New 50mm lens coming alongside a high end mirrorless camera [CR1]

We’re told that a new 50mm lens from Canon will be announced alongside a “high end” mirrorless camera, which like means a Canon full frame mirrorless camera.  We weren’t told when we could expect such an announcement.
A few more people have told us that Canon has an EF mount mirrorless camera on the horizon and a new 50mm f/1.4 would fit nicely with such a release. As it would be smaller and lightweight and would suit both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.
It was also mentioned that a new EF 50mm f/1.2L could be announced at the same time, as there are working prototypes out there.
A new Canon 50mm lens is definitely some kind of rumors unicorn and until we see one with our own eyes, all rumors on the topic will be rated [CR1]

Triggering my 600EX-RT?

I'm using a 5DM3 and a 600EX-RT. I want to be able to wireless trigger the 600EX-RT and I am able to do so by taking the PocketWizard receiver off of my monolight and putting it on the 600EX-RT. However, I'd like a way to trigger it without having to always connect/reconnect the PocketWizard. From what I've read, the 600EX-RT can be wirelessly triggered if I buy some unit for the 5DM3 that connects to the hotshoe. Before I spend more money buying the device, I want to make sure I'm making the best choice for the long term. I may also upgrade to a different camera at some point, a 5DM4, possibly a Sony, who knows....I'm currently using just the 600EX-RT, though I plan to use a 580EX II and a 550EX as a second light, and backlight in the future, though I have not yet figured out how I will be connecting them.

1. Instead of buying the device that goes on my hotshoe (that I'm guessing will only work with the 5DM3) to trigger the flash should I just buy another PocketWizard receiver to connect to the flash so it can be more compatible with other devices in the future if I change cameras? Are there pros/cons to this approach?

2. Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Any harm to the camera by using a 5DIV for prolonged video streaming?

I've recently started using a 5DIV for very prolonged sessions of live video streaming. I'm streaming at 1080 resolution, and feeding that video out of the camera via USB to a laptop where it gets streamed from there.

My question is, is there any detriment to the camera just leaving it turned on and in video mode for long periods of time, frequently? I'm talking like eight hours at a time, once a day. The focus is fixed, so it's not like I'm wearing out a lens focusing motor or anything. The camera doesn't seem to get warm or anything, so I think I'm good. The only detriment I can imagine is that I might get a little more sensor dust since the shutter is hung open so much of the time.

Somebody else must subject these things to heavy video use, right? It was made for this, right??

Mirrorless cameras

With the introduction of two new full frame mirrorless cameras I am convinced that Canon does not intend to be a serious player in this market. Sony, Fuji and now Nikon are blowing Canon away. We should have known Canon would not be a player in this evolving market given its lackluster development of the cropped sensor M series. Decent bodies with a few 6.3 aperture kit zoom lenses and one prime pancake lens. After five years there are rumors about that Canon is developing a 1.4 50 mm prime lens. Wow, isn't that sensational. Once I get too hold to lug around my Canon 5d4 and 7D mk2 I am going mirrorless with Nikon or Sony

Death of DSLR?

With Nikon launching it's mirrorless and Canon to follow soon, it seems like to me - maybe I am not the only one, that soon mirror slappers will soon belong in museums and studios of obstinate photographers.

Reason for this thinking: Neither of these companies would make mirrorless cameras unless they thought they would be better then older technology. Simple.

Waterproof camera options?

My family is considering a lot of kayaking and some snorkeling on the next vacation (southern FL), so I'm considering specific for this purpose. I'm looking at the Olympus Tough TG-5, but I'm not thrilled about the size of the 1/2.3" sensor, when I'm used to FF. Or would it make more sense to get something like the G7XII (1" sensor) and get a waterproof case for it? Or something like a DiCAPac for the EOS-M (I can see this being the cheapest and worst ergonomic option)? Or is it worth getting something like a nimar water sports housing for the 5DIV with a lens port (it looks big and clunky and unwieldy)?

Max output size is expected to be 12"x12" (photobook). Any suggestions and comments on similar experience would be greatly appreciated!

SIZE?

Currently Canon mirrorless(crop) cameras the measure M5 4.6x3.5x2.4 & M50 4.6x3.5x2.3. While I know neither of these fully or not even near pro level camera(s) resepectively with a 20% size increase the sizes are 5.52x4.2x2.76 for the M50 and 5.52x4.2x2.88 for the M5 so the slightly larger than the Z6 & Z7 at 5.3x4x2.7 foth Cameras. So I am sure Canon can bring improvements to equal or even surpass Nikon but not sure about matching Sony current models.
What does everyone think and when do you all think will be brought out by Canon?

Nikon has advantage of being #2

As #2 Nikon can afford to be bold with their new products. Look at the Z7, it competes with the D850. They are not afraid to have the Z7 steal business from the D850. Plus the Z7 will steal business from Canon.

Canon on the other hand protects their products from each. They provide clear points of difference between each body. I wonder what they will do with the new ML? Will it compete (and exceed) the 5D M4 or 5DSR? Or will they cripple the camera is some critical way.

I think has made some great products but currently they are too conservative. They seem afraid that a new product will eat an existing products lunch. Well if theIr ML products are too cripple to product the 5D M4, 5DSR or 1Dx M2, they will fail. And to some extend Nikon will steal business from Canon.

