Zeiss Announces Three New Milvus Series Lenses

HTML:
<em>The lens family with manual focusing for DSLR cameras is now also available with focal lengths of 15, 18 and 135m</em></p>
<p><b>OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 08/09/2016</b> – Two super-wide angle lenses, the ZEISS Milvus 2.8/15 and ZEISS Milvus 2.8/18, and the telephoto lens ZEISS Milvus 2/135 have expanded this family of manual focus lenses for DSLR cameras, bringing the total number of ZEISS Milvus focal lengths to nine. “The ZEISS Milvus family of lenses is an invaluable investment for the future due to its excellent imaging quality and its large range, which now covers 15 to 135 millimeters,” says Christophe Casenave, product manager at ZEISS Camera Lenses. Delivery of the new ZEISS Milvus lenses begins at the end of October 2016.</p>
<p><b>For high-end DSLR cameras</b>

“The ZEISS Milvus lenses have been designed in particular to fulfill the requirements of today’s powerful digital cameras and those of the future thanks to their high imaging performance, even in difficult lighting situations,” says Casenave. The new lenses are characterized by a harmonious bokeh and very high degree of flare control due to the T* anti-reflective coating from ZEISS. Further optimization of the lens coating has also ensured less likelihood than ever of ghosting, flare or shading effects, even in critical lighting situations. And all ZEISS Milvus lenses come with a floating elements design, which compensates imaging errors at different distance settings.</p>
<p><!--more-->

<b>ZEISS Milvus for video</b>

The new ZEISS Milvus lenses also allow the user to create high-quality film shoots with a pleasing cinematic bokeh. “Due to their extremely high contrast rendition, the lenses fulfill the most modern video standards of 6K and higher, and have uniform color characteristics,” said Casenave. All ZEISS Milvus lenses have a focus ring with a very large rotation angle to enable precise focusing, and are made of comfortable rubber to ensure a good grip while focusing. The De-Click function on lenses with a ZF.2 mount lets cinematographers set the aperture in a soft and infinitely variable way so they can work professionally in changing lighting conditions. The ZEISS Milvus lenses’ robust full-metal barrel ensures long and reliable usage. In addition, the lenses are protected against dust and spray water. The robust metal lens shade is an integral part of the overall product design and included with all ZEISS Milvus lenses.</p>
<p>The new focal lengths of the ZEISS Milvus family are also compatible with the ZEISS Lens Gears, providing filmmakers with additional value-add. The ZEISS Lens Gears, which are made of high-quality aluminum with a hardened surface coating, slide into the respective lens and are attached to the focus ring by turning two counter-rotating rings through a simple mounting procedure.</p>
<p>The new ZEISS Milvus lenses in summary:</p>
<p><b>ZEISS Milvus 2.8/15:</b>

This super wide-angle lens with a field of view of 110 degrees allows every photographer to consciously compose using extreme perspectives. The lens has excellent imaging performance – even with an open aperture – thanks to the correction of color errors. Color fringing and distortion are minimal. This is all thanks to a ZEISS Distagon lens design with 15 lens elements in 12 groups, including two aspheric lenses, special glass with anomalous partial dispersion, and the floating elements design. A removable lens shade and the 95-millimeter filter thread also make this lens the ideal companion for special applications with additional slide-in filter holders.</p>
<p><b>ZEISS Milvus 2.8/18:</b>

This compact super-wide angle lens with a newly calculated ZEISS Distagon optical design has 14 lens elements in 12 groups, including two aspheric elements. The ZEISS Milvus 2.8/18 has a short close-up distance of 0.25 meters and internal focusing. With an angular field of 99.9 degrees, this lens is the ideal companion for landscape and architectural photography, as it allows creative shots to be taken using unusual perspectives. The filter thread has a diameter of 77 millimeters. The ZEISS Milvus 2.8/18 delivers outstanding imaging performance and very good distortion correction.</p>
<p><b>ZEISS Milvus 2/135:</b>

This fast telephoto lens delivers excellent correction of all color errors. Thanks to a large aperture and pleasing bokeh, it is the perfect lens for portrait photography from a medium distance. The angular field is 18.7 degrees. The short minimum object distance of 0.80 meters makes this lens even more versatile. It has an optical design with 11 lens elements in eight groups and, like the ZEISS Milvus 2.8/18, a filter diameter of 77 millimeters.</p>
<p><b>Price and availability</b>

The delivery worldwide of the three new lenses will begin at the end of October 2016. The lens shade is included with the corresponding lens. Sales prices are EUR 2,699 (including 19% German VAT) or 2.699US$ for the ZEISS Milvus 2.8/15; EUR 2,299 (including 19% VAT ) or 2.299US$ for the ZEISS Milvus 2.8/18; and EUR 2,199 Euro (including 19% German VAT) or 2.199US$ for the ZEISS Milvus 2/135. For ambitious cinematographers and photographers, a set solution is also available for up to six ZEISS Milvus lenses. A discount of 8% is available with the purchase of three to four lenses. Purchasing more than five lenses gives the user a 10% discount.</p>

5DMk4 Dual Pixel Raw Seems To Work From 200mm Onwards!

