Comparison: 113 Different SD Cards in the Canon EOS R, Which is the fastest?

Camera Memory Speed has completed their exhaustive test of 113 SD cards in the brand new Canon EOS R. The UHS-II performance of the camera is quite good, with the max write speed hitting 182MB/s from the Lexar Professional 2000x UHS-II Rev E 64GB.
The methodology behind the testing:
Write speed is determined using the buffer full condition. This begins when the buffer has reached capacity and the camera is unable to sustain the full continuous frame rate. In this condition shooting is limited to the rate at which the buffer is emptied. During the buffer full condition the total data written is known in addition to the time between shots. This method eliminates the need to use the card access light. Because the...

HERE IS A CANON PATENT FOR IN BODY IMAGE STABILISATION (IBIS)

https://www.canonwatch.com/here-is-a-canon-patent-for-in-body-image-stabilisation-ibis/

Japanese site Hi Lows Note spotted the patent of the year.
Canon patent application in Japan 2018-165756 describes an IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) system.
The lack of IBIS was one of the criticism Canon had to face after the launch of the Canon EOS R. There have been various statements by Canon execs about how much better image stabilisation in lens is working. However, no one ever excluded the possibility Canon might feature IBIS on future cameras. At least now we know there is a Canon patent application for it. Interesting note: the picture on top is depicting a DSLR and not a mirrorless camera.
Machine translated excerpt from the patent literature:
The imaging device of the present invention is provided with an image sensor, the frame which supports the aforementioned image sensor, and the driving member which moves the aforementioned frame in the direction parallel to the imaging surface of the aforementioned image sensor, and the aforementioned vibrating member, It has a vibration portion which vibration occurs, it sees from the direction which intersects perpendicularly to the imaging surface of the aforementioned image sensor, and the vibration portion of at least one driving member overlaps the center of the imaging surface of the aforementioned image sensor.

Will Canon make a tilt-shift adapter for all EF lenses for the Canon R?

There was this article in 2015 about such an adapter that was patented by Canon:
http://www.photographybay.com/2015/...-shift-adapter-that-works-with-every-ef-lens/

It summed things by saying that this was likely only going to work with EOS M for various reasons that included the shorter flange distance from the lens to the sensor. Well now we have the R system, does that mean Canon could make a tilt-shift adapter for the new R system? I'm not an engineer, but would like to see this become available and hopefully others do too.

Also, I'd like to see an IS adapter for non IS EF lenses. Why not? If Canon doesn't want IBIS and says Lens IS is superior, why not make an adapter that can add IS. Again, I'm not an engineer and this may sound like a stupid idea for those that know why this won't work, but I think it would be good to have. I personally believe canon is not providing IBIS simply to keep lens prices high to make more profit. IBIS would likely reduce sales of IS lenses.

Some first thoughts and examples from the 5D4

So after years of 5D , 5D2 and 5D3 useage finally pulled the trigger on the 5D4 and have been out and about testing it before the next wedding where it will get a proper workout !

First thoughts , definitely seems to be a better performer in terms of image quality and plenty more detail hiding in the raw files to be messed around with. Silent shutter is not so silent and maybe even slightly louder than the 5D3 but still not bad. Ergonomically feels no different and the layout is almost identical to the 5d3 apart from another couple of programmable buttons to use which is good. Touch screen hasn't come in to its own yet but is much easier for fast zooming during playback. Wireless control via the Canon connect app is good and have a few dark weddings coming up where that will be most useful.

Word of caution - the first 5Dmk4 i was delivered was faulty and was corrupting files , no such issues with this one so far but this is the first time any of my many 5D cameras have had a problem in over a decade.

Anyhow a couple of images to be going on with

EOS R and EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM -lens

Hi, I tested my Canon 100mm macro lens on the new R with the basic adapter, and it seems the IS is running constantly on the lens. I did not notice the same with my other lenses with IS - normal behaviour is that the IS runs when I autofocus etc. Only way to stop the IS is to turn the lens switch to manual focus STABILIZER OFF or turn of the live view in the camera.

Anyone else have similar experiences? Any idea what could cause this behaviour?

