Zeiss Announces Otus 28mm f/1.4

HTML:
<p>The ZEISS Otus family continues to grow</p>
<p><em>ZEISS Otus 1.4/28: the new focal length in the wide-angle range augments ZEISS’s most powerful family of SLR lenses</em></p>
<p>OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 14 October 2015</p>
<p>With the new ZEISS Otus 1.4/28, users of shorter focal lengths can now also take advantage of the uncompromising quality of the ZEISS Otus family, whether for landscapes, architectural photography or any other images they take with a wide-angle lens. Where details count, the ZEISS Otus 1.4/28 with ZE or ZF.2 mount for DSLR cameras from Canon1) and Nikon1) is the lens of choice. When used with modern, high-resolution DSLR cameras, it offers unrivalled image quality unseen until now in wide-angle photography, even with a wide-open aperture.</p>
<p>The ZEISS Otus 1.4/28, a moderate wide-angle lens, particularly shows off its strengths in landscape photography. Even with a maximum aperture, the corners of the image are completely usable, so there are no limits to composition. In poor light combined with fast-moving objects, the lens also excels due to its high speed of f/1.4. While other lenses reveal their shortcomings in correction in night photography, especially when lots of open light sources dominate an image, the ZEISS Otus 1.4/28 boasts a stellar performance. Finally, the latest member of the ZEISS Otus family is excellent for taking pictures of image elements in the foreground, as they take on a greater feeling of depth to the scene due to the wide background and the open aperture; here, the lens’s harmonious bokeh ensures a 3D effect.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>For professional photographers

</strong>Developed to meet the high demands of professional photographers, the ZEISS Otus 1.4/28 has – like the two other focal lengths in the ZEISS Otus family – inner focusing, a dial window and the well-known yellow labeling of the dials for easy legibility, all of which are already known from professional cine lenses (for example ARRI/ZEISS Master Prime).</p>
<p>The ZEISS Otus 1.4/28 also stands out for its mechanical quality: the soft focus operation with the large rotation angle allows for the finest variations when focusing – something that is only possible with a metal construction. In every focusing situation, the user is given freedom to compose – one of the most important creative factors in photography. An artistic tool is literally put in the photographer’s hands. The robust all-metal barrel with its easy-to-grip focus ring is well suited for a photographer’s demanding everyday work; this ensures a long product life. The optical performance of the ZEISS Otus 1.4/28 is outstanding thanks to its high image contrast all the way into the edges of the image – already at an open aperture. Its consistent performance at all distances (minimum working distance of 0.15 m or 5.19”), the highly detailed images it creates without any bothersome artifacts, and the neutral bokeh in the background round out the excellent image quality of the ZEISS Otus 1.4/28. “With these features the ZEISS Otus lenses set themselves apart from the other ZEISS SLR lenses, such as the ZEISS Milvus family, which we recently presented,” said Christophe Casenave, Product Manager with ZEISS Camera Lenses.</p>
<p>Thanks to these characteristics, the ZEISS Otus 1.4/28 offers users who use a modern high-resolution 35-mm DSLR camera a quality that corresponds to the level of the medium format – without having to invest in large and expensive medium-format equipment.</p>
<p><strong>Intricate construction for uncompromising imaging performance

</strong>The lens consists of 16 elements in 13 groups. One of the lens elements has an aspheric optical surface and one element is aspheric on both sides. Eight other lens elements are made of special glass. The basis of the optical design is a Distagon. The special glass has anomalous partial dispersion, as is typical for an apochromatic lens. This corrects the longitudinal chromatic aberrations superbly, which therefore lie considerably below the tightly defined boundaries.  Bright-dark transitions in the image, in particular highlights, are depicted almost completely free of color artifacts. The floating elements design (the change of distances between certain lens elements when focusing) allows for unrivalled imaging performance along the entire focusing range, from 0.3 m (11.81”) to infinity.</p>
<p><strong>The ZEISS Otus lens family

