Wrecked another 72" umbrella waiting for this lady after setting up at a local park. Had the stand weighted and all. Tiny puff of wind... broken shaft. :'( All I had to use was a diffusion dome on a Steaklight 360ws.

Anyway, 5D Mark III and EF 135mm f/2L in Coppell, Texas. Sweet girl. I'm very pleased to be out of the Mojave Desert in Nevada for good. :)

How big is the possibility of an 400mm 2.8 III in 2018?

I´d like to buy an 400mm III 2.8, if it will appear on the horizon in 2018.
But how big is the chance?
Back in 2009, I was looking for the MK I version of it, but it was much to heavy.

Sony will announce the 400 2.8 this year, with (rumored) an superfast AF and lightweight.
Would that be an pressure for Canon to compeed, as their 400 2.8 lens is 8 or 9 years old?

Hint about what to expect from Canon's step into full frame mirrorless?

I read the following within this month's CPS Newsletter (UK version at any rate) from an interview with one of its ambassadors, Jasper Doest:

Is there anything that you feel Canon could add to its repertoire, to make a positive difference to your photography?:
"I'm still hoping for a full-frame mirrorless system. Canon's DSLRs are doing an amazing job for me. However, when working with people I notice a Canon EOS-1D X Mark II or even a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens can be intrusive. People don't respond as much to smaller camera systems, which makes it much easier to become a fly on the wall when working on documentary shots."

Article is at : https://www.canon-europe.com/pro/stories/jasper-doest-documentary-wildlife/?utm_source=mc&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=0103-201805N_11052018&utm_content=hq_pro-en_a_1_image1_M1A&utm_id=0103-201805n

I could be too cynical or, alternately, naive, but I always assume Canon writes up articles and posts them to give some aid to its marketing direction. So, given the comment, do we think the full frame mirrorless is bound to be smaller? Not looking to re-open debate on what you want, rather: does this point us in the actual direction?

Industry News: Canon on Reframing the Business to Avoid Further Smartphone Disruption

HTML:
Canon has always been considered a marketing powerhouse and they have remained the number 1 camera manufacturer based on marketshare, and their marketshare is increasing in segments such as mirrorless cameras and lenses.</p>
<p><strong>From Marketing Week:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>…… Bonniface admits the market has been “challenging” but says the general perception is that sales have now “bottomed out”, with markets such as the Netherlands returning to growth last year. CIPA figures back this up, with global shipments up slightly to 25 million last year.</p>
<p>In a declining market, Canon has managed to remain the top digital camera company by market share in key markets including the US, Europe and Japan, according to the company. And it has branched out into new areas of imaging such as cars, machine automation, security and medical. But Bonniface says Canon has only been able to do this because of the “power” of the Canon brand.</p>
<p>…… That brand strength can be seen in consumer perceptions. According to YouGov BrandIndex, Canon comes fourth in a list of 36 ‘computing and home office’ brands with an index score of 23.4 (index being a balance of a range of metrics including value, quality and satisfaction). It is also in the top five for impression, quality, value and recommendation.</p>
<p>And the Reputation Institute has Canon at fourth in its global ranking of brand reputation, with a score of 77.4 putting it behind just Rolex, Lego and Google. <a href="https://www.marketingweek.com/2018/05/11/canon-reframing-disruption/">Read the full article</a></p></blockquote>
<p>Canon will continue its brand re-lauch into the summer as it continues to position itself as one of the great brands of the world.</p>

Question for landscapers

Hi,

I have a question for landscapers.

Consider that I own only 16-35mm and as hobby shooter (no income from photography) the budget is limited.
In the most recent experience, shooting The Dark Hedges, I found out owning only 16-35mm was not enough, I couldn't get a good composition at all with wide open lens on that spot.
Which would you choose as your next lens: 24-70 or 70-200?

Many thanks.

Another EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III Mention [CR2]

HTML:
The announcement for the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II which was <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-ef-70-200mm-f-4l-is-ii-coming-very-soon/">scheduled for this past April</a>, appears to have been delayed. We’re still being told that it is coming “soon”. However, as mentioned preciously, we don’t think this is the last 70-200mm lens coming from Canon in 2018.</p>
<p>We’re being told again that a new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III could be announced in the 2nd half of 2018. We figured Photokina 2018 in September would be a good place to announce it, however it’s always possible that the lens gets announced after the show, like we have seen with previous lenses such as the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II which came a couple of months after Photokina 2014.</p>
<p>A lot of sources are quite coy at the moment, but we’re getting the feeling that the 2nd half of 2018 is going to be an exciting time for Canon announcements.</p>

