Another interview about the EOS R and talk of an APS-C EOS R Body

DCWatch has posted an interview with Canon’s Executive Office for the imaging division at Canon Inc. in Japan. There were a few interesting questions and answers above and beyond what we’ve already heard since the EOS R was launched.
What does The R in EOS R mean? (Google Translated)
The development concept word for this new system is “Reimagine optical excellence.” The letter “R” took the first letter of its first word “Reimagine”. However, in the development stage, various words such as “Revert”, “Reborn”, etc. with “R” flickered with the meaning of “redefining” EOS again “to reactivate”. As a result, we have developed the concept of “Reimagine optical excellence.” And decided to use “R” for both product name and system name. I felt that I could put down the feelings of the development team well.

Asked about EOS M and EOS R and how they fit in the Canon lineup (Google translated)
That’s right. Since EOS R is a...

Canon Financials for Q3 2018. Sales down, outlook good.

Last week Canon released their financials for Q3 of 2018, and it wasn’t the best of quarters for the company. Canon claims that sales were lower than expected as consumers were waiting for Canon’s full frame mirrorless announcement before purchasing other cameras and lenses.
Additionally, the successive announcements made by manufacturers, including Canon, of entering the full-frame mirrorless camera market has led to temporary restrained buying of advanced-amateur models. Compared to the same period last year, during which we launched two new models, our sales declined by 22.4% in the third quarter.
There are some positives, as the Canon EOS M50 continues to be a great seller for Canon and the EOS M lineup.

…… By introducing new products such as the EOS M50, which also realizes user-friendly operation, even for people that are just getting into photography, we continue to post solid results, successfully capturing first-time users of interchangeable-lens cameras.

Real world review: Canon EOS R by Fro

Jared Polin has completed his real world review of the Canon EOS R, you can view the 48-minute review above.
For a stills camera, it appears to be a fantastic camera from Canon. Jared thinks you should definitely choose the EOS R over the Canon EOS 6D Mark II and he makes a pretty good argument to choose the EOS R over the EOS 5D Mark IV.
On the video side of things, we know it’s definitely nowhere near as capable as other cameras from Sony, Fuji and Panasonic, but for the casual shooter, it may do just enough.
While it’s not as good as the Sony A7 III, Canon appears to have done a fantastic job on their first iteration of the EOS R system. Mix with that the initial RF mount lens releases, and you really have a compelling system to think about when purchasing a full frame mirrorless camera.

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III should arrive in early 2019

The most sought-after PowerShot camera, the G7 X series will finally see a mark III version in very early 2019. It’s possible we’ll see the camera come by CES 2019 in January.
We’re told the focus of the camera will definitely be as a premium compact image taker as well as for vlogging on a budget.
4K with DPAF will be featured in the camera, along with a new image sensor, slightly longer zoom range and new ergonomics. A detailed spec list has not yet been shown to us.
We’re told that the PowerShot G9 X may also get a replacement at the same time.

Canon 5D Mark IV 2018 Black Friday sales

I wouldn't expect much discounting on the EOS R this soon but if I was in the market for a 5D iv right now, based on what Canon did last yr., I'd probably wait a few weeks for Black Friday promos. Last yr's promo introduced aggressively lower prices and a free grip thrown in to boot. Will be interesting to see what Canon does this yr across all their lines starting on Black Friday. Now, if I just had a pocket full of money!

Canon EOS-R or How Canon Nailed the Entrance into the Mirrorless FullFrame Market

Maybe a bit provocative title of my review of the EOS R. I have it in use since almost 3 weeks now. I am really excited about this camera!

Here is my verdict:

Wow, what a camera... It delivers all what I expected to get. Using the EOS M5 since almost 2 years as my main travel camera I knew that Canon is delivering great gear on the mirrorless side as well. Therefore the R is definitely the next level for my "always with me travel camera"! The great thing is that it delivers those features which I missed mostly on the M5:Better low light performance and more bokeh and that's just related to sensor size. And weather sealing... But unfortunately the first RF-mount lens to come will be the 35mm f1.8 - and this one comes without weather sealing...

The EOS-R is a remarkable camera. Tt can be a work horse for all "normal" needs - and I believe for working professionals as well. I would think it will become a believed camera for travel photographers, who do want to be a bit more discrete and do won't to carry less.

For many topics which are critizised in the online community there are workarounds or solutions built in which are made pretty awesome. But you have to figure them out and maybe to learn how to use them....

I do expect more glass for the RF mount. And the list if the expected glass to come is impressive:
  • Zooms: the holy trinity is more ore less confirmed to come in 2019
    • 16-35mm f2.8
    • 24-70mm f 2.8 - as IS-Lens!
    • 70-200mm f 2.8
    • I do expect a new Super Zoom lens... like the 28-300mm
  • Prime Lenses are rumored to come in late 2019 or early 2020 as well
    • 24 mm f1.2
    • 85mm f 12.
These glimpse of rumors show clearly that Canon is filling up the RF mount with stunning and awesome glass - and I do hope for more consumer grade glass as well...

