Fuji's next Medium Format "more affordable"

It's been rumored that Fuji's rangefinder-style medium format offering, expected (announcement) sometime around Photokina will be a bit less expensive than the present GFX model.

Fujirumors GFX50R story

How much cheaper it can sell for will be interesting in the suddenly expanding market of full-frame mirrorless bodies.
Will it be considered anywhere near competitive, even if we don't consider the high price of Fuji's very good glass?

Industry News: Here’s the first image of Fuji’s “affordable” medium format camera

FujiAddict has released the first leaked image of the upcoming “affordable” medium format camera from Fuji, the GFX 50R.
The Fujifilm GFX 50R is scheduled to be announced on or around September 23, 2018, a few days before Photokina.
The rumored price is between $3900 – $4300 USD, which would be extremely aggressive pricing for a medium format system.

A size comparison between the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS and RF 28-70mm f/2L

Canon Rumors reader Ivan sent in a mockup that shows the size difference between the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS and the revolutionary RF 28-70 f/2L. The latter is definitely going to be a big lens, but maybe not as big as we originally thought.
The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS has the following measurements:

Size: Approximately 83mm (3.26 inches) x 107mm (4.2 inches)

Compared to the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II 83mm (3.26 inches) x 118mm (4.64 inches)

Weight: Approximately 698g (1.5lbs)

Compared to the EF 105mm f/4L IS II 795g (1.75lbs)

As with any mockup such as this, it may not be 100% accurate.

Lensrentals.com does a teardown of the new Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM, compares it to version II

Lensrentals.com has completed a teardown of the brand new Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III and compares it to the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. They discovered that there really isn’t any difference between the two in how they’re built.
From Lensrentals.com
Well, as Canon stated, there is no difference between the Mk II and Mk III versions. If you think there’s an optical or performance difference, please contact me about some Tennessee Beach-front property I have for sale. If you’re in the market for one of these in the near future, I’d snap up a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II at discount price if you can find it.
If you really like the new color do what we do for touchup paint: take the tripod ring...

Should I purchase a 300mm f/2.8 is I for wildlife???

Hi all,
I have an opportunity to purchase a Canon 300mm f/2.8 is I in the next couple of days. The seller is a local photographer who has fallen on hard times and is looking to sell some gear to get money for a car. He is asking $2500 for it, it seems to be in fairly good condition from the pictures. From all the reviews and such that I have read I understand that this lens is basically legendary for its IQ. Though I understand that there is an second version of this lens but I never really considered this lens do to the cost to purchase new. I would mainly use this lens for wildlife. My current wildlife setup is a 7dmkii with the tamron 150-600mm g1. I have never really been all that happy with the tamrons focusing and sharpness and have almost never used it at the short end. First question, is that a reasonable price for this lens? I know conditions vary and all that but he has all the accessories and it seems good to go from the pics (though I would of course make sure everything was good before purchasing). And my second question is for people that have used this lens with the 1.4x and 2X extenders. I have both and would be using them both frequently to get the reach I’m used to with the Tamron. Would the tamron be better at 600mm or the 300mm with the 2X? From where I sit it looks to me like this would give me a fantastic 300mm, a really good 420mm f4 with the 1.4 and pretty good 600mm with the 2X? From evaluating the way that I shoot, I see a trend of a lot of my wildlife pictures being either in the 300mm range or the 600mm range. I have through the weekend to decide.
Thanks
Matthew Harwood

News Flash: Good news for some, bad news for others

Nokishita has updated their information and included information on the mount. It does indeed appear that the RF mount is a shorter registration than the EF mount, and it requires an adapter to use EF lenses.
That is sure to please some that want to adapt lenses to the RF mount, and will disappoint others that were hoping for native EF compatibility as we surmised before.
From Nokishita;
M adapter R was confirmed with “Mount Adapter EF – EOS R”. Three types of mount adapters are available with control ring and drop-in filter.
The ability to use drop-in filters will certainly make this more than just your regular “dumb” adapter and add useful benefit to using EF lenses on an RF mount.

EF 11-24mm L f/4 vs. 16-35mm f/4 L IS vs. 16-35mm f/2.8 L III

I'm in the market for a replacement wide angle landscape lens for the 16-35mm f/2.8 L II I currently have. I generally like the focal range, although I don't terribly often seem to use beyond 24mm. The Mark II version of this lens has pretty poor corner performance, and doesn't even really have the best center performance either (which always bugged me, being an L series lens.)

Anyway, the primary use case would be landscapes, however there may also be perspective-oriented stuff as well, utilizing the ultra wide angles to get interesting shots of objects (I like photographing very old rusty farm equipment that is often on display around rural America). This will mostly be used on full frame cameras, and not necessarily just Canon bodies. There may be some astrophotography, however I also have Samyang/Rokinon manual lenses that also fill that role (and to date, I've never seen any other brand that delivers the same kind of corner performance as a Samyang lens...mind blowingly good, small, round, coma-free corner stars with those lenses.) Getting into blue hour photography is also something on my list, which is one of the reasons the f/2.8 lens is on the list.