Thanks,

Edit: mentioned the wrong lens switch, corrected

Industry News: Leica Camera Debuts the Leica M10-D

The Camera with a Digital Heart and an Analog Soul
October 24, 2018 – Leica Camera transports the analog experience into the world of digital photography with the introduction of the Leica M10-D. The Leica M10-D combines the benefits of a digital M camera with an unprecedented approach to rediscovering the magic of an analog photographic experience, now augmented with mobile connectivity.

The ultimate experiential camera, the Leica M10-D is inspired by the discreet M10-P. In addition to incorporating the M10-P’s signature near-silent mechanical shutter and classic script logo branding on the top plate, the Leica M10-D’s monitor screen has been purposefully omitted from the camera body, freeing photographers from all distractions and allowing them to always focus on capturing the moment, rather than the camera itself. In lieu of the screen on the back of the camera is a new control ring for switching the camera on and off, with a dedicated hardware setting for activating Wi-Fi – a...

Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS to come before EF version [CR2]

We’ve mentioned previously that an RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS will be coming sometime in 2019 for the Canon EOS R system. We’ve also been told that an EF version of such a lens is also in the works.
We’re now told that the RF version of the 24-70mm f/2.8L IS will come ahead of an EF version. Though the source did say that it’s possible the EF version never comes, it may come down to how well the EOS R system cameras are received in 2018 and 2019. We do expect to see an entry-level EOS R camera, as well as a “pro” body.
The EF lens lineup is going to take a backseat to the RF line for the foreseeable future.

85mm: Which one to buy used now to hold value for resale when RF comes out?

Which EF-mount 85mm will have the best resale value in 16-24 months?

  • Canon 85mm f1.2L II

  • Canon 85mm f1.4L IS USM

  • Sigma 85mm f1.4 EX DG HSM (Non-Art)

  • Something Else

  • Don't Buy an 85mm, You've Got the 50mm 1.2 and 24-70 2.0 Coming

Results are only viewable after voting.

I'm a new EOS R owner and loving the camera so far. I'm finding myself craving an 85mm lens for it already and since I'm new to Canon, I don't have a lens portfolio to choose from. I have the Canon adapter so I can use EF lenses no problem, but I don't want to do so long-term knowing there's likely an RF 85mm in the pipeline before too long.

I'm debating the following:
  • Do I purchase a used 85mm f1.2 locally from a Craiglist seller for around $1k and use it until the RF version comes out sometime in 2019 or 2020?
  • Or do I buy a new specimen of the 85mm f1.4 IS and take the depreciation hit selling that when I inevitably get the RF version? I haven't seen any used samples of this lens floating around at enough of a discount to make it make sense...even on eBay they're going for around $1400.
  • Or do I get a used version of the Sigma 85mm f1.4 EX DG HSM (non-Art series) for around $650?
  • Or are there other options I should be looking at?
Thanks!

To IBIS or Not To IBIS

A lot of ML cameras incorporate IBIS. I can see the advantage to this - build IS into the body and you don't have to build it into the lens.

Overall, from the little I have read both in lens and in body IS work well - not sure if one has an advantage over the other. if there is an advantage, I don't think it will be large (at least based on my reading thus far).

Given the number of lens with IS I am not surprised that Canon opted not to have IBIS. And Nikon with VR in a wide variety of their lens, did opt to build IBIS into the Z6 and Z7.

Thoughts?

EOS R exposure compensation and metering

I just noticed that the exposure compensation on the EOS R seems to be limited to +/- 3 stops. I know the situations where you would really want to go beyond either of those limits is rare, but I'm a little disappointed as you can push the exposure compensation right off the end of the scale that's shown and keep going if you really want to on the 5D4.

Also, is it just me, or is even the evaluative metering mode on the EOS R weighted to where the focus point is? I know we have wanted this feature for a long time, but it doesn't appear that there's any way to turn this on or off. It seems to always weight the exposure based on how bright it is where the focus point is.

CarePAK PLUS "Penalty" to Early Buyers of EOS R

I've been a loyal Canon USA supporter for 30 years (still have my 1988 EOS 650). My first day order arrived October 11th and I am happy!

Canon USA has a new program for free CarePAK Plus for EOS R buyers after October 21st...
Sorry early adopters. You are screwed out of the $200.99 promotion! No "thank you" coming from Canon USA.