And therefore: i am happy to have it and to use it in the future....

AF issues with 5Dmk4

I have a friend who upgraded from previously using a 5dmk2 and 5dmk3 in April to the 5dmk4, loves the video focusing and found the sensor a worthwhile upgrade but has been struggling with the AF.

Canon ended up actually replacing the first body with another (af was properly malfunctioning) but with the replacement body, the af is still very inaccurate (although is an improvement on the previous body), with many of the shots seeming to come out soft/misfocused, using the OVF. In every case, the focus point has been directly on someone's eye and the focus seems to be a good few inches to the left and upwards. This was even the case in a newborn session with good consistent light and a completely asleep and still subject.

It seems to be the case for every lens we've tried, afma through the foCal software has helped the Sigma 35mm 1.4, but the tamron 24-70 2.8 g2 is still all over the place, as are the 50mm 1.8 stm and 135mm L.

I tried my 70-200mm f4 IS and 16-35 f4 IS and I consistently have issues with focus too, although these haven't been afma'd.

Live view focusing is excellent, and the lenses all work well on the 2x 6d and the previous 5dmk2/3 cameras. My own lenses (and the sigma) on my Sony a7r3 adapted are excellent.

Has anyone else had similar problems coming from 5dmk2 and mk3 cameras? It's not a case of one bad lens, and this is the first model camera that has given issues with af over a number of years. I would have hoped it was a big improvement but so far the only great thing is the video.

Operating conditions of the Canon “EOS R” and SIGMA’s interchangeable lenses for Canon mount

We would like to announce that, as of this moment SIGMA’s interchangeable lenses for Canon mount in the current lineup do not have any issues with the general operation when they are used on the “EOS R”, released by Canon Inc., via their “Mount Adapter EF-EOS R”.
In addition, please note the information below when using our lenses.
1. With SIGMA’s interchangeable lenses, the Digital Lens Optimizer located within the in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function cannot be used. Therefore, please set the Digital Lens Optimizer to [OFF] before shooting.
When the Digital Lens Optimizer is switched [OFF], but “Peripheral illumination correction”, “Chromatic aberration correction” and “Distortion correction”, located within the in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function is switched [ON], the appropriate corrections can be achieved in accordance with the optical characteristics of each lens. This is applicable to lenses listed below which were released after March, 2018, or those of...

Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM

Picked up the RF 50mm 1.2 yesterday. Here are just a few photos I took. Unfortunately it has been raining here. The lens retains all of the beautiful swirl bokeh of the EF 50 1.2 but adds sharpness like I have never seen on any other lens. And without the mirror box, the circles are not clipped. New favorite lens.

Second 5D Mark IV or a 5DsR

Hello forum members! It's been awhile since I've posted. I'm going to be getting into other areas of photography besides sports, and wanted to see your opinion. I recently took a 5D4 out to shoot sports along with my 1Dx's, and I was blown away by the IQ on the 5D4 vs. the 1Dx. Indoors the IQ wasn't even close. I would like to sell one of my 1Dx's and buy either another 5D4 or a 5DsR. My other question is, does the added DR of the 5D4 outweigh the extra MP of the 5DsR? Thanks in advance!

EOS-R Back Button Focus

Does anybody know how to set Back Button Focus in EOS-R?
It seems that there is no option for "focus and hold" to be assigned to AF-ON or other buttons. The moment I release the AF-ON button and try to re-compose the shot, the camera tries to obtain focus again. Is it normal to keep pushing the AF-ON during recompose? This was not the case with the 5DSR. Am I missing something?

EOS R: GPS

The biggest lack in the EOS R I've seen so far is the lack of a GPS receiver built in in the camera. For "on-the-road" use that's become essential for me over the years.
I understand it would draw even more battery, but it's a price I'd gladly pay, but alas, it's not to be.

So the question here: how well does the link with the phone app canon suggests to use actually work (assuming you use the phone as it is intended and not dedicate it to that task) ? Any practical field experience out there ?

It's to hope one of the upcoming "RF" bodies fixes this (for me) crucial omission.

Let's hope it doesn't become a trend to drop in camera GPS support.

Patent: Canon Image Sensor Stabilization

Sensor stabilization was definitely one of the bigger feature omissions from the Canon EOS R if we go by the feedback we’ve received. Canon has always maintained that in lens stabilization is the best way to go, however, Canon themselves left the door open to the idea that the EOS R system may get sensor stabilization in a future body.
Northlight Images has uncovered a Canon patent showing sensor stabilization.
We think one of the challenges facing image sensor image stabilization from Canon is making it work with lens image stabilization and improving the overall performance.
