6d mark II with 430ex III

Okay,

I apologize for the dumb question, but I know this is the place to get an answer. I have a 6D2 and just recently paired with it with a 430ex III for the "run and gun" bounce of the (white) ceiling shooting for family events with E-TTL.

I'm use to being able to attach a speedlite (6D, 70D) and even though the camera is an auot-ISO it will lock-in and default to ISO 400 (override as needed). This is not happening with my 6D2. I briefly looked through the 6D2 menu and didn't see too much. Heck, I didn't even see the 1st curtain/2nd curtain flash setting that I'm use to finding. What am I missing? I loved the "most of my shooting is auto ISO but attach a speedlite it locks to 400". Now I have to manually override and if I forget to change it back without flash, well you know the story.

Any tips, tricks, suggestions I should know about with the 430ex III? So far it hasn't appeared there is too much to it for settings, customizations.

Thanks!

Off to Infinity Mirrors soon: what lens to bring?

I'm off to the Infinity Mirrors exhibit at the Broad Museum soon.

If you are not familiar with this exhibit (previously in NY), it's effectively a collection of walk-in closets of light with mirrors and patterns reflecting ad infinitum. See a shot from a prior single installment I checked out earlier this year, and here are some shots of the exhibit itself on Google:

https://www.google.com/search?q=infinity+mirrors+broad&client=firefox-b-1-ab&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjyrsuN6ZvYAhVE6WMKHYNFC6EQ_AUICygC&biw=1916&bih=950

The rules?

  • No tripod
  • No flash
  • Literally 30 seconds time in each room and no returns to prior rooms -- it's a one-off viewing
  • I am seeing this with my wife and possibly one other person (they shuttle you in in twos and threes)
  • Lighting can run the gamut from bright and jarring to dim and twinkling
  • I will only bring one camera body
  • These rooms are tiny, perhaps 3' x 8' or so. The reflections go on forever, but anyone in the box with me will likely be in frame and close.

So, all that said (and see both link and attached shot), talk me down on why I should / shouldn't just go with my 16-35 f/4L IS on my 5D3 and call it good.

I do have an 85 f/1.4L IS rental in my possession through the holidays, but changing out in the exhibit is a terrible idea and though the bokeh would be nuts in the twinkly rooms, I wouldn't be able to shoot my wife without it being a uncomfortably tightly framed.

Strongly thinking wide FL and IS > aperture here, so it'll either be my 16-35 f/4 IS, 24-70 f/4L IS or possibly my 35 f/2 IS.

Thoughts? Has anyone been?

Ethics of a photograph containing a baited animal

Recently I went on a boat tour to see eagles, and the guide lured several in by throwing fish in the water. The eagles would then swoop down and catch the fish not far from our boat. Below is one shot from this trip. Note that the lighting was terrible, so I'm aware of issues in this shot.

So far, my belief is that this photo (or a better retake, since it's easy to take the tour again), should never go into my portfolio because the animal was baited. Also, the fish used is not native to this river and it was floating on the surface, so the splash pattern is not natural. I'm sure, though, that many photographers have similar shots that they pass off as completely natural.

Therefore I'd like to ask your opinions. Is it ethical to include such as such in a portfolio of wildlife photography, or does it taint my ability as a photographer to find and display truly natural phenomena at minimum impact to my subjects?

Note that I'd like to focus the discussion solely on the act of including it in my portfolio, and not on the boat operator doing this in the first place.

What to sell?

Earlier in the year, I had upgraded from the 5DIII to the 5DIV. The intention was always to sell the 5DIII and to use the 7DII as a backup. Then I recently shot a couple indoor performances and it was nice using 2 FF bodies with different lenses on each one and not having to swap lenses constantly, so I'm rethinking as to which one to sell: the 5DIII or the 7DII.

The 7DII has a higher frame rate but I find myself preferring the 5DIV at 7 FPS to the 7DII at 10 FPS due to the IQ advantage. The 7DII was a better match to the 5DIII because "reach" meant more when it was 20MP vs. 22MP. The 7DII has also served as my "video" rig and was paired to the only EF-S lens I own, the 18-135 IS. I also have the original M, which I only use when DSLRs are not allowed. The M was also used for video.

