Canon Talks Global Shutter and High Dynamic Range

HTML:
Canon has released a paper for the IDEM conference that shows a multi readout approach that will allow for global shutter and higher dynamic range in future sensor design.</p>
<blockquote><p>Canon researchers will discuss high-resolution, large-format CMOS imaging technology for use in high-performance cameras large enough to take photographs and videos at ultra-high-definition resolution.</p>
<p>The Canon researchers developed a new architecture that enables the readouts of multiple pixels to be accumulated and stored in memory, and then processed all at once. This technique enabled the implementation of a global shutter while also delivering excellent noise and dark current performance and high dynamic range (92dB at a standard 30fps frame rate). <a href="http://www.btbmarketing.com/iedm/">Read more at IEDM</a></p></blockquote>
<p>Back in August, <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-announces-cmos-sensor-with-global-shutter/">Canon announced that they have developed a global shutter</a> equipped CMOS sensor.</p>

300/2.8 rear drop-in holder for 52 mm screw availability/discontinued?

I'm looking for the rear drop-in filter holder for 52 mm screw-in filters for the 300/2.8 (same as for several other big whites), but it is out of stock everywhere, and it is not even listed on the Canon website.

Is this a short term backlog, or has this been discontinued? I'm about to get my 5D2 converted to full spectrum, and wonder whether I should even order the 52 mm IR filters.

I don't think there are alternatives. I don't think there are IR gel filters, and reversibly modifying the pol drop-in does not sound straight forward either.

DSLR Controller is back!

It was a very looooooong wait (almost two years) for a new release of DSLR Controller and it finally arrived.

DSLR Controller v1.00 released

No longer 0.x, and no longer BETA
The transition from 0.x to 1.x has no special meaning. This is just the next release. The BETA moniker has been dropped, because even if using USB on Android will never be fully reliable, USB host availability is now relatively common even on mid-range devices... it only took 5 years.

5D Mark IV and 80D support
This version has been specifically updated to support the new member of the 5D family. The 80D has been out a bit longer, but as the reported issues were very similar to those seen on the 5D4, I expect the 80D to be working fine now as well.

There were quite a few minor changes to the protocol, only one of which really broke the app. I thought the other changes were worth delaying the update for, though.

NFC support
DSLR Controller now supports initiating connection by tapping the Android device to the camera's NFC tag (if present). The app must be launched and on-screen before doing this or Canon's app (or the Play store) is launched instead. See the updated Wi-Fi connection guide for further details: http://dslrcontroller.com/guide-wifi.php

Liveview resolution support
Depending on the camera, changing the liveview resolution may be available only in Wi-Fi/Smartphone mode, also in Wi-Fi/EOSUtility mode, or also in USB mode. The app now supports all these possibilities as well, where it previously only supported this in Wi-Fi/Smartphone mode.

Note that when using any of the display filters, it is strongly recommended to use the high resolution mode, as these filters are applied on the liveview image, not the raw image in the camera. Lowering the resolution may significantly improve latency and FPS, especially when using Wi-Fi, though.

Continuous AF (photo) and Movie Servo AF (video) support
These are represented in-app by the autofocus mode set to AF-S (next to the AF, R-MF, and MF options). Unfortunately, advanced Movie Servo AF settings available on the 5D4 are not remotely configurable, and must be adjusted on the camera (annoying for videographers).

If you are using both the camera and the app simultaneously to change settings, notice that the camera-on-screen 'Servo AF' button only pauses it, while the button in the app truly enables or disables it. The app is not aware of this pausing, as the information is not sent to the app by the camera.

It should also be noted that on the 5D4 you can switch to AF-S mode in the app even when in photo mode and it works, but the camera offers you no way to turn it on or off (contrary to for example the 70D). I'm assuming this is an oversight in the 5D4 firmware - or I'm blind.

Video format support
While detection for the 5D4's new video formats has been added, unfortunately the HDR, HFR, 24P and NTSC/PAL modes are not configurable remotely. You will have to change these settings on the camera, while the app is only able to set formats that fall within those configured parameters (annoying for videographers).

Android 7.0 support
While the previous version of the app did pretty much just work on Nougat, there was some quirkyness with the USB permission, and Android logged complaints regarding some of the used shared libraries. These issues have been corrected.

