t have guessed. It’s also rumored that we’ll see 4K recording at up to 30fps on the EOS RP.
We’ve been told that the cost savings will come from some ergonomic differences (removal of the touch bar?) and lesser build quality than the EOS R and I imagine the image sensor will also help reduce costs.
Following the EOS RP, expect the next EOS R camera to go upmarket in the form of a higher resolution...

One last round of EOS body upgrades left?

Looking at the last transition from FD to EF (EOS) gives us an idea how the transition from EF to RF systems may play out.

Timeline
1981 - "New F-1" was introduced
1985 - Four FD lense models were introduced
1987 - EF system was introduced
1989 - New FD200mm f/1.8L: Last FD lens was introduced
1990 - Canon T60: Last FD body was introduced. This is a consumer body equivalent to a EOS Rebel
1992 - Last New F-1, top of the line FD body, was manufactured. This a pro body equivalent to a EOS 1D
1994 - New F-1 body was discontinued
1995 - Last batch of FD lenses was manufactured
2004 - New F-1 body factory support ends

It appears to me that we can only look forward to at best 1 last round of EOS bodies from Canon. Per CR's Buyer's Guide these are the possible timeframe of release if we base the product cycle on average days between releases.

March 2019 - 1D X Mark II replacement
September 2019 - 7D Mark II replacement
February 2020 - 5Ds R replacement
April 2020 - 5D Mark IV replacement

Note: List isnt exhaustive of Canon bodies.

I expect all of these bodies to be refreshed before July 2020 for the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

With Canon devoting all their, now very limited, resources to the RF mount leads me to believe that new EOS bodies by 2024 or 2025 will not happen.

Patent: Canon Back Side Illuminated (BSI) DPAF image sensor

Canon continues to work on new sensor designs based on the patents we’ve seen over the last year or so. This patent covers a lot of things, most notably a backside illuminated sensor, or more commonly known as BSI.
Canon News writes:  (USPTO 20190035827
Much has been made over Sony’s BSI (back side illuminated) sensors, and I’m sure Canon is certainly researching making their own.  BSI sensors have efficiency gains not found in normal sensors.  They are also much better in mirrorless cameras because the light doesn’t have to penetrate as deep into the sensor, and mirrorless cameras have a higher angle of incidence of light hitting the sensor near the corners.
We expect some big gains in Canon sensor technology once the next generation of sensors makes...

Patent: Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS

Another patent application for a Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS has appeared within what appears to be a patent for the RF 28-70mm f/2L.
From Japan Patent Application 2019015956:

Focal length: 24.69 37.63 67.88
F-number: 2.91 2.91 2.91
Half angle of view: 41.23° 29.90° 17.68°
Image height: 21.64 21.64 21.64
Lens total length: 139.21 150.29 171.74
BF: 13.49 22.31 35.10

Canon has already let us know that they’re hard at work on the “holy trinity” of pro zoom lenses for the RF mount. We expect all three lenses to be announced in 2019.

Disable Touch AF

Anybody figure out how to turn off the touch AF yet?

I use back button AF, and want to use the touch screen to move the AF point, but not focus until I do it myself with the AF-on button.

That way I can put the green AF square where I want (say the foreground in a landscape shot), focus with the AF button, then move the AF square to where I want the camera to meter (say the highlight/sky on a landscape) then take the picture without it changing the focus by itself.

This easy on the 5D4, since it doesn't have that annoying "touch AF" feature (at least annoying to me, it probably rocks for lots of users). But you should be able to turn it off. I have still not been able to figure out how.

Thanks for any help.

Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 IS USM coming in 2019? [CR1]

We’re told one of the lenses coming from Canon in 2019 will be an RF 50mm f/1.8 IS USM. We’re also told that this lens will be built much better than the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM and include USM over STM.
I think if we’re getting an upmarket RF 50mm f/1.8 IS USM for the RF mount, we’re not going to see another 50 f/1.4 from Canon for quite some time, if ever.  That said, with the price of the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L, there’s definitely going to be pricing room to fit in another 50mm lens.
Note the [CR1] rating of this post and treat this information accordingly.

sure they could totally messed up the AF but i doubt it.

EOS R as second camera?

I'm a stills only guy, so video features don't matter (portrait / fashion... model boot camps and fashion shows). I also almost never use continuous shooting anymore. It may occasionally happen with a model walking towards me. Full frame is important to me. Getting a second camera with a button layout similar, or the same, as my 5D Mark III (still a great camera in my book) used to be a big deal in my mind, but maybe not so much anymore. As such, the new R has slowly made it's way up the ladder on my list as a new camera I might be interested in by next Christmas vs a 5D mark IV.

The reasons for this are an infatuation with the new RF 50 f/1.2, RF 28-70 f/2, price, and security (yes, security). I do most shooting (99%) with my 24-70, 70-200, and 135mm. I'd like to not have to change lenses during a shoot and quickly get a different perspective sometimes. Nobody carries my bag for me and I shoot these models in very public places with a lot of foot traffic (downtown areas like Mobile, Birmingham, Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, DFW, and next September... New York City). Sometimes I can be a few feet from my bag and I worry about theft while I'm not looking. I'm too big and old to chase anyone down. So my idea is to run with the 24-70 on one camera and 70-200 or 135 on the other.

For stills only, I am thinking the recently released R might be a good choice. It isn't something I have to have, but makes sense to me for my particular uses. I'm thinking there might be some good sales / rebates near the end of the year on the R and the 5D mark IV. Also, a second FF camera would be insurance against failure of the first during an event.

For you folks that shoot mostly stills, what do you think? Any other ideas? Using my Olympus as a second camera is out of the question. That's really for my tiny wife. I almost hate using it. Using another brand is also out. I really would value the ideas of those who already use the R. How's your AF hit rate adapting EF to the R? How is the focus peaking working for you on manual lenses? No, the 6D and 6D Mark II are not options I will consider.

Canon Inc. full year 2018 financial results, and thoughts on the industry and future goals

Canon has released their final financial results for 2018. Sales were down year over year, but Canon managed to increase profits while dealing with declining sales in 2018.
Canon’s thoughts on the imaging industry in 2018:
The 2018 interchangeable-lens camera market was impacted by restrained purchasing of advanced amateur models, prior to the launch of new full-frame mirrorless cameras by each manufacturer, and the further contraction of the DSLR market, mainly due to lower sales of entry-class models. As a result, the overall interchangeable-lens camera market continued to shrink. Even under these conditions, sales of mirrorless cameras—with their lightweight, compact body designs—continued to grow. This reflects improvements in mirrorless camera performance in such areas as autofocus, which is now comparable to that of DSLRs.

Against this backdrop, we are framing this year as one in which we take measure that...

Another Canon EOS R series body mentioned [CR2]

We don’t think the following information is related to the Canon EOS RP but could be information related to a third Canon EOS R camera body coming later in 2019.
New Canon EOS R body information?

The camera is in “final” development, but production has not started.
Dual card slots are present in the body, one being SD, the other being something else.
The touch bar is gone, replaced by a familiar joystick.

We don’t have any sort of specification list we can publish about the Canon EOS RP, but we don’t think this information fits the hints we have received about the coming mirrorless camera from Canon.
