R Adaptor with variable ND Filter

Sorry if I've missed it in the deluge of info, but has anyone seen further details about the EOS R to EF adaptor with the variable ND filter. I can see it for pre-order on a few sites but details are sketchy. For instance, what range of stops does the variable ND offer? Will third parties be able to make filters for it?
I shoot with a 5DSR at the moment and I'm no rush to move to mirrorless but I think this is a genius idea. ND filters that could be used with the 11-24 without having to carry a massive adaptor and dinner plate sized filters would be superb.

Nikon Nikkor AF-S 500 mm f/5.6E PF ED VR First review

Lenstip has reviewed a copy https://www.lenstip.com/index.php?test=obiektywu&test_ob=540
Its resolution is comparable to the the 400mm DO II ± 1.4xTC. The AF is slower, both measured here and from other reports on the net. Some good images have been posted by someone who got an early copy https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/61650731, http://www.pbase.com/lance_b/nikon_500_56pf
Clearly more plasticky but the lens is light. OK Canon, let us have something similar!

Here's the manual for the EOS R!

Here's the full manual to download. EOS R pdf

I'm very happy reading through this for many reasons, so I'll just post the ONE thing I have an issue with;

Why is it not possible to remove unused shooting modes?

I can choose what to display in the VF with great customization and pick and choose what to hide in basically all other aspects in Play and Shooting mode.
Can anyone provide me with a link to where I can let Canon know this is a function I would very much like.

Shutter Life on a 5D Mark III

Would you buy a used Canon 5D Mark III with a shutter count of 190k for about $1000(canadian dollars), body only, plus battery ?

The body, appears well taken care of and everything looks good. It was used professionally by one owner since new.

I'm wanting to upgrade from crop to full frame and the EF lens line. But given that the shutter is only rated for 150K, I'm not sure about this one. My budget doesn't allow for much more for the body, as I will still need to buy at least one EF lens to start.

Odds of us seeing a G7X II Successor this year?

I've been holding out on getting another point and shoot ever since we got that rumored spec sheet a few months back. The M50 is plenty portable, but sometimes I need to pack even lighter and I've been waiting for them to drop that G7X Mark III announcement, but I haven't heard/seen anything since. To my knowledge, there are 2 big camera events left this year, and I'm on the verge of being forced (1st world problem) to pick up the G1X MKIII, which isn't as pocketable as my old G7X II was, though the weather-sealing is a plus. Completely unfamiliar with release cycles and the like, and it seems like they already have a DPAF capable 1-inch sensor on the market, so what can we expect based on their history?

Don't need the 4K but the DPAF is something I'd rather not miss out on by picking up another G7X II while waiting if it can be avoided.

Next Canon FF sensor

I read the article referenced in a couple of different threads about the sensor business, the one from Germany. I’m sure most here have read it too. Very interesting.

If true, then Canon will likely be behind Sony in sensor tech for some time.

Having said that, the 5D4 sensor is pretty good IMHO and even on DXO it is really not that far behind.

The sensor in the R looks like the 5d4 sensor in what sure looks like a “6DR”. Coupled with the comments by a Canon exec in another thread here, I wonder if Canon has a new generation hi-res sensor in the works and if that means the next R is a “5DsrR”?

If so, we might even see it in a DSLR AND an R body.

I’m just waiting for either one, but the R sure looks tempting. The only two things stopping me from ordering one right now are the fact that IQ is the same as my 5d4’s and the fact that I need 5d level of weather resistance.

Hopefully the next R is announced fairly soon so we know where they’re going. Since we know Canon is in the FF ML game, they really have nothing to lose by making their roadmap at least a little clear..

Amazon seems to think the EOS R will come out on October 9

Ok, I guess everywhere seems to be quoting dates close to this now, so no big secret.

I'm surprised nobody has noticed this yet, or maybe they have and everyone but me knows that it's not worth paying attention to. Amazon's preorder for the EOS R currently states "This item will be released on October 9, 2018." What does everyone make of this? Are they just pulling a date out of their ass? Everything I've heard is a vague "late October."

Also, something that's a little odd, I can't seem to find the EOS R on their site by searching within the site, only by googling it.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H484HLT/?tag=canorumo-20

Edit: Something else to note... The release date that they quote changes if you choose a camera package that comes with a lens... Choosing the 50mm says it will not be released until October 25. Choosing the 35mm and the 28-70 say they will not be released until December 20. These dates seem oddly specific and very spread out to be something they just randomly came up with... I dunno.

