Why does the focal point not always flash red and beep?

I have the canon 5D3.

I find that with a number of my lenses, at times...when looking through the viewfinder, with AF on...I at times will hear the beep, but the red focal point does not turn red.

Same settings, different shot...it will beep and turn red.

It sometimes happens with focal point in center, or even if I move the focal point around the screen at times...

I cannot find a rhyme or reason why it does not always flash red and beep. Does this mean it is not getting focus properly when it only beeps but the focal point does not flash red?

I'm at single focal point setting.

I've had this happen a lot when shooting some concert venues here, even during day...and I've found at times I'm missing tack sharp focus more than I think I should....

Yes, I'm still learning my camera and likely it is user error, but hoping I can get some info an pointers here.

Thanks in advance,

Sigma 85mm Art outscores the 85mm Otus (...on a D800E)

PB has leaked non-published DXO testing again:
http://www.thephoblographer.com/2017/02/02/sigma-85mm-f1-4-beats-zeiss-otus-dxo-tests/

And somehow the highest lens rating ever given by DXO (a site that strongly biases it's overall rating on the number of pixels sitting behind the lens) was given to this lens on a 36 MP rig. Can't wait for this to be thoroughly outresolved on a 5DS and still get saddled with a lower score for another new reason. #dxo #fairandbalanced

That said, this is in line what virtually every reviewer has said: the Sigma 85mm Art could be their masterpiece. The AF will always have the spectre of lenses' past hovering around it, but by all accounts this lens is a gem.

Sigma 35 Art vs. Tamron 35 or 45?

For a nice option to sit in between an UWA and an 85mm lens would there be a winner among the Sigma 35 Art, Tamron 35 and Tamron 45 (on a Canon crop)?
67mm threads are a bonus (hence including these) and I really do like that Sigma "contrasty" look (which the Tamrons seem to have as well). Not a fan of a lot of CA even though easily removed, but still.
Leaning towards the Sigma, but figured I'd do a tiny bit more agonizing.
Thanks.

The... horrible suspicion

Dear friends
as everyone knows, the Canon lenses are built in many factories throughout Japan (and not only).
The… horrible suspicion that affects all of us is the following: all the lenses that we buy regularly in the store or on Internet are qualitatively equal or there are series A+, A-, B, etc ?
We all know that there are minimal variations even in the same models of lenses , but (how often you can read for example on Photozone), not always the quality of the lens tested is excellent.
In my long photographic activity, for example, I found poor lenses (or below the usual standard), even of Leitz...

Have you ever experienced about defective Canon lenses or just below your expectations (Optical/mechanical) ?

Old [larger sensor] cameras a cheap alternative to 80D?

Hi there!
I will probably be trading in my 20D and getting a 1D Mark II for a small upgrade fee.

Combing through the data on (yes, I'll say the D word) DXOmark I find the following chart very interesting:
A comparison between the 1D mark II, 5D classic, and the 80D.
https://gyazo.com/c0a8a31a214593391b04d114b3e49b8c

It seems that the 80D is only slightly ahead of the 1D mark II, with the 5D classic beating them both when it comes to SNR (signal to noise ratio).

Low ISO dynamic range is an area where the new 80D shines (but the 5D catches up at ISO 800):
https://gyazo.com/65e7a932bc521f819fb7583a86699b46

Tonal range is pretty close across all cameras:
https://gyazo.com/168854f962bb33f7e0365382d8689db6

Color sensitivity is similar too, with the 5D pulling ahead at higher ISOs:
https://gyazo.com/34ba154c9efaf2c27e1f35735faf30b5

MY QUESTION:
So.... has anyone tested a few of these cameras side to side? How close are these two older cameras to the 80D's image quality, and can you describe in words what the charts show (and the real world implications)?

My wild guess: 80D has less noise in the shadows, but in scenes with less shadow/dynamic range, the older cameras are pretty much the same?

I honestly thought that these older cameras would be totally destroyed by the 80D in all areas, and that the competition would not even be close (until I took a look at the charts).

TV ads for cameras?

Is anybody seeing ads on TV for camera gear? Here in the USA, I can't remember the last time I saw one. Plenty of ads for pillows, flashlights, and kitchen gadgets...

