TDP shares how it captures all of its studio shots

For all those wondering how Mr. Carnathan at TDP shoots his lovely Canon product shots, here you go:

The Leica M10 is Coming January 18

HTML:
Leica is set to announce their next digital rangefinder, the Leica M10 on January 18, 2017. Photo Rumors has put together a list of what we can expect from the new camera.</p>
<p>On the surface, it looks like they’ve made the camera smaller and simplified the button layout.</p>
<p>One interesting omission in features is that there is no video capabilities. We’re not surprised, as I doubt a lot of people shot video with their M240 and we assume the omission is a compromise they had to make to shrink the size of the body.</p>
<p>I’m a big fan of the M system, though I’ve come to realize I like autofocus and use the Leica Q instead.</p>

Sectioned Lenses

Hello All;

I recently returned from the CES in Las Vegas, where one of my activities was exploring the Canon booth.

Attached for your enjoyment are photos of two of their lenses (the 200-400 f4 w/1.4x and an united IS lenses) that were 'ninja'd' so you can see the internal construction.

(Or maybe they are the new budget version, half now, half later.)

Enjoy.

(sadly taken with my iPhone)

[General Topic]: Two bodies vs One

Hi,
to cut a long story short:
- after having started to use DSLRs five years ago with a used 5D classic,
- I switched to a much more modern 70D, but then
- I missed the full frame sensor, and since
- the 6D Mark II was not available
- I bought a used 6D.

For my recent trip to Australia, I planned to take my 70D as a mere backup body, but then ended to use both cameras: my neck was able to sustain a 70D with 70-200 F4 AND a 6D with 17-40 F/4 or 24-105 F/4. And the combo worked well! I didn't need to switch from a wide-angle lens to a tele in (sometimes) bad conditions.
[Before I eliminate the duplicates and missed shots, I have about 800 70D pictures and 1,600 6D pictures].

Originally I thought that, if the 6D Mark II had a (reasonably) good autofocus + DPAF + articulated screen, I could buy it and replace BOTH the 6D and the 70D, but now I start to have doubts: maybe two is better than one (as long as my neck resist).
BTW: I wonder if my neck could hold a heavier combo (i.e. 70D + 100-400mm AND 6D + ...).

What do you think, fellow friends from CanonRumors? If you expect to take pictures of (for example) wildlife + landscapes, do you take one camera with you (and switch lenses) or two cameras (keeping the second one in the backpack or not)?

Any rumors about 100D (SL1) replacement?

Just wanna know if there was any rumor about 100D Mark II or something like that.
The sensor and AF on 100D are outdated by nowdays, so I thought Canon could possibly do a more modern version of their smallest DSLR.

PS: Anyone knows how good were 100D sellings? Or maybe Canon made a decision to forget about smallest DSLR in the World and just focus to upgrade EOS M lineup?

Basic Newbie Studio Lighting Questions

I am very new to photography/lighting and want to use a room to setup some lights to take portraits of a toddler and baby. I have about 14ft from one wall to the other. My plan is to place a white/black backdrop on the wall and have my subjects stand/lie a few feet from the backdrop. I have one strobe on a C-Stand with a softbox that will be used as the key, another strobe on a c-stand that will be placed in the back as a hair/rim light, and a third c-stand with a piece of foam core that I plan to use as the fill. I do not need full body shots, my thought is to just setup a chair that the toddler can sit in and perhaps hold the baby, or the baby can be placed on the chair separately (a small soft toddler chair a foot or so off the ground).

1. Does this space seem like it can work for what I am trying to accomplish?
2. How much space should I plan on having my subjects away from the backdrop to not cast shadows, etc.?
3. Should I even bother with the hair/rim light in the back based on my needs, and the space I have available?
4. How far should I plan on having my key/fill from the background?

Thanks for any info!!

Anamorphic / Letterbox capture of single stills with DSLR?

I've been intrigued with the concept of the Hasselblad XPan / Fuji TX cameras, which shot two 35mm frames side by side in one exposure to generate a nearly 3:1 aspect ratio shot. I'm interested in trying it on my 5D3 if possible. But I haven't shot film since middle school, and quite candidly, have no intention of going back.

What options do we have to today to compose and capture panoramically in one exposure? And no, I don't mean cropping in post -- I mean framing a wider than 3:2 aspect ratio shot through the viewfinder.

I am a ground floor neophyte on all things video (I only shoot stills), but I seem to recall anamorphic lenses or adaptors are out there so 3:2 sensors could reel in film-ish 2.35:1 aspect ratios for video work. Would these work for stills? What would I see through the viewfinder -- a compressed width shot filling the frame or a black bars at the top and bottom? I am gunning for the latter.

What about something as simple as cropping before you take the shot? Do they sell screw-in front filters for SLR lenses with different aspect ratio opaque filters with rectangular cutouts of different aspect ratios? This seems inane (i.e. it's the same as cropping in post, but you're throwing some image away up front) but I'm actually intrigued to compose shots in a different aspect ratio, something that requires me to either blind portions of the lens with a front filter (or similarly blind the viewfinder I guess?).

