Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS & Three More Lenses Coming at the End of August [CR2]

HTML:

To further clarify the certification post from yesterday, we have been told what to expect announcement wise from Canon at the end of August.

Firstly, the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS is scheduled to be announced at this time. We do not have any specifications or pricing at this time.

Secondly, “interchangeale lens 2” will actually be three different lenses. We’re working on getting the focal length of the lenses. It doesn’t feel that they’ll be L series lenses and we’re not sure if they’re EF-M, EF-S or EF at this time.

Interview With Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki

HTML:
Sigma Canada had a chance to interview CEO Kazuto Yamaki during his visit to Canada.

Some highlights from the interview:

Was there ever a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.0 Art lens?

Will Sigma consider making CINE Anamorphic lenses?

Sigma’s plan for FE mount lenses in the future. Same lenses with E mount, or new designs?

What does the future of lens technology hold? Why are they still big and bulky?

Some personal questions about him, his fav photographers, what websites he visits, and cameras he regularly shoots with.

We were told back in 2013 that Sigma was working on a 24-70mm f/2 lens and it looks like according to Mr Yamaki, that it was just too difficult to make usable.

Obnoxious, obstructive, blank adverts blocking right hand side of main page?

Is it just me or do other users see these obnoxious, black adverts obstructing the forum one-line summaries on the right hand side of the main page?

It's bad enough that adverts block essential items but it seems a total waste of time that they just appear as black, blank boxes and advertise nothing at all.

I read these forums using Mac & iPad on Safari if that might make a difference?

Thanks & kind regards,

EF-S 35 mm 2.8 Macro - Pictures

A friend of mine has bought a new camera - the 80D and, by luck, he was the first customer to receive the new EF-S 35 mm 2.8 macro-lens of Canon. Here some sample shots, all taken with a 7DII:

grasshopper: cropped (grasshopper is in the middle of the original photo, no chance to take a second shot before the grasshopper hopped away. ;) ). All other images: not cropped, only reduced in size.

picture sc913_2537: F 2.8 1/6400 sec
picture so913_2377: F 2.8 1/5000 sec
picture so913_2391: F 8.0 1/2500 sec
picture so913_2430: F 8.0 1/400 sec

I really like this lens and will possibly buy it. It is sharp, it is very light, reasonable priced and DOF is wider as the DOF of e.g. EF 100 L macro lens. It still offers a nice bokeh at F2.8. At F8.0 the range of DOF is - in my opinion - really nice as you can see it on the picture with the blue flower or the orange bug. The entire flower/bug is sharp at F8.0. The only disadvantage: you have to get close, very close to the object you would like to shoot. Sometimes to the minimum distance of 3 cm (roughly 1 inch...)

and it is sooo light and small...

Why you should calibrate Canon EF Lenses

Reikan Focal has just released this interesting article with some graphs showing the percentage of units of each Canon lens that will benefit from calibration:

http://www.reikan.co.uk/focalweb/index.php/2017/07/calibrate-canon-ef-with-reikan-focal/

Honestly, I am not surprised by the high percentages. I do use Reikan Focal and all my fast primes need more or less calibration, but none of them is spot-on without MFA.

Canon EOS M20 Coming at the End of August [CR3]

HTML:
We’re told that the next mirrorless camera from Canon will be announced at the end of August. This will be a direct replacement for the EOS M10, and we’re assuming it will be called the “EOS M20”.

While no specifications have been thrown our way, I think we’re likely looking at a toned down version of the EOS M6 in a slightly smaller form factor. I think it’s safe to say it will be equipped with the 24mp sensor that appears in most of Canon’s consumer ILC cameras.

We hope to see the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS announced at the same time.

More to come…

3 Legged Thing Releases a Low Cost & Lightweight Universal L Bracket

HTML:
3 Legged Thing, the maker of some nice and affordable tripods has released a new universal Arca style L bracket that will fit most Canon DSLRs. I moved to a universal L bracket as I got tired of buying a new bracket with each camera I purchase. This universal bracket will be great for any DSLR that that isn’t equipped with an external battery grip or full size EOS-1D bodies.

The QR11-L is a well thought out design that makes changing orientation from portrait to landscape really quick. All of the ports on your camera should be easily available with the L bracket attached, be sure to check the compatibility information after the break.

The QR11-L will retail for £49.99/$49.99 and will begin shipping on August 1, 2017.

Macphun Makes Free Public Beta of Luminar for Windows Available

HTML:

Macphun debuts its first-ever software for the PC, heralding a new era of cross-platform solutions for photographers

San Diego, CA – July 13, 2017 — Macphun, the California-based developer known for delivering award-winning products for Mac, today launched the free public beta of its award-winning photo editor Luminar for Windows. To download the beta, please visit macphun.com/beta.

Luminar is a powerful photo editor designed to tackle anyone’s photography needs, from correcting challenging image problems to artful stylizing. Users can choose between levels of image processing complexity based on their experience, and adapt the workspace controls to their skill level, moving up to more advanced modes as they learn. Luminar works in non-destructive fashion and aims to take “work” from photo editing “workflow” for photographers worldwide.

In April, only 5 months after its launch, Luminar for Mac won the prestigious TIPA award for Best Imaging Software 2017. This all-in-one photo editor is a cutting-edge solution for creating fascinating images without extra hassle. Luminar includes over 300 robust tools that make fixing, editing and perfecting a photo as easy as moving a slider.

“We are thrilled to release our first PC product today and give photography enthusiasts around the world the first taste of our best-selling Mac product,” said Kevin La Rue, Vice-President at Macphun. “By test-driving Luminar for Windows, beta testers can help shape our software and make the final release a perfect fit for everyone,” concluded La Rue.