I am curious to know what other people think about these three lenses. How is the corner performance in particular? Does anyone think 11mm is necessary for wide angle landscapes on FF cameras? One thing in particular is whether any kind of polarization filter use is possible with the 11-24mm. I think it's biggest drawback may be that front element... I had been considering one of the very wide Sigma lenses, however it seems their 12-24mm also has a bulbous front element, and I am not sure there is enough of an IQ improvement over Canon L to justify a different brand.

Industry News: Panasonic to release a full frame camera September 25th

In a surprising rumor from m43rumors, it appears as if Panasonic is entering into the full frame market.
m43rumors suggests:
Word on the street is that Panasonic will show a prototype and the final product will be on market during the first half of 2019.
One of the sources testing the camera said this is “as exciting as the Nikon Z7 announcement“. One went even further and said it’s “more exciting“. But of course, they might got carried away with their emotions so let’s keep our feet on ground. A third source said “video performance is superb“.
No word on whether or not this uses the existing Leica SL mount or if Panasonic as gone their own way and created a brand new mount for it.  There’s a huge potential for this to be a fairly significant release, especially if Panasonic adopts the fundamentals of micro 43’s and makes the mount nonexclusive.
There is no...

Tamron officially announces the SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A041)

August 31, 2018, Commack, New York— Tamron announces the launch of a new high-speed ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, the SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A041), for full-frame DSLR cameras. The new model will be available in Nikon mount on September 21st and in Canon mount October 12th at a suggested retail price of $1299.

With a well-established reputation for ultra-high-quality wideangle zoom lenses with its Model A012, Tamron carries on the tradition of high optical performance with the new SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A041). By incorporating an XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) lens element, as well as multiple LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements, the distortion and lateral chromatic aberrations so common in wideangle shooting have been greatly minimized. Furthermore, a newly developed AX (Anti-reflection eXpand) Coating has been applied to reduce ghosting and flare more thoroughly than ever before. The optical performance in this high-speed F/2.8...

A hypothesis concerning the RF mount

We have received some information from one of our sources that has seen the camera, and described it to us.  He mentioned that EF lenses mounted directly onto the camera body.
We have been told in the past, that this will have a mount with a sexy solution for EF lenses, so we’re going to hypothesize a bit about what we think it just may be based upon some patent applications we have seen recently.
In this patent application, Canon describes a mount that supports two different lens protocols. This is further described in these two patent applications where they discuss switching the lens mount to support two different protocols.
From this information, it’s a working theory that the RF and EF mount will differ slightly and EF lenses will mount on the RF mount and cause it to “switch” to...

Is a Canon RF 24-70mm f/2 launching with the EOS R?

*Update* It has been confirmed that the Canon EOS R will launch with an RF 28-70mm f/2L lens, and not a RF 24-70mm f/2.
As we mentioned yesterday, we’re not going to be rating any rumors regarding the EOS R and we’ll be publishing pretty much everything that sounds possible.
We’re told that Canon will announce an RF 24-70mm f/2 lens with the EOS R body. The same source says the lens employs a “new lens design”, but gave no specifics.
A 24-70mm f/2 would obviously be a very large lens using conventional lens design, so we’re not sure what Canon could change to reduce the size of the lens.
The same source also mentioned that the EOS R will only have one SD card slot.
As for the RF 24-70mm f/2, I’d be quite shocked if such a lens was in the pipeline.

Is the new Canon full frame mirrorless called the EOS R?

Since yesterday’s post, we’ve been getting a lot of information from unknown sources. I’m going to just post them all here without a rumor rating and you can do what you’d like with this information.
Canon EOS R Information:

RF Mount (New mount, possible EF compatibility?)
No reports of new “RF” lenses being announced alongside the body.
Similar ergonomics to the EOS M50
Slightly larger body than the EOS M50
Will compete with the Sony A7 III & Nikon Z6
24mp or 28mp (Two different reports)
Announcement September 5, 2018

As I mentioned, I won’t be rating any of this information going forward. We only have one more week to wait to wait for the reveal.

ImagingResource - an interview with Nikon

An interesting article that discusses design decisions with Nikon reps.

https://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2018/08/28/nikon-z7-engineer-interview-deep-dive-q

One interesting part that stuck out for me was :
it does seem that the Z7 loses a significant amount of its low-light AF ability when shooting with lenses slower than f/2. Whether this is a limitation of its PDAF system or an overall limitation of the Z7's hybrid AF system is unclear.

Maybe that was why the new NOCT lens is not AF?
