10 great things about the upcoming 5D Mark V

You read the headline correctly... the Mark V.

Many of us have said that we will keep our 5D Mark III bodies and wait for the 5D Mark V if there is to be one.

Here are what I see as ten great things about the Mark V and it isn't even out or being talked about yet:

1. There is plenty of time to save the cash needed to make the upgrade.
2. It will probably clock 10 FPS.
3. Instead of plastic, carbon fiber will be used to cover the outside of the body except for where the grippy parts go (exotic looking).
4. When the battery door is opened there will be a whoosh sound and vapor caused by liquid nitrogen in the cooling pipes will come out. The liquid nitrogen will be used to cool the 16k video functionality and to keep a positive internal pressure compared to the outside world for dust protection.
5. Built in RF transmitter for flash.
6. Interchangeable focus screens able to be chosen at purchase. No sending the camera out to change the screen.
7. Articulating touch screen.
8. In camera IS for those non-IS lenses we own. In camera IS is disabled for the IS lenses we own or can be used if IS is disabled on the lens.
9. 100% sealed for underwater functionality with specifically designed lenses.
10. At the time of this release the 1DX Mark II will be an affordable alternative.

Zeiss Milvus 50mm f1.4 vs Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM: 10x the price and 10x better?

I made a review about these 2 lenses. Theses are controversary, to some extend extrem. But Let us start with my verdict: I will not answer the question in the title. I think everybody sees clearly: yes the Milvus 50mm f1.4 is an excellent lens. It is the best 50mm I know and meanwhile I own. And I love shooting with it. For me it is worth the investment without any doubt. It delivers results which will blow away even experts - so great!!!
But what is clear at the end of this comparison: the outstanding quality of the EF 50mm f1.8 STM: This is the Golf GTI among the lenses. The Mark I GTI. I drove that car 1977 when I got my driving license: It was unbelievable fast, great handling but also very fuel efficient. And price wise pretty reasonable, too. There is no mistake having and using this lens. And it is light. For me it is the perfect 50mm lens for traveling especially with the EOS M5. And for everybody else: It gets the "buy" recommendation even more: Today I know how good this lens is - especially after my comparison with the 10x more expensive Milvus lens. I believe -The EF 50mm f1.8 STM is optically the best 50mm lens Canon is offering - better than the 50mm f1.4 - which I own and it is worse in every regard (!) but also better than the 50mm f1.2 - beside the fact the f1.8 is less than f1.4 or f1.2 - according to DXO (ok. about DXO testings you may think what you like - but it indicates at least something).
What You should do: I do not know. This is up to you. If you love the high end contrast, low flare, low CA and sharpness even in the corners wide open: Yes the Milvus is yours if you are willing to invest ca 1200€.
If you say 1200€ is by fare too much: I can understand this, too: The EF 50mm f1.8 will give you great images, too. No doubt.
But please keep in mind: The Milvus is the one and only 50mm f1.4 lens with weather sealing....
Enjoy shooting!

Making sense of the M series cameras and lenses

For anyone a bit confused with the positioning of the M10, M6 and M5 cameras (and the 7 native EF-M lenses), here's how Canon sees them:

Canon’s expansion into the compact, interchangeable lens category hasn’t been as rapid as some competitive brands, but the 2017 launch of the EOS M6 camera rounds out the line and gives a clearly identifiable progression of models, targeting different customer preferences. These can be very effective choices for new customers, especially younger users who until now have relied upon mobile devices like smartphones for their photography — but who realize better quality and more versatility is possible, if they step up to an interchangeable lens camera. Many of the same Wi-Fi® capabilities they’ve grown to depend on for quick image sharing continue to be possible with the EOS M-series models. And, for the more experienced photographer who simply wants a more portable alternative to their DSLRs — with similar image quality, and lens interchangeability — again, the EOS M-series has much to offer them. While in no way replacing Canon’s extensive EOS DSLR line, the EOS M10, M6, and M5 broaden the options for a wide range of potential customers, with performance, features and most of all flexibility.

Digic 7: 1 stop stronger noise reduction, lens diffraction correction

http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2017/eos-77d-image-quality.shtml

DIGIC 7 processor — superior high ISO noise reduction
Previous EOS digital SLRs with APS-C size image sensors have offered 24.2 million pixel resolution, but the advent of the latest DIGIC 7 processor means even greater noise reduction than earlier EOS models, such as the EOS 80D or Rebel T6i. Full-resolution JPEG image files, when set to Standard noise reduction levels, show up to a full stop of improvement in visible digital noise, vs. the previous-generation EOS Rebel T6i. ISO 6400 files from the 77D are similar to T6i files shot at ISO 3200. And, the maximum standard ISO for still images has been raised to 25,600 (ISO expansion to the equivalent of ISO 51,200 is possible on the Rebel 77D).

