Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC G2 pre-order is live; Adorama jumped the gun

Oops: Adorama is taking pre-orders before Tamron has announced the lens.

https://photorumors.com/2017/06/26/tamron-sp-24-70mm-f2-8-di-vc-usd-g2-lens-now-available-for-pre-order/

I wonder: did Sigma's announced price on their 24-70 2.8 OS kick Tamron into rush/panic/reactionary mode? This Tamron lens is both $100 cheaper than their G1 version and $100 cheaper than Sigma...

Nikon Makes the World's Largest Human Camera, Because Why Not?

HTML:
<em>NIKON CELEBRATES ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY AND IS INCLUDED IN THE GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS: THEY HAVE CREATED THE BIGGEST HUMAN CAMERA IN THE WORLD TO CELEBRATE THEIR CENTENARY</em></p>
<p>The Guinness World Record dedicated to Nikon’s centenary was established last Sunday: more than 1000 people got together to form the biggest human camera in the world! Everyone who responded to the call to action was invited to participate. All you had to do to take part in this ambitious feat was enrol on the site. A judge from the Guinness World Records was there to certify the record, and to proclaim the official result.</p>
<p>The initiative was conceived and organised by Nital, the official distributor of Nikon and by Media Italia. It is part of the celebrations for the centenary of the legendary Japanese brand: a unique event which will go down in history, just like Nikon who has used its technology for 100 years to always be one step ahead to offer the right tools before anyone else to experience and then relive every moment and every emotion with a quality of image which is special and unique.</p>
<p>Nikon is a global icon: in their 100 years of history there have been many cameras that have marked milestones in photography! It was the main star of “Blow Up”, an emblematic film in the history of cinema and of “The Bridges of Madison County”, as well as space adventures and reports which have documented outstanding events of the last century.</p>

7D Mark II focus point

Hey gang,
I was shooting a event with my 70D and my 7D Mark II. in reviewing picutres with my 70D it will display the focus point during review. But when I look at at my 7D Mark II. I dont see the focus point in the image review.
Even though I have the AF point display on. I have had teh camera a wile and now having 100k shots on it. I never questioned the display in the past. I'm I doing something wrong? I am shooting Rodeo with JPG and RAW AI servo. High speed shutter. Apture mode.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III

I debated getting this lens b/c I had the version II plus the 11-24 and 24-70 2.8II. Carried it on a long business/vacation around Europe and have been very impressed with the IQ. On the 5DSR, it is easy to create architectural pics w/o putting on the 24TS by simply cropping the lower half of the image. This makes handheld HDR panos possible, even in a crowded place where a tripod and fiddling with the TS just would not work. I will post a few examples. (I haven't de-ghosted all of these yet.) 1st pic is from a tripod at dawn, second at midday by hand.

Sigma Artisans: Running With the New Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 OS Art

HTML:
The <a href="https://www.sigmaartisans.com/running-new-sigma-24-70mm-art/">Sigma Artisans blog</a> has posted some real world work from the brand new Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS Art series lens.</p>
<p><strong>From Sigma</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>We invited Jess Baumung, a Toronto-based running and music photographer, to test out an early sample of the latest Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG HSM | Art for a few hours and see what he could do. No big budgets or fancy post-processing, just one photographer, natural light and a few local Toronto runners in a real-world shoot.</p></blockquote>

Canon A-1 and speedlites

Has anyone tried a 600EX-RT or ST-E3-RT on an old Canon A-1 film camera? Hoping somebody has some experience with this. I don't want to fry the electronics in either.

I'm almost positive it would be all manual mode, the way I shoot flash anyway.

Just wanting to know if anyone has tried it.

Thanks!

Edit: I tried with the ST-E3-RT and it would not trigger. Any suggestions for off camera flash with this old film camera? I guess it will be corded.

Worst advice ever

Stopped by my local camera store (name withheld to protect the guilty) to pick up a mounting plate, and was talking to the clerk and asked if they had a waiting list for the new 6D2 yet.....The answer was no, and then he told me about the new Tamron 18-400 lens that was coming soon and how it will be the only lens that you ever need to buy! ! !

And this comes after inquiring about a FF camera.......