Does the industry care enough to form a consortium and remind people of the joys of dSLRs? Or even larger mirrorless? Or have smartphones sucked all the oxygen out of the living room?

5D4, any way to quickly toggle between manually set and auto ISO?

Like the topic says... Is there any setting or any button I can push or set up on the 5D4 in manual shooting mode to quickly toggle between a certain manually set ISO, and auto ISO? Sometimes I'm shooting in an environment where there is generally a good ISO that I have set, but something will suddenly change, lighting wise, and it would be nice to just hit a button and toggle to auto ISO, then hit it again and return to the ISO I was just at. It's a little slow and cumbersome to scroll all the way through the ISO scale to get to auto ISO in this circumstance, then scroll all the way back to get to the ISO I was at before.

Thanks.

Could the motor driven mirror on the 5D4 allow for an even quieter silent mode?

It seems like I'm not alone in being a little unhappy that the silent shooting mode on the 5D4 is not improved compared to the 5D3, and if anything the Mk4 is even slightly louder than the Mk3. I've read that the Mk4's mirror is now completely controlled by the motor on both the up and down stroke. Is there any possibility that the control over the mirror's motor speed might be able to be hacked within some type of third party firmware like Magic Lantern, possibly allowing the mirror to the slowed down even more to make the shooting even quieter if this is desired? Or, is this kind of direct control over the mirror something that is too deep within the firmware of the camera to be tweaked or changed?

The silent mode is a great feature to have, I just wish there was a way to adjust this so that if the user wants to trade off even more shooting speed for even quieter operation, they could do so if the situation calls for it. You know, when taking photos of some types of artistic performances, especially in a small space, even the silent shutter can still be obnoxious.

Product photography recommendations

After visiting the local bookstore and surfing the web I have not been able to find much information on product photography outside of lightboxes for eBay shoots, this is how I take great pictures with my DIY lighting, etc. My goal is to assemble my own studio for product photography of my own products. Once many of the adjustments have been worked out I would simply like to power my gear up, place the product, verify using a test shot, and shoot as many shots as necessary while minimizing post-production.

Here is what I have right now to work with currently:

  • Canon 7D
  • Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
  • Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM
  • Canon Speedlite 430EX II

  • Four (4) Einstein E640 flash units
  • Four (4) CyberSync transceivers
  • One (1) Cyber Commander
  • Three (3) 13-foot air cushioned light stands
  • One (1) 13-foot heavy duty boom stand
  • Two (2) 64" white PLM umbrellas RETURNED
  • Two (2) 64" PLM black outer cover fabrics RETURNED
  • Two (2) 64" soft silver PLM umbrellas
  • Two (2) 64" PLM white front diffusion fabrics
  • One (1) 47" foldable octabox
  • One (1) 14" x 60" foldable stripbox
  • One (1) 7-inch standard reflector
  • Four (4) Buff single light carrying bags
  • Two (2) 48-inch light stand carrying bags

My plans are to use the two 64" PLMs off to my right and left, the 7-inch reflector to control the light on the backdrop, and the 14" x 60" stripbox overhead and slightly behind the product. My next purchase will most likely be a Manfrotto background support system (9' width) and Savage 107” x 36’ Studio Blue seamless paper.

Here is the million-dollar question - what book would be my best reference to help get me up to speed quickly? I am quite visual and can really appreciate a few overhead pictorial layouts that I have seen in some other on-line lighting 101 articles. Any suggestions???

Paint (real, not light-painting!) a 430ex rt iii

Hi all,

Once again I come to forum for some help. Just spent a great weekend with my grandkids. We went to one of those "paint your own" pottery places. While on the floor trying to get a shot of the 15 month old, he reached out his brush and smeared a lovely shade of pink on the flash lens. I did wipe it off the best I could with a damp cloth. Except for a very slight tinge of color in a couple of the "grooves" near the bottom, I got it off. The flash seems to have survived the attack well (and continued to function for the rest of the day), but I'd like to get the last vestiges of color off the lens even though I don't see any effect in my preliminary PP on the images.