</strong>When ZEISS introduced the ZEISS Otus 1.4/55 in 2013, creating a new family of high-end SLR lenses, the trade press and users alike were enthusiastic. The ZEISS Otus 1.4/55 has exceeded its promises up to this day. The second member of the family, the ZEISS Otus 1.4/85, which was presented at photokina 2014, continued this success story in the short telephoto range. It enables photographers to express their creativity in a unique way – and that with the unsurpassed high imaging performance for which the lenses in the ZEISS Otus family are known. “The ZEISS Otus 1.4/28 continues the tradition of its lens family. It is the best wide-angle that has ever existed. Now we can offer three outstanding lenses for the widest variety of applications,” added Casenave.</p>
<p><strong>Price and availability

</strong>The ZEISS Otus 1.4/28 ZF.2 and ZEISS Otus 1.4/28 ZE will be available worldwide starting in the second quarter of 2016. The lens shade is included with delivery. The retail sales price is unknown to date.</p>

Pointillism and Octopus

Hello everyone,

Fresh off the premier at the world renowned underwater film expo in San Diego, I have just loaded up my latest effort. This is an artistic piece...literally. Check out this amazing footage of a Delaware artist Nick Carro as he draws an octopus using a technique called pointillism. Make sure to watch the whole thing to see how it turns out compared to the original.

Underwater scenes shot with a 5d Mark II.

Enjoy!

Q: print quality PIXMA iP8750

Dear all,

I am looking into buying an A3+ printer. Has anyone any comments to make about a sub-Pixma-PRO printers?
The printer PIXMA iP8750 is a good deal cheaper than the PIXMA PRO 100S and it comes with 6-ink system, i.e. besides the text black has the usual CMYK plus a gray ink, so it is better than the standard office-inkjets, but it lacks the light-magenta and light cyan inks the pixma pro 100 ueses. (Obviously, a pigment-based printer would be better still)

Do you consider the print quality of this iP8750 sufficient or inacceptable?
Does the pixma pro 100s offer a better print quality that justifies its higher price?

B&H Photo -- workers conditions

I was troubled to read the following story:

http://america.aljazeera.com/multimedia/2015/10/bh-workers-claim-discrimination-unsafe-standards1.html

...which was quickly picked up by The Phoblographer:

http://www.thephoblographer.com/2015/10/13/warehouse-workers-at-bh-photo-video-protest-unsafe-working-conditions/#.Vh0XPaJKg40

Some of the stories shared by the workers run the gamut from very believable difficult warehouse conditions (I worked in a few myself before college) to the downright deplorable are-you-f-ing-kidding-me sort of events. I encourage everyone to give it a read.

I buy photo gear in lots of places, but I'd say I'm a solid 80/20 at B&H/Amazon for big ticket items like camera bodies, lenses, flashes, etc. -- principally because of their return policies, responsive service, etc.

I will think long and hard about giving B&H my future business after reading this.

The problem with price matching... (long story... less of a complaint really...)

This isn't actually photo related... but it is photo relevant and many of us make purchases at one retailer with the understanding that a preferred more reliable, faster shipping retailer will grant a price match.

I was looking for a new audio receiver for my home. It needed a few key ingredients... decent audio quality (although I am not an audiophile), it needed a minimum of 3 hdmi imputs and a single hdmi output, and ideally I wanted hdcp 2.2 so if I upgrade to 4k in the not too distant future I wanted it to be compatible.

Finally after a few weeks/months of waiting patiently for the right receiver at the right price, Fry's has a deal on a Yamaha RX-V379BL for $218. It's normal price is around $280. Not the greatest deal ever... but it has the specs I need and it is a value as it is on sale.

The sale starts on October 6, 2015 both online and instore for Fry's. I have a past history with Fry's that I won't go into in detail... but it was in intent to never buy from them again. In brief, the last time I made a purchase at Fry's (two SLR bodies) they cancelled one order because they incorrectly assumed it was a duplicate... then they lost my credit card information and called me for a new card... then they found my credit card information and charged that... which lead to a whole other ordeal with the bank.

That may not sound like too great of a sin... but it took several hours for me to get EVERYTHING set straight... and if a retailer is going to waste my time (even accidentally)... they are no longer a retailer to me.

