How do you have the buttons/dials set up on the EOS R?

While I'd still like it if there were completely customizable buttons the way Sony does it (allowing any button to do any function, not limiting certain buttons to certain functions), there are still a bunch of ways to customize the EOS R buttons and dials. While I miss some of the buttons that the 5D4 has that the R did away with, it has forced me to really consider what I assign each button to on the R.

This is currently how I have the buttons set up that seems to let me use the camera the most easily. I'm curious about what everyone else has done with their buttons and dials. There are so many ways to set things up that I'm wondering if I'm missing any helpful button assignments.

Directional pad: Direct AF point selection. I usually use touch and drag for moving the autofocus point, but without coming up with another really good use for the D-pad, I just set it as a redundant way to move the AF point. I don't use it much, it's slow.

AF ON: I don't like back button autofocus, so I set this so that when I hold this down, it transforms the front dial (by the shutter button) into a dial that adjusts exposure compensation.

AE lock: I also don't use AE lock, so I set this button to toggle back and forth between one shot and servo AF. It's nice for those times when you quickly want to switch between the two.

Focus point selection: I set this to put the display to sleep for those times when I accidentally get something too close to the viewfinder so it wakes the camera up, and then wakes the display up when whatever was close to the viewfinder moves away from it. I really wish I didn't have to devote a whole button to this, but I end up accidentally waking up the camera way more than I intend to, and I don't want it to set there draining the battery.

Top screen illumination: I set this to actually illuminate the top screen with one press, none of this holding it down crap that it comes with by default. If I want to illuminate the top screen, I don't want to stand there holding a button down to do it.

Movie record button: I set this to change the AF point mode. I don't use it much because I usually just use single point AF, but as I remember the options for this button were pretty limited.

Control ring adapter: I set this to aperture because I don't really like the position of the rear dial, so this way I don't really have to use it for much.

Touch bar: I set this to focus magnification. I really don't like the touch bar, and the number of things you can set it to is limited, so I just set it to whatever seemed useful and I didn't already have an easy way to adjust.

I think that's about all I customized. The remaining buttons I think I left as a default.

Canon announcements coming February 14, 2019? [CR2]

With the CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan beginning on February 28, 2019, it’s obvious we’re going to see some significant product announcements from Canon ahead of that date. CP+ is generally a show that Canon uses to show a lot of new gear.
WPPI also begins in Las Vegas on February 27, 2019. You can see the 2019 trade show schedule here.
The latest word on the street is that Canon will be announcing new gear on February 14, 2019. This date is quite likely for announcements.
We think the Canon EOS RP will be announced, along with at least 2 RF mount lenses. The PowerShot G7 X Mark III may also make an appearance for this show, but is so far proving to be a unicorn. There’s been no mention of any new EOS M or EOS DSLRs being announced as of yet.

Canon R&D = very old technology. Evidence found.

To all fanboys/deniers out there: you were wrong all along.
The technology Canon incorporates in their cameras is old. Very old.
Attached evidence that the 1DX mk2 was tested 10yrs (almost to the date) prior to release (Feb. 2016).

BTW: i am pretty sure this is not a typo, but rather a slip of info!

Before i am selling my (old) 5DIV + gear, do you have any advise on wether i should go ahead and buy the new GoPro as my go-to camera?Screenshot.png

EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III and EF 600mm f/4L IS III developers talk about the new super telephoto lenses

Canon USA has published an interview with the developers of the brand new Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III and Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III super telephoto lenses, the lightest lenses of their kind in the world.
A lot more went on during the development than just weight reduction. New challenges lead to new materials, manufacturing processes and functionality.

Some of the design goals and challenges facing the developers:

Rather than simply making the lens lighter, we retooled the lens from the ground up for an overall balanced weight.
Improved mobility and portability, with reduced weight
A significant — not average — reduction in weight
We were convinced we could reach our goal thanks to the
proposal of a new optical system.
New challenges, one after the other, with tag-team efforts
between Optical Design, Mechanical Design...

Canon thinks the camera market will drop by another 50% over the next two years

In an article published by the Nikkei news, Canon’s president Fujio Mitarai talks about the future of the camera business and where it’s heading over the next couple of years.
Canon thinks that the camera market will shrink another 50% over the next 2 years, which is changing some strategies at Canon on how to deal with the change in the marketplace.

Canon’s camera sales have declined 10% a year over the last few years.
The global market for interchangeable lens cameras is about 10 million units a year.
Mirrorless camera sales are not adding to the market, they’re merely replacing DSLR sales. This is likely why Canon and Nikon waited so long to enter the full frame mirrorless segment. Putting forth the R&D to cannibalize yourself probably gets the bean counters in a tizzy.
Canon will shift its business to more corporate sales than consumer retail sales
Canon obviously recognizes what Smartphones have done to the sales of entry-level cameras, but Canon thinks they’ll continue to...

Is the Canon EOS RP the next camera up?

