Firmware update Custom Controls for the Canon 5D mk III? (Wishlist)

Been using the 1Dx and the 5Dsr for a while now, and my 5D III was not getting attention as of late. Luckily it is not an useless camera and recently on a trip and on an assignment I got to use the 1Dx and the 5D III combo again. But I missed a few controls that I got used to on the other bodies.

I really hope Canon adds a (final) firmware update to the 5D mark III to add controls that is present in the 1Dx and the 5Dsr.
The two features I really like and are missing on the 5D III are:
-Switch from ONE SHOT to AI SERVO assigned to the AF-ON button (Both 1Dx and 5Ds have this).
-Flash Control Settings assigned to the SET Button (currently only on the 5Ds).

Do you guys expect an update like this in the near future for the Mark III's out there?

Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II Exhibits Black Hole Sun Phenomenon

HTML:
<p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tTQ5uq6PyUg" width="728" height="409" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>In certain situations, it appears the Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II exhibits what is known as “black hole sun”, which is where highlights burn to black in certain situations.</p>
<p>The likely fix is a firmware update which could come quite quickly. I imagine Canon knows about the issue.</p>

Canon XC10 to Get Major Firmware Update for NAB? [CR1]

HTML:
<p>We’ve been told by a couple of people that the Canon XC10 will get a major firmware update for NAB next month.</p>
<p>While a few people have been very positive about this unique camera, most people out there that we have talked to have found it to be cumbersome to use. If the firmware is indeed a “major” one, I’d expect usability and image quality improvements.</p>

Silent Mode 1DX II VS 5DSR

After someone made me "an offer which I cannot reject" - I am planning to switch from my 1DX & 5D III to 2x 1DX II bodies (90% nature and wildlife).

The main reason is the high milage of my 1DX (shutter replaced once) and the ability of the 1DX II to use all AF points with my current tele lenses with an f8 setup.

The 5D III is mainly used in silent mode for sensitive subjects or when I am really close. Other than that I always use the 1DX.

I worried about continuous silent shutter of the 1DX II and was not sure if it will meet my demands.

Here is a comparison of continous silent shutter mode of the 1DX II VS the 5DSR (German). It helped me to make my decision easier:

Canon to Surprise us at NAB?

HTML:
NAB Hub had a short interview with Senior Advisor, Film and TV Production at Canon, Tim Smith. He touched on a few things he expects to see at NAB 2016 as well as claiming Canon will have a “surprise” at the show along with a working 8K camera and 8K displays.</p>
<blockquote>
<p class="drop-cap question"><strong>What products/services will your company be showcasing?</strong></p>
<p class="drop-cap answer">We will be showing not only our existing product line, with a few surprises, but we will also be showing working 8K cameras and 8K displays that look into the future of production.</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="drop-cap answer">It looks like an official announcement for a C500 replacement may not be happening at the show, but the development of the 8K camera will be showcased.</p>
<p class="drop-cap answer">As for the surprise? That could be anything and we hope to hear more soon. You can read the <a href="http://nabhub.com/interview/121/canon-talks-the-arrival-of-8k-at-nab-2016" target="_blank">full interview here</a>.</p>

5DS R vs 7DII

I have been toying with getting a 5DS R for my bird photography as well as being an upgrade for my 5DIII. There has been debate in various forums about Moire and colour artefacts, but they are minimal, a consensus that the 5DS R is about 10% sharper than he 5DS, but the difference gets less after sharpening, a huge plus that it has the same reach as an APS-C and the field of view of an FF, but the files are huge and the fps slow. Arthur Morris raves about the 5DS R for bird photography whereas Glenn Bartley considers it just a studio camera.

On Thursday, Canon announced a £250 cashback on the 5DS R and an official Canon retailer in the UK was selling one at a 20% discount. I couldn't resist the overall 28% discount and ordered one immediately to test for myself.

My first tests just using iso 12233 charts have indeed shown that before sharpening the 5DS R gives images distinctly sharper than from my 7DII, using the 300mm f/2.8 II and 100-400mm II with or without 1.4x and 2cxTCs. On sharpening, the difference is indeed lowered, but is still there. So, my 5DIII is about to be sold and I'll be using the 7DII and 5DS R as my stock cameras. By the way, the 100-400mm II, with or without the 1.4xTC stands up well against the 300mm f/2.8 II with the 1.4 or 2xTC on the 5DS R. I am going to enjoy the 5DS R. OK, the files will be huge and the fps lower, but the larger field of view with its easier locating of small birds and less clipping of large ones will be a serious compensation.

