SL2

I bought a old Sigma 600mm Mirror lens today from a Craigslist seller for $75 and mounted it to my SL2 just to see how bad the images were with a high MP body. First I tried hand holding at 1000 sec. No Go, blurry images. So I drug out my big heavy tripod with geared head and put it on my back porch. The top of Mt Spokane was totally hidden by smoke, so I focused on my garden a few hundred feet away.

I did not expect much, and I was rewarded. The wind was blowing enough to make it difficult. At ISO 2000, the sensor noise was starkly apparent, so I dropped the shutter speed down to 1/125. Slight blurring looked better than noise or the image with NR.

For a manual lens, I set it to Tv with auto ISO and -2/3 stop correction.

This made the image come out at 1/125 sec ISO 100. The lens is fixed at f/8. Sounds like the old rule of 8 eh.

I really liked the swivel LCD, I could touch the spot I wanted to view at 1X, 5X or 10X and manually focus on that spot. I should have set a shutter delay, but with the wind blowing, it likely did not matter.

In any event, here it is. I did adjust lighting, sharpness, etc of the image to my taste. The focus was on the corn silk. It actually looked better than I expected, the old lens is certainly not up to the digital age, but I could not argue with the price.

AFMA - shift over time?

I dot-tuned all my lenses when I first got my 6D about 18 months ago.

Recently I've been getting a bit dispointed with shots feeling many were just a bit soft.

Today some deer appeared on the green opposite our house, I grabbed the camera and missed focus on almost every shot. So later I tried rechecking the dot-tune and found it needed to shoft from -5 to +3.. i.e. it had shifted about half the total acceptable focus range.

Now it's back to perfect focus almost every time.

How long do others go between recalibrating lenses?

Review: Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has posted their extensive review of the popular Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art series lens. The praise for this lens continues with this review, it may be a niche product, but it looks like it’s currently the best 14mm option for your full frame DSLR currently available.</p>
<p><strong>From The-Digital Picture:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Easy to say is that this is the best 14mm f/1.8 DSLR lens ever produced, as there has never been another. Not hard to argue is that the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art Lens has the best 14mm image quality available to date. This lens delivers impressively sharp images, ranking very high in the entire field of lenses (not just among its ultra-wide peers). The design of this lens is aesthetically pleasing and the build quality similarly-good. The price will set you back a noticeable amount and the AF system may not leave you impressed, but the other aspects of this lens will make it a top choice for fulfilling the critical ultra-wide angle needs in many serious kits. Prepare to say “Wow!” when reviewing your images. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Sigma-14mm-f-1.8-DG-HSM-Art-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p>

<p>I think it’s time we get our hands on one of these unique lenses from Sigma.</p>

More Announcements from Canon Coming in September

HTML:
We’re told that Canon has plans for more product announcements in September, although we don’t know the exact date at this time.</p>
<p>What will be announced?</p>
<p>We can confirm that we’re going to get some new video products. We do not believe the new products to be Cinema EOS related, but that may change as we learn more.</p>

<p>We cannot confirm this, but it would make sense that the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-powershot-g1-x-mark-ii-specifications-cr1/">recently leaked PowerShot G1 X Mark III</a> will be part of the announcements next month.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

6D Mark II will not power up...

I'm a newbie here, sorry if this post is in the wrong place. I'm a long-time frustrated Canon user and have been seriously considering packing up and going home and buying elsewhere. I held out for the 6Dm2, hoping for an improvement, and despite the reviews, I bought it any way and found it to be a vast improvement in some areas (this is my first foray into full-frame). However, on Thursday I leave for Hawaii for 10 days and as of just now, the 6Dm2 will not turn on, with two fresh batteries. It will not turn on. It's 3 weeks old and it's dead. I've searched the web for solutions and have tried everything I have found, but it will not come back to life.

Meanwhile...the Nikon D850 specs are incredible. And the Sony A9 is amazing. Before the 6Dm2 announcement, I was considering the Nikon D750, but the D850 or A9 is the future. So, here's my dilemma: unless someone here can suggest a way to get my 6Dm2 powered in the next 3 days, I'm changing teams. Any ideas?

