Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 & Canon 5D Mark IV incompatible?

It was somewhat unexpected, but I discovered last night that there is serious vignetting with the Tokina 16-28mm and the Mark IV. The lens itself didn't go on easily. It fit a bit too snugly. I don't know why or in what way, but it seems Canon changed something with the lens mount on the Mark IV. I never had either problems with my Mark II.

Has anyone else who has this camera+lens combo faced a similar issue? Am I going to have to get rid of my Tokina? It's such a fun lens. I was really looking forward to using it with the Mark IV.

1dx II - is it possible to map a button to a menu item?

I shoot sports semi-pro and the boss wants me to deliver him a card full of keepers, no duds.
I just got the 1dx and found the cropping function in the menu. It's awesome when you are going
through your images, find that perfect shot but it's not zoomed in enough, the crop function really
makes that shot pop.

It's so useful that I'd like to map menu->play->cropping to some button on the camera but I have
not figured out if that is possible. Seems like it would be useful for lots of stuff.

If it is not possible, it could be, it's just software/firmware, Canon could add this feature. Is there a
process for suggesting such a thing to Canon?

Flash out of sync - how can it be fixed?

Took just one flash with me (430EX II) for my xmas trip and it flashes nicely. Photos, however, end up under exposed, because the flash flashes out of sync. It actually does not flash at all while the shutter does its thing, but maybe before that. I tried the flash with 2 bodies (5D3 & 6D) and the same thing happens with both. I did reset all settings etc. No luck.

New EOS M Camera Coming in February [CR3]

<p>We’re told that Canon will announced a new EOS M camera in February, ahead of CP+ in Yokohama, Japan which starts on February 23, 2017.</p>
<p>The new EOS M camera will come in below the recently released EOS M5 and will likely retain a similar form factor to the EOS M10 and EOS M3.</p>
<p>We also received further confirmation that the two kit lenses that will be available for EOS M cameras will be the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM, and the EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM and that the EF-M 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM will be discontinued.</p>

5D IV and SIGMA 8-15 for 4k?

Hi all,

I know people don't like the 1.7 crop of 4K recording, but it does not bother me, and infact helps me out at the tele end (for wildlife shoots). For my general use, i use a canon 16-35f/4L IS, which is about a 28-60mm, which is fine for a standard lens (with nice IS too).

However, i would like to go wider for video and was thinking of the Sigma 8-16. It fits the 5D IV and since it is designed for 1.6 crop, i am assuming it would be fine in 4K with it's 1.7 crop. Has anyone here played around with this? If so, which crop lenses have you used and what are your thoughts?

Thanks,

John

16-35 2.8 III Vs 16-35 f4 is?

Hey everyone, so i've been thinking about adding the 16-35 2.8 iii to pair with my 24-70 2.8 ii and 70-200 2.8 ii is

The only problem is that i currently already own the 14mm 2.8 ii and the 16-35mm f4 is so i would probably sell the f4 or even both to fund it but was curious to those of you who own the new mk3 version why did you upgrade/pick it over the f4 is? The only difference i can currently see is the increase in sharpness and it being f2.8 but at the same time it loses the IS.

I'm not really sure in the end if it's worth it for me to upgrade but mainly just wanted your thoughts/opinion on the lens

Pros/cons Hejnar focusing rails?

I'm looking at upgrading my focusing rail. I have a dual axis (http://www.adorama.com/mcfrs.html), but hardly ever use the Y axis, and would like to have Arca plate/QR built-in. I shoot with gripped 5DsR, Zeiss 100 MP, extension rings, MP-E 65, occasionally Canon 180M, with MT-24 EX. So a rather heavy set-up. For very fine adjustments I have a Cognysis StackShot.

I like me RRS tripod etc., but their macro rails get at best lukewarm reviews. Looking at Hejnar instead.
There is the single rod stage in 8 or 10" http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/product-p/ms3_8.htm
OR
The triple rod stage with 3.5" http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/product-p/ms5p_8.htm

- What is the difference between those two designs in real life? I notice that the QR clamp is about 50 mm wide in the 8/10" version, while it is 70 mm wide in the 3.5" version. That would allow a bit more lateral adjustments without going dual rail. Is it possible to put a wider QR clamp on the 8/10" rail?
- There is a small hex screw on the base opposite the locking knob. What does it do?

I lean towards the 10" because I frequently photography "belly plants" and small mushrooms. Tripod fully open is often not going low enough, so want to get the camera off the center of the tripod. A longer rail will get me more adjustment options.

Any thoughts? Further options to consider?

