Kingman, Arizona

Kingman, Arizona is in the background with I-40 leading to it. Lots of atmospheric distortion over Kingman. Kingman is 11.4 miles from where I was standing. If you look between the red lines you can see a slow moving truck entering the interstate. It was no fun standing on that overpass.

Exposure Differences 5DIV vs. 1DxII

I wonder if anyone else notices this. When I shoot with the 5DIV and the 1DXII side by side, I often notice that the files from the 5DIV are noticeably darker (underexposed).

I don't generally have much of a problem bringing up the exposure in Camera Raw, so I guess it doesn't really matter, but I just wonder if anyone else has experienced this as well. It's as though the 5DIV is relying on the sensor's ability to recover shadow detail to claim ISO sensitivity that is actually about one-stop less than the native sensitivity of the 1DxII.

CR's new unrelated advertising

Today for the first time I see advertisements on the front page of CR. While I understand a site owners right to profit from it's data base of subscribers, at least make the ads relevant to the audience!

Really strange, now I cannot see the ads. I meant to do a screen shot, but did not!

Ok now i found it, it is on the page for new DGI Mavic pro II AND on every main announcement on the home page!

Sorry, I do not approve on this actions...

Nikon 200-500

Hello,

My dear Nikon friend (Jesus calls me to love my enemies, so I try) just bought a Nikon 200-500. He was showing it to me and it looks really sharp on his D810. I've read that there is extreme copy variation, so he must have just gotten a good copy. How much do you think Nikon is losing on selling that lens or are they actually breaking even? I think this may have been discussed before, but I couldn't find it.

Thanks for any insight

UPDATE: Next From Sigma? 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art

HTML:
We haven’t heard much about Sigma in a while, but it looks like the next lens from the company will be a 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art if today’s reports are true.

This would give Sigma a very compelling ultra wide angle lens lineup with the 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art alongside the 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art and the 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art.

Expect an announcement this month ahead of CP+.

We haven’t heard anything further about new Sigma 70-200mm lenses.

DxOMARK Shows The Progress Smartphone Cameras Have Made in the Last 5 Years

HTML:
We all know how smartphones have pretty much killed the compact camera segment, but the growth is not simply because of convenience, the quality of smartphone cameras has improved faster than any other type of camera.

DxOMark breaks down how smartphone cameras and image processing has improved exposure, noise control, maintaining detail, stabilization, autofocus, zoom and the most recent, bokeh simulation.

From DxOMark:

Looking at the past 5 years of smartphone camera development, we can see that camera hardware and image processing are evolving alongside each other and at a much faster pace than in the “traditional” camera sector. DSLRs and mirrorless system cameras are still clearly ahead in some areas — for example, auto exposure, but in terms of image processing, Canon, Nikon, Pentax and the other players in the DSC market are behind what Apple, Samsung, Google, and Huawei can do. Thanks to their hardware advantages, the larger cameras don’t actually need the same level of pixel processing as smartphones to produce great images, but there is no denying that the performance gap between smartphones and DSLRs is narrowing. Read the full report

While I agree that the gap between smartphones and DSLRs is narrowing, it’s still not close and I’d even argue that smartphones aren’t close to prosumer compact cameras either.

Patent: Canon Patent Showing Wireless Charging of Cameras

HTML:
A patent is making its way around the web today that shows Canon cameras being charged wirelessly, the patent application itself is from 2015 and was awarded in July of 2017.

Canon already showcased wireless charging back in 2015 at the Canon EXPO. They had a modified EOS Rebel T6s and EOS M3 showing proof of concept.

The follow-up to the Canon ConnectStation CS100 was supposed to have wireless charging ability, but that product has yet to materialize.

You can view the patent here, or check out the Canon patent drawings below.

Film fans can now take advantage of in-body stabilized blur-free 4K movies while the new built-in flash ensures E-PL9 users are always ready for adding a splash of extra light. Anyone who can’t wait to share their new masterpieces online can take advantage of the new combined Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity to smartphones.

Due for delivery in mid-March, the Olympus PEN E-PL9 will be available in white, black or brown as body only or in a kit with lens (see below for choices and pricing).