It is easy to see why mail order is doing so well.....

Where's the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC G2?

<em><strong>Update:</strong> We should see the new Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC G2 announced and available for preorder by the end of the week.</em></p>
<p>A couple of sources we talked to in the know claimed the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC G2 was coming this week, are confused as to why it wasn’t announced alongside the 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (Model B028). We even received product links from a couple of retailers for the lens.</p>
<p>Perhaps Tamron feels it will fit nicely alongside the announcement of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II next week?</p>
<p>The lens is coming and pricing will be $1199 USD.</p>

Ef 24-105mm f/4 IS II--JiGgLy IS aGaiN!

After having a Canon Professional Services tech tell me that a jello effect in any position was not normal, that it indicated problems with the IS motor on the ef 24-105mm f/4 IS II, I ordered a replacement.

Even more pronounced jiggling! (And very out-of-alignment elements, crazy soft on the sides, not sharp in the center.)

Was it a freak occurrence to get two bad IS motors in a row? Or...

Does the ef 24-105mm II have a new type of IS with a "normal" jello effect? Is this something for video?

By jello-effect, I mean that before the IS "locks" in for a shot, a brief period of clearly visible jiggling occurs, and then it does "stay still."

On the first lens this appeared, it only did so when the body/lens was held 45 degrees clockwise from horizontal/landscape orientation; otherwise, the effect was not visible. On the replacement, the jiggling was visible in many positions, and more pronounced. (Note that the replacement was probably somebody's return, as it had a significantly older serial number than the first one, and was delivered even when the lens was apparently still on backorder.)

LensTip Review: EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM

Better late than never on Canon's recent non-L 70-300 offering:

http://www.lenstip.com/503.4-Lens_review-Canon_EF_70-300_mm_f_4-5.6_IS_II_USM_Image_resolution.html

TL/DR version:

  • Good but not stellar resolution; center looks 70-300L-ish, but it does not match up towards the outside of the frame. The 70mm wide open performance drops like a stone away from the frame center.

  • Rave review of the nano USM: "the autofocus performance is sensationally fast. Running through the whole distance scale and confirming the focus at the shorter end of the focal lengths spectrum takes 0.1-0.2 of a second; for the longer focal lengths the process is by 0.1-0.2 of a second longer.

    To be honest I am a bit surprised that, for the first time, such technology appears in completely amateur constructions. The working culture of the autofocus, its noiselessness, 100% accuracy, and superior speed put to shame even some professional lenses. A round of applause for Canon!"

A generally positive read on the value this lens offers: "Taking it all into account I don’t doubt the lens will find a lot of happy buyers, especially that the products of independent producers, even if cheaper, are inferior when it comes to image resolution, and far behind when you compare their autofocus and stabilization to those of the tested lens."

Tamron Announces 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD

HTML:
<em>Dramatic extended range achieved by combining cutting-edge optical design and other new breakthrough technologies including a redesigned cam structure</em></p>
<p><strong>18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (Model B028)

</strong><em>June 23, 2017, Commack, NY</em> – Tamron, a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the launch of the new 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (Model B028), the world’s first ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens for APS-C DSLR cameras, which covers a focal length range of 18-400mm. Since the 1992 launch of its AF28-200mm F/3.8-5.6 Aspherical (Model 71D), Tamron has dominated the all-in-one zoom category and has produced many lenses that cover wide-angle to telephoto zoom ranges. Tamron has now developed an ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom that extends to 400mm (35mm equivalent of 620mm) and a 22.2x zoom ratio. Packed in a light, compact body (4.8in./24.9oz.)2 is Tamron’s accumulated knowledge and experience for all-in-one zoom lenses, including the most advanced optical and mechanical designs, an HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) for the AF system and the Vibration Compensation system. Photographers can now enjoy wide-angle to ultra-telephoto photography using one lens, which is ideal for travel photography and eliminates the need to carry extra lenses. The new Model B028 lens enables photographing a wide variety of ultra-telephoto images including everyday casual scenes. The 18-400mm will be available in the U.S. at the end of July at $649.</p>