Review of new Samyang 14mm f/2.4

http://gippslandimages.com.au/blog/2016/12/samyang-14mm-f2-4-xp---lens-review

First real review I've seen. It has some astro star shots and compares this new lens with the older Sammy f/2.8.
This reviewer says the new 2.4 is better than the old 2.8 for astro, and has some test shots to back his claims. Have yet to see this lens listed at a U.S. retailer, but apparently for sale in Australia. There are some images on the Samyang site that also look impressive.

AF-Assist beam from Flashgun not working in Manual mode.

Hi

So getting ready for Chrsitmas day, I want the camera in a "grab it and go" condition for variable lighting conditions, so I want flash and AF-assist from the flashgun but this is driving me nuts.

here's what happening

1. Put my 6D into "green box" mode, YN600EX-RT attached, half press the shutter and I get the criss cross pattern of little red lines so the AF works in zero light conditions. (this means the flashgun works appropriately)

2. Put the 6D into M mode (which I want) and press the back button centre point selected AF and I get no grid. I've tried checking the custom settings for setting AF-Assist beam to "ON" and it is on. I've tried setting the AF back to "all points", and linking it back to the shutter button, but still no AF-assist.

Any ideas as to what I might have set that's preventing the AF-Assist beam from working?

TIA

Sigma 12-24mm f/4 ART Review

Hi everyone, I've released my coverage on the Sigma 12-24mm f/4 ART. It's an interesting lens, though I think it will be a pretty niche product (much like the 11-24mm).

Text Review: http://bit.ly/2h9dAgU
Video Review: http://bit.ly/2i9BtqK
Image Quality Breakdown: http://bit.ly/2gUHHZn

Nice to see weather sealing finally make it to the ART series line. It will be interesting to see if people are ready to go north of $1500 (over $2000 here in Canada) for an ART lens.

Any New EF-M Lenses on the Horizon?

Considering the M5 but also looking at the Fuji X-T2. To me the biggest difference is the availability of lenses. Fuji has a big advantage. Of course it's all they do. Any rumors re: new EF-M lenses? Love to see a 35mm (~50mm equivalent) prime for starters.

While I have an arsenal of EF lenses (L and non-L) I want something lightweight a small mirrorless camera like the M5.

The EOS 6D Will Not be Replaced by a Mirrorless Camera

HTML:
A <a href="http://petapixel.com/2016/12/20/canon-release-mirrorless-full-frame-camera-instead-6d-mark-ii-report/">recent report</a> at PetaPixel that seems to have gained traction suggests that the Canon EOS 6D Mark II will be replaced by a full frame mirrorless camera. This report is 100% untrue, the EOS 6D Mark II, which we expect to announced around May/June of 2017, will be a DSLR.</p>
<p>As for a full frame mirrorless camera, we haven’t seen any solid evidence of one coming in 2017.</p>

Upgrading 6D to 5D IV or 1DX II for better autofocus and fps. Suggestions?

Hi,

I'm currently upgrading from my Canon 6D, but I'm not sure what to upgrade to. I'm an amateur that takes some portraits, landscapes and action shots. I'm finding that my 6D has enough resolution and the quality is great, except for auto-focus.

I want to be able to take photos of the dog running around the backyard and of my friends on a rope-swing with my 200mm f2L lens @ F2.0. As you can imagine that lens puts a lot of strain on the camera's auto-focus and my 6D isn't the best tool for the job (and the fps is pretty low).

- How much of an improvement over the 6D is the 5D Mark IV in regards to auto-focus, when compared to a 1DX Mark II? Like is a 5D Mark IV a 50% improvement over the 6D, and a 1DX II a 50% improvement over the 5D Mark IV, or: is a 5D Mark IV a 95% improvement over the 6D, and the 1DX II a 5% improvement over the 5D Mark IV?
(Sorry if that's confusing)

- How does the weather sealing compare?

- Any other thoughts? I'm also interested in 4K video with good auto-focus and so I'm a bit resistant to considering the 1DX original, though it probably is a good idea.

Thanks,

Mike.

1dx ii cheat sheet for 5D III owners?

Hi,

Santa was very very nice to me this year and I'm learning how to use my 1dx II. This is the first pro body I've owned, I've got a 5DIII that is my main body (and a 7D II that I've never really warmed up to).

I know my way around the 5D pretty well, still bumping my way around the 1DX II. Does anyone know of a set of notes that are for people making the jump from the 5D to the 1DX? I'm reading the manual and playing but people like to write up stuff, seems like it might be out there.

I googled (well duckduckgo-ed) and didn't find what I was looking for.

Thanks!

Zeiss Distagon very different AFMA with different temperatur?

Hi guys!

Having a frustrating issue with my Zeiss 100mm f2.0 makro-planar.

Indoors my absolute sharpest setting (identical to LiveView) is afma +20, it's very dramatic adjustment, but it's 100% consistent at getting optimal sharpness at any focusing distance.

