IMHO, there's very little chance they'd wheel this tech out first on a flagship pro rig, I think. Surely they'd prove out tech like this on a less vital product line, like in crop or something, right?

Canon 2Q financials are out. no great surprises.

2Q was down 5% in unit sales from 2017 2Q, however total units sold is around the same as last year

the big surprise was mirrorless growing 70% for the first half of 2017

I truely expect to see canon put alot more muscle behind mirrorless now, it's a serious growth market for them.

The interchangeable-lens camera market continues to recover from the impact of last year’s
earthquake, particularly in developed countries. As such, the pace of market contraction has been
gradually slowing on a global basis. Within this business environment, we sold 1.43 million units in
the second quarter, as we limited the decline to 5%. And for the half, we secured the same level of
unit sales as in the first half of 2016.

In this quarter as well, sales remained strong, particularly for mirrorless cameras. Within this trend,
we grew sales of the EOS M6, a new mirrorless camera that has been highly rated not only for its
high image quality, but also for its compact and lightweight form factor. This camera was designed to
capture demand from people who, for example, are considering a step up to a camera with more
features and better performance. Including this factor, first half unit sales of mirrorless camera grew
more than 70% compared to the same period last year, leading to overall sales growth for
interchangeable-lens cameras.

This also means that canon is outpacing gains this year in mirrorless overall, gaining marketshare.

Canon has sold 2.51 million ILCs so far this year; which probably puts them around 43-46% depending on June's CIPA numbers.

Nikon Rumors has posted images of what appears to be the Nikon D850. Nikon <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/off-brand-nikon-announces-development-of-d850/">recently announced that they were developing the camera</a>, and with press photos already leaking out, it appears the camera is coming sooner than later.</p>
<p>No specifications for the upcoming camera have leaked yet, but that information should start rolling out soon.</p>

5D4 launch had lot of chatter about the dual pixel feature. I myself did some testing with it, and then totally forgot it.

I'm wondering does anyone ever use it anywhere? Has someone found feasible use for it?

Interesting:
"In manual mode you’re forced to go into the main menu or quick menu to access exposure compensation, which is a bit of a faff. It’s possible to reassign a button to exposure compensation from the custom functions menu, but in hindsight I’d have preferred it if Canon had merged it with the ISO button as it does on its EOS 5D-series."

Good news that they made this available in the 6D MK II but was hoping it would work like with the 7D MK II

Agree with Nikon on a design/feature decision (IMHO) the 5D4 got wrong -- a tilty/flippy screen.

We’re still trying to figure out what is coming alongside the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS at the end of August 2017. We’ve seen certification for 3 different SKU’s of lenses made in Malaysia, which has given us some pause.
We’re told by a great source that a “series” of three “high end” lenses is coming in 2017 and they assumed it was the three lenses listed in the certification. Now we’re not so sure if that’s the case strictly because of the manufacturing country. To our knowledge, all “high end” lenses by Canon are made in Japan.
I guess this is a long way of saying that we’re still confident a series of 3 lenses is coming, they may just not be coming with the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS. The lenses in question from the certification could possibly be 3 different colours for the upcoming Canon EOS M20 (name not...

I have recently purchased a Eizo ColorEdge CS2420 monitor which comes precalibrated by the manufacture. I have checked this calibration using the supplied Eizo Color Navigator 6 software and a Spyder 5, and have discovered that both the Adobe RGB and sRGB targets it produces when set at 100cd/m2, 6500K and 2.2 Gamma are approximately 0.25 of a stop darker than it's precalibrated state. Is this normal ?, if not any suggestions on how to improve the calibration target would be appreciated.

I find the built-in time-lapse function in 5D4 handy when the conditions are right, but why just HD and no 4K time-lapse?

The 6D II (which can't shoot 4K movies) has 4K timelapse. What do you think, will Canon add 4K time-lapse in a coming firmware update? A quick look in the 6DII user manual reveals a much better integrated time-lapse function with some usable features that's not available in 5D4. Shouldn't be impossible to get those in a firmware-upgrade for 5D4.

I tend to do something out of habit and somewhat based on the results I've seen in the past, but I wanted to get everyone else's take on it.

When shooting a moving subject, camera set to one shot AF, it feels to me like the AF tends to nail the focus better if I half-press the shutter button, let the AF do its thing, wait for the camera to give me the red confirmation blink, and then immediately press the shutter button fully. This, as opposed to just holding the shutter button down fully right from the start, and trusting the camera to not release the shutter until its determined that it's achieved focus.

It's a subtle difference, but does make somewhat of a difference time-wise when you're trying to fire off a quick shot. Obviously it's going to be faster to just hold the shutter button fully down and let the camera automatically release the shutter as soon as it gets focus, but it's always kind of seemed to me like the camera kind of "rushes" it when I do this, and takes the photo before the focus is quite locked on, resulting in a blurry subject more often.