The first option I'm considering would be to sell the 7DII, EF-S 18-135 and the original M and replace it with a Canon refurbished M5. That would give me a slightly better video option with dual pixel AF and a touchscreen in one body. The downside would be that I'd be carrying the EF adapter because the EF-M lenses are too slow for low ISO video. It would also be a win on the M side because almost anything can focus better than the original M.

The second option would be sell the 5DIII and keep the 7DII/EF-S 18-135/M. This will net me more money, but then I wouldn't have a second FF for backup and times when I want to use two bodies with similar IQ at the same time. Thoughts?

Santa lives in Tennessee and has 85 f/1.4L IS lenses to share?

Uncle Rog may turn out to be Santa. He's loaned me this adorable pickle jar for the holidays.

Our poor dogs will to endure have a number of (treat compensated) photoshoots before we head off to join the family and take some proper Christmas tree light bokeh shots.

Is a 6K Canon Cinema EOS C900 Coming in 2018? [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told, though we haven’t confirmed, that Canon will announce a 6K Cinema EOS camera to compete with the Sony CineAlta VENICE 6K camera likely in May of 2018 (though the announcement date isn’t yet set in stone).</p>
<p>The new camera that could potentially be called the “C900” will incorporate a new full frame (larger than Super35) 6K image sensor.</p>
<p>It’s possible the camera could be announced at NAB in April, but it appears more likely that it’ll be announced after that trade show.</p>

<p>The same source also mentioned that Canon will be using their <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/first-photo-of-the-cinema-eos-8k-camera/">8K camera that they showed at the CineExpo in 2015</a> for Japanese coverage of the winter Olympic games in PyeongChang, South Korea in February. The cameras will not yet be consumer products at that time.</p>
<p>More to come as we get further confirmation.</p>

Review: Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III by DPReview

HTML:
DPReview has completed their review of the brand new Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III. The is Canon’s flagship PowerShot camera with a price tag to match, but is it worth it?</p>
<p>From <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-powershot-g1-x-mark-iii-review/7">DPReview</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>And yet – I find it hard to imagine myself recommending the G1 X III to anyone in particular. Sony’s options are less user-friendly, but offer far more speed and video options. Perhaps most crucially, Canon’s own G7 X Mark II offers similar speed, smaller size, better battery life and comparable (if not better) image quality in most situations besides daylight landscapes. Also, it’s considerably less expensive.</p>

<p>The PowerShot G1 X III is absolutely capable of fantastic photos, but the compromises made – specifically regarding its lens and battery – hold it back too much for us to recommend it wholeheartedly over a vast number of competitors in the marketplace. <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-powershot-g1-x-mark-iii-review/7">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>It looks like the reviews of this camera have remained consistent. It’ll give you great results, but not results that warrant the price tag. If this is a camera you’re interested in, wait for the inevitable price-drop or refurbished models on sale, both of which will likely come sooner than later.</p>

Announcing the Results of our 2017 Best of From Canon Poll

HTML:
Here are the results from our <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/its-time-to-vote-on-your-favourite-gear-from-canon-in-2017/">“Best of 2017 from Canon” poll from last week</a>. Canon didn’t do too much to surprise us, and the results seem to reflect that.</p>
<p>While the products in 2017 were pretty good, especially on the lens side of things, we still feel a bit of excitement is needed from the largest maker of photography equipment on earth.</p>
<p>Without further ado, the results chosen by you.</p>

</ul>
<p><strong>CR’s take:</strong> No real surprise here, a lot of people were looking forward to the EOS 6D Mark II and for a long time. It’s a good DSLR body and will give great results for those that get one.</p>
<p>On the negative side, most of us felt that the image quality didn’t see a big enough boost (if at all), and missing a 2nd SD card slot was hard to overlook.</p>
<p>However, we welcomed the articulating screen, 45 AF points (even if the spread could be better) and ergonomics of the camera.</p>

</ul>
<p><strong>CR’s take:</strong> 2017 wasn’t a big year for new lenses from Canon, but they did hit on the niche lens wishlist of a lot of people. It should be no surprise that a fast portrait L lens with IS came out on top by a large margin. The EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM seems to hit the right pricepoint, provides stellar results and first perfectly between the EF 85mm f/1.2L USM II and EF 85 f/1.8 USM.</p>
<p>The new tilt-shift lens have also been met with excitement from a small percentage of photographers that need these sorts of lenses. The three new TS-E lenses give Canon the widest range of professional tilt-shift lenses on the market.</p>
<p>We’re hoping for more fireworks from Canon in 2018 as far as lenses go.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Runner-up: </strong><a href="https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=ef-s%2035%20f%2F2.8&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=&BI=2466&KBID=3296&KWID=EZ">Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM</a> 8.9%</li>