Were this a camera lens with a smooth surface, I'd know what to do. My question is what to use? Would lens cleaning fluid harm this plastic? Anyone ever had to deal with this or something like it?

Ah yes, another adventure! Thanks!!!

Lack of red lighted AF points 5d4; big deal?

One detail/gripe I heard mentioned about 5d3 (and 1dx) was the individual AF points don't light up red so it can be tricky to place a particular point over a subject or an eye, etc, in dim light. I see they addressed that in the 1dx2 but not in the 5d4.

Who has had 5d3 or 5d4 cameras and another camera that does have red AF points and can comment on how irritating or not irritating the in practice is the lack thereof?

Teardown: Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS II

And unlike some of their cameras, they don’t seem to have a problem putting all the right features in their consumer grade models. We were impressed by the numerous elements that could be optically adjusted, by the metal collars and rollers, pleasantly modular and robust construction, and the efficient layout. <a href="https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/01/opening-up-the-new-canon-70-300mm-f4-5-6-is-ii/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=cpm&utm_content=Opening+up+the+New+Canon+70-300mm+f/4-5.6+IS+II&utm_campaign=blog+posts">Read the full teardown</a></p></blockquote>

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II AF Setting Guidebook Now Available

HTML:
The Canon Digital Learning Center has made the AF settings guidebook for the EOS-1D X Mark II available for download.</p>
<p>From Canon DLC</p>
<blockquote><p>This downloadable .PDF guidebook from Canon’s engineers will clarify many of the details about the incredible AF system in the EOS-1D X Mark II camera. Information about the effect of different AF Cases, and various other menu settings, is spelled-out to help you make the most effective use of this camera and its powerful AF capabilities. And, keep in mind — the vast majority of these apply to the 61-point AF system in Canon’s EOS 5D Mark IV camera (which uses the exact same AF sensor), so most of this will be useful information to owners of the Mark IV camera as well. We’re confident having access to this file, on your computer or in a mobile device, will answer many of the questions which may arise as you use either of these cameras.</p></blockquote>

16-35L II focus ring sticking?

Hi folks,

My 16-35L II has a problem at the moment where the focus ring cannot be turned manually, either whilst in AF or MF mode (on the lens).
The lens still focuses perfectly in AF drive mode, but it will not move to manually focus at all, has anyone ever experienced a fault like this? and if so, what was the solution/repair bill?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated :-[

Which rechargeable AA batteries for Speedlights?

I have to replace my rechargeables for my MT24EX and my 580. I am looking for quick recycle time. Eneloop Pro or XX (2550 mAh) get good reviews. EBL 2800 mAh may be an option but are said to be thicker so a tight fit in some electronics. Anybody try those on Canon speedlights? Any other options?

I do have one of those fancy analyzer chargers (Powerex MH-C9000 WizardOne Charger-Analyzer).

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Replacement Finally Coming? [CR1]

HTML:
We’re told that an EF 50mm f/1.4 nano USM lens is finally in active development. Most of the Canon world has been waiting for a replacement to the 25 year old EF 50mm f/1.4. The rumors of replacement have flown since the beginning of this site. We usually ignore most of the 50mm rumors, but this one has some legitimacy to it.</p>
<p>The new lens will not have IS and will use the nano USM motor we’re told.</p>
<p>If this lens does come in 2017, we’re told the announcement would be late into Q4. So it looks like this will be a lens that will ship in 2018.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>
<p><strong>*Correction*

</strong><em>The post should have said “Nano” instead of “Micro” when describing the USM motor.</em></p>

EVF's

I bought myself an M5 about a month ago, and I really like it, although I find the EVF to be too bright, too saturated and has too much contrast.
It's still very useable though.

Over the weekend I bought a G5X for my father to use in the retirement home where he lives now.
He's 93 years old and is a fellow of the Australian Photographic Society (FAPS) as well as an FIAPS (Euopean equivalent) so he appreciates a nice camera.
Naturally I set it up for him and played around with it, and I was surprised at how nice it is to use, and how much BETTER the evf is on this compared to my M5.
I hope the evf in the M5 can be improved by firmware as I find it hard to believe that the cheaper and smaller camera has a far better evf.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this?