The public beta is free of charge and already matches some of the most important features of Luminar, such as the newest and most advanced tool developed by Macphun’s Research and Development Lab – the Accent AI Filter, powered by artificial intelligence technology. The filter allows anyone to create stunning images with a single slider, substituting for dozens of traditional controls like shadows, highlights, contrast, tone, saturation, exposure, details and many others.

Admittedly, several features from the Mac version of Luminar remain in development for the Windows platform, among them workspaces, plug-in integration, object removal, noise reduction, and more. As these are completed, the public beta will be updated regularly leading to a full cross-platform release late in 2017.

Key features of the Luminar for Windows public beta:

Adaptive user interface – Exactly matching the Mac version, the software adapts to the skill level and preferences of the photographer.

One-click presets – Over 50 pre-defined styles for every photography style.

Photo Editing Filters – Over 40 custom filters, each with built-in visual tips and a unique set of easy-to-use controls for correcting, enhancing and stylizing images.

RAW file conversion – Support for the latest RAW file libraries.

Non-destructive workflow – Edit without fear.

Recommended System Requirements – Windows 10, Core i5 2.2 or better, 8GB RAM, 1GB GPU RAM, SSD with 20+GB free space.

AF setups you personally use.

Following on from an earlier thread of mine re camera setup new bodies give an overwhelming array of AF options. These are the kind of settings that change as your use does but I thought it might be interesting to see where people are with their personal customization and usage.

I have been a 1DS MkIII user for years and whilst it is a great camera one of the many areas where there have been huge changes is in AF and customization, I never even bothered with AFMA because it seemed to make no difference in results!

Now I have new cameras I am still working through my options as a generalist, indeed until I get a decent amount of use out of them it seems churlish to change off factory.

So currently I have the AF-ON button set to turn AF off, I find this much more intuitive and gives me no thumb strain than BBF.

I also have the front programable button to set switch between Servo and Single shot AF, and the first and second shot priority set to focus (out of focus shots have zero value to me).

So what have you set as your favorite settings so far?

Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art Sharpness Tests from Lensrentals.com

HTML:
Roger at Lensrentals.com has put the brand new Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art through OLAF testing and compared it to various lenses of the same focal length, most notably the Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II.

From Roger:

Let’s face it, there hasn’t been an impressive 14mm prime for SLRs for a while, and I haven’t heard the natives banging on the castle doors demanding one. But for some people this is going to be a really fun lens. I consider it reasonably priced for what it is; a unique and excellent lens that hasn’t been made before. I shot real-estate for a brief moment in time, and I would have killed for this lens then. And I like playing with ultra-wide images in general, so I’m kind of excited about it. It won’t be a huge fraction of my images, but it will be a tool I didn’t really have before.

A lot of people will never shoot 14mm and will never notice this lens exists. But for those who do, the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art Lens is probably going to be a fascinating lens indeed. Read the full review

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art is better than the much older Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II as far as optical performance goes.

Sigma 135mm f/1.8 ART vs Zeiss Milvus 135mm f/2: Round 2 | Dustin

After I did my review of the Sigma 135mm f/1.8 ART (http://bit.ly/ART135DA) I got feedback from a number of end users who felt that the copy I tested wasn't representative of the potential performance of the lens. I brought in a second copy of the 135 ART and put it back up against the Zeiss Milvus 135mm f/2 (which I own). This video shows what I discovered:

HTML:

MELVILLE, NY (July 11, 2017 at 12:01 A.M. EDT) – Today, Nikon announced the new AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR, modernizing this popular zoom lens with a myriad of the latest Nikon technologies. The new lens features enhanced Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization capability and integrates a stepping motor for fast and quiet AF performance, making it Nikon’s first full-frame AF-P lens. This new NIKKOR lens is a versatile, compact telephoto option for intermediate FX and DX-format photographers looking to capture sports, wildlife, candids, travel and other subjects at long distances, all with stunning clarity.

“This latest lens reaffirms Nikon’s commitment to giving FX-format shooters of all levels the unparalleled quality of NIKKOR glass, with the benefits of our latest optical technologies,” said Kosuke Kawaura, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc.

Updated with the Latest NIKKOR Lens Technologies

Whether capturing a baseball game from the bleachers or the sights of a scenic vacation, the new AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR is a versatile lens that helps users capture sharp images and video, even in challenging light. The new AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm is lighter than its predecessor, despite packing new technologies that help those shooting photos and video achieve stellar results. Enhancements to the lens include:

Improved Vibration Reduction (VR) System: The new AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm lens provides users with up to 4.5 stops* of VR stabilization, to help create sharp photos and smooth video, even in low light or while handheld. Users can choose from either Normal or Sport VR Modes for added stability when shooting from a non-stationary location.

Lightweight with Stepping Motor Technology: This AF-P lens uses a stepping motor for fast and quiet autofocus, which reduces the sound of lens operation while recording HD or 4K UHD video. This new technology also contributes to the lens’ reduced weight, making it easy to carry on all-day excursions.

Electronic Diaphragm: This lens takes advantage of the fast burst speed of Nikon DSLR cameras, as the Electronic Diaphragm not only provides smooth exposure transitions during video capture, but also helps maintain consistent exposure during high-speed shooting, such as when photographing sports.

Get Close: The AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm lens features a minimum focus distance of only 3.94 ft. (1.2 meters) and a reproduction ratio of 0.25x, letting users get even closer to capture the most extravagant details, even at 300mm.

Lens Construction: The lens features dust and drip resistance, along with a metal lens mount for durability. It features a 9-blade diaphragm for a natural, circular bokeh. The lens also features an ED element to significantly reduce instances of chromatic aberration.

Price and Availability

The Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR lens will have a suggested retail price (SRP) of $699.95**, and availability will be announced at a later date.