Gear update dilemma

Confusing times. I have been updating my DSLR within days of it being launched. This has worked well for me as I get good price for my used gear and the difference to update is not much.
With mirrorless coming which will take over anytime now, I am so confused if I should update immediately. The introduced mirrorless has advantages but my 1dx2 and 5d4 are better at almost everything that matter to me.
I know if I do not sell my DSLR's now, their prices will keep falling. I guess I will not update in near future. Will run my DSLR for next 10 years and only then update to mirrorless which would have evolved perfectly by then.
The DSLR's by then will be worthless in market so I would keep them as memory... Does anyone else feel the same? What is the approach you taking?

First look: Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Image Quality

The-Digital-Picture has done a quick image quality comparison between the brand new Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM. The image quality of the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM looks astonishing and blows away its EF counterpart.
The new RF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a big jump in price, but it looks like it may be worth it.

Question on RF 24-105 vs EF 24-105 II, adapters and on BG-22

Hi Guys!
Some questions on the new stuff from Canon.
  • Do you know, if the RF version of the 24-105 is optically better than the EF II version? Should I sell the EF 24-105 II and fetch the RF version?
  • Do you know, if I can use the 52mm polarizer from my 500mm II in the drop in filter of the variable ND-Filter? (If I buy the expensive variable ND), or is the filterholder sold seperatly too?
  • The BG-E22 ist quite pricy () 329 Euros. Much more than the 5D Mark IV Batterygrip. Does it offer something additional, besides the grip/buttons and the second battery?
Thank you a lot

Daniela

EOS R first impressions - post your hands-on impressions here

Yesterday I attended a local Canon EOS R presentation.

If you are interested, here are my first impressions, I won't repeat usual things covered elsewhere. I'm heavy manual focus lenses user (Zeiss ZE serie), so I focused on some niche details. For about 3 years I use first A7 as my travel camera next to my 1DsIII and 1DIV. For small lenses I actually prefer the first generation Sony bodies, over II and III.

On the positive side:
  • I've been told (by Canon representative), that the updated firmware with Eye-AF with Servo AF and silent shutter in burst mode will be released in February 2019
  • the ergonomics of body is superb, much better than newer Sony bodies, especially with big lenses. Even with the mighty RF 1.2/50L and adapted 1.4/35L and 1.4/85L, it feels very comfortable in my hand (I'm used to 1D bodies). There is enough place too for my little finger on the body grip. There is enough space between lens and fingers too.
  • to me the body aesthetics refers to original EOS 600 series, it was even indirectly emphasized in few slides
  • there is basically no EFV blackout with silent shutter
  • the EF-R adapter is built very well, no wobbling and no play between body and lens. EF lenses feel really like native lenses.
  • control ring on adapter is really nice idea and...wait for it... INNOVATIVE ;)
  • AF with my old 1.4/35L was fast, snappy and always spot on at f/1.4, same with 1.4/85L and RF 1.2/50
  • the button customization looks endless in comparison to my 1D bodies
For MF lenses use:
  • focus peaking is much finer and looks usable even at wide apertures in comparison to Sony implementation
  • the focus assist is GENIUS! I was able to focus with Planar 1.4/85ZE wide open precisely on eye WITHOUT zooming in! And the focus was always spot on. Well I call this ...wait for it... INNOVATIVE o_O
  • it is now possible to map the zoom function to any button (it was not possible with EOS M and M3 - only via touch scrreen), I have no experience with newer Ms)
On the negative side:
  • the battery grip is ...umm... just another Canon non-1D battery grip, they could do better
  • AF point selection with thumb on touch screen doesn't work very well. It's nice with small body (I tested it on M50 at same event), but on bigger R I can't reach the display with thumb without removing my index finger from shutter button and losing grip  And I don't have small hands, I'm perfectly fine with 1D bodies....
  • ^^^^Canon, can I please get the prototype where instead of the F-word touch strip is plain old joystick? The strip operation was little clumsy and I have bad feeling, that in real world use, there will be lot of accidental "touches". But it's a perfect place for joystick!
  • the On/Off only wheel on left side is little waste of space, it could do something more useful...
Neutral:
  • as I don't do VLOGging and video, I'm not sure about the swivel screen... It's nice, that it allows more angles, but for most use (shots from low perspective) the tilting screen is faster to operate and "safer" because you just "clamp" the screen back to body.
I forgot:
  • test sensor flares - this is the biggest flaw of first A7
  • try to setup AF point selection with FOCUS button tap + scroll wheels - like on my 1DIV
Well overall I'm pleased, I was looking for some time to upgrade my 1DsIII, but the 5D path was not for me, as I was spoiled by ease of use of my Zeiss ZE lenses with mirrorless A7. Looks like R will be my next camera :)