I like Adorama and B&H... and for whatever reason... a slight lean and predilection for Adorama... I decided I would make the purchase through them and request a price match. October 6 was a holiday, Sukkot, so I had to wait until October 7. So the morning of October 7, I opened up the Fry's page to confirm it was still priced accordingly and I then went to Adorama where I purchased the receiver @ 8:08a.m. I subsequently called their customer service department @ 8:12a.m. They were closed... so I elected to send an email as I would be at work when they opened at 9a.m. This was done @ a.m. The perteninent information in the email was included... my order number, the web address for Fry's and the receiver. I'm thinking that sending an email was my biggest mistake.

I did receive an automated response indicating that the office was closed and the customer service department would be in @ 9:30a.m. But, per the email, "Due to the expected volume of emails submitted to us, there might be a slight delay in answering your email, we will do our very best to reply as quickly as possible."

I should have called the morning of the seventh... but I didn't.

I know many of us really appreciate the quality of packaging provided by both Adorama and B&H and the promptness at which things are shipped. The receiver arrived from Adorama the following day, October 8... and I was pleased, albeit not surprised, and I didn't even have to pay for overnight shipping because I only live 3 hours away.

The afternoon of October 8, I sent an IM to Helen Oster, who we all have a great deal of affection for and inquired about the status of my price match request. After a litte back and forth, she indicated that the Fry's website for that specific page was down and possibly sold out. I should have called the morning of the seventh... but I didn't. I did still have the page up on my desktop. I took the attached screen shot, saved it as a .jpg and sent it to her via email.

She responded that she has to be able to provide a valid link (i.e., one that allows a purchase) to the Purchasing Department. I requested that she initiate a return, preferrably where I did not have to pay shipping. She is unable to do this and suggested I contact Adorama directly. And thus... I did.

Between that conversation and the morning of October 10, I hit the f5 button more that my manufacturer's warranty would prefer... but finally the morning of SATURDAY, October 10, 2015, the Fry's webmaster wakes from his drunken stupor and the page is back up. My first instinct... call Adora... and it is Saturday. Oh right, they are closed on Saturdays. October 10, 2015 is the last day of the sale. So I swallow my pride... and I try and forget that blood oath I made to myself to never shop at Fry's again... and I made the purchase of the receiver. It still hasn't shipped as of the writing of this post.

But then I think (@ midnight on October 11th)... the sale is over on the 10th... so even if the link is up, it probably won't reflect the sale price... so calling Adorama on Sunday with the link being up won't work... but I have a receipt... a proof of purchase... maybe... this will be sufficient evidence to provide. It is more than a link... it is a rudimentary contract for good and services. They can match the price, I can cancel the Fry's order... no blood (oath), no foul.

But no. I should have called the morning of the seventh... but I didn't.

I just re-read the email from Helen from the 11th... and she said, "But if you can send me a live link to the lower price on Frys - or a screen shot of the lower price - I can forward it to the Purchasing Department and request a price match."

Wait... didn't I already do that on the 8th?

So the good news is that the return is "hassle free" per the email from Adorama. The bad news is that I will be required to pay for the initial shipping to me and the subsequent shipping back to Adorama. (Per the email: Shipping charges are not refundable. Items that qualified for free shipping that are being returned for refund will have our standard shipping charges deducted from refund or credit.)

And so here I am... I preferred one retailer over another... and due to the serendipity of holidays, a sketchy unreliable website, Saturday closures, cancelled "duplicate" orders, and simply thinking that an email would suffice... I'll probably wind up paying $30 for free shipping. That's a real bite to the ass.

Addendum:

I wrote this to get my thoughts and facts down before I called Adorama customer service. I explained the above situation... and I am pleased to say they are authorizing a return and emailing me a shipping label. The presumption is that I won't have to pay anything for this little escapade... so that's a plus.

ZEISS Announces Loxia 21mm f/2.8 for Sony E-Mount

HTML:
<em>With the new ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 the company is expanding its family of compact lenses for compact Sony full-frame cameras with E-mount with a super wide angle.</em></p>
<p>OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 12/10/2015.