Dear friends,

after watching a totally disappointing performance of Canon's DPRaw reviewed by Tony Northrup, searching "Youtube", i came across a really interesting video shot by south african photographer Clinton Lubbe, which demonstrates the capabilities of DPRaw (or the lack of them) from 200mm all the way up to 600mm.

It seems (at least as depicted on my professionally calibrated 27inch EIZO screen) that DPRaw has quite an effect at these focal lengths; it looks like post processing AFMA to my eyes. Just play the video at 1080p resolution in order to have a clear view of the results.

Here is the link, come to your own conclusions

All my best wishes from a very sunshiny part of Greece.

Canon 7DMKII vs Canon 5D MKIV - Image quality

I know that the new 5D is not out yet but generally speaking, does the 5D have better image quality? So far for the most part I am happy with the 7DMKII and typically get very sharp photos and can zoom in a bit and still have good quality photos, depending on the lens. I've never used a full frame camera and am wondering if I should go for the 5D. Are there are side by side image comparisons of real photo situations of the 2?

I shoot portraits and scenics.

I shoot a lot of the Canon 35 1.4 MKII and love it; this may be an ignorant question but I'm assuming with full frame, I would need to get close to my subject to get the same affect as I would on my 7DMKII?

5D Mark IV Diffraction Correction

I was watching Canon's detailed overview of the new 5D Mark IV and was intrigued by one feature mentioned.

That feature is "Diffraction Correction" which he said enhances the sharpness by cancelling the effects of the low-pass (anti-aliasing) filter.

The video can be found here:

Skip to the 2:45 mark to hear him talk about it.

At last DP Review are honest!

So at long last DPR have actually gone public with what many of us have known for a while, they are producers of paid infomercials for Nikon and Amazon.

This is sponsored content, created with the support of Nikon.

Now I don't have an issue with that, they can be whatever they want, but don't get on your high horse and preach impartial and unbiased opinions on the one hand and work for Nikon and Amazon with the other.

I am blessed!

Sometimes it pays to be blessed...My 1Ds3 would not start after 4 months of inactivity and battery
would not charge.

Sent the camera to the New Jersey repair center last Saturday...email first thing this morning with a
$250 estimate... called them and explained the problem, the gentleman on the phone (my bad that I
don't recall his name) said he would check and call me back in a couple of hours, which he did. He called
back and said the technician had serviced said camera and was shipping it back at no charge, in spite of
it being out of warranty. Bad battery was culprit, which I gotta replace.
I bought that camera in 2008, never joined their pro club or anything else.

It does pay to be blessed...and good looking.

Patent: What the Digital Display on the Upcoming EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS II Might Look Like

HTML:
The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II is expected to be announced some time in 2016, and<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/more-talk-about-the-canon-ef-70-300mm-f4-5-6-is-ii-cr2/"> we first reported that it would be the first Canon lens to have a digital display</a>.</p>
<p>Below are some images from a patent for the technology that likely shows what will be displayed on the lens’ digital display.</p>
<p>By the images below, it seems the lens will be able to show distance meter, as well as lens shake on various axis’. I imagine you’ll be able to cycle through the desired displays with the press of a button on the lens.</p>

DXO *finally* tests lenses on the A7R II

After more than a full year of declaring the A7R II as the finest FF sensor ever made, DXO finally got around to testing a lens on it. New lenses came out from Sony well after the A7R II came out and were tested at DXO -- but only on the original A7R, much to the Sony fanboys' chagrin.

Well, wait no longer. Here's a first pass on 18 lenses tested on it, including two of the G Master big pickle jar pro lenses they recently released: https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Sony/A7R-II---Lenses-tested

Of note:

  • The previous 9 highest resolving lenses were (not surprisingly) mounted on the 5DS R. No longer. Three Zeiss primes on the A7R II have cracked the top 10: Sony 90mm macro, Zeiss 55mm f/1.8, and the Zeiss Loxia 21mm f/2.8.

  • They have not yet adaptored any non-FE-mount glass to the A7R II. Would be interesting to see someday.

  • Comparison of the three major 24-70 f/2.8 lenses.

  • As the Otus lenses + Nikon + Canon + Sony doesn't lend itself to a 3 headed comparison, here are all the 85mm f/1.4 (or faster) lenses -- apparently the Sony G is 'Otus grade'.

