A New Full Frame Zoom Coming in 2016 [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that Canon will announce a new full frame zoom lens following the announcement and shipping of the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM which <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-ef-16-35mm-f2-8l-iii-coming-in-june-cr3/">we wrote about last week</a>. We expect this lens to be shipping some time in July.</p>
<p>We weren’t told the exact focal length of the lens, but that it would be a replacement for a current non L/DO telephoto zoom. The only lens that we can think of would be a replacement for the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS. We were <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/more-canon-super-telephoto-zoom-talk-cr1/">first told about a replacement for this lens last year</a>, and have been waiting to hear more about it.</p>
<p>This is likely going to be an August announcement, in time for Photokina and the EOS 5D Mark IV.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

What gear to bring for London?

Hey guys, so I'm heading to London in a week and I'm struggling with what cameras and lenses to bring as it's supposed to be a 5 day chill trip with my girlfriend not a photography one, however I'm also meeting a friend who is a professional athlete that I met through Instagram who wanted to meet for a drink/go on a photo mission so I'm sort of torn between keeping a light set up and bringing enough gear to get an amazing picture for her as it would really help my career.

Right now my light weight set up is my 1DX and my 35mm 1.4 II witch can cover low light, a one lens set up, speed with the 12fps if she wants to do something with sports for our photo shoot.

The bring enough gear set up is two 1DX camera's a 24-70 2,8 ii 70-200 2.8 ii is and the 35mm 1.4 ii but I know bringing that is stupid however like I said I'm worried the light weight setup won't be enough.

It's a stupid question I know but as I'm just getting started with my career I'm scared of messing up this opportunity that I feel could give me a good jump start so any advice/help would be really appreciated thank you!

Review: Canon ImagePROGRAF Pro-1000

HTML:
Keith over at Northlight has completed his exhaustive review of the Canon ImagePROGRAF Pro-1000 17″ printer. This is a printer I am personally considering, along with the offerings from Epson.</p>
<p>From Northlight:</p>
<blockquote><p>The images I produced on the range of papers look great, both colour and B&W – I took the chance to print out much of my architectural and commercial portfolio images at A3+ size, where the general vibrance and colour quality is something I’m happy to use to promote aspects of my photography business.</p>
<p>The new ink set, with the gloss coat pushes the depth and intensity of prints to levels where it’s definitely the skill of the photographer that’s more likely to limit the quality of the print. If your images are great, then your prints can match them. <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/reviews/printer/review-canon_pro-1000.html">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>It looks like Canon has improved a lot of the weaknesses with the Pro-1, a printer I used to own and never loved.</p>

Sigma 150-600mm customization

I traded one of my 100-400mm IIs for a Sigma 150-600mm C last Thursday from the local shop after I borrowed and tested it. The Sigmas vary from copy to copy, some have tested much worse than the Tamron. This copy is off-scale at the top end in their quality control. It beats my 100-400 IIs at 400 in the centre and matches them at the edges at 400mm, and kills them at 560mm with 1.4xTCs when it is set to 600mm, where it is also ahead of my 300mm f/2.8 II + 2xTC.

The first problem was with the OS - it is all aver the place in the viewfinder. But, I got a Sigma dock today and fixed the problem using dynamic OS.

What other customizations would you recommend for bird and other photography?

Here are a couple of shots on the 5DS R at 600mm. The first is the best I have ever taken of a barnswallow - no sharpening at all from RAW. The second is a tiny 650x450 crop of my local peregrine falcon 48 m up a tower.

Toshiba Aerocast wifi hard drive for back-ups?

I'm planning a 25 day hike through the Swiss alps in August. I will be minimising weight and will take an Android tablet, but not a laptop. I'm looking at the Toshiba Aerocast 1 TB WiFi hard drive with SD card reader as a backup for images on my SD cards. I could check the files on the hard drive with a WiFi connection on the Android tablet.
Do any of you have experience with this or similar systems?
The alternative I'm considering is a few large capacity USB drives. This would require me to transfer images (just jpegs, I believe) from the M3 wirelessly to the USB drive connected to a USB port in a suitable tablet.
Seems like the Toshiba would be easier and quicker.

Lube

Hello,

I’ve recently invested in some Lee filters and have a question or two regarding the wide angle lens mount.
I’m having difficulty screwing the mound on to my 17-40mm lens.
I live in fear of thread-locking the mount and ruining the thread on my lens for good.

Would a lubricant help?
If so, what’s the safest to use?

Any help gratefully received.

Test shots with Canon 1DX mark II

Hello,

I have collected a new Flickr album of few shots we took with our 1DX2.
https://flic.kr/s/aHskA1qaVX

The last photo on this album is a still frame extracted from the 500 mbit/s MJPEG 4K video. The stills captured from video frames are same quality as the jpegs out of the camera (albeit 8 mpix only) and this is the first camera that makes no difference between stills and motion (on limited fashion as obviously the video is not yet 20 mpix, but on today's terms almost as good as it gets prior to higher bit depths).

We are extremely happy with the camera, both the video and stills from it are very good IMO and the upgrade from 5D mark II feels large (skipped 5D3 in between).