It’s all about expression

The increase in creative options a camera brings too often comes with a scary menu system to match. Seeking to break down those barriers, the Olympus PEN E-PL9 lets you start your journey of photographic experimentation gradually via touch screen selection of creative programmes before moving on to more traditional settings. Select AUTO mode to let the camera identify many photographic situations from faces to groups and even movement and choose the best setting for you in the blink of an eye. Feel the need to adjust – fear not, a touch screen control with sliders allows you to adjust brightness, colour and contrast amongst other common settings. Tilt the screen down for a superior quality selfie and you can even touch select e-Portrait to smooth skin tones in camera. All of that comes in a very small and lightweight camera body that gives away both a traditional and modern feel.

Art not just for art’s sake

Olympus pioneered Art Filters way back and touching the screen brings them to life in a new way, making comparing the effects live on screen easier than ever. Besides Bleach Bypass, Instant Film is also new to the list of now 16 Art Filters – a nostalgic nod to the exaggerated colours of the early instant cameras. Use in daylight and the effects are subtle. Use at night on people with flash and a potentially dull shot is transformed: darker areas becomes green and skin is given a warm glow, an image is created that has a modern touch with a nostalgic feel.

Building on this, Olympus has made access to scene modes available through the touch screen too. Simply double tap the image that most closely matches what you see in your mind’s eye and the camera chooses the appropriate settings. The innovative access to simpler creative control is the new Advanced Photo (AP) mode. Olympus pioneered techniques like Live Composite used to be buried deep in the camera menus, often lying undiscovered. Want to take a photo of your friend creating a light painting in front of a lit up building at night? Used to be almost impossible, now tap the icon in AP mode, put the E-PL9 on a solid surface and off you go. Explore the delights of multiple exposure, HDR, sweep panorama, even focus bracketing – a technique that is a boon for close ups.

A learning process

A new set of easy access video “How To” guides hosted on the free OI.Share app, that handles the wireless transfer of images from camera to phone, provide useful tips for operating the E-PL9. Speaking of image transfer: the E-PL9 combines Bluetooth LE with Wi-Fi to ensure that the camera is always connected with your smartphone even when “asleep”. Want to see and import some images you just shot but the camera is back in your bag? No problem. Open the app and wake up the camera without needing to get it out and switch it on.

Quality through technology

What else does the E-PL9 have up its sleeve to help your photographs stand out from the crowd? Another Olympus pioneered innovation is in-body Image Stabilization (IS). Reducing blurry shots in low light, this system is married to the fast TruePic VIII image processor from the acclaimed Olympus camera flagship OM-D E-M1 Mark II which allows the camera to choose higher shutter speeds* further improving the chances of sharp results in challenging conditions.

Learning to love lenses

A system camera lives and dies by the lenses available to suit an ever expanding range of subjects. Many current Olympus PEN users head straight for the M.Zuiko Digital 45mm F1.8 portrait lens. Why? If you come from taking portraits on phones or compact camera, the lenses are often a wider angle to be more flexible. Sadly for the human face, wide angles tend to distort features. A classic portrait lens like the 45mm F1.8, slightly flattens the perspective which is more flattering. The wider aperture also delivers a natural looking blurred background (bokeh). While phones increasingly mimic this effect, the right lens sets an image apart. One area where a system camera really excels is getting in close: macro photography. Try our “all-day” go-to macro lens M.Zuiko Digital ED 30mm F3.5 Macro with the E-PL9. For capturing details in jewellery, food, material or flowers it opens a whole new world.

On top of the currently more than 20 Olympus M.Zuiko lenses it is possible to use hundreds of legacy lenses via various adapters.

Canon Continues Leadership of DSLR Camera Market With A Dominating Performance at the Big Game in Mi

HTML:
MELVILLE, N.Y., February 6, 2018 – In 2017, Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, was the number one selling Full-Frame Interchangeable Lens Camera (ILC)¹ brand and APS-C ILC² brand in the U.S., according to The NPD Group. Canon has been number one worldwide in these camera segments for the last 14 years, based on a global Canon survey³. February 4th showed that 2018 is off to a great start for Canon, as top sports photographers from across the country gathered in Minnesota to cover the big game between the teams from Philadelphia and New England. An estimated 80 percent4 of the photographers in the stadium used Canon EOS DSLR cameras and EF lenses, and Canon’s iconic white lenses filled the sidelines from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. In addition to the photographers on the sidelines, Canon’s line of HD broadcast lenses were also used extensively to help deliver the game to nearly 110 million television viewers.

