Lots of EOS 5D Mark IV Talk, None of it Reliable

HTML:
We’re getting a lot of comments about the upcoming EOS 5D Mark IV, none of which I’d consider reliable. There have been lots of suggestions that Canon will launch the camera before the Photography Show which runs from March 19, 2016 until March 22, 2016 in Birmingham, UK. I think most suggestions are based on the fact that this was the first show that the EOS 5D Mark III was showcased at, however it was launched via a massively marketed global campaign, and was not announced <em>FOR </em>the show.</p>
<p>The most reliable information I currently have about the announcement date is that it will come after the EOS-1D X Mark II begins shipping, no other reliable source has disagreed with this.</p>
<p>The specification lists I’ve seen out there are likely conjecture. There seems to be a ton of clickbait articles about the EOS 5D Mark IV being passed around, and this is the first time I’ve seen these sorts of things for a camera launch.</p>
<p>There will be lots of talk about the EOS 5D Mark IV leading up to NAB in April, and I expect some information to make its way out during that time.</p>
<p>We’ll be attending NAB this year and will once again team up with Planet5D for the multi-site live blog, that I hope to actually post to this time. :)</p>

Video Review of the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1 VC by Dustin Abbott

Hi everyone. I'm not allowed to share my text review and image galleries from the new Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC yet, but I was given the go ahead to publish my video review.

You can watch it here: http://bit.ly/1UeliGG

It's definitely a big step forward in build and handling. AF speed now seems as fast as the 100L, and it racks focus through the whole focus range faster.

Confusing purchase ahead.

So currently I have a Canon 6D and

1 Canon 430ex ii
1 Yongnuo 560ii
3 Yongnuo RF-603 triggers.

When doing product/still life shots I generally have one of the RF-603'S on camera and the others on the flashes to trigger them.

I plan to get the Yongnuo 568EX ii and was interested in getting the 622c triggers so I can use HSS. If I was to use the 430ex ii and the 568ex with HSS, I would need 3 622c triggers right (one on the body and one on each flash?

Also if I was shooting at normal sync speeds (such as 1/180th), I could use the 622c's to fire the YN-568 and have the others in Slavs mode to trigger them right?

Nikon D5 review with noise samples

For those that are curious of how Nikon's flagship is panning out:

https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=sv&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Farticle.dcview.com%2Fnewreadarticle.php%3Ftype%3D7%26id%3D12744&edit-text=

Not shockingly, ISO 3.2 million works about as well as you'd expect, but the D5 seems to be about a stop better than the D4s. (See attached image, there are plenty of samples and other comparisons at the link.)

The illuminated buttons look pretty handy as well.

Also: Am I the only one more interested in the D500 sensor performance than the D5? I have no intention to returning to crop or converting to Nikon, but I'm curious to see how many stops the D500 leaves the 7D2 in the rear mirror w.r.t. high ISO.

Sony announces new radio wireless lighting control system

https://alphauniverse.com/stories/sony-announces-new-wireless-lighting-control-system/

ooops, another Canon unique sales advantage out the window.

Canon squandered a good part of that advantage anyways due to their decision to only sell [big, expensive] 600EX-RTs + [expensive, no AF-assist light] ST-E3 RTs ... instead of bringing on [smaller, less expensive] 430EX III RT early on and a [small, inexpensive] speedlite receiver so customers could have integrated their existing 580EX II and 430EX II into an RT speedlite setup.

Question about image quality

I opined on another forum that by using various PS photomerging techniques, one could obtain 50 MP images by using a 22 MP camera, 1Ds3.

The thread progressed as expected until the term "Nyquist limit resolution" was introduced.
It was indicated that my gear produces about 4.7 LP/mm, whereas the new 5Ds coughs out 7.1 LP/mm.

My question...does the term "Nyquist limit resolution" have any relationship to IQ?

Jet (the black cat)

So we have a jet black cat in our neighborhood. Sunday morning he made his presence felt on the wall. The babblers immediately raised the alarm. So I stalked Jed Jet. Here are some pictures. The captions are the names of the images. Hope you like them.

Elinchrom rx-one life expectancy

Does anybody know how long studio flashes like the rx-one from elinchrom are supposed to last? I had mine about a year and it blew up with considerable noise. on opening it up, the condensor had burned itself and part of the circuit off the main board. I'd estimate the amount of times it has been triggered at about a thousand. Is this considered to be a normal life cycle for the entry level series and can it only be resolved by getting the more expensive ones or would this be a fluke and are these things normally built to last for years? This is already the second head to have issues, but the first to really die (the other one had plastic which impacted the fan, so that was easy to fix)

f/4.0 Lenses and astrophotography

Hi all :)

So with the understanding that the larger apertures like f/2.8 and bigger being ideal for astrophotography, I'm trying to gain some experienced opinions on f/4.0 for Astro.

What would one lose with a f/4.0 and how would a photographer have to compensate in order to take good images?

Just a bit of background, the economy in my country and taken a very poor downturn and our exchange rate against the US dollar has lost about 30% in the last few months.
Unfortunately it has meant that as a hobbyist, I can't justify paying the higher prices for gear right now and I've committed to the Canon EF 16-35 f/4.0 L IS

I would really appreciate some feedback please :)

Interesting old 80D rumor in light of the actual published features

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/56457256

This is a six-month old rumor that at the time was just one rumor among others. However, now that the 80D is actually published it seems fairly accurate and the unconfirmed parts might have slightly more credence:

Announcement: December 2015
Not quite but things get delayed all the time.