So what is this. A plea to Canon, do your best. If the Z7 can shot 45.7MP at 9 FPS, then the next generation of 1DX or D6 should be able to shoot 30 MP at 12 FPS. Go for it.

Patent: Full frame f/2 zoom, possibly for mirrorless?

A patent application showing an unusual f/2 zoom from Canon has appeared in Japan (Patent application: 2018-132675). It’s possible that this zoom lens is related to a  mirrorless camera body with its short BF distance.
Canon News tells us that the patent itself deals with a floating focus system to help reduce the size of the lens.

Patent: Refined fully articulating screen

A patent showing a refined fully articulating screen for cameras has appeared at the Japan patent office (Patent application: 2018-133632).
This patent actually looks at changing the backlight intensity of the LCD depending on how the articulating screen is positioned.
The second part of this patent application looks at how to make the hinge that operates the articulating screen smaller. The engineering required for these hinges is quite complicated.

From Japan patent application 2018-133632:
Also when the surface where an illuminance detection sensor is arranged when the display device combined with the rotatable biaxial hinge is operated differs from the surface which the display device has turned to largely, an illuminance detection sensor will be interlocked with, and the brilliance control of a display device will be controlled by a prior art. that is, a luminance change of an unsuitable display device (TFT) is made — like — problem occurs. When the illuminance sensor...

The 6D series camera

Hi there , My name’s Morona

The 6D series camera does not have a joystick for focus point selection. However, the combo of the top dial and back dial can be used to quickly move the point around. Top dial does left and right, back dial does up and down.

However, the direction for the back dial seems backwards/unintuitive to me. Clockwise moves the point down and counterclockwise moves it up. It feels naturally wrong to me. Is there a way to switch this in the camera? I dug around briefly and didn't see anything สมัครufabet
Thank you

Today i officially felt left behind with being a Canon shooter

Hi There
I'm a Canon shooter since ages and no - Canon is not doomed ;-) I have a number of professional bodies from Canon and a lot of L lenses and also recently purchased a m50.
I also have to say i still love the Canon lenses, the ergonomics of the bodies, DPAF (well i don't do a lot of video other than just for fun) the wifi implementation - the last 2 sucks on Nikon or are just not existent.
Also for various reasons until very lately i would never consider to move on to Sony (ergonomics,lenses,....) and thanks to Nikon with the z6/z7 i now dont need to think about switching to Sony anyway. ( i would rather switch to NIkon but i dont want to)
BUT today with the z6/z7 i really feel left behind. Why ?
In the DSLR line of products i think Nikons current models really are ahead compared to the Canon models, the D850 is better than my 5DM4/5DsR (i love my 5Dsr but still ...) , the D500 ist better than the 7DMII (which i owned and i tested the D500) even the D7500 (with some "issues like only 1 card and not grip option) is better than the 80D (i've tested them both - except video AF and Wifi as said before). Only the D5/1DX MII are probably on par.

If i had nothing and wanted a DSLR - i would go for a D850, a APS-C affordable sports camera - i would pick the D500 and a small carry around every day Dslr - the D7500 or even D5600.
And instead i would like to go mirrorless - i would pick the Z6 and a D850 as a combo.

I don't want to change but please Canon respond quickly and do it right in terms of features and price. Please. Give us a great FF mirrorless that has 2 card slots and eye-AF , a great sensor and a good EF adapater and a nice line up of original lenses at the beginning , 10fps, good grip/handling/weather sealed - even steal from z6/z7 body if required ;-) like the battery compatibility between Dslr and mirrorless camera. Also give us a 90D that is better than the rest of the market (and make it without AA filter please) and give us a 5DM5 that is on par or better than the D850. Please. At least tell us when we will get it so i don't have to switch early in 2019. Please.

someone had to do it...5dmk4 vs z7 size comparison...

I noticed no one compared the nikon z7 to the 5d in size. I grabbed a pictures online from the same websites, opened up fusion 360, calibrated the sensor size(only point of reference that should be the same), and lined them up. Looks to me the mount is smaller then the canon ef mount!

This is in no way scientific just a noob with fusion 360 playing around(i design stuff to 3d print).

If I did this correctly I wonder if a medium format sensor can really fit in there!

dang that camera is small!

News: Everything Nikon will roll out later today

Isengard unleashed:
 • The biggest news of course = Nikon FF mirrorless is here: Z6 + Z7 + 3 Z mount lenses (and likely the F mount adaptor) we've been looking at on another thread are dropping tonight.

 • SLR folks get some love: the F mount 500mm Phase Fresnel is getting announced along with the mirrorless system tonight.

 • The 58mm f/0.95 lens in the new Z mount is a real thing (!!!), but possibly might not come out at launch. Might just get announced. No pics of that yet.

Review: Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG ART HSM

Dustin Abbott has completed his extensive review of the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG ART HSM which is available in the Canon EF mount. Nikon shooters have their own native Nikkor 105mm f/1.4, but the only option for Canon is this new Sigma Art series prime.
Buy the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG ART HSM at Adorama
I have yet to get my hands on one of these lenses, but it’s definitely going to find a place in my kit in the near future.
Dustin came away impressed with the Sigma with a few caveats:
Sigma has once again successfully created an extreme optical instrument. Tackling a project like a 105mm lens with a huge maximum aperture of f/1.4 is not for the faint of heart, and yet I see evidence of growing maturation as Sigma manages to get more and more right. There’s no question that the extreme size and weight of the 105 ART will be off-putting to many, but those with a little extra...