  • Haven't found any eye-rolling DXO overall score inflation for a lesser performing lens.... yet. (The day is young.)

More to come on this, I'm sure. This is just the tip of the spear. I'm curious to see how their 70-200 f/2.8 G lens performs.

5D Mk4 Dynamic Range Analyzed From RAWs.

Dear friends,

I just found this topic at "fredmiranda.com". I'm not sure if it's legit or not but seems quite OK to me.
http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1447974

I'm really curious of some real, complete first reviews, although i'm pretty sure i won't get the 5D Mk4 but i'll go straight to 1Dx mk2 (if it's not crippled with soft focus issues as i'm reading in some topics)!

All my best wishes from shiny, summery Greece.
Yiannis A.

P.S: I just found the topic while "googling" for reviews of 5D Mk4.

Sigma Announces New Cine Lenses

HTML:
<strong>Amsterdam, The Netherlands — September 7, 2016</strong> – The SIGMA CORPORATION is pleased to announce that it will enter into the cinema lens market with the release of its SIGMA CINE LENSES, designed specifically for cinematography. In the world of digital film production, there is an increasing demand for higher resolution, and SIGMA’s new lineup of high-performance lenses is compatible with the latest, high-resolution digital cinema cameras. SIGMA has developed its own production system by establishing the required technology for mass production of high-performance lenses for ultra-mega-pixel shooting. The company feels this valuable new lens line could create a fundamental change in digital film production, and provide a new solution for cinematographers.</p>
<ul>
<li>Unbeatable value – the highest optical performance in its class and outstanding compact design</li>
<li>Wide range of lenses for professional use</li>
<li>Optimized for the latest digital moviemaking technology</li>
</ul>
<p>For the first phase, SIGMA will release two zoom lenses in Japan and the USA for EF and E mount camera systems. Furthermore, another zoom lens and five prime lenses will be released to the market in sequence from 2017 onward. SIGMA plans to develop additional zoom and prime lenses as well as add support for PL mount camera systems. The latest release information will be sequentially updated on its official website.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>High Speed Zoom Line</strong>

High Speed Zoom Line offers the constant aperture of T2 throughout the zoom range, and the optical performance is ready for high-resolution shooting such as 6K – 8K. Furthermore, while offering the highest image quality in its class, the High Speed Zoom Line has a compact construction and offers amazing value.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/specs_1.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-26735" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/specs_1.jpeg" alt="specs_1" width="590" height="442" /></a></p>
<p><strong>FF Zoom Line </strong>

FF Zoom Line is compatible with a full-frame image circle, and the optical performance is ready for high-resolution shooting such as 6K – 8K. It provides a rare option for cinematographers since very few lenses can cater to the requirements of the latest digital cinema cameras’ image sensor, which is larger than Super 35, and expand the range of compatible cameras. This is the cinema zoom lens offering the highest image quality and compact design. This lens is not available in PL mount.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/specs_2.jpeg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-26736" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/specs_2.jpeg" alt="specs_2" width="590" height="442" /></a>

<strong>FF High Speed Prime Line

</strong>The lineup ranges from 20mm to 85mm, and all five lenses are T1.5. They are compatible with full-frame sensors and, while being more compact, can offer superior resolution than other high-end prime sets do. With the five prime lenses from FF High Speed Prime Line, there is no need to change the lighting to shoot a variety of cuts. These lenses bring a consistent level of light to the production and offer greater consistency with regards to the film’s look and color/contrast before it enters post-production.

Each CINE lens model is weatherproof and has luminous paint markings to aid in changing and operating the lens in the dark. It touts a long focus rotation of 180 degrees and is guided by cams for smooth operation and accuracy. The CINE lens design features standardized essentials such as an 82mm front for ND filters* and a 95mm front diameter for matte box use and standard gear positions for accessories like follow focus. They also include a manual linear iris control and electronic mounts that provide vital camera metadata. Each lens is manufactured and inspected in the Sigma factory located in Aizu, Japan.</p>