<h4><strong>Your Biggest Wish From Canon in 2018</strong></h4>

<ul>
<li><strong>First Place: Canon EOS Full Frame Mirrorless 31.1%</strong></li>
</ul>
<p><strong>CR’s take:</strong> The elephant in the room will remain a full frame mirrorless option from Canon until it happens. Canon has proven they can make great mirrorless APS-C cameras with the EOS M5 and EOS M6, but we all want to see an answer to Sony’s full frame prosumer and professional cameras. I’m told by a lot of people that wish for such a camera, that a native EF mount is a must, which is something I agree with and I think Canon does too.</p>
<p>I don’t know if we’ll see one in 2018, but it has to come at some point and the second we hear anything about it, we’ll let you know.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Runner-up:</strong> Canon EOS 7D Mark III 13.5%</li>
<li><strong>Third Place:</strong> Canon EOS 5DS / 5DS R Mark II 11.9%</li>
</ul>
<hr />
<p>So there you have it, 2017 is all wrapped up and we await the gear goodies of 2018. First up will be a couple of new PowerShot G series cameras, the EOS M50 and new entry level rebels. We expect to see the first announcements ahead of CES in early January.</p>

What if Canon were no longer #1?

Just supposin'....

Talking to a third party rep yesterday and he was saying that there are some new marketing figures coming out showing that Canon are no longer #1 for FF camera sales. Apparently this was sales based on profit, not shipping and Sony had taken #1. Though not sure if it was Japan, Asia or global.
The problem with marketing is that you can spin the numbers a lot of different ways but this really would mark a significant turnaround in the market, and the fact that (if true) Sony could get anywhere near this would be a surprise at this time. But it will be interesting to see what comes out in the next few days.

So what do you think is the likelihood of this actually happening?

Does anyone still love their old gear?

I still have my positively ancient 1ds Mark III and it is my go to camera for long outings. I still love the old canon color profiles. In all fairness even the 6d beats it in most areas and the 5d IV mops the floor with it, but there is something about the 1d bodys that are so nice to use. I would love to see a pure replacement for this camera aimed solely at image quality. The 1dx and 1dxII are fantastic but more geared to sports.

5DIV v 5DV v 5D-M

Hi Guys

Geniune question from a mere enthusiast. Recently sold my 5D3 (great camera) with a view to upgrading - as phase detect and touchscreen functionality are things I really think are useful.

My dilemma, or question, to sound less dramatic is:

I've just heard that the reality of a mirrorless camera from Canon is now very possible in the new year (2018). Does everyone think that, on balance of probabilities, this will be up to 5D3/4 quality (for ease i'll just call this 5D-M)??? I ask as I have a Panasonic G85 that I really love and really take every time I travel and just love it's functionality. I'm too lazy to lug my DLSR stuff around.

If Canon go FF, do you think it will be with EF backwards compatibility, or will they continue to develop the M range of lenses to deal with FF???

Does anyone think that the 5D4 will be upgraded in the same year - or rather the following year - given the potential to release 5D-M in 2018. In particular, raising the bar on their touchscreen to say OLED and perhaps articulation rather than fixed????

I know there will always be technological advancements and trying to keep up is fraught with problems - particularly to the hip pocket. I guess my funds are limited, FF is my preference, but with millenial technology (read as cool stuff that is actually useful rather than making anybody a better photographer). I guess i can wait a year and continue to use my M4T G85 which is a great little product.

Thanks for your time and all thoughts are appreciated

fireworks videoing - 16-35 ii f2.8 or the new f4?

Heading out to DisneyWorld for NYE and plan on videoing the fireworks out there. I've got a Canon 6D ii (yeah I know I whined but the built in image stabilization for videoing and the sweet deal over thanksgiving was too good to pass up) and the 16-35 ii f2.8 and the newer F4. Generally I've used the F4 for daylight videos and the F2.8 for fireworks/nighttime stuff. I've also got the 24-70 F2.8 ii and recently recorded part of a nighttime outdoor concert with both it and the f2.8 wide angle because I wanted to get some closeups of the band members. (well - closer than i could get with the wide angle!). Checking the videos I was surprised at how soft the 16-35 was compared to the 24-70. It's not that the 16-35 is bad but there's a definite loss of detail in the shared ranges.