Looks like Canon's boat is sinking in Thailand

Excerpts from IR interview w Fuji execs:

BOLD is my addition.

TI: Yes. In Thailand the size of the mirrorless market has already exceeded that of DSLR. So we exceeded the share of Canon...and became the number one within the whole category. I think it seems the young females started buying mirrorless cameras. The number one reason is because of the skin tone. So the selfies are very popular.

snip

DE: That's very good. Boy, that's so interesting about Thailand, it's fascinating to me. It's a case where pure consumers are seeing a real difference in image quality, and that's affecting their product choices. I wonder if you can extend that into other parts of the world, too?

snip

TI: About $550 as a price range, but bear in mind that was the price for Thailand. It's probably worth three months' salary or so [for customers in that market].

DE: Wow. And they're still buying them in huge quantities.
[Ed. Note: This is really incredible, that mass-market consumers are buying cameras that cost three months' salary!]

Looks like when they're choosing to spend that much of their income on a camera, Canon is not a top choice.
Very interesting.

Anyone have all the CIPA numbers for Thailand and other asian markets they can share?

POLAR LIGHTS

Just wondering, whether there are some more polar light addicts out there? If so, I would be interested in seeing your pictures, your favourite place (Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Canada, Alaska or???)

Once in 1998 I was flying from Paris to Los Angeles and then to Tahiti. After crossing Iceland, the Jumbo Jet flew right into polar lights - an extaordinary experience which lasted at least 3 hours. I never forget this flight. Thanks to digital cameras I finally was able to capture those lights 15 years later on my first trip to Tromso, Norway. 4 nights of lights during a 5-night-trip was not that bad. But I was really really infected by a certain virus - the virulensis influencicus aurora borealis epidemii!!!! :) :) ;D ;) That virus spreads quite epidemically around polarl light travellers...

So this was in March 2013. In October 2013 I returned to Norway and Sweden. This time I stayed in Abisko (national park in Sweden near Norwegian border) and on the Lofoten Islands. A year later I did the same trip again - self driving, some 3300 km or 2000+ miles from home one way!

Here some of my pictures from Tromso first.

1DX II Noise test form Raymond Phang

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:QImE5wfnkqcJ:www.raymondphang.com/blog/2016/canon-1dx-mk2-versus-canon-1dx-dynamic-range-and-high-iso-comparison/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=au

Noise comparison: 1DX II vs. 1DX.

Photorumors.com said it was taken down but the cached site is still visible.

Question: if it's arriving to buyers this week, why would Canon ask these to come down? I thought the product NDAs were tied to announcement date, not shipping dates.

New 50mm On Coming Soon? [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that a new 50mm lens was coming fairly soon. We weren’t told if it was a replacement for the f/1.4 version or the f/1.2L version.</p>
<p>I think a lot of us would assume that the 30+ year old EF 50mm f/1.4 is the likely candidate, but that’s been talked about for years. The EF 50mm f/1.2L could use an update as well and would really benefit from a floating element design.</p>
<p>The EF 50mm f/1.8 was updated last year.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Off-Topic from the start: Off Topic Forum?! :D

Hellooo!

I occasionally message members because I'm curious about their interests, vocations, projects etc but it would be great to be able to chat more openly with whichever forum members have shared interests or 2 cents to chip in...

I'd love to see an Off-Topid/General Chat/Hang-Out forum, though I'm wondering if there are reasons for there not already being one? I know they exist in other corners of the internets but there's a community here which we're all familiar with, to varying degrees, and it would be nice to engage this collection of people in a broader range of discussions!

Thoughts? Thanks for running a great forum and to all the participants, too... Apologies for getting emotional there ;)

70D triggering flash too early on second curtain sync

I tried to use second curtain sync flash on my 70D for the first time yesterday. I noticed, that it seems to fire too early. I'm using 1/10 s shutter speed with a moving light source in the image (to test this some more I just moved the camera with a static light source).
When I'm using first curtain sync, I get an image with the light trail starting directly at the position where the light source was at the time of the flash. When I'm using second curtain sync, the position of the light source at the time of the flash is at about 90% of the total trail length. This means that the flash happens about 10ms (10% of 1/10 s=100ms) before the shutter closes and makes the image look strange. This happens with both my 600EX-RTs as well as my 430EXIII-RT and also with the internal flash of my 70D.
Is this expected, or is there something wrong with my camera?