Review: Rokinon AF 14mm f/2.8 by TDP

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the recently released Rokinon AF 14mm f/2.8 lens. The first autofocus lens from Rokinon for the Canon EF mount.</p>
<p><strong>From The-Digital-Picture:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Rokinon/Samyang’s first auto focus lens for Canon (Sony was already covered), the AF 14mm f/2.8 Lens, jumps right to the top of my all-time Rokinon/Samyang lens favorites list and onto my short list of 14mm favorites.</p>
<p>The size and weight of this lens are such that it is easy to include in the bag even when 14mm is not the primary need. The design is nice. The image quality the Rokinon AF 14 delivers is a big driver for selection and the very reasonable price tag seals the deal. <a href="https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Rokinon-AF-14mm-f-2.8-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

The Sigma mount model is expected to ship in June. The release of the Sony E-Mount version will be announced later.</p>
<p><strong>The First Macro Lens in the Sigma Global Vision Art Line</strong>

Elevating the legendary Sigma 70mm F2.8 EX DG to the Art line, the brand new Sigma 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO Art prioritizes optical performance that defines the Sigma Art line, delivering stunning resolution and incredible clarity, while at the same time offering extremely smooth autofocus performance for a weightier, high-performance lens.</p>
<p>To achieve optimal results at every shooting distance, the lens features an extending, floating, two-group focus mechanism, which minimizes aberration at all focal lengths. In addition, the lens’ optical elements design increases resolution at close shooting distances, allowing for a razor-sharp in-focus area contrasted with a bokeh area free of color streaking.</p>
<p>Other feature highlights include focus-by-wire system featuring newly developed coreless DC motor for comfortable and precise focusing typically required for macro photography; compatibility of the Canon mount lens with the Canon Lens Aberration Correction function; and compatibility with Sigma Electronic Flash Macro EM-140 DG and Sigma Teleconverters.</p>

Well, Here's Another Mirrorless Option for Your Canon Glass

HTML:
The folks at <a href="http://www.hkyongnuo.com/e-detaily.php?ID=433">Yongnuo have posted</a> a Micro Four Thirds camera module with an EF mount for the iPhone on their web site.</p>
<p>There are no specifications as of yet, but <a href="https://www.diyphotography.net/yongnuo-announces-an-odd-micro-four-thirds-camera-module-for-iphones/">DIYPhotography appears to be the first</a> to spot this interesting creation. We’ve seen similar products in the past from the likes of Sony and Olympus, so we’re not sure how successful this attempt is going to be.</p>
<p>Head over to DIYPhotography to read more about the YN43 from Yongnuo.</p>
<p>A Canon Rumors reader has sent us an <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/yn43/id1365322459?mt=8">image from the Apple App Store</a> that seems to suggest this may be a 16.6mp sensor.</p>

Industry News: CMOS Sensor Sales Are at An All-Time High

HTML:
<p>Things are going really well for CMOS sensor makers according to IC Insights.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.icinsights.com/news/bulletins/CMOS-Image-Sensor-Sales-Stay-On-RecordBreaking-Pace/">IC Insights</a> reports: </strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The spread of digital camera applications in vehicles, machine vision, human recognition and security systems, as well as for more powerful camera phones will drive CMOS image sensor sales to an eighth straight record-high level this year with worldwide revenues growing 10% to $13.7 billion, following a 19% surge in 2017.</p>
<p>With the smartphone market maturing, sales growth in CMOS image sensors slowed to 6% in 2016, but strong demand in other imaging applications played a major factor in boosting revenues by 19% to $12.5 billion last year. Sales of CCD and other image sensor technologies fell 2% in 2017 to about $1.6 billion after rising 5% in 2016.</p>
<p>Overall, CMOS image sensors grabbed 89% of total image sensor sales in 2017 compared to 74% in 2012 and 54% in 2007. Unit shipments of CMOS imaging devices represented 81% of total image sensors sold in 2017 compared to 64% in 2012 and 63% in 2007.</p>
<p>In new smartphones, CMOS image sensors are also seeing a new wave of growth with the increase of dual-lens camera systems (using two sensors) for enhanced photography. Cellular camera phones accounted for 62% of CMOS image sensor sales in 2017, but that marketshare is forecast to slip to 45% in 2022. Automotive CMOS image sensors are projected to grow the fastest among major end-use applications through the five-year forecast, rising by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 38.4% to about 15% of total CMOS image sensor sales in 2022 ($2.8 billion) while camera phone-generated revenues are expected to rise by a CAGR of just 2.2% to $8.6 billion that year.</p></blockquote>

The First PowerShot G7 X Mark III Specification List We've Seen [CR1]