Lens Diffraction Correction
Armed with additional processing power of the DIGIC 7 processor, the EOS 77D can take on additional lens aberration corrections, in-camera. New to this camera category is Diffraction Correction.
Lens diffraction is an image softening phenomenon that naturally occurs when pictures are taken at small lens apertures, like f/16 or f/22. Canon’s diffraction correction is tailored to the actual optical properties of specific lenses, and applies a very specific sharpening to directly counter this loss of detail and sharpness at high f-numbers.
And, even at more moderate and wider apertures, the same diffraction correction is able to counter the softening impact of the low-pass filtration layer on the camera’s imaging sensor, and other anomalies that may impact final image quality.
Listed as a new Lens Aberration Correction item within the camera’s red shooting menu, Diffraction Correction is active by default, but can be turned off by the photographer at any time. While the impact of this feature is usually subtle, it’s an improvement any quality-conscious still imaging photographer should examine and be familiar with.

CR newsletter - 7D II refreshment

CR wrtites: "Canon EOS 7D Mark III coming sooner than expected?

We're told that Canon will be updating the EOS 7D Mark II a lot quicker than the last product cycle, which was 5 years. It will be the first APS-C canon DSLR to shoot 4K video and we should expect it in the first quarter of 2018"

(with an wrong link.... to an lens) ;)

This rumor gets an big "+1" from me.
I use the 7DII as often as ma 5D MK IV for birding and wildlife.
My wishes: Lesser noise at higher Iso and.... more DR (in sum:better IQ)!!! , and an little raise in MPs. And: F8 on all points
AF performs fine, speed is accurate. Maybe an faster card support

Godox no response

A bit annoyed with Godox for total lack of response when asked about update support for M5 with triggers and flash the x series triggers which work so well with my 6d are not supported , I've just purchased the Xt32c manual command triggers as I hoped this would work ( no response again When asked in advance if it would work ) I can make them fire with Yongnuo triggers but loose remote power and when using as a second body to my 6d not an option to change triggers mid shoot is to much hassle , I appreciate it takes them time to develop and respond to new models etc and I really like thier products , but just rude to not reply to a polite enquiry , has anyone else had similar non - response ? I'm hoping the launch of the latest M mirrror and crop dslr will bring about a firmwear update out soon , is anyone else struggling with this ?

Firmware upgrade suggestions for all bodies, (sensible ones).

Hi Folks.
Following on from a suggestion on the 1DxII firmware update thread I thought I would start the ball rolling.
Please don't ask to make your Rebel have all the functions of a 1DxII, that is not what this is for, your Rebel has hardware limitations that prevent it ever being a 1DxII.

Dear Canon please could we have a firmware update:-
That enables a third option on the GPS menu on the 7DII where the GPS is off when the camera is off so that I don't have to go through and disable / enable it (or forget to enable it) so that the battery doesn't go flat in the bag.

It has got so bad with me forgetting to enable GPS that I have a note to place on top of the camera in the bag to remind me to turn GPS on when I get the camera out, and then it is several steps to get to it in the menu, and it is at the top of the first page of my menu!

Cheers, Graham.

Canon 80D for wildlife and BIF experiences?

Just would like to know if someone has by now used the 80D for wildlife action and BIF shooting regularly and can share his/her experiences.
Comparing this Camera to the 7D I, it has better AF, better IQ and the same frame rate. While the 7D I was extencively used for wildlife and BIF, most Canon users seem to have moved to the 7D II or a fast FF body instead of the 80D.

Sigma 24-35mm F2.0 DG HSM Art Lens Review

For the last few months I've been using the Sigma 24-35mm F2.0 DG HSM Art, and I've got to say that I'm very impressed with it. It's a lens that quite a few people aren't aware of and those that do know about it usually always ask the same question . . . is it as good as the equivalent prime lenses?

Being as I also have the Sigma 24mm and 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art prime lenses so decided to put the zoom to test against it's prime counterparts. You can see my full review at the following link . . .

"What If" - Valentine's Day Short Film (Canon C100 and Tamron 45mm)

Hey guys,
Made a short film that is sort of for Valentine's Day. Wanted to explore how a couple can reach a point when their relationship becomes.. Stagnant; when both mutually understand that they're coming to an end...

Not the happiest thing to watch during Valentine's Day, but hopefully it's something that'll touch you. A day like this is exactly when you should think about the journey you've been through and what you mean to each other - the little things in a relationship that makes a world of difference... If and before it slowly fades away.

Check it out!

Let me know what you think :)
Eugene

In terms of filming stuff, it was pretty standard - two lighting setup and a fast prime :) used lav mics for audio ahaha just check behind the scenes

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM Review (Dustin)

Hi everyone! I finished up my review of the new Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM and found it to be a solid upgrade over the previous generation lens. Nano USM is a great focus technology, though I will never be a fan of focus by wire MF (an STM/Nano USM staple).
