Do you still want a big zoom point & shoot?Panasonic has announced Lumix FZ80D with a 60x zoom range.

It looks like Panasonic is going to continue making large zoom range point and shoot cameras. There is still a market for them, as we do get questions fairly regularly if Canon is ever going to release another one. We're not holding our breath on that ever happening. Fisheye Photos that are not Full Frame

So if you own an 8-15mm fisheye, you can shoot full frame Fisheye Photos at 15mm (and 14mm):

And you can shoot Circular Fisheye Photos at 8mm (on Full Frame):

BD1A1605-2 copy.jpg

But you can also shoot in between. The image is at 10mm

BD1A1604 copy.jpg

I wanted to start this threat to discuss the in-between. And I don't mean which is the best of the above 3 images, those are just examples. I mean in general.

If you don't like fisheye photos, or want to tell me "you can't take all your Photos with a fisheye lens", that's cool too, but not really the discussion I want to have.

Interesting Lens Setup Coming from GoPro

I got this tasty tidbit from a U.S.-based secret camera sales person source who indicated that GoPro is making a special version of their Action Cams that have a REMOVEABLE LENS that will have a small form factor quick-locking mount.

The current Gopro 12 Hero is a 12 mm to 39 mm lens system at f/2.5 that uses software trickery to get that sort of variable zooming.

The newest Gopro Interchangeable Lens Action Camera will be sold alongside the original Gopro Hero and will have a different naming convention.

There will be FOUR compact lenses available upon introduction that will have a very reduced fish-eye effect in the final imagery coming closer to traditional fixed focal length wide-angle imaging. These lenses will be a 14 mm, a 28 mm, a 38 mm (38 mm?) and a 50 mm prime-like lens that are extremely compact but do not the fit current GoPro enclosures which are being revised to fit and will be sold alongside the original enclosures.

The new pop-on/pop-off interchangeable lens mounting system will be made available to 3rd party manufacturer accessory-makers.

The reasoning behind this new GoPro interchangeable lens system is to facilitate less fish-eye distortion for specific sports and action scenarios so that a more narrow-focused final image can be realized as per numerous requests from Hollywood crash-cam and stunt camera operators, plus requests from TWO unnamed major sports leagues (one is rumoured to be FIFA and the other is American Baseball!) who want to experiment with putting wireless body cameras onto players and on-field officials. Gopro itself was specifically requested to provide such a type of interchangeable lens action camera!

My source also says there were numerous feature requests sent to GoPro over the last 10 years who is just now responding to such a marketplace request from end-users.

This type of announcement is just one more cascading effect of new product innovations that is starting to affect Canon's marketshare. What will Canon do to offer something in the Action Camera Segment?

Cadillac Ranch at Dawn

I was traveling across the USA and I slept for a few hours in a truck stop. When I woke up, I used this ap on my phone called "Fotospot". It finds odd places and things nearby that people have photographed. The sun had not quite come up, and the ap showed "Cadillac Ranch" as an option. Hmmm, how far I wondered. 1.5 miles. Oh...

All photos with an R3 and a RF 24-105 f4 L handheld.

Canon has registered a new wireless microphone and receiver for EOS RF

A wireless microphone has been registered with the authorities by Canon. So it would appear that Canon will be releasing a wireless microphone set for the RF system. I would presume it would be similar to the Sony ECMW2BT, only better, because it’s Canon. This would certainly be useful so it will be nice to

Can Canon Compete ?

So I recently I went birding with a couple of friends . Both of them just bought the Nikon z8 and Nikons 800mm 6.3 .One of them just dumped all of her canon gear R5 and 100-500. So I. have to admit I am a bit jealous that 800mm Lens is very very nice . the quality is amazing. Do you think Canon will have a lens comparable? In no way do I want to switch systems. But I do want more reach and a faster lens. Just dreaming passing time waiting on the new releases .

We need a new pancake RF 40 mm 2.8!

Hello people,

With all the small cameras hype, Canon just need to release a new Canon RF 40mm 2.8 pancake or even 2.0! It will just BOOM the Fuji and Ricoh market. Even Nikon just did it, why they are not doing it?? The EF was awesome but it's discontinued for a LONG time and with and without adapter it would be even better. RF 28 mm is amazing but just too wide for street and portraits, etc. At least 35 or 40 mm needed.

Thanks for your attention!

R5 (and other cameras) rubber parts swelling

I've had my R5 since it launched, so about 4 years, and I'm noticing more and more of the rubber parts on it swelling. I think this happened to some degree with my previous cameras too. The cover for the mic/headphone ports doesn't quite fit right, the front grip has swollen a little bit and come detached from the body, and now I just noticed the eyecup has popped out of where it's supposed to slot onto the camera because it's swollen too. I don't know for sure what's causing this. My only guess is that I sometimes wear sunblock during the summer when I'm outdoors. That's really the only foreign chemical substance that I can think of that ever gets near the camera. Has anyone else had this happen, and is there any way to stop it, short of not wearing sunblock any more which I'm not willing to do? Thanks.

R5 or wait for the R5 MkII - Stills only

Just looking for some other peoples thoughts. I am going to purchase an R5 but not sure which one makes sense.

  • Budget isn't and issue
  • Currently have an R6 and an R50 as well as two DSLR's
  • Have good lens depth in both RF and EF lenses as well as a Canon adapter
  • I shoot a fairly broad range of subjects (Street, wildlife, sports)
  • Never shoot video

I know the latest and greatest drives some people but with what we know about the R5 Mk II and the information I supplied above, if you were in my shoes would you wait for the new release, spend the extra two grand or pickup the current R5.

EOS R3 Images

Image galleries are the second reason I like this site, but it seem there is less traffic, that there isn't an R3 thread? change is the only constant.

Got the R3 and a second hand 100-400mm IS II and tested it with the EF 2X II, at first it wouldn't AF, and there was constant movement, then it all worked great, waiting for an EF 1.4x III to add to the mix.

And during the test I discovered there was a race going on.