The latest member of the ZEISS Loxia family is called ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21. It is a super wide angle, developed for compact full-frame cameras with E-mount and with a new optical design based on the ZEISS Distagon. The ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 supplements the ZEISS Loxia 2/35 and ZEISS Loxia 2/50 lenses, which were presented last year at photokina. Especially practical for cinematographers, the ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 has the mechanical aperture setting and the de-activation of the aperture click stop, both found on all ZEISS Loxia lenses.</p>
<p>“Since the Sony α7 series came out, the market has been waiting for a powerful super wide-angle lens for compact full-frame cameras. For many photographers such a lens was the missing tool in their gear. ZEISS is now meeting that demand with the ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21,” said Christophe Casenave, Product Manager at ZEISS Camera Lenses.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>As the latest member in the compact, light-weight family of ZEISS Loxia lenses, the ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 offers trusted features that combine traditional photography and modern technology. The electronic interface transmits lens data (EXIF) as well as the focus movements and – if desired by the photographer – activates the magnifying function of the camera. For the sophisticated photographer who does not want to leave all the work to the camera, there are many opportunities to compose thanks to the lens’s precise manual focusing with end stop and the mechanical setting of the aperture (aperture priority mode for the working aperture). As a result, photographers can take advantage of all the possibilities offered by modern compact system cameras with an electronic viewfinder.</p>
<p><strong>Optimal for different types of use

</strong>With an angular field exceeding 91 degrees (diagonal) on a full-frame camera, the ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 is well suited for nature, landscape and architectural photography. In landscape photography in particular, an exact infinity setting is a critical factor. Here, the precise manual focusing of the ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 supports the user enormously. Furthermore, the lens enables creative, naturally proportioned images with a low minimum object distance of just 0.25 meters (9.84”). The ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 is extremely compact and light, making it the perfect choice for travel and street photography.</p>
<p><strong>ZEISS Loxia lenses for video

</strong>Ambitious videographers will also discover once again that the ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 is a tool that offers optimum creative potential. The mechanical deactivation of the aperture click stop for infinite aperture settings (de-click), which already came with the ZEISS Loxia 2/35 and ZEISS Loxia 2/50, is also found in the new ZEISS Loxia super wide angle. The smooth focus operation with a rotation angle of 90 degrees of the ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 allows for the finest variations when focusing video cameras with E-mount, such as the Sony PXW-FS7 or PXW-FS5. “In addition, the identical external diameter of the ZEISS Loxia lenses across all focal lengths simplifies the changing of lenses during shoots, so accessories like a follow focus don’t need to be readjusted,” added Casenave.</p>
<p><strong>Newest optical design with robust construction

</strong>The ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 has been specially developed for digital sensors. The newly calculated lenses consist of 11 lens elements in nine groups. The underlying optical design is a ZEISS Distagon. High resolution along the entire image field, low distortion and color fringing, and an appealing bokeh – especially at the maximum aperture of f/2.8 – round out the exceptional features of this lens. “It’s a small jewel offering outstanding optical performance,” said Casenave, summarizing the optical qualities of the ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21. Other qualities include its impressive mechanical quality and robust barrel. Made entirely of metal, the barrel protects the lens and can withstand the rugged everyday situations that professional photographers face, thereby ensuring a long product life. Like the other ZEISS Loxia lenses, the filter diameter is 52 mm. Finally, a special weather protection on the lens mount protects the lens from spray getting between the camera and lens.</p>
<p><strong>Price and availability

</strong>The ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 will be available worldwide starting December 2015. The lens shade is included with delivery. The recommended retail price is USD 1,499 (excl. VAT) or EUR 1,259.66 (excl. VAT).<span class="green">*</span></p>

Canon PowerShot G9 X at Canon USA

HTML:
Impressive image quality. Stunning videos. A camera that’s slim and comfortable. The PowerShot G9 X camera is all this and more, featuring a 20.2 Megapixel*, 1.0-inch High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor, Canon’s powerful DIGIC 6 Image Processor and a fast, f/2.0–4.9 lens that helps you capture inspiring images – even in low light – with detail and color to match. Whether you carry it in your hand, a bag or inside a pocket, the PowerShot G9 X can accompany you anywhere you go and is slim enough to quickly be in your grasp when opportunity knocks. Subjects in the distance become closer with a 3x Optical Zoom lens (28–84mm equivalent). Movement can be captured in stunning Full HD video, or frozen in beautiful increments with up to 6.0 fps continuous shooting. Should you find yourself gazing at the stars, switch into Star Mode and admire the view. With a convenient control ring for quick adjustments on the fly, built-in Wi-Fi®** and NFC*** for simple sharing and its appealing portability, the PowerShot G9 X is ready when you are, where you are.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>High Detail, Even in Low Light</strong>