Sincerely,
Exasperated lifetime Canon fanboy

Frame rate and play off of 12-bit, 14-bit, 16-bit

Following the announcement of the D850, there is chatter about Canon's response and some of this has been on the level of MP and frame rate. If any manufacturer shows any step back on anything regards image quality they get a hail of abuse irrespective of the practical consideration and the area of the market the camera is aimed at.

I have zero understanding of the technicalities of processing power vs downsides such as heat sinking, but how far can we go with the 5DSR mk2 - if it were to appear - offering higher frame rates? Could they take a leaf out of Sony's book and do so by dropping from 16-bit, 14-bit or 12-bit and is there any noticable effect on image quality. Or, more exactly, under what circumstances would a difference become obvious?

<p><strong>Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Lens </strong>

Canon EF 85mm focal-length lenses are traditionally very sought-after options for portrait photographers. With that in mind, Canon is expanding its EF 85mm line up with the introduction of the new Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM; the first Canon EF 85mm lens to feature image stabilization, providing up to four stops<span class="green">*</span> of shake correction for smooth and crisp imagery.</p>
<p>The EF 85mm utilizes one large diameter, high-precision molded glass aspherical lens and features an ASC coating. The large f/1.4 aperture produces shallow depth-of-field, fast shutter speeds and a bright image inside the viewfinder, allowing photographers to focus and compose their image reliably. In addition, a circular aperture with 9-blade iris allows for beautiful bokeh.</p>
<p>The New Canon EF 85mm f/1.4 L IS USM is scheduled to be available November 2017 for an estimated retail price of $1599.00<span class="green">††</span>.</p>
<p><strong>New Tilt-Shift Lenses </strong>

Tilt-Shift lenses have several applications for suitable photographers because of their ability to provide enhanced creative control over perspective through the tilt function and depth-of-field through the shift function in their images. This ability can be optimal when photographing landscapes, portraits, and architecture.</p>
<p>The image quality derived from Canon Tilt-Shift lenses has evolved considerably since their first inception several years ago. Enhanced optical elements like molded aspherical glass and UD lenses are at the core of the new Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro lens, TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lens and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lens. These features provide users with edge-to-edge resolution, improved image quality over previous Canon TS-E lenses and minimum distortion. Canon also included two anti-reflective coatings, SubWaveLength Structure Coating (SWC) in the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lenses and Air-Sphere Coating (ASC), into the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L and TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lenses. SWC helps to reduce flare and ghosting, while ASC is a new technology that provides amazingly high, anti-reflective performance, particularly when alleviating incidental light that can enter a lens.</p>
<p>The new Canon Tilt-Shift lenses also offer improved operability over previous models, including larger tilt, shift-and-lock knobs, lock-release button and a new tilt-locking mechanism that firmly locks the lens in the zero-tilt position to help prevent unintended tilting to increase more precise shooting capabilities. The rotation of the tilt-shift lenses also allows users to freely change the axis of tilt movement and shift from right angles to parallel to better adapt to various shooting conditions and situations.</p>

<p>The new Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro lens, TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lens and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lenses are scheduled to be available November 2017 for an estimated retail price of $2199.00<span class="green">††</span>.</p>
<p><strong>Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash </strong>

To further enhance a photographer’s ability to shoot macro photography, the new Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash can be the ideal tool. The use of a macro twin-lite allows for a more ideal lighting situation for photographers, and can be adjusted and shifted depending on the direction the photographer would like to control. Detachable macro twin lites can be rotated up to 60 degrees, and features a maximum guide number of 85.3 ft (26 m)<span class="green">**</span>.</p>
<p>The new Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash inherits the ease of use and operability of Canon’s latest Speedlite EX series flashes and increased brightness of the focusing lamp compared to previous Canon Macro-Twin Lites. There is also less noise produced from the charging of the lights.</p>
<p>The new Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash is scheduled to be available November 2017, for an estimated retail price of $989.99<span class="green">††</span>.</p>