Best lens for puppy photography?

I can't believe I'm posting this, but hey, here we go.

We're getting another dog, and alongside the obvious house prep we are doing, I am getting geeked out for puppy photos. I'll be a shooting a 5D3 in non-scripted situations handheld without a flash -- I'll resort to toy/treat-baiting for eye contact, but that's about it.

If the pup is asleep or very still, the 100L immediately comes to mind. But for general awake and active shots, I'm leaning towards a wider fast prime to keep the ISO non-stratospheric.

I was just curious, but given the nightmarish combo of [black lab] + [indoor lighting] + [moving subject], is there a 'best' optical tool to capture that?

Portable Battery charge for 1Dx

The current battery charger for the 1Dx is great at the office, studio or home. It is nice I can load 2 batteries, recycle a battery, etc.

However when I travel I would like a smaller charger. Does any one know a reliable portable charger for the 1Dx?

Also notice a friend the batteries in his Nikon D4. Unlike the Canon, the battery does not include the outside piece (the part of the canon battery that is closes the housing and includes the locking mechanism). In the Nikon battery you detach the outside piece and slip in onto the new battery. This makes the battery much smaller, not sure if there is a problem with outside piece becoming loose.

Overall I think this is a better solution as it makes the battery smaller for packing.

Irix Announces 15mm f/2.4 Lenses for Canon EF

HTML:
<p><em>Meet the Irix 15mm f/2.4. The photographers dream. Built by engineers and perfected by designers.</em></p>
<p><strong>The new ultra wide-angle, rectilinear manual lens designed for DSLR cameras guarantees exceptional optical performance.</strong></p>
<p>The Irix 15mm f/2.4 lens is designed to deliver the best optical performance and match full frame DSLR cameras demands. Providing a focal length of 15mm, this new lens model is ideal for outdoor and indoor photography whether it is photojournalism, landscapes or architecture.</p>
<p>From 19 to 22 March, during The Photography Show in Birmingham, TH Swiss will be premiering new family of lenses. Visit Irix at Stand No F121.</p>
<p><strong>Innovative technology

</strong>Combining capabilities specific to analogue photography with ingenious technology and solutions, the Irix 15mm f/2.4 is the perfect tool for both professionals and hobbyists. The new special features such as focus lock, infinity click and hyperfocal scale set a new level of manual lens functionality. Focus lock enables to lock the focus ring at any time ensuring the chosen settings. Hyperfocal distance scale gives information about the accessible range for depth of field for a given aperture simply and intuitively. When the focusing ring is set in the “infinity” position, there is a noticeable “click” (infinity click), making it easier to find the value without looking.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>Extraordinary optical performance

</strong>The Irix 15mm f/2.4 meets the most demanding requirements of modern cameras. Thanks to sophisticated optical construction and special neutrino coating, colour aberration, ghosting and flare effects have been reduced to the absolute minimum, so the lens is ready to meet the requirements of the 50+ megapixel sensors of the newest cameras.</p>
<p>The complex optical system consist of 15 elements in 11 groups. Three of the lens elements have a high refractive index and two others have been made from extra-low dispersion glass. The construction also contains two glass aspherical lenses that are responsible for extremely high image quality and improving image brightness at edges, while minimizing distortions and aberrations at the same time.</p>
<p>With a minimum focusing distance of 0.28 meter and 9 rounded shaped aperture blades, the lens stands for supremely smooth out-of-focus areas. Working with a narrow depth of field it allows the user to fully enjoy the bokeh effect.</p>
<p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hzaBoZASJwk" width="728" height="409" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p><strong>Resistant to extreme conditions

</strong>Irix 15mm f/2.4 lenses are made with extreme precision, allowing them to be used in even the harshest weather conditions. Each lens is equipped with a weather sealed construction that protects the interior against dust and moisture. Thanks to inner seals they are also protected from accidental water splashes.</p>
<p><strong>Prepare for more and create