HTML:
We’ve been sent what is the first Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III specification breakdown that we’ve seen. We expect to see this camera announced some time in 2018 and Photokina is the obvious time to do it, thought we cannot confirm that’s when it’s coming.</p>
<p><b>Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III Rumoured Specifications:</b></p>
<ul>
<li>24.1mp 1″ CMOS sensor</li>
<li>10fps</li>
<li>DIGIC 8</li>
<li>24-100mm f/1.8-f/2.8 Lens (4.2x Optical Zoom)</li>
<li>3″ Articulating Touchscreen</li>
<li>4K Video at 30fps</li>
<li>1080p Video at 60fps</li>
<li>Built in Wi-Fi, NFC & GPS</li>
<li>Announcement: 2018</li>
<li>No mention about DPAF for 4K video.</li>
</ul>
<p>If you <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/buyers-guide-category/powershot/">check out our Buyer’s Guide</a>, you can see that both the PowerShot G3 X and PowerShot G5 X have been around longer than the PowerShot G7 X Mark II, so we’re not sure what is going on with those two models. We’ve been told that only one “G” series camera is scheduled to be coming in 2018, and we continuously see suggestions that the PowerShot G7 X Mark II will be the next “G” series camera to see a replacement.</p>
<p>The PowerShot G9 X Mark III would likely come in early 2019 ahead of CP+.</p>

Sigma 500mm f4 on 5D mark 4

Hi all,

I am seriously considering buying a Sigma 500mm f4 for use for African wildlife on my 5D4 body. Many recent reviews in the field have said the lens is an equal to it's Nikon and Canon equivalents in all aspects. And to make it more tempting, I can buy it in Australia for $4500.00 USD (due to strong USD, 10% rebate on sales tax) including shipping to Miami, from where I would ship it to my home in Panama. Of course the warranty is only good in Australia :-(

Are there any first hand experiences with this lens? The majority of reviews online are from Nikon users...And I have read Brian's review of it with the focus creep at f8, but the total adjustability with it's dock for focus at 4 different focal lengths and the IS (OS)system seem to be able to over come some of that. Thanks!

<p>Global Shutter means no deformations on recording on movement or recording things in movement. Global Shutter means all sensor readout at the same time, as opposed to Rolling shutter on the sensor is read typically up to down. Global Shutter required higher performance chip (FPGA / ASIC) in order to achieve 8K resolution at a one pass readout. In fact, no other camera company achieved 8K using a global shutter.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/franglobal.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-34939" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/franglobal-728x312.jpg" alt="" width="728" height="312" srcset="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/franglobal-728x312.jpg 728w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/franglobal-768x329.jpg 768w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/franglobal-225x96.jpg 225w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/franglobal-610x262.jpg 610w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/franglobal.jpg 1178w" sizes="(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></a></p>
<p>Sony Venice’s, RED Monstruo or Arri’s uses an advanced optimized Rolling Shutter sensor but as RED say “When working with strobes or fast subjects, this mode reduces partial exposure issues”. the key is “partial”, and this is resolved with Global Shutter.</p>

third party lenses and Canon AF lens groups

Hi all

I recently acquired a 6DII, which as I understand it makes AF points flash in the viewfinder if a lens is using the AF point as a line AF sensor rather than a cross-type AF sensor (p138 of the manual). To my surprise, my Sigma 35 Art and Sigma 50 Art lenses cause all AF points to flash (red). I say to my surprise because I had jumped to the conclusion that a fairly modern wide aperture prime would be in Canon's Group A, even if it is a third party lens (and therefore not officially listed in Group A, of course).

I haven't tested my Sigma 85 EX yet, but I assume it will be the same as the Art lenses.

If the camera is using only a line sensor with the Sigma lenses, that would seem to be a potential explanation for Sigma lenses missing focus sometimes, particularly with off-centre AF points (on the assumption the centre point would still be at least a cross type with a Sigma lens - although maybe that's not right, as even if the centre AF point seems to be flashing on my 6DII). If the centre AF point is working as a cross type (and maybe it's not) but all other AF points are working as line sensors, perhaps it explains why the Sigma lenses seemed to get a reputation for focusing better on a 6D than an 5DIII, ie 6D users probably stuck to the centre point much of the time because the peripheral AF points were line sensors anyway).

Is what I'm seeing normal? Does anyone know what AF group the 35 Art, 50 Art and 85 EX fall into? Has everyone else but me known about this for ages?!? :)

EDIT - It seems I may misunderstand what is going on. Just did a quick test with the 35 Art and I only get the blinking AF points if I try to focus in low light (especially if focusing on a dark coloured object). For example, focusing on a light coloured wall with sun coming through the window I saw no blinking AF points, but when I pointed the camera at a black camera bag sitting on a dark coloured shelf in corner of the room, I get all AF points blinking as soon as I activate AF.

What am I missing?! I will have to investigate further.