Update: Canon also uses “EG” for camera bags.
Nokishita has found some information about a new Canon accessory called the “EG-E1”. this item appears to come in 3 different colors. Nokishita wonders if this is a new battery grip? This doesn’t seem likely, as current “EG” models from Canon are for focusing screens like the “EG-S”. The current Canon EOS R battery grip is called the BG-E22.
Also mentioned is a new camera, the Canon EOS RP. It’s unsure if this is what Canon’s next EOS R camera is going to be called, or if it’s just an internal name.
All signs point to the next EOS R series camera to slot below the EOS R in pricing.
I’d expect to see the EOS R lineup addressed with a couple of...

Canon Has Bigger Plans and Much More Then 120 Megapixels

I had recently seen the headline that Canon most likely will come out with 100 megapixel camera. This should not be a great surprise, canon holds the most patents when it comes to such and they have shown prototypes in 2015 for 120 mpix, but it does not stop there. In their medical imaging group they have 250 mpix and up.

The point here is,canon is playing the marketing game. Now it faces, pressure in the market from other players,so we should see more camera and higher megapixels to come in the near time frame.

Canon has a division in Cambridge mass, that has a 120 megapixel sensor for leasing and I am sure more will comes. Canon, will of course limit who gets such as why give your tech away to competition or at least your best sensors.

It will be a megapixel race and the other players like Panasonic S1R, Sony and Nikon, will have to or are already developing their own high megapixel sensors.

WHile I love Canon, they are expensive and we need competition to drive the prices down. I think Lumix Panasonic and Sigma are positioned to make that happen and I for one will be trying out there new S1R.

Patent: Non-L RF Mount zoom lenses

Northlight has uncovered a USPTO patent showcasing some telephoto zoom lenses for the RF mount. These lens designs appear to be fairly simple and might suggest they’re not L zooms.

The Canon EOS R system will obviously need some less expensive glass, and announcing a non-L RF 70-300 alongside an entry-level EOS R system camera would make a lot of sense.

//macphun.evyy.net/i/260424/567713/3255
Optical formulas included in this patent:

RF 70-300mm f/4-5.6
RF 100-400mm f/4-5.6
RF 50-240mm f/4-5.6

I’d wager on the RF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 being a non-L telephoto zoom that will hit the market for the RF mount. I think Canon would keep the RF 100-400mm for an L zoom down the road.

Patent: Canon RF 24-80mm f/4L IS & more

A patent showing a couple of higher-end Canon EOS R kit lenses has made its way to the public eye. One of the optical formulas in this parent is for an RF 24-105 f/4L IS, which we obviously already have.
The second embodiment is for an RF 24-80mm f/4L IS. This is a smaller lens and makes some sense as a second and less expensive L kit lenses for RF mount cameras.

I noticed the EOS R sometimes stops down lenses during focusing, what's the deal with that?

I just noticed when using both an EF 50mm 1.2L and an EF 50mm 1.0L on the EOS R that the camera actually stops down the lens while it's attempting to autofocus in moderately bright conditions. If you have the aperture set wide open, it opens back up to actually take the photo. It will even stop down the lens when you aren't trying to focus by just pointing it at a bright source of light. If you focus under pretty dim lighting, the lens doesn't stop down. This seems kind of weird. I wonder why this happens. Apparently under some conditions there's just too much light hitting the sensor for it to focus properly? I do wonder how it can possibly nail focus at a wide aperture if it's not actually at the wide aperture when it's autofocusing.

new Olympus EM1X - Everything and the kitchen sink - updated feature list rumor

It's a pretty comprehensive list that looks like a computer translation of a Japanese news release to english but it's plenty readable.

https://www.43rumors.com/ft5-these-are-the-full-e-m1x-specs/

That's a heck of a lot of camera!

Thoughts on the Canon EOS R roadmap

Almost immediately after the announcement of the Canon EOS R camera and RF mount, Canonites and others were already wanting what was coming next.
Now, the Canon Rumors community likely qualifies as a fairly advanced camera consumer. Unfortunately, the Canon Rumors community isn’t the majority of Canon camera buyers and I think enthusiasts can lose track of that from time-to-time, it’s not a slight, it’s just a reality of the camera business.
A great source and I had a conversation recently about the future of the EOS R system, and mostly about what camera(s) to expect next. The source simply lead the conversation with “follow the money”.
And what does that mean?

//macphun.evyy.net/i/260424/567713/3255
Simply, do not expect any sort of “niche” or “professional” mirrorless cameras prior to the release of more “entry level” products. A $4000+ camera simply doesn’t move anywhere near the volume that a sub $1500...

MFA for 5.6 lenses?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but do I need to MFA my 5.6 lenses? I have Canon EF 400mm 5.6, EF-S18-55 mm 3.5/5.6 and EF-S 17-85 mm 4/5.6. These two zooms are only used at f5.6. I also have the EF 70-200 f4 IS. Cameras are a 7D2 and a 6D. I ask because a friend said only lenses less that f4 need to be microfocussed because the other lenses have more depth of field to cover focusing errors.