Canon also announced a new Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT flash. These new products will help provide both advanced amateur and professional photographers the unique photography tools for a variety of applications and solutions including architecture, landscape, food, product and portrait photography.</p>
<p><strong>Preorder: Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS $1599: <a href="https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1354803-REG/canon_ef_85mm_f_1_4l_is.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296">B&H Photo</a> | <a href="http://amzn.to/2vmIjTH">Amazon</a> | <a href="https://mpex.com/canon-ef-85mm-f1-4l-is-usm-lens.html?acc=3">Midwest Photo</a></strong></p>
<p>“Creating a powerful, timeless image requires more than just a camera. It requires high-quality, well-crafted optics and flashes to capture compelling photography,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., “These new lenses along and the Macro Twin-Lite flash will continue to push the boundaries and expand the possibilities of what advanced amateur and professional photographers capture and share with the world.”</p>

<p><strong>Discover a World That Cannot Be Captured with Smartphone Photography</strong>

Canon’s newest EOS M-Series offering helps expand creativity while providing the ability to capture photos that simply cannot be matched by smartphone photography. The EOS M100 camera is boosted by a powerful 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and the Canon DIGIC 7 processor. These attributes, alongside Canon lenses, are capable of rendering incredible details even when zoomed in on distant subjects or shooting in low-light scenarios, such as a dark restaurant. Packed with high-end features like Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which enables high-speed focusing for capturing fleeting moments nearly across the entire frame, and video mode, novice and enthusiast photographers alike will appreciate the tremendous capabilities of the new EOS M100 camera.</p>
<p>For those eager to share family photos, epic adventures or culinary creations with their friends and family, the EOS M100 camera is also Wi-Fi®<span class="green">*</span>, Near Field Communication (NFC)<span class="green">**</span> and Bluetooth<span class="green">***</span> connected, allowing for live-view remote shooting and the viewing and transferring of images to a compatible smart device, via the Canon Camera Connect app<span class="green">††</span>. High-quality images and video can be uploaded to a compatible device for easy sharing to select social media networks. Once connected through Bluetooth, the EOS M100 camera can also work with a compatible smartphone’s GPS function to provide a geo-tagged log of where every photo was taken on one’s journey.</p>
<p>The EOS M100 camera features a revamped and simple touch user interface that makes it easy for users to change settings, adjust modes and even focus on their subject. The 3.0-inch LCD touch-panel display also offers tilt functionality, helpful when shooting subjects from creative angles. Users can also use touch focus and Dual Pixel CMOS AF to smoothly transition focus between subjects with the touch of a finger.</p>
<p>Users will also discover a newly designed and intuitive touch interface that makes it easy to choose settings and focus shots, while beginners can learn and improve on their photography using Canon’s Creative Assist function, an intuitive setting that allows users to execute their creative vision, even without an “expert level” of camera knowledge. To make a scene brighter or blur backgrounds, users simply select their desired change within the Creative Assist menu, and the camera will automatically make corresponding setting adjustments, available immediately in live view. Preferred settings can be saved for next time, while those using the mode will begin to learn more advanced camera techniques to further pursue their creative vision—beyond just Auto Mode.</p>
<p>Sized to be an on-the-go camera, the EOS M100 is slimmer and lighter than other M-Series offerings, and fits neatly into a bag with ease. The new sleek and refined design features two body color options—white or black.</p>
<p>The use of interchangeable lenses is a differentiator factor of the Canon EOS M-Series from most smartphone photography, with Canon offering seven distinct and lightweight EF-M lenses, spanning wide-angle, telephoto and macro applications. EOS M100 users can find a lens for nearly any application while maintaining a compact system ready for on-the-go moments. For those with Canon’s EF lenses, the EF-EOS M Mount Adapter (sold separately) will allow for the use of Canon’s complete lineup of EF and EF-S lenses. Exploring close-up macro photography is also possible using the EOS M100, combined with a macro lens option—great for wildlife or detailed food photos.</p>

Canon EF 400 F4 DO IS II USM first impressions

I thought some fellow photographers might be in similar situation like I was and might appreciate a feedback on this great lens if they are hesitant to buy or rent one.

I am interested in nature photography, mostly in mammals to be more specific, although I shoot occasionally birds, as well. I shoot stationary (hides) and scout 50-50 ratio.
I had been using Canon EF 400 F5.6 L lens on various rigs for 4 years. I consider that lens as the best value for general wildlife photography, especially if you are on a tight budget. While I still love that lens for being sharp wide open, lightweight, quick AF, I wanted to step up to a lens that has more flexibility, is faster, can be used with extenders to get some extra reach. Weight was also key, as I often do hikings or walk through swampy terrain to get closer to my subjects. I was hesitating between several lenses, including Canon EF 100-400 F4.5-5.6 IS II USM, Canon EF 300 F2.8L IS II USM (+1.4X III), Canon EF 400 F2.8 IS USM (mark I). For the criteria mentioned above, I finally decided to choose the 400 DO II, which was offered to me second hand in brand new condition and at a very reasonable price.