Best Regards,
Karoliina Salminen

1Dx mk2 DPAF performance...not like the reviews

I used this camera to do a graduation outside and a dance recital indoors. I used it with a 70-200 mkII IS with 2X III extender at F8 and the live view DPAF had to constantly be babysat. if someone else walked by on the stage it would grab their face and they would run away with the focus. During the dance recital I only used the 70-200 and there was 1 girl it absolutely would not hold focus on simply bc she had a dress on that was close to the color of the stage background or at least thats what I believe. It searched on her nonstop in all 3 scenes she was in. I had someone else shooting for me with a C100 mk2 and it had absolutely no issues with focus using the 100-400 mk2. It rarely went out of focus. Keeping focus 99% of the time even the moment the lights went up during a scene change. Id say the 1Dx mk2 kept focus 80% of the time but when the lights would go from black to bright it would hunt like crazy trying to focus for maybe 3-5 seconds. It would also randomly lose focus even on solo performances for a second or 2. The conditions at the graduation were ISO 100 1/125 F8-F11. At the dance recital ISO 1600-4000 F5.6 1/30. Im just not understanding why the C100mk 2 has such a more efficient focusing system. Something about them doesnt seem likely that they are really the same.

Canon EOS 80D filmmaker-oriented review (& 5D MKIII comparison)

Hi there!
I just wrote this review:
www.luciolepri.it/nwp/canon_eos_80d_review.htm
I was curious to check the new sensor performances and to see if this camera could be a good second body for shooting events. I was mostly attracted by the Movie Servo AF feature. Unfortunately, video noise, as usual with Canon APS-C cameras, it's very high...

Canon Launches Renewed Global Website Using New .canon Top-Level Domain Name

HTML:
<strong>TOKYO, May 16, 2016</strong>—Canon Inc. announced that the Company has gone live today with a renewed global website employing a web address that departs from the traditional location-specific “www.canon.com” to the new “global.canon” proprietary domain name. The launch marks Canon’s first use of the “.canon” top-level domain1 (TLD) since acquiring it in February 2015.</p>
<p>Because “.canon” can only be used by Canon Group companies and services, visitors to sites that use the new TLD can easily confirm their authenticity and be assured that the information they contain is reliable. Additionally, by leveraging the simplicity of the TLD, which is easy to remember and easy to understand, Canon aims to enhance the Company’s global brand value.</p>
<p><strong>Canon begins using new “.canon” top-level domain

</strong>The TLD “.canon,” which makes use of Canon’s company name in the right-most side of the web address, is based on the new generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) Program.2 With the launch today of the “global.canon” website,3 Canon is providing information to a global audience with a new online presence.</p>
<p><strong>Canon renews global website

</strong>Canon conducts business activities around the world, providing information and services over the Internet to not only the Company’s customers, business partners and shareholders, but to all stakeholders in countries and regions across the globe. In addition to the English-language version of the “global.canon” website launched today, Canon will introduce other languages to the site in the future to share brand messages and other information globally.</p>

Photozone Review: Tamron 150-600 on the 5DS R

There you go:
http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/976-tamron150600f563vc?start=1

As PZ is just getting started with the 50 MP sensor testing, they have withheld their optical quality star rating of the lens until they've tested more lenses. This is the first they've tested longer than 35mm on the 5DS R, so it might be a while before we have something to stack it up against.

5DS Vs 5DSR?

I mainly do landscapes & some action stuff with athletes/friends but for that I have my 1DX so I'm looking at the 5DS to do my landscape work with/portraits, however looking at the whole no low pass filter vs with one of the two models I don't really know if there's a need for me to get the 5dsr over the 5ds

So i'm curious for those of you who had to choose between the S and SR which one did you end up going for? and what kind of photography are you using it for?

Also is there any reason for me to wait for the 5D4 if I already have a 1DX and 5D3 and don't shoot any video?

5D MkIII spontaneously shuts down

This was a new one for me! At a job today my gripped 5DIII was spontaneously shutting down. Not going to sleep, I mean shutting down as if I'd switched the power off or the batteries were dead flat. Switching the power on and of woke it up again but I was missing shots at a fast moving event for a long-term client. Note that the (genuine) batteries had probably 80% charge in them.

Fortunately I had my recently retired 1D MkIV in the bag (funny I chose to take it with me...) so was able to continue un-distracted.

Is this a known bug? It's annoying, I have a huge week coming up ???

Updated 24-105 f/4L IS - II ... WHEN??? or WHY NOT???

Would you like to see / buy a 24-105 f/4 IS - II with new IQ and IS tech?

  • Yes! I would buy it - I like the FL and I want to see it updated to 2016 tech.

    Votes: 40 75.5%
  • Maybe. I'm not against it per se but I would probably just buy it used sometime.

    Votes: 8 15.1%
  • Nope! I'm not a fan of the existing lens and I don't see a need in refreshing it.

    Votes: 5 9.4%

Gonna throw this out there and see what happens...

I love the quality of my 24-70 f/2.8L - II. I really love the quality of my 70-200 f/2.8L IS - II !!

But honestly, my first love (and first L lens way back) was the 24-105 f/4L IS. And I still use that lens all the time. It's a very versatile zoom FL and the IS is very useful. It's a great value of an L lens. It's a great single lens walk around solution and it works pretty well on both APS-C and FF cameras.

So when will they come out with a 24-105 that has updated tech and upgraded quality like the other new L lenses??? And for all those that say, "They never will!", why not?

FWIW - my vote is in the #1 or #2 range. In spite of what some think, I like this lens and would love a new version. I wouldn't wait very long unless it was way over priced. That might put me off a while.