“Canon understands there are many equipment options for photographers and we are honored to be the primary choice for both the pros capturing the nail-biting moments of the big game and for people capturing the important moments of their lives,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “As an industry leader, we also recognize the important role that service and support plays in keeping our customers satisfied, whether at our award-winning service centers throughout the country or on-site at major global events.”

A full complement of friendly and knowledgeable staff from the Canon Professional Services (CPS) team, a fixture at major sporting events throughout the year, were on site at the stadium for most of the week leading up to game day providing comprehensive equipment maintenance, extensive equipment loans and expert technical support to the major photo agencies and individual professional (or media) photographers covering the game.

For veteran sports photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Peter Read Miller, this was his 40th time covering the big game as a professional, and he was well stocked with Canon cameras and lenses.

“CPS has been a great support to me throughout the years, especially at a game like this where I get real time technical and equipment support. They’ve been instrumental in my success over the years.”,” said Miller. “40 years of shooting the big game is an amazing experience. Photographers are just as competitive as the athletes, and it’s great to know that I can count on Canon equipment and support to help me get the winning shot.”

In 2018, CPS will be proudly attending to professional photographers at over 22 locations, including major sporting, auto racing, Hollywood and political events.

Review: Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD by TDP

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD. At just $799, this is a very affordable 100-400mm option.

From The-Digital-Picture:

The Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens adds a very interesting choice to the mid-to-long telephoto zoom lens options list. This lens (and its Sigma counterpart) delivers image quality close to that of the major camera brands’ own offerings at a substantially lower price point. And, at a substantially lower, more-easily-portable weight.

This lens does not forgo the expected quality features, including vibration compensation, fast USD autofocus and moisture-resistant construction. It looks great and the smooth design feels great in the hand. The focal length range being an extremely useful one brings great value into the equation. Read the full review

A Minor Update on What's Coming from Canon at NAB 2018

HTML:

NAB 2018 begins on April 7, 2018 and is the next big “announcement show” after CP+ in March. Canon more often than not announces at least one significant product for the show, and some years make a big splash.

What does Canon have in store for us for NAB 2018?

A replacement to a current Cinema EOS camera is coming, and we know it’s not an EOS C200 Mark II, EOS C500 Mark II or an EOS C700 Mark II. The obvious choice would be an EOS C100 Mark III, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see an EOS C300 Mark III announced. We hope to confirm what the new Cinema EOS camera is soon.

There is also going to be a second camera announced at NAB 2018, but it won’t be in the Cinema EOS line.

The big splash as far as Canon cinema gear is concerned could be coming after NAB, we’ve heard rumblings of something bigger coming in the May/June timeframe, but we haven’t been able to confirm this.

If there was a DSLR coming for the show, we would have heard about it by now. DSLRs are generally not announced for NAB, outside of the EOS-1D C back in 2012.

As for lenses, Cinema EOS lenses rarely leak out ahead of the show, we cannot confirm any new CN-E lenses at this time.

Canon U.S.A. Welcomed Filmmakers to the Canon Creative Studio as a Sponsor of the 2018 Sundance Film

HTML:

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 6, 2018 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, returned as a Sustaining Sponsor to the 2018 Sundance Film Festival (January 18th–28th in Park City, Utah). Canon celebrated filmmakers working behind the camera with daily programming at the Canon Creative Studio, located at 592 Main Street.

At least 63 of the 239 films and projects that premiered as part of this year’s slate – over 26 percent — were shot using Canon equipment. Festival projects filmed using Canon cinema cameras include Generation Wealth, The Adulterers, The Sentence, Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind, Crime + Punishment, The Trade, The Price of Everything, This is Home, and Awavena.

“Each year, we return to the Sundance Film Festival to connect with the filmmaking community,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A. “In Park City this year, we celebrated innovative projects from the minds of some of the world’s best filmmakers, as well as the bold new technology that help make these projects possible.”

Canon welcomed 2018 Sundance Film Festival attendees to the Canon Creative Studio (open January 19th–22nd, from 11am-7pm) for interactive displays of Canon equipment, live panel discussions, and a relaxing lounge stocked with coffee and snacks. Guests were invited to take a hands-on tour of Canon’s newest cinema camera, the EOS C200, and learn about Canon’s innovative Cinema RAW Light 4K video format. Guests also explored Canon’s flagship cinema camera, the EOS C700, as well as Canon’s line of Cinema, CINE-SERVO, COMPACT-SERVO, and EF lenses.