24 megapixels, that's a new sensor not the same as other 24mp EOS bodies
Correct.

ADC now on the sensor itself, expect much cleaner fine detail
80D's ISO 6400 is like 70D's ISO 3200
DR at ISO 100 improved 21% compared to 70D
Unconfirmed but in line with other rumors.

Single DIGIC 6 (not 6+)
Correct.

It has DPAF, same as 70D.
Correct but an extremely safe bet.

Much more richer colour tones because of new Colour Filter Array (CFA) engineered with germanium microstructures, it also allows more photons on the sensor which helps the ISO performance
Interesting if true.

Canon claims 8.1 fps but I feel it's more like 7.5 fps, maybe will be improved in the final product
Buffer will be less than 70D. That was a trade-off to keep the cost low.
According to another rumor, Canon dropped the FPS from 8 to 7 late in the process. Less FPS = more buffer, so they might simply have decided that the latter is more important than the former after all.

No 4K but has 1080 60fps, it still does line-skipping
Correct (line-skipping unconfirmed but fairly safe bet)

Both Wifi and GPS, also NFC
No GPS.

A new more sturdy swivel screen hing design. Canon also readies a full-frame camera with swivel LCD.
Externally looks the same as the 70D design, could of course be better engineered internally.

Single UHS-II SD slot
UHS-I.

Astrophotography version of 80D will also be released, expected three months after 80D release
Interesting.

Wide angle choices

Hi guys and girls,

I have just sold my Canon 35 1.4 L - and need to get a new WA lens. I like the focal range although sometimes a wish I had gone for something a little wider but 85-90% happy with 35mm and can move my feet when required :)

I am currently looking at the different options:

Canon 35 1.4 L II - sharp - expensive
Sigma 35 1.4 Art - sharp - not as expensive
Sigma 24-35 2.0 Art - sharp and covers my most used WA area. Size and weight is not an issue
Tamron 15-30 2.8 - absolutely no opinions about the lens as I have not handled it
Canon 16-35 F4 IS - no opinion either as I have not handled this lens either.

I would be using the lens as an all purpose /walk around lens for day and night; Northern Lights / star landscapes as well as normal landscapes. I currently use a 6D but will in the next 1-2 years upgrade to 5D III or 5D III's next release depending on what it brings to the table. I have a 85 1.2 II and a 150-600 Contemporary as well as the Samyang 14 2.8 currently.

Appreciate any feedback :)

Dark frame collection without shutter opening?

Long Exposure Noise Reduction causes a dark exposure with the shutter closed under some circumstances. The resulting dark frame is substracted from the photo. At high ISO, a larger number of averaged darkframes (master frame) substracted from a photo gives better results than a single dark frame.

1) The thermal noise is dependent on shutter speed, ISO and sensor temperature. Three variables make up a lot of combinations and a series of 50 to 100 dark frames for each combo make a lot of dark frames ;D
How temperature / shutter speed sensitive are the dark frames? Would it be noticable if the substracted dark frame temperature would be 2 - 4 degrees Celcius off from the actual photo temperature? What about the shutter speed?

2) with LENR = ON, the camera takes a dark frame with the shutter closed. It would be quite convenient if you can do this manually and write the resulting CR2 to the SD card. It also saves on shutter actuations. Is there a way (e.g. hack) to do this? Maybe via usb and some remote control or a special piece of firmware that can be installed?

Samyang/Rokinon 21mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.2 Reviews on EOS M3

Hi, everyone. I'll be working on formatting a Canon Rumors review probably next week on these lenses, but I thought I would share the existing linkage to my text and video reviews for those of you that are really interested in them as options either on Canon's M system or other mirrorless systems (Sony, Fuji, M43) that you may have. I did the review on a EOS M3, and the lenses are very, very impressive outside the limitations of manual focus only lenses.

You are welcome to wait for the official CR Version, or you can jump in here:

A 1DX II deal that is too good to pass up?

Hi all,

It's been a while, but I was hoping for some advice.

Canon India have contacted me an offered me a fantastic price on a new 1DX II.... I am currently on a 5D III and very happy with it, no complaints. I shoot it with a grip most of the time and with a 500L on it. The 1DX II is a big investment despite the significant discount, so what do you guys think? Jump on a great deal? Here are a few considerations:
- It won't break the bank especially as I would sell my 5DIII
- I shoot a lot of wildlife with my Gripped 5DIII + 500L, so weight won't matter
- I also travel a lot, and think I would miss the removable grip.

Help ease my conscience please!

Best,

J

Using the 1DX Mark II with only CF Cards

I am hoping to soon get my hands on a 1DX Mark II to test for a few days but as I do not have a CFast card I was wondering what impact using only Lexar 1066X 64GB CF Cards will have on the 1DX Mark II's performance?

To be honest I am reluctant to buy a CFast card just for testing purposes, although of course if I decide to buy then I would have to get one.

Is it only video that is affected, or still shooting as well? And if so, how?

Thanks.
