Tamron to Announce New 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di OSD Soon

Tamron is set to announce a new 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di OSD lens for full frame cameras.  The variable aperture should keep the price down against competition.
Optimum image quality coupled with maximum portability
The 17-35mm F/ 2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037) is an ultra-wide-angle lens featuring superb image quality integrated into a compact, lightweight body. The use of specialized glass materials enables comprehensive control of the axial chromatic aberrations conspicuous in ultra-wide-angle lenses. The Model A037 offers a high level of sharpness and contrast comparable to the very best of lenses. From the 35mm standard wide-angle for user-friendly snapshot photography, to the ultra-wide-angle 17mm used for professional landscape photography, this lens can meet a wide variety of your needs and yet still offer amazing portability being only 90mm (3.5 in) in length, 83.6mm in diameter, and just 460g (16.2 oz) in weight. With a Minimum Object Distance (MOD) of only 0.28m (11 in)...

Vignetting on a picture when it shouldnt

Hi, I am hopping someone can help me with this. I recently bought a Canon 5D iv and some lenses along with it. I took a picture of my work today for their website went into lightroom and discovered there was a slight vignette on the photo. Is this normal for the gear the photo was shot with, to my knowledge it shouldn't have done this but I don't know everything lol. Specs for photo: Canon 5D iv with Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens shot at 24mm f/4.0 iso 400 and 1/8000sec.
I have done nothing to the photo in post other than color over the name. Even when I do color correction it is still visible. View attachment Picture-1 ed2.jpg

Industry News: More DJI Mavic 2 Pro Images Leak Ahead of Announcement

We were to have already seen an official announcement for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro drop, as it was originally scheduled to be announced on July 18, 2018. The Full Official Specifications for the Upcoming Canon PowerShot SX740 HS

Nokishita has posted an official Canon PDF showing the full specifications for the upcoming Canon PowerShot SX740 HS.

It would seem pretty obvious an announcement is just around the corner, but it looks like it will be announced on its own as the rest of the Photokina announcements will happen in late August or early September.

See the full specifications here.

Are Canon mirrorless camera's more susceptible to sensor dust ?

A Sony Alpha 7 II owner I know has been having endless problems with sensor dust, he has put it down to there being no mirror shielding his cameras shutter assembly when changing lenses, and the fact that the sensors/shutters in mirrorless cameras are positioned closer to the lens mount.

Are Canon mirrorless camera owners also experiencing a similar increase in sensor dust since switching from traditional DSLR's ? If so this is only likely to get worse with FF mirrorless.

The Updated Canon Rumors Site & Forum Will Launch Sunday Evening (EST)

It has been a long time coming, but the work has been completed on the new Canon Rumors blog and forum. The blog isn’t changing all that much aestically, but it will give a much better mobile experience as it will finally be a fully responsive site. The blog will also work with the new forum a lot more seamlessly.
The bigger change will be the forum, as we’re changing the software that runs it. Your current login and password should work. If you have forgotten your login information, you can reset your password now, or wait until the new site launches. Be sure you have access to the email address attached to your account.
As with any new site and change, there may be some bugs that need to be worked out, but those should be taken care of pretty quickly.
The switchover will start tomorrow at about 8PM EST. The forum will likely be offline for a few hours as the migration takes place.
Thanks!

Mars

Mars is about as close as it ever gets to the earth now, and therefore is about as bright as ti gets. I appears in the sky close to the moon.

So about 1:30 after the moon had got high in the sky, I went out with the telephoto lens to see whether I could take a picture of the two together. I found that while they look close in the sky, I really couldn’t get them in the same picture. If I zoomed in enough to make Mars visible in the picture, I couldn’t get the moon in the frame. And if I zoomed out enough to get both in the frame, Mars was too small a dot to show up.

So I decided I would zoom in to 400mm and see what Mars looked like. While it is a long lens, it is certainly no telescope. But Mars looked like more than just a point of light.

This is the way it showed up in the picture. I did not enhance the color or enlarge anything. This is a 100% crop out of the center of the frame:

I Wonder Who Manufactures Nikon Sensors to Nikon Specifications

In their latest earnings call, the sensor manufacturer Tower Jazz (Tower Semiconductor Ltd.) again talked about working with a "leading DSLR camera supplier":

The specific end markets we are serving in these segments are RF low noise amplifier and switch for mobile application, low voltage power management ICs less than 30 volt, with an industry lowest RDS (on) on figure of merit and associated 65 nanometer logic circuitry benefit and image sensors for multiple end market applications to include machine vision, DSLR, medical X-ray and surveillance.

For mid to long-term accretive market growth, we are progressing well with a leading DSLR camera supplier and have as well begun a second project with this customer, using state-of-the-art stacked wafer technology on 300-millimeter wafers. For this DSLR supplier, the first front side elimination project is progressing according to plan, expecting to ramp the volume production in 2020, while the second stacked wafer based project with industry leading alignment accuracy and associated performance benefits is expected to ramp to volume production a year after.

Full Frame Mirrorless: Sideline or Replacement of dSLR?