As I had been a 400 5.6L user, that's the lens I can compare to. I must say this DO II lens is a game changer! It is tack sharp wide, noticebly sharper than the 400 5.6L. 4 stops of IS is something that I am not used to, it is a very welcomed feature nonetheless. AF is definitely quicker. Needless to say, ergonomics and built are flawless.
One of the reasons, I picked the DO II is the fact that it takes extenders so well. Adding 2x III, makes it a hand-holdable, sharp 800mm F8 lens. I would say this compo equals the 400 5.6L in sharpness and AF speed. Being 2,1 kg in weight, it is definitely portable. The bokeh of the bare lens is smooth, I have not noticed anything wrong with OOF highlights, which was one of my concerns before I bought this DO lens. I haven't tried it in an "after-shower" scenario where those OOF highlights are dominant, though.
The Red deer rut is on the horizon here, I can't wait to go for it with that lens.

Overall, I am very happy with that lens, it is an improvement in every aspect for me. I highly recommend to buy or rent one!

(Shots were taken with the DO II+2X III.)

Diffusing and using Gels with a 600EX?

I'm completely new to using a 600EX with a 5DM3 for both indoor and outdoor photography.

1. If ceilings/walls are too far away to bounce off and the flash is mounted to the top of the camera, is it better to use a diffusion cap, like https://www.amazon.com/Sto-Fen-Omni-Bounce-Diffuser-580EXII-Yongnuo/dp/B0007DDK7A
OR a mini soft box like this https://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Speedlight-Speedlite-600EX-RT-Panasonic/dp/B003Y30334/ref=pd_sim_421_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B003Y30334&pd_rd_r=ZT02KNCNT340GYNERFSN&pd_rd_w=c8TDv&pd_rd_wg=l9aAD&psc=1&refRID=ZT02KNCNT340GYNERFSN
OR something different entirely?

2. I want to buy something to blend the light from the flash with warm light from outdoors I think CTO gel (1/4th CTO strength). What is the best way to do this? Just buy a gel and wrap it around the dome of the flash OR are there dome caps with the gel built in that I should get?

Thanks in advance.

Stolen photos

No doubt a previously discussed subject, but I was just wondering what other people would do in this situation.

For certain keywords in Google Images I can almost guarantee that there will be photos I have taken that have subsequently been stolen and used without my knowledge or permission. I found another one yesterday. There is very rarely any attempt to contact me to ask permission, no credit or link back to my website, or any offer of compensation.

There have been a few exceptions and if people ask I normally agree if they give me a credit and back link. A Muslim man in Malaysia was compiling a book containing the great mosques of the world and asked to use some of my images. I agreed and sent him full size jpgs. When the book was published he sent me a free copy. It's a beautiful book (Masjid - Selected Mosques From The Islamic World) and if you can find a copy it will cost you $100. Considering the quality of the book, it is quite an honour that it contains some of my photos.

People buying the stock photos I have on Fotolia is fine (that's what they're there for), but it's never acceptable simply to steal photos from my website.

I sent an e-mail to the latest offender asking him/her to remove the photo or to compensate me. So far, there has been no reply and when I have sent e-mails previously I don't usually receive a reply.

What should I do?

1) Be flattered that my photos are considered by some people to be worth stealing?
2) Keep hassling them until the photo is removed or I receive some compensation?
3) Contact the hosting site to get the image removed?
4) Issue a DMCA?
5) Nothing?
6) Add a big, ugly watermark so that images are unusable? I really don't want to do this because I want the site to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible.

I lead a very busy life with two young kids and don't really have the time to go through lengthy correspondence, therefore, option 5 is normally my response but it has now started to irritate me.

I know that there are much better photographers than me in this forum and no doubt some of you will have plenty of experience of this.

Edit: Option 6 added.