Canon Launches First 4K UHD Broadcast Studio Zoom Lens

HTML:
<em>UHD-DIGISUPER 27 Provides Excellent Handling and Optical Performance With Resolution Surpassing 4K</em></p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>MELVILLE, N.Y., September 6, 2016</strong> – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today introduced the UHD-DIGISUPER 27, a high-optical-performance2 studio zoom lens for 4K UHD broadcast cameras employing 2/3-inch sensors. In addition to achieving a level of resolution surpassing that of 4K from the center to the peripheral areas of image field across the entire focal range, the UHD-DIGISUPER 27 features the same body size and approximate weight3 as its HDTV predecessor, the DIGISUPER 27. The lens has a 6.5–180mm focal length range that can be ideal for a wide variety of studio productions that include news programs and variety shows as well as major events, supporting the emerging proliferation of 4K UHD content. With the release of this new 4K UHD studio lens, Canon is expanding its 4K UHD broadcast lens lineup to meet the needs of a broadening range of industry users.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><!--more--></p>
<p dir="ltr">Deployment of new glass materials and new optical coatings coupled with advances in manufacturing precision have helped lower chromatic and monochromatic aberrations to less than half those of conventional HDTV lenses. The UHD-DIGISUPER 27’s excellent color reproduction has been tailored to support the recently standardized UHD wider color gamut which, in turn, supports the creation of incredibly immersive visual content. Additionally, the UHD-DIGISUPER 27 employs a built-in 2x extender that allows users to increase the zoom range two-fold, realizing a 360mm focal length at the telephoto end and, even at its increased maximum focal length, the lens enables superb imaging expression with outstanding resolution performance exceeding that of 4K.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The new Canon UHD-DIGISUPER 27 features a new easy-to-hold design for easy installation for enhanced usability. Furthermore, because traditional HDTV zoom lens controllers can be used to control the electric zoom and focusing operations, users can make the transition to 4K UHD content creation using systems they are already familiar with.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Canon UHD-DIGISUPER 27 is expected to go on sale in March 2017. For more information, please visit <a href="https://www.usa.canon.com/">usa.canon.com</a>.</p>

Hi everyone.

Was wondering about it. Having in mind 5DsR I am very inclined to combine the Sigma 50s ART with a sharper 5D4 AA filter-less.

What do you think? Any proposal on an alternative answer would be added. Additional opinions and advises would be also highly appreciated.

Some additional info: General primary body mostly for stills. Wild life, sport, Portraits, Events, low light, time-laps.

The main reason to ask: In the end of this video about 1:23 (5D4 vs 5DsR & 3:50 (5D4 vs Nikon 7200)...

My light kit is not so light..........

Given the number of experiences reflected in these forums, it is always great to get some opinions. I just finished packing my probable kit for an Ethiopian trip. My main interest is, as always, people / street / cultural shots. I do some landscapes photos but they are not my main interest. I almost never use flash nor do I do any sort of poses, but try to capture images of folks in their day to day environment. My most commonly used gear is the 5Diii with a 24 - 70 but I will change out to my 16-35 or something longer if that fits my needs. I try to keep it simple and relatively light.

But, this trip took quite a bit of planning and will definitely be a "once in a lifetime" type of journey and I don't want to leave anything to chance. So, my kit just grew.............

Here's what I've packed:
  • 5Diii with 4 batteries, charger, etc.
    24-70 f/2.8 ii
    16-35 f/4
100-400 mk ii (really glad I had this in Tibet although on other trips I took a 70-200)
M3 (OK, I swore I'd never get one after the M1 experience but I felt the need) with 3 batteries
    EVF for M3
    EF-M 22
    EF-M 18-55
    EF-M / EF Adapter
    40mm Pancake
    CF and SD cards
    CPL's for all
    A small table tripod
RRS TQC-14 with a Markins head
The usual things (blower, brush, microfiber cloth) we all use

Remarkably, I got everything except the tripods and the rocket blower into my Thinktank Streetwalker! I already owned all of this except for the M3. My thought process is I'll use my usual FF gear and have the M3 as a backup body. I'll also use the M3 for some short videos of festivals. I gave the M3 a workout this weekend and going through the photos, it certainly is not a replacement for my mirrorslapper but I got some decent shots.

So am I thinking sensibly here? I need to keep the dimensions of the kit down for internal flights on small planes. Based on the posted limits, my Kiboko is too large. The Streetwalker works but boy it is full.

AFMA for Beginners

Now that I have the 500L and 300L, I need to do some AFMA. Never did this before as I found the focus of my other lenses were on point, but want to make sure my new toys are good to go.

Should I go out and start using it before doing AFMA? Or is it generally accepted that AFMA must happen before using these longer tele lenses? Also, any tips? FoCal Standard, Plus, or Pro?

*UPDATED* Is This The Canon EOS M5?

HTML:
<strong>*UPDATE*</strong>

We’re told by a good source that this does indeed look the EOS M5, which we expect to be announced late next week.</p>
<p>The LCD only flips vertically, not to the side like the EOS 80D.</p>
<p>You can read what we know about the EOS M5 <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-m5-coming-before-photokina-cr3/">here</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Original Post:</strong>

These sketches (or Photoshop filtered images) of a Canon camera have appeared on <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=30681.msg621061;topicseen#new">our forum</a> and in our inbox. We have been unable to confirm their authenticity at the time of publishing, but we will update the post once we hear if these are legit or not.</p>
<p>We have been told that the EOS M5 would have ergonomic updates, such as a larger grip as well as an EVF.</p>