However, going outside in colder weather +2 and up to +11 Celsius "0" is the perfect value giving me very consistent optimal sharpness.

Is it really that sensitive to temperatures??

I tried to take some "studio-shots" of the kids indoors at "0" because that worked outside, but even if pressed the shutter exactly at the beep, I couldn't nail proper focus. It's nothing to do with dslr's viewfinders being poor for mf or
Something like that, because the beep and focus lock lamp is what I rely on and it's bang on every time with the correct afma value.

New Lens Suggestion Please

Hi all,

I'm planning on buying myself a new lens for Christmas (the wife bank manager has agreed that I can get one ;D), and I'm after some advice about which to buy to pair with my 7D. As I'm after a UWA zoom, that narrows it down pretty much to three lenses (based on budget). My choices are:
  • 16-35 f/4L IS
  • 16-35 f/2.8L II
  • 17-40 f/4L
As much as I'd love the new 16-35 2.8, I simply cannot afford it. I also have absolutely no interest in buying an EF-S lens as I will be upgrading to FF within a year or so and I don't want to buy a lens simply to trade it in very soon.

My use-case is landscapes, but also I have to admit that the 2.8 would probably come in handy for school classroom events that I tend to photograph. I'd also potentially like to try some astro work, but that's not a factor in this decision due to my current location and access to anywhere without light pollution. IS isn't that big a deal for me as I am fairly steady, but on the other hand that new f/4 looks razor sharp.

My only concern with the 2.8 is that I've heard it can be fairly soft, as with the 17-40. I'm not a pixel peeper by any means, but I do appreciated image quality.

I'd love to try these lenses out too, but my location and the efficiency of the Chinese postal system leaves me in a position where I can't return a lens unless it is actually faulty, and rental is not an option here. Hence this post asking for suggestions.

Thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas to all!
Malcolm

Review: Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the brand new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art series lens. It looks like the accolades for this lens are going to continue as more reviews come out.</p>
<blockquote><p>With impressive 85mm f/1.4 image quality in a beautiful, well built lens with autofocus and a reasonable price, this is the portrait lens that a lot of photographers have been waiting for. While the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens, overall, is one of the greatest 85mm lenses ever made, the lack of image stabilization and bit of axial CA/spherical aberration/spherochromatism leave the door cracked open just slightly for a competitor to one-up it. But, for now and for most people, this is the 85mm lens to get. Most, if not all, of your portrait and other 85mm needs will be well served with this lens. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Sigma-85mm-f-1.4-DG-HSM-Art-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>We’re expecting to see a Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS some time in 2017, which will likely give this Sigma a run for its money, but for a price.</p>

Is an 8K EOS-1D C Replacement Coming? [CR1]

HTML:
<p>With the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/deal-canon-eos-1d-c-3999-reg-7999/">recent discount</a> on the C-Log, 4K equipped Canon EOS-1D C DSLR, there has been a lot of chatter about a possible replacement.</p>
<p>The latest is that we’ll see an EOS-1D C Mark II in 2017 and it’ll be capable of shooting 8K.</p>
<p>This is the first we’ve heard of such a camera in development, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. The original EOS-1D C, while a great camera with great video quality, didn’t sell all that well at its launch price of $14,999.</p>
<p>There are very few 8K cameras on the market that you can buy, ARRI doesn’t even have one yet. We’re not sure Canon is going to be introducing 8K into a DSLR, especially after showing their 8K prototype at the Canon EXPO which will likely end up a Cinema EOS style camera. In an interview with Tim Smith around NAB, it didn’t seem like we’d be seeing an 8K consumer product from Canon any time soon.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>If an 8K replacement to the EOS-1D C does happen, it couldn’t just be an EOS-1D X Mark II with the capability added, as the sensor doesn’t have enough resolution. We suspect that we’ll see 8K addressed in some way at NAB in April of 2017.</p>
<p>Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is the first feature film shot in 8K using the RED Weapon. <a href="https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/684830923913859080">¹</a></p>
<p>For the moment, we put this at highly unlikely for 2017, but If we hear anything from trusted sources on the possible development of an EOS-1D C Mark II, we’ll let you know.</p>

Will the 1DX II disappoint me for landscapes? vs 5DIV vs A7rII

So I have been thinking to jump ship to Sony but today I got a very good deal on a brand new 1DX II for $3,700USD. Only have 2 days to decide.

I shoot mainly sunset and sunrise landscapes and time lapses. Second some video and last some general all around use.

I'm not sure if the 20 MP will disappoint me on a 2016 camera. The resolution and physical size are the only things holding me back. For $700 USD less I can buy the 5d IV, or $1300 less the A7RII, also a very good deal.

What do you think?