<p><strong>PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS</strong></p>
<ol>
<li><strong>The world’s first3 ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens to achieve 400mm telephoto</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>The new Model B028 is the world’s first lens for APS-C DSLR cameras that covers a focal length range of 18-400mm and achieves a zoom ratio of 22.2x. The focal length of 400mm on the telephoto end enables the capturing of ultra-telephoto pictures with the 35mm equivalent of 620mm angle of view. Now, with just this one lens, a photographer can readily enjoy the power of ultra-telephoto to bring distant subjects closer as well as the perspective-flattening effects that only extreme telephoto settings can achieve. This all-in-one zoom lens is ideal for travel and everyday shooting. It allows a photographer to switch from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto without changing lenses, making it faster and easier to capture a much wider range of subjects including travel scenes, wildlife, action sports, landscapes, cityscapes, portraits and food.</p>
<ol start="2">
<li><strong>Excellent image quality across the entire zoom range, from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto and macro</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>The optical construction of the B028 consists of 16 lens elements in 11 groups. The use of specialized glass elements such as LD (Low Dispersion) and aspherical lens elements effectively minimizes wide-ranging aberrations, including chromatic aberrations and distortion, thereby assuring outstanding image quality. Optimum power distribution among the individual lens element groups achieves both the optical performance and the compact size necessary for an ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens that boasts 400mm focal length. Also, it enables tele-macro photography with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9.</p>
<ol start="3">
<li><strong>Lightweight and compact design exhibits Tamron’s basic philosophy for all-in-one zoom lenses</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>Despite being an all-in-one zoom lens that achieves 400mm ultra-telephoto, Model B028 is light and compact with a total length of 4.8in. and a weight of 24.9oz.4 A new lens barrel design utilizing three-step extensions was developed to enable the necessary elongation to produce a 22.2x zoom ratio. Compared to the conventional approach, the division into a larger number of cams ensures comfortable operation and stability while zooming. Tamron’s philosophy for all-in-one zoom lenses is to allow each photographer to casually capture everyday photos with a lens of a practical size, and Model B028 fulfills this philosophy.</p>
<ol start="4">
<li><strong>HLD motor provides high-precision AF and enables compact lens construction</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>The AF drive system for Model B028 uses Tamron’s exclusive HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) motor. The power-saving HLD motor produces outstanding driving torque, and adjusts motor rotation from low to high speed to enable accurate and quiet focusing. The HLD motor takes up less space thanks to its small size and circular arc shape that allows the size of the lens to be reduced.</p>
<ol start="5">
<li><strong>Equipped with the Vibration Compensation system necessary for ultra-telephotography at 400mm</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>Despite its compact size, Model B028 is equipped with Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) system, which effectively curbs camera shake under low light conditions (such as a dimly lit room or at dusk) and while taking ultra-telephoto pictures. This greatly expands opportunities for casual handheld shooting. The jitter-free stability of the viewfinder image allows for easier framing and enables the photographer to compose the subject quickly and comfortably.</p>
<ol start="6">
<li><strong>Electromagnetic diaphragm system now used also for Nikon-mount lenses</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>The electromagnetic diaphragm system, which has been a standard feature for Canon-mount lenses, is now employed in Nikon-mount lenses5. More precise diaphragm and aperture control is possible because the diaphragm blades are driven and controlled by a motor through electronic pulse signals.</p>
<ol start="7">
<li><strong>User-friendly features for everyday comfortable use</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>With an eye toward active outdoor photography, Model B028 features Moisture-Resistant Construction to ensure worry-free shooting as well as confidence while shooting under adverse weather conditions. Also, the Zoom Lock mechanism prevents undesired movement of the lens barrel under its own weight when the camera is angled downward while walking.</p>
<ol start="8">
<li><strong>Compatible with TAP-in ConsoleTM, an optional accessory product</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>The optional TAP-in Console provides a USB connection to a personal computer, enabling the user to easily update the lens’s firmware as well as to customize features, including fine adjustments to the AF and VC.</p>
<ol start="9">
<li><strong>External design placing importance on functionality and ease of use</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>While inheriting the design that makes use of many organic curves and the delicately polished form down to fine details that characterize the SP lens series, the new Model B028 comes with a highly sophisticated design that also places a lot of importance on the lens’s functionality and ease of use, featuring an overall form that faithfully encompasses the internal structures within, a slim Luminous Gold brand ring and the switch shape design.</p>

If you were going to buy a Powershot with at least 20x optical zoom today...

