EOS R on night drives (Kruger National Park)

Some feedback if you want to use the R on a night drive on an african safari. The best camera for autofocus at night with just the light of a torch or spotlight. I struggled previously and this time I brought a 70-200 iii 2.8 with. It worked excellent with the R. I then used the 400 DO ii 4.0 witch did not work well previously and the same results. The moment you have a bit of light on the subject the focus is aquired almost immediately. With animals as far as 70m away. I would strongly recommend taking an R with on an african safari as you will eventually go on a night drive or two and the R REALLY makes a huge difference. I do not know why. On paper it should not be that much better than the 6dii or 5div but it does. Keeper rate for in focus shots went up from approx 20% to 90% plus. And focus aquisition 4 or 5 times faster.

Canon to bring a new 4K camcorder to CES 2019

UPDATE: Canon has officially announced the VIXIA HF G50 camcorder.
It appears Canon will announce the VIXIA HF G50 4K camcorder for CES 2019, which begins tomorrow. No word on the full specifications, but the announcement appears imminent.
We had assumed we’d also see the PowerShot G7 X Mark III announced for CES, but everything has been very quiet on the PowerShot front, so we’re not sure what’s going on there.

New major firmware for the Canon EOS R should arrive soon

Getting information on new firmware updates ahead of time has always been a very big challenge. I assume most firmware development has a soft release date because rushing firmware is never in the best interest of customers.
We’re told that a major functionality firmware update for the Canon EOS R should arrive sometime in the first quarter of 2019. What makes the update “major” and what sort of features are going to be added were not disclosed. It was mentioned that user and media feedback is going to play a major role in future updates for the Canon EOS R and other EOS R bodies.
The source did say that it’s possible a minor bugfix firmware update will precede the major release.
More to come…
The Canon EOS R is available at Adorama

Recommended a good versatile lens.

I've been using my 80D for around 6 months now. So far I've just been using the 18-55 that I got the camera with. I love to shoot land and seascapes.

I'd like to get into macro photography in the future, but for my first 'nice' lens I want something that's not so specialized. I could even do 2 lenses, but at the moment I'd like something I can really work out, instead of getting a few and getting overwhelmed.

I've got a budget of around $1400, so I'd love some recommendations.

Discovered this fascinating YouTube video of the evolution of Rocket Photography/Filmography. It's truly amazing how great the results have been over the decades, even during in the Apollo program. Since CR doesn't seem to have any categories of Science, Industrial, Space or Aviation related topics and no General Interest or 'Cool Stuff' topics to file under, I put it here. Hope you enjoy!

The Canon EOS M50 and Canon EOS R continued to sell well in December

BCN has released their monthly sales numbers for cameras in Japan for the month of December 2018. Canon continues to dominate the top 20. The Canon EOS M50 continues to be a big seller for Canon, holding down the #3 and #4 spots on the list. The Canon EOS R is sitting in 13th place, one spot ahead of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II.
Canon continues to dominate the Nikon Z 6 and Z 7 cameras with the EOS R, the Z 6 is sitting in 39th spot for the month.
Sony’s full frame mirrorless offerings continue to be the best sellers of the segment, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The A7 III is sitting at #10, which is the best spot for a full frame mirrorless camera.
These sales charts are for Japan only, but they’re very accurate. I haven’t seen similar...

Review: Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the brand new RF 28-70mm f/2L USM for the Canon EOS R. This lens was part of the initial launch of the EOS R system the new RF lens mount. It’s the fastest standard zoom lens ever made for full frame mirrorless cameras. It’s well built, and pretty great optically.
From The-Digital-Picture:
The Canon RF 28-70mm F2 L USM Lens is a large, heavy and expensive lens that is also awesome. Garnering a world’s first on its credit list, this lens brings the f/2 aperture to the extremely useful standard zoom lens. With the RF 28-70mm F2 L Lens in your hand, it is like having a large kit of prime lenses always mounted on the camera. That this single lens may be able to replace a kit of alternative prime lenses makes those three downsides much more tolerable. The image quality provided by this professional-grade, all-around-high-performing...