Connection issues
I've added a few popup notifications with information as to why a (Wi-Fi) connection failed, which can be helpful if you're having trouble getting the camera and the app to work together.

Mirrorless cameras
The original EOS M was completely crippled, remote control wise. I have not tested the M2 or the newer M10, but I've had some minor success connecting the M3 using NFC/Wi-Fi (using USB will strangely not let you modify any settings). The M3 is still marked as officially unsupported because a lot of logic in the app expects a device with a mirror. I do not expect to revisit the M series until I have the new M5 in-hand.

Older cameras
Unfortunately, my 50D has died, and I don't have a VxWorks camera at all anymore. If you are using a camera from 2008 or older, please let me know (on XDA or via e-mail, not by commenting here) if things have stopped working.

General stability
It should be noted that these newer cameras are actually more sensitive to protocol errors than the previous models. While I have done my best to mitigate, please keep a look out for errors and crashes to functionalities that worked fine in the past, and be sure to specify your camera model when reporting them.

EOS 80D Focusing Suggestions?

My new 80D seems to be pretty quick and accurate with phase detect AF for subjects that are motionless, but I'm having abysmal results with our toddler in action. I've tried most of the setting combinations.

As reference, I compare to my success with my 60D and 5DIII. Of course I'd be thrilled if it could come close to the 5DIII, though I know that is unreasonable, but at this point, I'm not getting nearly as many keepers as on the 60D!

To be fair, I haven't yet put on top notch glass, so far for the "action" having used an ef 50mm 1.4 and an ef 85mm 1.8, but the 85mm is quick and dependable on the 60D and 5DIII. YES, I've performed AFMA. No problem with sharp focus on motionless subjects, as stated.

Any tips? Thanks! :D

Stepping up to 1DX or 5D IV

I would like to hear some advices from 1DX, 5D IV users that are into wildlife photography.
I am planning to aquire a new rig for my mostly wildlife photography. Currently, I have been using 1D mark IV which I really love for its 10 fps and rigidness, ergonomy, etc. I also kept my previous camera, a 6D for landscapes and extra low light situations. While the 1D IV has become my primary camera for several reasons, lacking those 4 mp is very noticeable coming off the 6D's 20 mp sensor. I often feel like ending up with pics lacking some fine details, especially if the subject does not fill the entire frame, this is something I never felt with the 6D.

So I'm considering to sell both cameras to step up to 1DX or 5D IV. Now the choice gets tough here. I prefer the 1DX for ergonomy, good high iso performance, 12 fps, reasonable price, weather sealing. I'm certainly one of those guys who once has experienced the 1D series, don't want to move from there. However, 5D IV features 30 mp, that certainly gives a LOT more fine detail compared to 1D IV, better DR, similar if not better high iso, built in GPS, Wifi. I must also say that I shoot mostly mammals that do not necessairly require 12 fps, I could probably live with 7 fps.

So how would you guys decide? Thanks for your inputs in advance!

Canon shows +8% increase in ILC unit sales 3Q 2016

I quote:

http://www.canon.com/ir/conference/pdf/conf2016q3e-sum.pdf

As for interchangeable-lens cameras, in the third quarter, sales increased 8% to 1.37 million units
thanks to mirrorless models and new DSLRs

Canon, through the launch of new products, has been working to stimulate latent demand for
interchangeable-lens cameras. For the new DSLRs that were launched in the first half of this year,
like the EOS 80D, which offers improved capacity to track fast-moving subjects, and the EOS Kiss
X80 (EOS Rebel T6 in the Americas, EOS 1300D in Europe) with its enhanced ability to connect to
networks, have been enjoying strong sales. In addition, the EOS 5D Mark IV, the core model
incorporating a full-size sensor that was launched in September has been contributing to sales since
its launch thanks to the well-balanced basic performance it offers in terms of still and video shooting.

Furthermore, for mirrorless cameras, following the EOS M3, we launched an affordably priced
model, the EOS M10 last year. We continued to post strong results through carrying out focused
marketing activities by strengthening online advertising and our sales network. We were successful
in generating new demand among groups that have had little familiarity with inter-changeable lens
cameras in the past, such as women and young generations.
Enhancing our lineup in this way, we are
growing our mirrorless camera market share in Europe and Americas, but especially in Asia, and this
is now beginning to serve as an underpinning factor that supports our presence within the entire
interchangeable-lens camera market

Huh. Stupid Canon knows what they are doing?