I own a 16-35 f/4L IS and I've got half a mind to just grab a beat up old 77mm filter and blacken it other than a 3:1 rectangle in the center and use it as a 16mm prime, but I'm assuming there's a better/faster/higher quality/more flexible way to do this.

I'm quite clearly rambling. Any ideas? Please share some knowledge and point me in the right direction, thx.

24-105mm Mk II - lens profile & your experience

I have travelled a lot in the last weeks and shot a few thousand pics, most with the 5DIV and the 24-105 II.

My probelm: missing lens profile for Lightroom. How long will it take that an Camera raw/lightroom update will come?

My experience with this combo: The 5D IV is worth the money, even if the body is not stellar as some reviews mentioned. It is an superb working horse. Iso 4000, 1/40, f 105mm almost dark, and the shot is still viewable...
The 24-105mm II is (IMO) better than the MK 1, but still lacks in the edges (sharpness and CA). At the outer 25% on each side, the sharpness lacks. Visibly. Heavy CAs are also here. Maybe an better Lightroom profile will help.
My way will be an updated 24-xx L 2.8... if it is on the market. I need an azoom lens, as my old shoulders recognize each gram of weight on them.

Another Mention of Big White Lens Revisions [CR1]

HTML:
We’ve been told that Canon is working on revisions to “some” of the big white lenses for a 2018 release. Beyond the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-ef-600mm-f4-do-is-to-arrive-in-late-2017-cr2/">new EF 600mm f/4 DO IS</a>, which we’re told could be announced in late 2017, Canon does plan for some “minor” revisions of the current lineup. Weight reduction and a new IS system is apparently the goal from the new lenses.</p>
<p>2018 is an Olympic and World Cup year, and Canon tends to release or at least test pro gear during those times.</p>
<p>When were the current non-DO big white lenses announced?</p>
<ul>
<li>Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS 2008</li>
<li>Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x 2013</li>
<li>Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II 2011</li>
<li>Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II 2011</li>
<li>Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II 2011</li>
<li>Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II 2011</li>
<li>Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS 2008</li>
</ul>
<p>The current iterations of the 300,400,500 and 600mm lenses came 12 years after the previous versions. Which makes a 7 year upgrade cycle seem a bit quick. The possibility of a new 200 f/2L IS and EF 800 f/5.6L IS seem a bit more likely. However, the latter have the lowest volume of sales of the entire series of non-DO “big white lenses”.</p>

Canon EF 135mm f/2L IS Coming in 2017 [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that a new Canon EF 135mm f/2L IS is planned for 2017, the new EF 135mm f/2L IS would be announced after the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-ef-85mm-f1-4l-is-usm-on-the-way-cr3/">EF 85mm f/1.4L IS</a> has started shipping.</p>
<p>We still do not know the announcement date for that lens, just that it’s coming in 2017.</p>
<p>We’re going to try and get some confirmation so we can upgrade the rating.</p>

Canon 70-300L stolen in London

My Canon 70-300L has sadly been taken from my house along with some of my long term vintage bodies and lenses. My big (for me) white is recognisable by missing paint on the underside close to the mount. There is also a Canon W-II foot fitted. When taken it was in a black soft padded Think Tank pouch - If anyone sees it advertised or otherwise for sale please let me know.

I have the receipt, original packaging, and police have a record of the serial number. Other gear taken included my Olympus OM-10 with 50/1.4, 135/2.8, 24/2.8, Fotodiox adapter for OM to EF mount, and a couple of third party zooms, and Pentax S1 with 55/2 lens fitted. Both cameras were in original Olympus/Pentax ever-ready pouches.

Any news will be passed onto the police in confidence - here's wishing that it happens to no-one else.

Canon TS-E 45 flare?

I currently use my TS-E 90, TS-E 17, and TS-E 24 II lenses very often, and I'm leaning toward adding the TS-E 45 because recently I've run into a number of cases where that would have been the perfect focal length. I've long hesitated because it's the worst performing TS lens, but based on my research it does the job as long as one doesn't use it wide open - which I don't plan on.

My only wonder is - how does it handle flare? Since I do a lot of sunset + sunrise photography, this is extremely important. Has anyone taken photos with the TS-E 45 and the sun in a corner of the shot? Before purchasing I'd like to know whether it can do what I need. Thank you very much for your help.

Joshua Tree trip -- lens and location suggestions?

I've got an impromptu trip to Joshua Tree coming up soon.

I've been a number of times on quick drivethroughs, but with the recent rains and clouds overhead (!) I'm guessing this will be a very different set of visuals and I'll bring my landscape gear along. Unfortunately, this will again be a short stay -- we might have an afternoon plus perhaps golden hour and then we'd need to hit the road. We'll be there maybe 4-5 hours, tops.

I'll bring the normal landscape trappings, but I was wondering what glass to use (I run 16-200 (+2 T/C) on my 5D3) and what locations you might recommend. Hiking in to a sweet vista or going to a remote part of the park is likely not on the table for a host of reasons.

So, what spots might everyone recommend, and what end of 16-200 should I be looking to use?

Thx
