Panasonic develops organic sensor .. 123dB DR / global shutter

Panasonic Corporation today announced that it has developed a new wide-dynamic-range[1] technology which can improve simultaneous-capture wide dynamic range 100 times wider than the conventional results, using a CMOS image sensor with an organic photoconductive film (OPF - developed by FUJIFILM Corporation).

http://www.fujirumors.com/panasonic-develops-organic-sensor-with-global-shutter-impressive-123db-dynamic-range-made-with-fujifilm/

"You might remember how back in November we shared the news that Panasonic will talk about an Ultra Low Noise 120dB+ (!!) Dynamic Range organic sensor on February 1st. Well, we now have more details about it. Panasonic and Fujifilm are developing a 123dB dynamic range organic sensor with global shutter.

Dicahub speculates that this might be the reason why Fujfilm is building a new plant for advanced semiconductor materials in Taiwan.

From the Organic Sensor press text: http://news.panasonic.com/press/news/data/2016/02/en160203-5/en160203-5.html
Panasonic Corporation today announced that it has developed a new wide-dynamic-range[1] technology which can improve simultaneous-capture wide dynamic range[2] 100 times wider than the conventional results, using a CMOS image sensor with an organic photoconductive film (OPF)*2 [we are using an organic photoconductive film (OPF) that FUJIFILM Corporation has developed.] .
1. Wide incident angle (60 degrees), high sensitivity, high saturation and highly-functional circuits due to a unique feature of OPF, in which an OPF for photoelectric-conversion and a readout circuits are independent.
2. 123dB simultaneous-capture wide dynamic range (that is 100x wider than that of common silicon image sensors*3), while maintaining the conventional chip size, due to our original ” simultaneous-capture structure “.

From the Global Shutter press text:
http://news.panasonic.com/press/news/data/2016/02/en160203-6/en160203-6.html
Panasonic Corporation today announced that it has developed a new highly functional global shutter[1]technology for CMOS image sensor using organic photoconductive film (OPF)*1 [we are using an organic photoconductive film (OPF) that FUJIFILM Corporation has developed.] . This technology enables to capture high speed moving object up to 10 times brighter*2 scene in global shutter mode. In OPF CMOS image sensor, charge-storage function and photoelectric-conversion function can be set independently. By utilizing the unique feature of OPF CMOS image sensor, this technology solves the degradation of saturation signal[2] in conventional image sensor with global shutter function. Motion direction can be detected from acquired object’s signal level in one picture by fine control of shutter sensitivity by changing applied voltage to OPF which is hardly realized by conventional CMOS image sensors.

The newly developed highly functional global shutter technology contributes to high speed image sensing of moving objects without image distortion which appears in conventional shutter operation under very bright scene. We expect this technology to be used widely in motion capture applications and also extend to other applications that have been thought to be difficult to realize unless high saturation global shutter or variable sensitivity multiple exposure.!

Sample image does not really wow me :P ... but they have enough time to improve on it, before Canon even manages to get to 14 EV DR sensors. ;D

Discussion: The EOS-1D X Mark II for Cinematographers

HTML:
<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/p1-cZCXu990" width="728" height="409" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>Planet5D’s Mitch and always working cinematographer Barry Andersson discuss the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II from a filmmakers point of view. I gather Barry is very excited to get his hand on the new flagship DSLR from Canon.</p>
<p>Barry makes some great points about the strengths and perceived weaknesses of the video features on the EOS-1D X Mark II, especially when it comes to the omission of C-Log.</p>
<p>For the record, in the above interview Mitch from Planet5D says I swear up and down that the EOS 5D Mark III replacement will not have 4K video. While that’s what we’re being told, we’re not convinced that is going to be the case. There is always a possibility of 2 more 5D cameras, though we think the “EOS 5Dc” is likely a a unicorn. We’ve had some mentions that Canon is working on a small form factor 4K camera with an EF mount, but we don’t know if that’s a DSLR or a Cinema EOS product. It’s going to be very interesting to say the least.</p>

The Next DSLR from Canon Will Be....