Irix lenses now fully compatible with the Canon EOS R

From Irix:
We would like to announce and confirm that there are no issues with Irix lenses, as regards their general operation for the Canon EF mount in their current line-up when used on the Canon EOS R camera, and as released by the Canon Corporation via their Canon EOS R Adapter (Canon EF to Canon EOS R mount).
Thanks to this, it is possible to control the aperture from the camera, information about the distance transmitted to which the lens is focused, and to save full information about the exposure parameters in the EXIF format.

Compatible Irix lenses:

Irix 11mm f/4
Irix 15mm f/2.4
Irix 150mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro

As many as 7 new RF lenses coming in 2019 [CR2]

Canon’s 2019 roadmap is not yet clear for us on the camera side of things, but the lens side of things seems to be coming into focus (I see what I did there).
Canon has said themselves that no new EF lenses would be coming in 2019, but we do expect at least one EF-M lens and a few new RF lenses. Canon mentioned at the EOS R announcement that they’re working a series of f/2.8 zoom lenses, which is likely the “holy trinity”.
We’re told that we can expect up to 7 new RF lenses being announced in 2019, though a few may not begin shipping until early 2020.
Rumoured RF lenses for 2019:

RF 16-35mm f/2.8L (or similar)
RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS (or similar)
RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (or similar)
RF 105mm f/1.4L
RF 85mm f/1.8 IS STM
RF Macro lens
RF non-L kit lens

A wide-angle prime lens is also currently in development, but this source did say that it wasn’t part of the 2019 roadmap, but that can always change when it comes to lenses.
A non-L kit lens for the EOS R is likely in the pipeline...

EOS 5D Mk iv or EOS 6D Mk ii

I am looking at these two models and I am seeing marginal gains on the 5D versus the 6D, but I am seeing a sharp increase in price for the 5D. Is there anyone here who had used both and can tell me if the cost justifies the gain with the 5D.

I really need something that preforms well in low light, saves me time in post, and is easier to use in the field; while not being an investment that takes me months to recoup without any gain in productivity. Showbox Tutuapp Vidmate

One of the features that I am drawn to is the dual pixel focus adjustment that allows me to adjust the focus in post on the 5D. Primarily I get work doing personal shoots and porteaits, some events, and personal projects for myself and others.

Based on that can anyone weigh in on what the best choice for me would be? Either one of these is already a big investment for me based on my current modest set-up.

Light stand / flash / umbrella recommendations

OK i want to upgrade my current set up which is two fairly inexpensive light stands with flashgun mounts and two shoot through umbrellas around 30 inch which i use for indoor groups and similar on the odd occasion when needed and very infrequently outdoors so the ability to weigh them down with bags hooks or similar would be good.

these have done me fine over the years but have their issues and want something better quality , currently the light stands are prone to dropping back down with a little pressure so not clamping great and the flashgun connectors are fiddly so would rather have something stronger and easier to get on and off.

Prob looking to spend around 100-250, the wescott umbrellas I have are fine and can be used again.

Any suggestions welcomed :) thank you and Happy new year

Bit the EOS R bullet!

Ok, after a lot of back and forth and multiple trips to the local camera store to try out the camera, and compare it side by side with the 5D4, reading up countless reviews and user feedback - I have finally pulled the trigger and placed the order for the EOS R. It will be replacing my trusty 5D3. Anxious to find out if I made the right move or should have waited for the upcoming EOS R body that is rumored to be come in 2019? I was wondering when in 2019 it is coming? Any guesstimate?

I had few questions how other EOS R users customized the following things

1) Mfn Bar
2) Image playback in the viewfinder
3) What settings/mode are you using to track locked subject?
4) What are you guys using for Exposure Compensation? Control ring? I miss the wheel.