1.0-inch, 20.2 Megapixel* High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor

At 1.0 inch, the image sensor on the PowerShot G9 X camera is larger than the ones on most other compact cameras. This allows it to capture a greater range of light, so bright areas of the image, like clouds on a sunny day, can be more detailed and less likely to be washed or blown out. With low-light scenes, like when you’re indoors or outside at night, an ISO range of 125–12800 lets you use fast shutter speeds to help keep photos sharp and virtually unaffected by camera shake. The 20.2 Megapixel* resolution is outstandingly high, giving you the option of printing out bigger photos or cropping in to highlight the best part.</li>
<li><strong>Clear Photos in Almost Every Light</strong>

3x, f/2.0–4.9 Optical Zoom Lens (28–84mm)

The PowerShot G9 X camera has an impressive zoom lens with a remarkable optical zoom range, helping you capture wide shots like a big party scene or a gorgeous canyon, or enabling you to zoom in and get a wonderful close-up. The fast aperture goes as low as f/2.0, meaning it’s possible to see the subject and take clear photos in low light, often without a flash. Combined with Intelligent IS image stabilization, it helps to ensure virtually shake-free images, even in dark rooms or outside at night.</li>
<li><strong>Slim and Stylish</strong>

At only 7.37 ounces (209g), the PowerShot G9 X is a compact camera that’s not much bigger than a deck of cards, and can easily fit into a pocket or purse. Despite its size, it packs a large, high-quality image sensor and fast f/2.0 lens. These work together with features such as the DIGIC 6 processor to help create high quality photos, even in low light. This means you can have a camera within easy reach that’s able to deliver detailed images that show the texture of clothing fabric, the colors of a sunset or the moment a player kicks a ball at the goal.</li>
<li><strong>Intuitive User Interface</strong>

The 3.0-inch touch panel is designed to take advantage of both hands while holding the camera so you can make adjustments while still being ready to snap a photo. The menus are customizable, meaning the settings you adjust frequently are easily accessible. You’re also able to swipe quickly through photos you’ve taken, and tap the screen to easily adjust picture options and change what the camera is focusing on. In addition, the control ring around the lens can be rotated with your fingers to make adjustments to various settings, simplifying the process even further.</li>
<li><strong>Intuitive Controls</strong>

Control Ring and Touch Panel

Quick, simple adjustments are ideal when you’re trying to capture the great moments in life. The PowerShot G9 X camera uses a combination of a responsive, 3.0-inch touchscreen and a smoothly rotating control ring around the lens. Your right thumb can pick the setting you’d like to change, and then your left fingers can rotate the control ring to adjust it, all without lowering the camera or taking your finger off the shutter. For example, if you’re trying to capture a dog playing in the sun, you can quickly adjust the shutter speed with a tap of the menu and a twist of the control ring to get the amount of detail you desire, while keeping a bit of blur to show action.</li>

HDMI + LCD Mirroring - Not available in the 5DS

Hey folks. I decided to buy a Zacuto EVF and it's fab for dealing with a missing tilt screen but I can't seem to find on the camera or in the user guide anything about mirroring the LCD over HDMI.

I know the 5D3 has this function and wondered if it's been removed from this one? Or is there a super secret way of accessing the menu.

I tried up, down, left, right, A, B , C and Start but nothing happened.

35mm 1.4L II

I recently received my new lens and I am stoked to take some real pictures with it. I had a few minutes to walk around and capture some random stuff. I figured you would enjoy seeing these and hopefully it will help some of you buy it or not. I am happy to try and answer questions or take pictures of something if you would like. Sorry they arent award winning.
This also showed me i have no idea what 35mm looks like. I am so used to 50mm it was freaky.
Edit-this is my first time posting pictures so if its wrong or looks weird I am sorry. also these apparently direct you to my site. Please do not judge, i am way overdue on a update and it seems like a overwhelming task right now.