HTML:
……. the EOS 80D.</p>
<p>We wouldn’t be surprised if this replacement for the EOS 70D is announced before the start of CP+ this month in Japan. The EOS-1D X Mark II will get a few weeks in the spotlight leading up to CP+.</p>
<p>All we’ve heard about the EOS 80D is that it will have improved AF performance as well as more autofocus points. We don’t expect anything too revolutionary like 4K video.</p>
<p>I do realize most of you care about the replacement for the EOS 5D Mark III, but for the moment, there’s nothing solid on its development that we can report. I suspect we’ll get at least one “5D” camera some time before the summer.</p>

1 Dx II - Very Bad News For Videographers.

Dear friends, i just found it in "Imaging-Resource.com":

"According to CIPA testing, when using the optical viewfinder, the 1DX II's battery should allow for between 1020-1210 or thereabouts (depending on the ambient temperature). Battery life drops dramatically though for Live View shooting, with approximately 240 shots per charge at 32°F (0°C) or 260 shots at 73°F (23°C)."

Around 250 shots with live-view on, means less than 5-10 minutes of movie making, using DPAF and the touch screen. Maybe i'm completely wrong but, as an engineer i thing that, a pair of Digic 6+ is an energy consumption monster duet and Canon shoots itself in the foot by this very limited battery life. I'm very close to pre-order the camera (although i'm afraid i'll become a guinea pig again; i changed three 7D Mk2 bodies in the first week of its release due to center point misfocusing and finally sent the damned thing to hell), still i got really frustrated by this fact!

One thing i'd also like to say is, from the sample pictures i've seen till now, i'm quite persuaded that the dynamic range is going to suck again. Too much black in the shadows and not even a word by the so called "independent" reviewers about the matter. I'm sure it sucks a lot!

That's all i have to say for now; be lucky, be healthy, be surrounded by those you love.

Yours
Yiannis A.

Canon Executive Talks EOS M in 2016

HTML:
In an interview with ASCII.jp, Canon executive Yagi Koichi had this to say about the immediate future of the EOS M line (Google translated).</p>
<blockquote><p>“in the third quarter and fourth quarter of 2015, we have been able to ship a lot of mirror-less the number of cameras, not yet satisfied by For. At present new products, but mention can not be, the third quarter in 2016, towards the fourth quarter and that the “mirror-less market is forecast to grow, Canon’s share of the” mirror-less camera market and two years ago the 4-position, we want to aim at the 3-position.</p></blockquote>
<p>My summary of the above quote:</p>
<blockquote><p>We’re working on new mirrorless products that we plan to launch in Q3 and Q4 of 2016, we obviously can’t discuss those products at this time. We’re currently #4 in mirrorless, and want to get to #3 in marketshare in the near future. We do expect the mirrorless market to continue to grow and we want to be a part of that growth, but we need to produce better mirrorless cameras.</p></blockquote>
<p>So it sounds like Canon has plans for a big splash in mirrorless for Photokina 2016 in Cologne, Germany.</p>
<p><em>thanks Jenson</em></p>

What do you think of the 1Dx Mark II?

Now that the cat is out of the bag, how does the 1DX M2 stack up to your expectations

  • This is a hot camera - Canon really exceed my expectations

  • Definitely a solid introduction - Canon did a better than I thought they would

    Votes: 21 27.3%
  • Meet them - Give or take a few items, Canon give us what I thought they would

    Votes: 34 44.2%
  • I had higher hopes - Canon came up short (at least in a few areas)

    Votes: 17 22.1%
  • They call this new?? Canon should not have released this camera

    Votes: 1 1.3%

In the days and weeks leading up to the announcement a lot of us were speculating on what features the new camera would have or at least what we would like to see.

Now that the 1DX M2 is released, did Canon meet your expectations?

For me I would say they feel slightly short, though I may have been overly optimistic. I had hoped for 22-24 MP and a more focusing points. The two different card slots is a poor design decision for me, but I can understand why they did it. I would have preferred a configuration with 2 of the same.

I am pleased with the price, Canon reduced the intro price compared to the 1DX, at least in USD.