So I thought that being so loyal, and a member of CPS, I might appeal to their kind hearts. So I asked:
"RE: FREE CarePAK PLUS (13-Month) Extended Service Plan
With 30 years of Canon EOS ownership and a happy CPS member, Canon should consider extending this free CarePAK PLUS to all buyers of the EOS R system. Mine finally arrived October 11th -- a mere ten days before this program became effective. Is there someone with whom I could discuss this or will Canon Marketing appreciate first day order supporters? "

I received a very nice reply that, unfortunately, left me still with a sour taste:
"I spoke to Supervisor in the Sales Department regarding your request. I regret an exception can not be applied for this promotion. I realize this is disappointing.
If you wish to purchase a CarePAK PLUS for your EOS R, please visit the Service Plan website at:
https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/carepak-plus"

I have politely replied "I guess that early adopters get penalized $200.99 for having such great confidence to pre-order before the reviews are published."

Your thoughts? Is there someone to whom we could share our feelings?

Canon 5Dmk4 RAW file viewing codecs ?

Hi , has anyone found a codec yet which supports the 5D4 showing images in windows as the previous 5Ds all did , there is no new update for Microsofts Camera Coded pack and FastpictureViewer does not support the 5d4 according to docs ? anyone had any luck ? I can use DPP Lightroom etc but really like the ease and speed of using windows folders for initial browsing and moving of files.

Canon RF 24mm f/1.2L & RF 85mm f/1.2L in the works [CR1]

We’re told that beyond new f/2.8 RF zoom lenses, that Canon is working on two new L prime lenses, an RF 24mm f/1.2L USM and an RF 85mm f/1.2L for release in late 2019 or early 2020.
The Canon EOS R system launched with two primes, the RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro and the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM.
We find the RF 24mm f/1.2L an interesting choice for the lineup, especially with the speed of the lens. We wonder if a fast 35mm f/1.2L would be more popular. The 85mm f/1.2L for the RF mount would be a no-brainer.
More to come…

Canon engineers talk EOS R and the future of the system

DPReview had a chance to talk to the folks from the Canon EOS R development team. They spoke with someone from each of the main parts of development, someone from physical design, optical design, UI design and the product design team. Apparently, the design team was given more freedom for the EOS R system, than any previous Canon camera project.

There were obviously design decisions that are new to a Canon EOS camera, and one of them is the lack of a mode dial.
Trying to accommodate the needs of video shooters ended up leading the removal of the camera’s mode dial, says Koji Yoshida: “if you have a mode dial then the [exposure] settings will be the same for both stills and movies.”
“We consulted with a lot of different people and talked about this a lot, and decided to have different settings this time,” he says. But it’s clear this isn’t a decision made...

Great Whites to EOS R: AF, AF-Tracking

Any indepth impressions? I have a 300mm F2.8 and 200 F2 IS, which are vital to me. Tony Northrup was not very pleased with telephoto performance of the EOS R coupled to anything larger than 300mm (apparently 600mm was unusable). Reviewers in general are rather down on this camera anyway.

Any impressions from Canon Rumors for AF and AF Tracking with the high power telephotos ?

Matt Granger Nikon Z7 review

I haven't watched all of it but I watched part of Matt Granger's Z7 review and I thought it was quite interesting to hear his views about what Nikon got right and wrong ... and compare that to what I've been reading about what Canon got right and wrong with the EOS R.

https://mattgranger.com/gear-talk/item/1150-nikon-z7-fantastic-but-flawed

From memory, his summary starts at about the 19 min mark.

Photokina 2018 - A walk on photokina and some nice shooting experience with some awesome lenses - For Canon as well as µ43...

As usual I joined Photokina 2018. I took 3 Cameras with me to get some experience of lenses I haven't checked -and to get a better feeling for lenses I have not used so far...

What had been the best experiences

  • The EOS-M 32mm f1.4 Great bokeh... great lens
  • The Tamron 28-300mm super Zoom - really stunning in image quality for price and size...
  • the new Autofocus Samyang 14mm f2.8
  • And I have to say the Sigma ART are better than expected - while knowing they are good...
More of that you will find in my detailed review if you like...