The Canon Creative Studio also hosted cinematographers, directors, editors, producers, and crew at the invite-only Raise Your Glass To Cinematography cocktail party, Canon’s sixth annual celebration toasting the filmmakers of the Festival.

In 2018, the Canon Creative Studio featured new programming called Magic Hours, co-hosted by IMDbPro (Friday, January 19th), the AFI Conservatory (Saturday, January 20th), and VER (Monday, January 22nd). Each evening event, which were held from 5-7pm, featured an opportunity to network with companies and organizations that share Canon’s mission to support filmmaking.

Canon also introduced a new media partnership with American Cinematographer, the world’s leading publication dedicated to motion imaging and the art and craft of professional cinematography; the monthly international journal, published by the American Society of Cinematographers, is now in its 99th year. The magazine’s editors were on-site at the festival, and several of its contributors moderated a series of six in-depth panel discussions at the Canon Creative Studio, discussing topics such as lens choice, documentary cinematography, and shooting cinematic VR.

Image Stabilization in extreme movement?

Hello all. Quick question on IS.
So obviously I will use IS if I'm photographing something while standing on land and the light is low and my shutter speed is low. However, I shoot with a 70-200 2.8 ii while swimming in the ocean. I photograph waves, so it is always turbulent when I'm shooting. It's rare that I can be even close to still.

Since I got this lens, I've always shot with IS on in the water as I thought it would A) Help counter my movement in the water and B) Create easier viewing through the viewfinder due to the stabilization.

IS definitely helps with B, and I want to believe it helps with A but thats my question here. Is swimming in a turbulent ocean too much movement for the IS to handle? Am I possibly hurting the image sharpness? I do get sharp images but I'd say I get just as many "unsharp" images as I do sharp. Unsharp meaning I can clearly see where the lens focused (foreground and background are strongly blurred), but the part thats "in focus" is weirdly not sharp. Doesn't look like a crazy motion blur, but its definitely not sharp.

Now there is a lot that can go wrong for image sharpness while shooting in the water. Obviously my camera is in a water housing, with a lens port. Water can get on the port and cause an unsharp image. But usually when that happens, I cant even focus to begin with. So I'm wondering if the IS elements are moving around too much because of the extreme movement and causing a blur to the image? I shoot at an absolute minimum of 1/1000 for freezing movement but usually 1/1250 and up. Shooting on a 5d3. Would it possibly be better to leave IS off since I'm shooting at a high shutter speed anyways? I just thought IS would still be helpful but possibly I'm wrong. I plan on shooting with it off but still wanted to see if I could get some input here first.

Appreciate any insight anyone may have on lens IS and extreme movement, thanks.

6D + 80D or Just 6D?

My current lineup is the 6D, 16-35 4.0 IS, 40mm and 135 2.0. Was going to add an 85 and a 300 4.0 IS.
My photography is all of the typical stuff, but I'm also ramping up the "running" events quite a bit.
Would you say to just add the 85 and 300 or, instead of that, add an 80D, one of the 50's and 200 2.8?
Thanks.

Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art looked at by Uncle Rog + OLAF

https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2018/02/mtf-testing-for-the-sigma-24-105mm-f4-dg-os-hsm-art-series-lens/

Of note:

"All lenses are sharper stopped down a stop or more. But the Sigma 24-105 sharpens up spectacularly at f/5.6. The truth is, after seeing this difference, I’d probably just plan on using this as an f/5.6 lens whenever I could. This is a much better improvement than the Canon 24-105 IS II makes stopped down to f/5.6."

See plot below. Stopping down always helps, but wow does it ever for this lens. He later went on to call it "This is the Best Damned 24-105mm f5.6 Lens Ever Made". ;D

Well, this made me laugh.

I remember the days of doing intro to photography workshops, and trying to explain these terms logically, at times I made it worse. Much worse.

Chelsea’s thoughts on “What is the field?” (regarding depth-of-field):

“I bet one of you nerds knows and you’re gonna put it in the comments and be really sassy about it, and I’m gonna comment back, with more sass than you can handle.”