Growth rate YoY is -1% .. in other words, in a rapidly declining market - Canon is selling the same amount as they did a year ago.

Canon has sold now 4.37 Million ILC's through the end of September. We'll find out in a week on CIPA data, but that should amount to around or over 50% of all ILC's shipped this year.

Can anyone help a flash neophyte? 430EXii + 430EXiii-RT

I am exploring flash more and more. I am not ready for light stands, umbrellas and the like but have progressed from bounce to on-flash diffusers and now want to try 2 Speedlights together - one on camera and one off. So I got myself the above 2 units to try with the crazy idea that I'd use the 430EXiii-RT on the hotshoe and trigger the 430EXii as a radio slave.

I've been on multiple threads here, looked at other forums and websites and have been through both manuals but cannot get this to work leaving me with 2 possible explanations: 1) This cannot be done with these two flashes and I'd need some other trigger, or 2) I am just missing some step or setting despite my efforts.

So far, I can set up the RT as a master, can switch channels and groups, and change the ID. I can, on the 430EXii, set the same channel and group and set it to "slave" mode. Both are on ETTL. But, the slave will not fire.

Please tell me I am stupid and missed some steps (go easy on me) or that this cannot be done.

Thanks.

Since no one talks about it, I figure I'll start a thread:

Canon 10-18mm lens, IS & AF off
Using an external wired intervalometer (delay start 20 min, with power down set at 1min)
screen folded inward with image review turned off
5 second interval

Filled a 64gb card with 2,035 images and hadn't yet died. 440 shots per battery my left foot...
From LensRentals "the new LP-E17 battery is rated for 440 shots per charge"

1 Ds mk II with 14mm lens (af off)
A/C adapter running off Vagabond Mini
3 hours, shot every 5 seconds (to a 128gb Delkin CF card)

didn't even cause the battery to drop to 75%

EOS 5D Mark IV review--from the trenches

Very refreshing review, with many sample shots taken from actual weddings (rather than taken just for the review!). Seems sincere, and it was written after being used for five weddings.

And, oh my goodness, no hysteria when glitches were encountered!

Enjoy!

Side note: Google seems very poor recently for finding reviews of bodies and lenses. Same stale few results are returned, but mostly, way mostly, advertisements. Andy Davison's review came up when I searched Bing.

Canon makes non-profit CDPs Climate A-List for first time

HTML:
<strong>TOKYO, October 25, 2016</strong>—Canon’s initiatives to tackle climate change have been recognized by the international non-profit organization CDP,1 based in the United Kingdom, earning the Company its first inclusion on the Climate A List.</p>
<p>Since 2003, the CDP has evaluated major companies worldwide on their efforts to tackle climate change. The evaluations are based on information disclosed in response to questions sent to the companies2 regarding business risks and opportunities associated with greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. In 2016, approximately 6,000 businesses were assessed, of which 500 were Japanese. The evaluation ranks companies on a scale from A to F, with A being the highest, and Canon was declared one of the 193 companies in the world to make the A List.</p>
<p>Under its Action for Green environmental vision, introduced in 2008, Canon set a goal of annually reducing lifecycle CO2 emissions for each product by 3%, and is proactively making efforts through such initiatives as energy-saving activities at manufacturing bases, a modal shift in distribution, reduced energy consumption during product use, product remanufacturing,3 reusing parts and recycling consumable goods. As a result, in 2015, lifecycle CO2 emissions per product were approximately 30% of those in 2008—successfully achieving an average reduction of approximately 5% a year.</p>

Canon Full Frame Mirrorless [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told once again that a full frame mirrorless camera is definitely in the works at Canon. As we’ve also said before, the biggest challenge to the design team is making good use of EF mount lenses. There will not be a 4th mount (EF, EF-S, EF-M) added to the Canon ILC lineup.</p>
<p>It’s possible we’re going to see a full frame mirrorless fixed lens camera from Canon before we see an ILC full frame mirrorless. We were told a while ago that such a camera was in development and apparently that is still ongoing.</p>
<p>The product roadmap for mirrorless from Canon has no been finalized and there’s a good chance we’re going to hear a lot of conflicting information over the coming months. The source doesn’t expect any sort of full frame mirrorless announcement until the end of 2017 at the earliest.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>