1DX Mark II - Coolest New Feature

Okay, you probably think I'm talking about the camera - but take a look at the red stripe on the battery and battery charger! Now I will really feel professional with my L(uxury) battery and charger! I'm sure our buddy Surapon will really love this one!

Canon USA even has a whole article about it ;D:

Canon way to work with firmware

One thing i will never understand, how canon work with firmware updates.

For example, build in GPS in 6d is a wonderful idea, but for some strange reason it eats battery even when camera is off O_o, and they made a workaround only in 1dxmkii!

Or setting shutter speed low level and auto iso range i saw in 6d, while they've could add such simple feature in 5dmkii.

Looks like history knows only one example of feature adding procedure, 7d update...

<p>The Ultimate EOS Camera: Continuing a Legacy of High Speed and Performance

Building on the success of the Canon EOS-1D X professional digital camera, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II camera is designed to deliver high-performance, speed, and image quality, with improved comfort for professional photographers. In addition to the new 20.2 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 6+ Image Processors, the new EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera includes an improved 61-point High-Density Reticular AF II system with all AF points selectable by the user (and up to 41 cross-type points depending on the lens in use). The improved AF system includes expanded coverage that supports AF at maximum apertures up to f/8 with all 61 points for high precision autofocus even when using EF super-telephoto lenses with an EF extender. The camera also boasts excellent dynamic range and reduced color noise compared to its predecessor throughout its standard ISO speed range of 100 – 51,200. Expansion ISO speeds of 50, 102,400, 204,800 and 409,600 are also available. A first for the Canon EOS-1D series, this camera also features a 360,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor with enhanced precision and performance compared to its predecessor, improving facial recognition and tracking, as well as nature scenes. Additionally, the advanced AE system can detect and compensate for flickering light sources such as sodium vapor lamps that are often used in gymnasiums and swimming pools. When enabled, this anti-flicker system automatically adjusts shutter release timing to help reduce disparities in exposure and color especially during continuous burst shooting.</p>
<p>For filmmakers and photographers looking to do more than still photography alone with a DSLR camera and EF lenses, the EOS-1D X Mark II camera offers high resolution DCI 4K video at frame rates up-to-60p, with smooth movie recording to an in-camera CFast 2.0 memory card. An additional card slot supports standard CF memory cards up to UDMA 7. The built-in headphone jack supports real-time audio monitoring. Two additional EOS ‘firsts’ include 4K Frame Grab and 120p Full HD recording. The camera’s 4K Frame Grab function allows users to isolate a frame from recorded 4K video and create an 8.8 megapixel still JPEG image in-camera. When combined with the EOS-1D X Mark II’s high-sensitivity full-frame CMOS sensor, the new camera’s ability to record Full HD video at frame rates up to 120p will allow videographers to produce high quality slow motion video even in extremely low light. To make video shooting even more intuitive, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II camera’s touch-screen LCD allows videographers to select the camera’s AF point before and during video recording with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which provides responsive, accurate and quiet camcorder-like video autofocus to DSLRs.</p>
<p>“The innovations within Canon’s new EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera clearly set a new standard for professional cameras,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “In developing the EOS-1D X Mark II camera, we looked to incorporate user-requested performance enhancements to bring professional photographers the ultimate EOS camera, a camera that has matured and been developed to meet their evolving needs.”</p>
<p>“Having f/8 capability on all 61 AF points is a tremendous benefit to wildlife photographers,” noted nature photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Charles Glatzer. “In order to capture tight shots of animals without disturbing them, I frequently have to use very long lenses—sometimes with an extender attached, which further diminishes the aperture. The improved AF allows me to frame the shot exactly the way I envision it, without having to compromise.”</p>
<p>“This camera is a huge step forward,” remarked acclaimed photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Damian Strohmeyer. “Shooting sports in a gym at 8,000 ISO, it looked as good as 800 ISO from a generation or two ago. The images are tack-sharp, and the autofocus just doesn’t miss. I’ve been amazed by what I’ve seen so far.”</p>
<p>“The autofocus was awesome,” agreed Peter Read Miller, sports photographer and Canon Explorer of Light. “The higher frame rate coupled with the speed of the CFast card was a definite advantage. It just never buffered out, even shooting RAW.”</p>
<p>The new EOS-1D X Mark II camera also offers a built-in GPS** receiver with compass for precise geo-tagged information of latitude, longitude, elevation and direction. This is especially valuable to wildlife photographers and photojournalists who need to track their locations, as well as providing sports photographers the ability to sync a multiple-camera setup with extreme accuracy and precision. It is also possible to use the camera’s built-in GPS to automatically sync the camera’s time to the atomic clock, an invaluable feature to professionals. An improved grip also makes the camera easier for photographers to hold and maneuver while shooting. In response to feedback from professional EOS users, the AF points in the EOS-1D X Mark II camera’s Intelligent Viewfinder II can be illuminated in red for improved visibility, especially when shooting in dark locations. AF sensitivity in low light has been doubled from EV -2 to EV -3 at the center AF point when the camera is set to One-Shot AF, enabling the camera to autofocus in extremely dark shooting conditions such as a moonlit nightscape. Viewfinder AF coverage has also been increased for greater compositional flexibility.</p>
<p>As with all EOS-1D series cameras, the EOS-1D X Mark II’s rugged construction and magnesium alloy body is weather resistant. The camera also features improved controls and more in-camera image quality enhancements than ever before, including a Digital Lens Optimizer function offering high quality aberration correction which can now be achieved without an external computer. This feature makes it easier for professional photographers to deliver finished files to their clients, especially in situations when access to a personal computer is impractical or inconvenient.</p>
<p>The estimated retail price for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is $5999 (MSRP) for the body or $6299 for the Premium Kit which includes a 64 GB CFast memory card and card reader. The new camera is scheduled to begin shipping to authorized Canon USA dealers in April 2016***. Portraitlens for headshots.