</strong>Despite its short focal length and large aperture, the Irix 15mm f/2.4 is equipped with not only a front filter mount, but also has a rear gelatin filter slot. The design of the lens allows the use of 95 mm screw-in filters at the front in the petal-shape lens hood and gelatin filters at the back of the lens. This ensures unlimited possibilities for image creation.</p>
<p><strong>Personalize your view

</strong>For the comfort of our customers Irix has created two versions of the Irix 15mm f/2.4 to meet their personality and individual taste.</p>
<p><strong>Irix Blackstone:</strong> classic design meets maximum functionality, achieving the perfect match of innovative technology. The durable aluminium and magnesium body ensures foolproof protection of your lens, even in extreme conditions. Engraved fluorescent markings that reflect the light enable easy operation in all lighting conditions.</p>
<p><strong>Irix Firefly:</strong> high quality mechanism in a handy design. Ergonomic focusing ring offers the freedom to capture the most ideal moment, whether it is big city architecture or wildlife scenery. The most lightweight lens in its class. Challenge accepted.</p>
<p><strong>Irix Swiss Design

</strong>Irix Swiss Design stands for minimalism in style while maintaining maximum functionality. It is a perfect mixture of European design combined with Korean precision. The same look and feel of all products in the Irix family. The same consistency, product packaging and complementary elements, all perfectly shaped and fitting one another.</p>
<p><strong>Ultimate precision

</strong>Each Irix 15mm f/2.4 lens leaving the factory has been properly calibrated. However, the focus calibration function provides the unique opportunity to adjust the focusing scale for a particular model of camera.</p>

My very BAD Experience with CPS - Final Chapter

Hi Guys,

This is the end chapter of this thread http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=29235.0

Finally got my EF 100-400 Mk II in my hands, so far, it seems to work.

Now, you wonder what happened with my lens, and I wonder too, because they explained that they had to change the first group of lenses, change the IS group and a PCB.

Am I satisfied? not at all. Yes they gave me a loaner and they fixed my lens, but something happened with it along the way and they won't recognize it. I hope the attachments go through since they won't stand behind their work. They stated the following in the memo:

- The problem necessitating this repair is not covered by the limited warranty for your product. Accordingly, this repair is being provided to you as a courtesy only. "As is" and without warranties of any kind, express or implied. Furthermore, Canon U.S.A. will not be responsible for any damage (including, without limitation, consequential damages and lost profits), cost, expense, loss or inconvenience as a result of these repairs. This courtesy repair does not and is not intended to constitute a waiver of Canon U.S.A. Inc's right to charge you for any future repairs not covered under the limited warranty for your product.

It's really amazing, I sent my lens to have it serviced, they sent it back with focusing problems and after fixing it they are washing theirs hands... After this, I'm really thinking if I should return the loaner or keep it as a warranty.

EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II vs EF 70-200mm f/2.8L + 2X III

Hi,
Just packing for a trip to Argentina and trying to keep things light. Am trying to avoid taking both lenses and wanted to know how good the 200 with a 2X extender was compared to the new 100-400. Took some pictures to compare and the 100-400 came out sharper. Anyway, sharing the results in the event that it is useful to anyone else.

Ditching Sigma 35/1.4 for Canon 16-35/4 ?

I have found a fairly good deal on a new Canon 16-35/4 IS, and i'm very tempted to go for it, for i've been missing an UWA lens since i did the switch to FF (over 2 years ago!). Right now i have the 35mm covered by the Sigma Art, which i love to use while taking pictures indoor. But sadly, if i take the 16-35/4 i can't justify owning both, so it would have to go.

The alternative would be keeping the Sigma 35mm and going for an UWA prime. This choice would be far more expensive, and will make my kit grow even more, but could be viable if said UWA would deliver better results than the Canon 16-35/4. The first that came to my mind is the Zeiss Milvus 21/2.8, but i'm open to more suggestions.

My aim is to start doing more landscape work. Right now i have a 6D and 3 lenses: Sigma 35/1.4, Sigma 50/1.4, Canon 85/1.8. Next step would be selling the 85 and getting a Canon 70-200/4 IS or a 70-300L, but i'll cover that in another topic when the time comes. ;D