Has anyone else noticed something like this, or am I just imagining it? My 5D MkIV seems to do this, and as far as I remember, the MkIII felt similarly.

Now, before you reply, let me clarify a few things...

1) Yes, I know you can set the camera to prioritize taking the photo faster, or achieving better focus while sacrificing some shooting speed. I always have it set to prioritize focus. I've still noticed this phenomenon.

2) Please don't chime in with "You should be using AI servo for moving subjects." I've tried it, one shot just works better in the conditions and at the apertures I'm usually taking photos at.

3) This isn't meant to devolve into a discussion of the merits of back button focus. I've tried this too. While I see its advantages, it has never seemed to be quite as fast as having autofocus driven off of the shutter button. If it is for you, that's fine, but it hasn't seemed to be for me.

Hey! I upgraded from a 60D to the 6D mkii. I've never shot in camera HDR before, and I noticed that the HDR images are slightly more zoomed in than the standard images (shot from s tripod). Why is this? My best guess is that it anticipates the overlay images bring slightly different so it has a standard crop from the edges to compensate? Is this normal?

They say in politics to believe none of what you hear and half of what you see. I wonder if that's also true with photography forums.
While enjoying my new 6D and feeling like I'm owning the world with it someone went and posted a whole thing about how inferior it and it's replacement are. My initial reaction was "NONSENSE", but found myself frantically researching Fuji mirrorless cameras and lenses.
Could the 6D hysteria be a diabolical plot to encourage GAS. It got so bad that I was almost about to buy that Fuji camera and their 10-24 and 35mm lenses, got a hold of myself and immediately cleared out my Wish List on DP Review (except, of course, for the 70-300L that'll serve well when visiting the Marine Corps Silent Drill team, my son's upcoming graduation and the like).
The pending doom of my GAS crisis was the upcoming trip to Italy figuring that a mirrorless system would be ideal. If I order quickly enough I'll have time on the plane to learn how the camera works.
But, alas, GAS would thereby take time away from the family. There'll be a fine balancing act on this trip between trying to get a handful of pics suitable for a magazine cover and spending time with my family. My wife's declaration of "Maybe leave the tripod at home?" was a clue.
Cinque Terre, Florence and Lake Como await (actually starting on this ****** Thursday, by the way) and they shall be captured in all their glory with my beloved 6D and 40mm pancake lens only. Not ideal, but with minimal criticism from my wife and kids and I've completely avoided my wife beating the **** out of me for spending money that probably doesn't need to be spent no matter how you cut it.
GAS be damned!!!!!!!!!!!!! (although I did buy a separate CPL for my 40mm lens vs. a step-up ring, but no one needs to know of this). Resistance need not be futile.

I would like to upgrade my rudimentary video skills. The manual that came with my 77D covers only the very basic steps and doesn't even mention some of the video features.

Is there a fairly recent book available on the use of current Canon DSLRs for video? If not, is there online material from Canon that goes into more depth than the owner's manual?

These Rebel-class bodies are getting so complex that they really deserve some organized learning. I can see why a lot of them get returned by novice users and recycled into the Canon Refurbished program.

Yeah! Today I got the newest Member ob the Milvus Lens family from Zeiss for reviewing.... The first feeling is ... just another Milvus... (Having 3 Milvus Lenses ist the best thing to say about!!!!) It feels just awesome.

But unlike the 85 and the 50f1.4 the 35mm has strong competition:the Canon 35mm f1.4 IS USMII which is just an awesome Lens.

I will do a real world comparison - pretty soon! And this review will include the EF 35mm f2.0 IS USM as well... a real world 3 lens comparison....

<p>The imaging and optical product maker first upgraded its profit outlook in April, but will likely do so again since its current performance is ahead of its 270 billion yen estimate. Sales are also expected to top the company’s 4.02 trillion yen forecast, climbing 20% to nearly 4.1 trillion yen. The Tokyo-based company follows U.S. accounting standards.</p>

Hello, everyone. Tamron Canada got me a retail copy of the new Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 VC HLD lens to review, and I've got my conclusions here:

It seems to me that Tamron did what they needed to with this lens. It will market very well due to the specs, but I also didn’t see any area where the lens regressed compared to earlier lenses with smaller zoom ratios. As someone whose lens kit is primarily made up of prime lenses, this kind of lens doesn't personally set me on fire, but it's a very competent lens for those looking for a travel lens with a huge zoom range.

P.S. For those interested, I have just started reviewing the Sigma 24-70 ART, so stay posted for that. I'm releasing the Zeiss Milvus 35mm f/1.4 review next week along with the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS review the week following. I've also (due to a LOT of requests) added a Sony a6500 to my personal kit and am about to start a staggered release of Sony mirrorless reviews, including the Zeiss Touit line and Sigma's DN line. I've gotten all of these as sets, so I will mostly be reviewing them as such (more like mini-reviews around a common theme).