Hi all. First of all, yes I know, there has been written a lot about lenses for portraits.
But still I like to know a bit more, hopefully.
I own a Mark5dIII with several lenses (16-35/24-70 II/70-200 II/100 IS). Very pleased with them.
I did some landscapes and detail shots.
Curious enough, I like to make headshots of animals more and more and I have been asked to make images in black and white of all the children of school.
I made the headshots with the 100L and the 70-200. Pleased with them, but those lenses are not the primes the pro's have got in their bag. Not that I'm a pro, no, don't misunderstand me. But, spending some money, I will spend it right.
I've searched the net for hours and tried to figure out what kind of lenses famous portrait photographers use. Hahaha, I know, you may laugh :)
But, to get this info is very difficult.
Which lens will satisfy my needs the most?
- 85 L
- 85 1.8
- 135 L
And strange enough, I love the images of Lee Jeffries and he uses a 24 mm.
This is the kind of images I like to make myself:

Main page discrepencies

Hi -
I'd noticed that I see different headlines for a while on your main page depending which device I connected with.
My mobile devices seemed to show the most recent news articles (The 1DX announcement today for instance - woot!)

But when I connected with various computers I've been seeing the Tamron 85 1.4 as the lead headline for about a week now.

I finally tracked down the difference and can reproduce the issue consistently. If I connect to www.canonrumors.com everything works great. However, if I connect to canonrumors.com without the leading www then I get stale headlines.

It's a non-issue for me now that I have a solution. But I thought this might help somebody else.

Eagles used to take out Drones!

Hats off to the Dutch, what a clever idea!

As part of a new trial, the Dutch National Police force has begun training eagles to intercept troublesome drones during an emergency, when another capture device might put people below at risk.