If you were going to buy a Powershot with at least a 20x optical zoom today, what would you do?

My goal is to bring a bridge camera when I'm out and about and don't want to lug my DSLR and lenses.

Stills for Birding, wildlife, landscapes, touristy.

Used SX 50
Used SX 40
New SX530
New SX720
New SX730 (some early reviews are saying the AF is slow to lock on)
New SX420
Wait until the new ones come out in August
One of the new Panasonics?

Thanks

PRO-1000 printer firmware 2.05

Recently my PRO-1000 prompted me to update the firmware. It now says it's at v2.050.

I don't know what the exact upgrades are, but the one thing I noticed is that in Photoshop there is now a "Highest" print quality listed in the printer menu, presumably a better print quality than "High."

Of course not one to want to settle for less than the best, I decided to try this setting on my next print. Well, I can't comment on the quality yet, but I can say that the print speed on "Highest" is glacially slow. And I mean, I started a 14"x21" print (on 16"x24" paper) over ten minutes ago, and the very leading edge of the paper is just now starting to come out of the front of the printer. I would estimate this will take 30-40mins to print, if not more.

Not knocking the printer or Canon. Honestly I'm pleased that they are basically saying "Well, we could make this thing print even better, if you've really got a long time to wait," rather than not being able to do that. After all, more options are better, and I have no time constraints for this print to be finished. I was fully satisfied with the quality and more or less the print speed on the "High" setting, so this is just icing on the cake. Boy, that thing sure is taking its time though... Must be placing each droplet of ink one at a time.

Two Announcement Days From Canon Next Week? [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that Canon will have product announcements on June 27, 2017 as well as the EOS 6D Mark II and perhaps the EOS Rebel SL2 on June 29, 2017. Something may have been lost in translation on the announcement dates, but all of the following products will be announced next week.</p>
<ul>
<li>We’re told a “low end” EOS M camera is coming on Tuesday, logic would suggest it’ll be a replacement for the EOS M10.</li>
<li>The Canon EOS Rebel SL2, which will have the 24mp APS-C sensor, DIGIC 7 and other evolutionary upgrades over the EOS Rebel SL1. There won’t be anything surprising in this release.</li>
<li>The Canon EOS 6D Mark II, which has mostly leaked and is receiving a pretty positive response.</li>
</ul>
<p>We don’t hear much about PowerShot cameras, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we get at least one announced next week. Don’t hold me to it though.</p>
<p>We still don’t have an announcement date for the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS, but we sure hope it’s soon.</p>
<p>This post may update after further clarification on the announcement day(s).</p>

Canon Completes Stock Buyback Ahead of Schedule

HTML:
Back on May 30, <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-inc-to-acquire-own-shares/">it was reported</a> that Canon would be buying back nearly 14 million of its own shares, and hoped to do so by July 14, 2017.</p>
<p>Today, Canon has announced that they have completed the buyback of 12,776,100 shares, which cost 49,999,720,400 yen or $449,040,488.95 USD.</p>

What's Happening on the EF-M lens front?

Back in mid-Dec 2016, the following posted as a CR2 rumor...

"With the EOS M5 finally hitting store shelves this month, lenses will likely be the next major addition to the system. While rumors about the EOS M have been pretty quiet, we have heard a few things recently.

The EF-M 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM will be discontinued in the not so distant future.

The EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM has been extremely popular in Asia, which is the #2 market for mirrorless systems.

The first “higher end” zoom for the EOS M system will be something like a 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, and that there are no constant aperture zooms coming in the near future.

We will see at least one prime lens in 2017, but that there are 3 currently being tested.

As always, as soon as we hear more, we’ll pass it on."

We're half way through 2017. Canon seems to be churning out M cameras but haven't seen much new on M lenses. I'm wondering about the "higher-end" zoom and particularly the prime.

Nothing new happening or what?