From what I've read in this forum and elsewhere online, and heard from camera-club friends, the major drawback to mirrorless at this point is the electronic viewfinder. Either it lags a bit or it just doesn't feel right compared to an optical viewfinder.

Another point against has been ergonomics, the comfort of holding and using the body when various lenses are attached. Some feel Sony's FF mirrorless bodies are too small. (As to this, there was a time when smaller smartphones were being marketed, but as more functions were crammed in, overall size, driven by screens and user demand, began to grow again.)

With consumer feedback, marketing savvy, and clever engineering, the negative aspects of mirrorless will be greatly reduced. Technically, perhaps, an EVF that truly satisfies and wins over longtime dSLR users will be the toughest challenge, but it will be overcome.

Which leads to the question: Do Nikon, Canon, and Sony plan to phase out dSLR's, or are the big three approaching mirrorless with uncertainty? If Canon and Nikon create FF mirrorless that win over the vast majority of professionals and dedicated enthusiasts, what incentive do they have to keep producing dSLRs?

With one or two generations of FF mirrorless winners, dSLR's could be entering the sunset phase of production. This could be as soon as seven years.

Personally, I predict dSLR's might then be going the way of vinyl turntables. Available, but only as a tiny niche product that can't be supported by the big three. (I foresee a time when Canon licenses some dSLR lines to Chinese and Indian manufacturers who can make a small profit off a dwindling volume of sales, dependent in part on used and cheap third-party lenses.)

Perhaps a small quantity of professional bodies, priced very high to be worth producing, would still be sold to a handful of sports photographers, but I think the EVF will soon reach the point where it is superior at tracking action. The market for rugged dSLRs in the hands of journalists is evaporating, as print publications are disappearing, and many news organizations have already dropped staff photographers altogether.

The SLR has been one of the most successful masterpieces of design in any industry, with the first 35mm version appearing back in 1936 in Germany. It has made the amazing leap, with few mechanical changes, from analog to digital. The age of a technology doesn't predict its end, as can be seen with the internal combustion engine, but it does allow time for competing technologies to develop, outperform, and out-sell.

Once the EVF and ergonomics of FF mirrorless are as good or better than what a dSLR offers, why would the big companies keep producing dSLR's? Beyond a tiny subset of photographers who cling emotionally and/or habitually to the familiar, older tech, what would be the market?

1Ds mkiii Burst rate

Quick one. Not having played with any one series bodies, I bought a used 1Ds3 just for the hell of it. The burst frames indicator in the viewfinder shows only "2" regardless of image size (RAW, JPEG of any size). Sure enough 2 shots fire before it slows down to a shot each 2 or 3 seconds. I can find any settings that seem to cause this, and I'm wondering if the buffer is fried.

I'm using a 8 GB Sandisk Extreme III CF card, which works fine on my 5D3.

Everything else seems perfect. Any ideas?

value of a good and clean ef 400mm f/2.8 NON-IS mkII

Hi, everyone!

I just bid on a used 400mm/2.8 NON-IS lens (MKII), I wonder what the value it is? Does anyone have this lens?
There are paint chips cosmetic but the glass appears to be good. It does come with the hard case and hood with a crack, I am going to fix it. I am well aware of the lens is non-serviced.
Can anyone give me a ballpark number so I can bid accordingly? Any input is welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

Lens fungus? Separation?

Hey everybody,
I know this isn't a canon lens, but I've gotten good info from this forum before so I thought I could pick your brains. I just bought a Yashica Mat 124 off of ebay and noticed a funny "smudge" on the rear element. I've taken the rear element out and tried cleaning it, but it seems like it is "inside the lens" possibly where to elements are cemented? Anyway, I was curious what you people thought it was. I took at test roll of film, but it isnt' back from the lab yet. Thanks

Canon Releases 2Q 2018 Results, Claim to Have Captured #1 Mirrorless Marketshare in First Half of 2018 in Japan

Canon has released their financial results for the 2nd quarter of 2018, while there was continued contraction of the ILC market, it did slow for the quarter. The EOS M50 appears to have driven sales in 2Q 2018 and Canon claims they now have the #1 spot for mirrorless marketshare in Japan for the first half of 2018 and continue to increase their marketshare in other markets around the globe.
Total unit sales have fallen in line with Canon’s plan for the first half of 2018, but Canon is lowering revenue projection for the rest of the year. This is in part due to Canon’s current focus on entry level models and attracting new users to the EOS system.
It was worse news for the compact market, as Canon saw a drop of 22% to only 840,000 units for the quarter and have dropped their full year projection for the market.

Patent: Canon Not Closing the Door on In Body Image Stabilization

Northlight has uncovered a patent application concerning improved images stabilization, especially in wider lenses. The patent includes both in lens image stabilization and electronic stabilization.
There is a reference to in body stabilization in this patent as well.
From US Patent 20180213155:
Note that the second image stabilization is not limited to electronic image stabilization, and may be, for example, image stabilization performed by controlling a mechanical movement of the image capturing device, or image stabilization performed by controlling a movable optical element in the camera body
We are asked fairly often if we see IBIS coming to Canon cameras, and I think it’ll happen one day.