<p><strong>Increased resolution and fine detail, with lens aberration correction and diffraction correction via new in-camera Digital Lens Optimizer technology.</strong></p>
<p>To combat any possible image degradation from lens aberration and diffraction, the EOS-1D X Mark II camera is equipped with a number of in-camera optical correction functions for clear and high-quality images. The EOS-1D X Mark II even stores lens aberration data, helping to eliminatethe need to register lens data on previously released lenses, and correcting images with virtually no delay in-camera. The EOS-1D X Mark II not only corrects peripheral brightness and chromatic aberration, but also features distortion correction plus diffraction correction, which has been included for the first time in an EOS camera. Distortion correction helps resolve barrel and pincushion distortions, while diffraction correction virtually eliminates the blurring effects from diffraction that can be created when capturing an image at a small aperture. The camera’s Dual DIGIC 6+ Image Processors help ensure these corrections can be made with virtually no effect on operational speed. In-camera RAW processing is also made fast and convenient with Canon’s Digital Lens Optimizer, helping to improve image quality and giving photographers the ability to work confidently in more complex environments.</p>
<p><strong>Built-in GPS***** provides geotag information including auto time syncing with Universal Time Code via satellites.</strong></p>
<p>Providing crucial location and time data, GPS has become an indispensible aspect of the professional workflow, especially for professionals who work on location and capture thousands of images each day. The EOS-1D X Mark IIcamera has GPS* built in, helping photographers and filmmakers not only tag their images with critical location data, but also adjust the time and timestamp on the camera automatically. Thanks to built-in GPS*, and Wi-Fi® connectivity throughthe optionalWireless File Transmitter WFT-E8A accessory, the EOS-1D X Mark II can use both GPS andWFT (Wireless File Transfer)together, making it easy to upload a great amount of images both quickly and from increasingly far-flung locales. Offering compatibility with American GPS satellites, Russian GLONASS satellites and Japanese quasi-zenith satellites Michibiki, the EOS-1D X Mark II’s GPS information is reliably accurate virtually anywhere you go.</p>
<p>* In certain countries and regions, the use of GPS may be restricted. Therefore be sure to use GPS in accordance with the laws and regulations of your country or region. Be particularly careful when traveling outside your home country. As a signal is received from GPS satellites, take sufficient measures when using in locations where the use of electronics is regulated.</p>
<p><strong>The new optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E8A </strong><strong>is compatible with IEEE 802.11ac/n/a/g/b, supporting both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi® bands.</strong></p>
<p>The Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E8A, the EOS-1D X Mark II camera’s new optional accessory, provides both a fastthroughput for image uploading andseveral new features that make dynamic wireless photography simple and fast. It has 5GHz 802.11ac support for high-speed image transfer, a revamped user interface that enables speedy set-up and configuration of wireless networks and even compatible smartphone connection.Accommodating both iOS* and Android** devices, the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E8A makes it simple to use a smartphone as a remote control for still and video capture. <p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/eos1dx2.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-24480"><img class="alignnone wp-image-24480" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/eos1dx2.jpg" alt="eos1dx2" width="728" height="924" srcset="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/eos1dx2-453x575.jpg 453w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/eos1dx2-768x974.jpg 768w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/eos1dx2.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></a></p>
<p>It’s good to see that <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-1d-x-mark-ii-known-specifications/">our reported launch price of $5999USD</a> turned out to be the case. The original EOS-1D X came to market at $6799.</p>

What Will The EOS 5D Mark IV Bring to the Table?

HTML:
With the specifications of the EOS-1D X Mark II being made public, the obvious next question is what can we expect to see in the EOS 5D Mark IV, which is coming in 2016.</p>
<p>The EOS 5D Mark III followed the EOS-1D X quite closely in on paper specifications. Below is a prediction based of what we think we could see inside the next 5D.</p>
<ul>
<li>28mp</li>
<li>9fps</li>
<li>DIGIC 6+ (They won’t launch DIGIC 7 so closely to a flagship camera)</li>
<li>61 point AF</li>
<li>CFast & SD</li>
<li>Touchscreen</li>
<li>Built-in GPS & Wifi</li>
<li>Lighter weight</li>
</ul>
<p>The biggest question will be in regards to 4K video capture. It appears that on the EOS-1D X Mark II, you will be able to record 4K video to the CFast 2.0 slot. Will Canon put a CFast 2.0 slot in the 5D Mark IV along with the SD card slot and do away with CF? I don’t see them taking the SD card slot out of the camera in favor of dual slots for CF and CFast. Everyone we’ve spoken to has said 4K recording will not be part of the EOS 5D Mark III direct replacement camera, but that can obviously change.</p>
<p>A video oriented version of the 5D such as a 5D C? It’s possible and has been long rumored, but nothing reported can be considered reliable at this point.</p>