So now I'm rethinking if I want to use the f4 for nighttime videoing and, more specifically, the fireworks for the upcoming trip. I'm going to lose a stop and the 6D ii's sensor is definitely more noisy in darker settings than the 6D i. Ideally I'd just experiment with both but I don't have a solid way of testing before the actual event.

Anyone have any strong opinions one way or the other?

<p>The technical specifications of the special edition camera are identical to those of the standard production Leica M (Typ 262). With its concentration on the functions essential for photography and intuitive handling, it is the perfect camera for experiencing the pure enjoyment of Leica M-Photography. The Leica M (Typ 262) embodies all the essential advantages of the Leica rangefinder system, while consciously eschewing extraneous features that can distract from the pure rangefinder experience. Its full-frame CMOS sensor is conceived exclusively for rangefinder photography and intentionally does without additional functions such as Live View and video recording. Its 24-megapixel resolution ensures exceptional imaging quality and extreme sensitivity to light, which also makes the Leica M (Typ 262) a perfect camera for photography in any available light situation. Supporting the sensor’s versatility to capture top-quality photographs in any situation, the camera’s Maestro processor guarantees fast processing of captured images and immediate readiness to shoot.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>The handling of the Leica M (Typ 262) fulfills everything that discerning photographers expect from a Leica M. All controls and functions are logically and ergonomically located exactly where the photographer expects them to be. Just like every other M, it allows fast manual focusing with the coupled rangefinder and the focusing ring of the lens. It also offers a choice of manual or automatic aperture priority exposure. Due to the omission of Live-View and video capability, the menu is extremely lean and consists of only two pages. This ensures that all camera settings are easily and rapidly accessible at all times. This also applies to white balance, where the M (Typ 262) has a dedicated WB button on the back of the camera.</p>
<p>The Leica M (Typ 262) ‘red anodized finish’ will be available exclusively at Leica Stores and Boutiques beginning today, for the price of $6,995.00.</p>

Dynamic Range vs the truth

Hello Everyone,

I've just came across another internet test/comparison of new DSLRs where a camera was rated higher than the other one only because of the ability to boost shadows and highlights later in post processing.

I'm getting the feeling that most people spend thousands of $,€... regularly to get the "best" gear just because they see great looking pictures all over the internet and they want to compete with that.

Sure, with a camera for example like a D850 etc. you could take a picture at a rainy day without any contrast and boost it up to a great looking picture which produce as many likes as possible.

And learning how to do massive post processing is not difficult at all. Tons of tutorials are available online.

In my opinion, the real skills behind photography, patience, searching and exploring for the best composition in any condition with capturing a stunning scene just like it is, with any kind of gear (e.g. EOS 1300 with a 18-55mm STM) are key to a really good picture.

Cheers Stefan

P.S. Is there anybody else who is also annoyed be the HDR hype going on momentarily?
Pl. Give me your throughts.

Patent: Canon 400mm f/5.6 Mirror (Catadioptric) Lens

HTML:
A patent application showing a new mirror lens design from Canon is confusing to say the least. I figured the days of the catadioptric lens were well behind us, but here we are.</p>
<p><span class="notranslate"><strong>Specification from the patent:</strong></span></p>
<ul>
<li><span class="notranslate">Focal length: 400mm</span></li>
<li><span class="notranslate">Aperture: f/5.6</span></li>

<li><span class="notranslate">Back focus: 33.07mm</span></li>
<li><span class="notranslate">Lens length: 247.73mm</span></li>
</ul>
<p>The <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-ef-lenses-rumours-and-news/">image below from Northlight</a> shows the light path through the lens. The light path is in red, and the mirrors are outlined in blue and labelled.</p>

<blockquote><p>The blue bits are mirrors. The light comes in through L1, bounces off M1/M2 and through a hole in M1 back to the camera.</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=34076.msg698929#msg698929">neuroanatomist on the forum</a> thinks this could be an EF-M mount lens.
